ABT Summer Season
Onegin - June 18, 2024
Woolf Works - June 28, 2024
Swan Lake - July 6, 2024
I go to so much NYCB (ugh what a boring brag, I'm sorry) that I sometimes forget ABT is our premier ballet company on this side of the Atlantic.
And then I see something as divine as this year's Onegin and it obliterates the other company from memory. This Onegin is what you think ballet is, what you think you're going to get every time you see Swan Lake. Classical but timeless, sumptuous, acrobatic and, most of all, so moving. So, so much credit to a ravishing Christine Shevchenko as Tatiana and her crackling, palpable chemistry with Cory Stearns (I've never enjoyed him so much). I ate my heart out, clearly.
Swan Lake was good. I did not pick a good seat this time. Well, I picked 3 good seats and 1 bad and gave the 3 good ones to my 3 guests, one of whom afterward said "I just don't think ballet is my thing." Wtf. Anyway, from the second row of box 12 you could not see Siegried making the ultimate sacrifice. For all I know Odette is still a swan and that mf went ahead and married von Rothbart. I guess what im saying is that this performance was not compelling enough to overcome bad seating. I did NOT go to the performance where Chloe Misseldine got promoted to principal on stage, which by all accounts was enrapturing and strong evidence that what the people want is performer-forward companies with reality TV levels of access....a debate for another forum.
Woolf Works closes my spring of Woolf (following The Hours opera at the same theatre). I don't know if the fertility hormones I was taking at the time were responsible (ugh) but I was not in a good mood when I came in and the mood was not lifted by this ballet. It was not boring, but it was...incoherent. And I don't think you can blame that on the stream of consciousness source material. The most successful ballet was We Not I, and it was almost destroyed by the ham-fisted Tron-inspired aural coulorings of Richter's score. Richter is like....so literal. I just don't find his music interesting. Unforch the rest of this ballet was equally literal when it even bothered to nod to source material I'm afraid it did not understand. What a disappointment. Visually, I admit, it was quite striking. It just doesn't work as ballet.
Nevertheless! It's exciting to see new ballet, and especially to see it get the rigor of a world class ballet company, and though I thought this ballet was *whispers* quite bad, I hope we get some more.

The Dante Project, the award-winning ballet by choreographer Wayne McGregor, composer Thomas Adès, and visual artist Tacita Dean, returns to London's Royal Opera House, where it was first performed in 2021, for eight performances by the Royal Ballet, from this Saturday through December 2. You can get tickets here.
Adès's music, Dante, was performed by Los Angeles Philharmonic and Gustavo Dudamel at Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2022, the Nonesuch recording of which was just nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best Contemporary Classical Composition, Best Orchestral Performance, and, for the album's producer, Dmitriy Lipay, Producer of the Year, Classical. You can get it and hear it here.
“In any new shortlist of great ballet scores by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky, Bartók, Ravel, Prokofiev, Britten, and Bernstein, Dante must newly be included for its musical invention alone,” exclaims the Los Angeles Times. “There is not a second in its 88 minutes that doesn’t delight. All of it is unexpected and wanted.” The collectable limited vinyl two-LP edition of Dante includes artwork by Dean and photography from the Royal Ballet’s performance.
