Herren the Desire demon.

So one of the best minor twists in the original Dragon Age Origins, is the reveal that Herren is a desire demon, a reveal you will only ever learn if you play through the alternate timeline campaign Darkspawn chronicles where the main PC Warden dies and the darkspawn wins.

I love how this one, simple revelation completely turns over everything that the first game tells you about demons and spirits on it's head, something which would be expanded on in later games, but also how it fits in perfectly with everything else shown in the game.

While abominations creates absolute hideous monsters when formed, Desire demon abominations march to a completely different drum, as we see with Connor, where the demon leaves him perfectly physically healthy.

Desire Demons also are the only ones in game who flat out does not need an outside body at all to function, as shown with Kitty not having possessed a cat, but instead taken the form of one.

They also have far more well thought out and logical plan making than any other demons, capable of making plans that could actually work in the long run.

Which brings us back to Harren, the lover and business partner of the genius blacksmith who forges your best blade in awakening, and dragon armor in origins.

Here we see a Demon that has integrated completely into human society, has found an actual relationship with a human that satisfies his needs, and as shown with the way he acts exasperated by his lovers eccentric nature, he has clearly grown beyond the basic nature of a desire demon, into a human who at the end of the day, still retained his demonic powers(as we see in the darkspawn chronicles.

In other words, he is a demon version of Cole, introduced long, long before Cole was a thing.

I love how you can go back to the start of Dragon Age, and realize that they really had figured out the rules of this universe from day one.

Dragon Age Inquisition AU where Wade and Herren temporarily join the Inquisition at Skyhold. That's it. That's the AU. You get to see and interact with Wade and Herren again; you get to hear how things are going at Vigil's Keep and Amaranthine; and you get to hear tidbits of your old Awakening companions plus a bit about your Warden before leaving with Morrigan/leaving to find a cure.

I was playing through The Darkspawn Chronicles tonight and now I can’t stop thinking about a certain interaction.

When you’re in the marketplace, you can try to attack Herren and Wade. BUT, Herren stops you by transforming into a desire demon and then muttering about how ‘you’ve ruined everything!’ Before teleporting away with Wade.

(Now I understand the wiki says that’s not *actually* canon… but fuck that 🤣)

My brain is taking this concept and rotating it around like it’s in the microwave. What does this mean for the world? Like demons are capable of just *being* out of the Fade living life? We already know spirits can hitch a ride in someone’s body without them being turned into an abomination, but now we have an actual demon, wearing someone’s face, just living as a merchant with their husband.

I have no idea where I’m going with this only that I find the entire concept fascinating.

I haven’t seen anyone say it so I’ll say it I really want Wade and Herren to be in Dragon Age The Veilguard 

Like yeh the special craftsman might and more than likely could be Sandal but what if it was Wade and they live in the light house with us and Herren fore goes his mortal form and is just a desire demon all the time.

I miss them.

I feel like Sandal is a bit of an obvious answer, so I actually have to go with Wade! His dynamic with Herren always makes me laugh in my playthrough of DAO and I love that they come back in Awakening. Honestly, as unlikely as it is, I'd love to see these two come back in Veilguard.

Another @black-emporium-exchange entry for me! This one is slice of life with Herren and Wade. I absolutely loved writing about their ordinary life. Just being comfortable with each other and the like.

Content Warning: wholesome, slice of life, old married couple

The long winters of Ferelden took their toll on his joints but Herren knew his pain didn’t compare to what Wade felt. He stretched his back as the last customer left for the day, relieved to go yet another day without a single odd request. Now that the Warden-Commander had gone off on a secret mission, he and Wade settled back into Denerim. There’d been nothing for them at Vigil’s Keep anymore except painful memories that kept Wade up at night. Herren did what he could to soothe the horrific images away but they remained with him presently.

“Wade, it’s time to put down the hammer and have some dinner,” Herren called from his spot near the counter. He was putting the day’s earnings into the safe and heard the bell chime over the door. “My apologies, but we are.” The words died on his tongue as he saw who walked in. Herren couldn’t stop the grimace as he recognized the woman standing there and he just knew this day had just become ten times longer.

“Warden-Commander, it’s been a while.” Though he did add under his breath, not long enough. Her lips turned up in a smile as she heard him but she didn’t react to his words.

I miss Wade and Herren, we never got to see the side eye Wade would've given Gorrim for the "wife's father is the best smith in Denerim"

what if there was some sort of psychological warfare going on between them that the warden didn't even noticed

I love my Unproblematic Gay couple, one of whom is a Literal Demon. They are Cute and Nuanced.

The best couple in dragon age is the dramatic gay blacksmith and his loving demon husband who is just trying to make sure they don't starve.

Dragon Age Veilguard AU where everything is the same except you meet Herren and Wade. If you're a Grey Warden, you can recruit them for Weisshaupt, and if you're any other faction you can get them connected Come the siege, you enter a room and find all the Darkspawn killed. Wade is hiding behind an anvil. Herren is covered in blood. Both are alive. They leave the room with Wade giving a key to his best Grey Warden equipment. There's a beat. If you're a mage, or you have a mage in your party, they make a comment about Herren taking on darkspawn without a weapon, and say he felt "oddly like magic, almost demonic".
