crazy how the us teaches vietnam like it was an understandable conflict. "they wanted to stop communism!!" like no that was straight up violent imperialism. they don't even tell you about the first indochina war. i think it's because, if you look at it, vietnam is kind of one of the coolest countries ever for a little bit. not only did they fight imperial japan during their occupation of vietnam during ww2, they also absolutely wafflestomped colonial nations (france, the united states, china) trying to keep/take control of the country post-ww2. they also stopped the cambodian genocide in 1979, which is probably another reason why vietnam isn't taught honestly (it's also why china invaded vietnam so technically vietnam was staging an offensive into cambodia at the same time as they were defending in their own territory all the way on the other side of the country, which makes them cooler). the united states voted at the UN to keep pol pot in power, even after evidence of a genocide was found.
