As you so kindly, enthusiastically, and thoroughly answered my previous ask on film recommendations, expressing your thoughts and feelings on each one, I thought I'd send you some more suggestions for you to look through at your leisure...

The Apartment (1960)

Yes! I am weak for any film with Jack Lemmon in it. I also really love him in "Some like it Hot," "Grumpy Old Men," "The Front Page," "The Odd Couple," etc. He was a gift to the earth. If you asked me for my top ten male film actors of all time, he definitely must be on that list.

Beauty and The Beast (1978)

Ok, I need to see it. I didn’t know this version even existed! I’ve seen so many like the 1946 release and the more recent French 2014 release of Belle et la Bete (I have watched both the English and French Dubs), but I have not seen this one! I need to remedy this and just looking at screencaps is blowing my mind. He’s a bird? Interesting, I wonder why they went with that choice. 

Branded To Kill (1967)

I have never seen this film. I have no opinion swaying in favor or against it. I might give it a shot one day out of curiosity. I really love how they shot the monochrome style of it. I am in love with that, actually.

The Cremator (1969)

I have not seen this, but looking between screencaps and the synopsis my thoughts are surfing around the film Harold and Maude (1971) if it was told in the style of Alfred Hitchcock. Am I thinking wrong here? 

Dead Of Night (1945)

Oh, God. Another film I remember watching with my father--that ventriloquist dummy. I still do not understand the obsession with those, but to each their own really. Definitely do not recommend it if they freak you out, because it’ll definitely freak someone out. 

Delicatessen (1991)

I am not familiar with this film, but screencaps tells me I want to keep it that way. I do not care for the imagery of the food. Or the suggestion of things I shall not begin to give name to. It seems a little too macabre for my liking...which is really saying something when I enjoy the Hannibal franchise. Or does it just mean I am contradicting myself? Fine. I am contradicting myself.

The Haunting (1963)

I haven’t seen the original yet. I have only seen the 1999 remake with Owen Wilson, Catherine Zeta Jones, etc. It doesn’t really hold up well with the special effects, but it is still quite entertaining with beautiful sets. I swear I still have dreams about the carousel room. I have some really fond memories of watching this adaptation with my mom. No matter how many times we’ve watched the piano scene, we gasp. Seeing people lose their heads? Fine. Seeing a person lose their eye? No.

L'Immortelle (1963)

This movie feels like a bit of a fever dream for me. I’ve watched it once, but I can’t even remember under what circumstances or with who that would have been. I mean, they are trying to resolve the kidnapping of prostitutes. But damn, the lingerie was beautiful in this movie. I want it.

The Iron Rose (1973)

I can’t say I’ve seen this, but it looks interesting. I feel like I should have more familiarity with it since the title resonates. I have probably seen or shared a post about it before without fully knowing it was a film, I mean....it involves a beautiful cemetery and I’m kind of a weakling for cemeteries. It might sound a little odd, but I find them to be magical places. Not in the same way a castle or fairy woodland would be, but in a solemn and haunted way. It’s a place humans have chosen to preserve memories and protect them.

Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949)

I feel like I’m missing out on an important film. I really love the promotional posters and stills. This looks so gorgeous to me. I mean, this one for example. Reminds me of vintage victorian postcards a little:

Naked (1993)

It has David Thewlis?! I need to watch it just for him. Really. No other reason needed. That’s plenty reason. He can never be present enough in films if you want my two cents. He’s a gem. Kingdom of Heaven? Dragon heart? He will be forever one of my favorite fantasy film villains. He goes from perfect gentleman to the biggest bastard and I just love him. Talented man. He’s like one of those actor crushes that you get not for his looks, but for his mind and energy.

Also, who hasn’t gone feral watching him in a sword fight? He could kill me and I would thank.

Repo Man (1984)

Closest thing to seeing this film is the farthest with Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008). I have no idea about this, but know they are nothing alike.

God, now I’m wanting to watch the Genetic Opera again. I love everything..especially, the music. I have so many emotions about that movie. It has Sarah Brightman (goddess) and strangely somehow, Paris Hilton is there and she didn’t ruin the experience? She makes sense to the plot? Talk about a fever dream.

And then, we have Terrance Zdunich as Grave-Robber. In an alternate universe where I am single, he can honestly rail me in the cemetery so hard that I ricochet between the coffins till I’m singing about how he’s going to sedate my enemies before their surgery but I did not say that and you can’t prove it.

Seconds (1966)

I feel like I’ve seen this or part of this? I do not remember how it ends, but remember part of the plot. I remember the man returning from his faked death with a new identity or something like that.

Solyaris (1972)

I am familiar with Tarkovsky’s other works like Nostalgia and Andrei Rublev, but not this one. Not yet.

The Trial (1962)

Yes! Know this one. This is a mystery flick for deep thinkers for sure. Plot aside, those scenes and sets really do something to you. Everything is so intense in that “life is occurring in surreal and disturbing cycles” kind of way. It does great service to the writing of Franz Kafka without any doubt. It looks how I imagine the interior of his mind would have been like.

Vampyr (1932)

Love it. Well, I love any good cinema involving the mythos of vampires in general and all the more if they appear in black and white. Nosferatu (1922)? Dracula (1931)? *chefs kiss* Masterpieces.

The Vanishing (1988)

I haven’t seen this and I can’t say it speaks to me on any level. It just isn’t sparking my curiosity or anything.

The Wicker Man (1973)

Ah. The classic film Midsommar wish it was.

A Zed And Two Noughts (1973)

I have never heard of this movie, let alone seen it. But, can we just take a moment to appreciate the wild ride that is the start of the synopsis?

“Identical twins lose their wives in a car crash caused by a white swan. Both brothers are zoologists and become obsessed with the death and decay of animals.”

What in the absolute hell is this movie and how much will I regret investigating the plot?

All in all, I have to give you props for stumping me on some of these titles. There’s a good mix of classics in here that I know, but I feel like I just dissociated from a by-gone era (or two) hearing about the others.

Something out of the ordinary is happening in this country. So much so that the media, the politicians and the unions have decided to maintain a total silence about it. Two months ago Jospin bluntly rejected the demands of the unemployed. Since that time the unions and the official unemployed associations have continued to urge jobless people to go home and leave things to them, the press has completely ignored them, and the police have hassled them, often for nothing more than handing out leaflets.

Yet almost everywhere in the country individuals have been coming together into bands, collectives and assemblies and have begun to talk to each other directly and freely.

We are among those who have been taking part in the assembly at Jussieu University. For the last month and a half a sort of ongoing, self-organized forum has been carried on every evening. We talk to each other and we listen to each other — “unemployed,” “precariously employed,” “workers,” “students,” “riffraff,” “militants,” “unionists,” “members” of this or that group, or “none of the above.” We put quotes around all these labels because, upon talking with each other, we came to realize that they only serve to close us off, to isolate us from each other and even to manipulate us into fighting each other; that despite our particular social roles we are all subject to the same history, to the same oppression, and animated by much the same needs, desires and questionings.

We set out to discuss EVERYTHING. Beginning with what ruins our lives: work and its pointlessness (upon taking stock we concluded that 90% of this society’s productions are useless bullshit), its miserable wages, its hierarchies, its daily horror; and the wretchedness and boredom of unemployment, which we came to realize is merely the flip side of work, a threat held over the heads of workers, forcing them to submit to the economic blackmail.

We also talked about money and commerce; and about health, and the food we eat and the air we have to breathe. And it soon became clear that from whatever angle you look at this society, you can’t change any detail without having to transform the whole thing; that everything is linked to money and profit, and that human beings are treated like any other commodities: paid more or less miserably, exploited, and then thrown away when there’s no more profit to be squeezed out of them. Having arrived at these conclusions, we decided to communicate them to others.

So we wrote leaflets. But feeling that direct contact was especially important, we also invited ourselves into the cafeterias of various businesses in order to talk with the workers, and invaded all sorts of other places (unemployment offices, welfare offices, newspaper offices, utility companies, restaurants, etc.) in order to tell everyone what we had been saying to each other in the assemblies. We met and expressed our complicity with illegal immigrants, with the wildcat-striking subway cleaners, and with the Farmers Confederation members opposing the use of bioengineered corn, because we realized that our particular grievances all stem from the same cause: money, cash, the bottom line!

We tried to get a better idea of the kind of society we wanted by some direct experiments: an ongoing open assembly; starting a collective garden where we could grow real food; giving lessons in generosity to storekeepers (those prime examples of social selfishness); trying out different types of interpersonal relations in games, roves, dinner parties. As one of us put it at an assembly: “For two months now I’ve had lots of friends, I haven’t been bored for a moment, and I no longer wait for my monthly check with the same anxiety.”

We also let some of those we consider enemies of humanity (repo men, bankers, merchants, administrators, journalists) know that once we overcome our isolation they can no longer carry on their despicable practices with impunity.

We’ve been repressed (the sole government response to our movement). We’ve struggled to free four imprisoned comrades. And we’ve continued to reflect and to criticize (including each other).

And we have concluded not only that there will never again be enough work for everyone (both because of machines and because of the neoslavery in the Third World), but that even if there were, we have no desire to work a single hour producing stupid, useless junk, and that all production needs to be reexamined from the standpoint of our real needs and desires. All the money in the world, even if it were divided equally among everyone, would bring about practically no real change in our lives. (We will naturally accept whatever money we can pressure them into giving us, but money is not what we are really lacking.)

AS LONG AS MONEY EXISTS, THERE WILL NEVER BE ENOUGH FOR EVERYONE.

These reflections have naturally made us realize that we need to create another form of society, one in which people will decide on their own activity and production rather than being slaves to the present production system. This is obviously a huge project. But since many of us are “unemployed,” we do have one invaluable treasure: TIME! And from now on we intend to use it, because the project of a really lived time is far more exciting than the empty time passed working or watching TV or waiting in line at the welfare office.

We know that millions of people share the same feelings and ideas, even if in many cases they’re buried somewhere inside them. It’s up to us to meet each other if we want to overcome our isolation and submission. We’re beginning to write and visit each other. Discussions are taking shape in Paris and around the country. Coordinations and joint actions are being organized.

For us, real wealth has nothing to do with money or commodities. We are discovering this richness in our encounters, in our collective schemes, and in our dreams and glimpses of another, truly human society — a society we invite you to join us in envisaging and creating.

I’ve always wanted to write this as a fanfic but I’m a dumbass college student who gets too freaking busy LMAO but I have a headcanon that Nathan earnestly tried for a period of time to like... be a father figure to Pavi. This was after Marni died, Shilo was still little and Nathan was so lost in life & scared about the future and terrified of his ability to keep Shilo safe after “murdering his wife.”

Pavi was like... an easy target because the age difference is just enough between him and Nathan that it felt like he had some power over him as an elder. That doesn’t mean Nathan didn’t also have various interactions with the other Largo kids, it was just Pavi he could weirdly project a “child” role into. Luigi is actually pretty close to Nathan’s age which makes it harder for him to assume a fatherly role over him (and Luigi is a lot more overtly dangerous and Nathan doesn’t want to be stabbed), and I think Nathan avoided Amber because she reminds him too much of Shilo, or what Shilo could become — motherless daughter of a horrible man who’s life is falling apart and spiraling out of control. He wouldn’t want to confront Amber because that’s too close for comfort. So he takes on Pavi, who at the time I think also seems almost “normal.” He’s not killing people in broad daylight like Luigi, right? We know the masks are a kind of recent development; back then if anything Pavi just seemed kind of embarrassing and sad... this stupid grown man who still acts like a child and tries to cover his speech impediment with this silly accent and clearly thrives on attention and impressing others and just wants to be loved and cared for (that being said, I’m sure Pavi was up to a lot of darker things behind the scenes, but Nathan wouldn’t know).

So I think Nathan really earnestly tried to like, “be there” for Pavi in this weird faux fatherly way and “fix him,” if anything just to make himself feel better and make himself feel like he had a chance of being a good enough father to raise Shilo? And it was honestly kinda nice because as much of a dumbass as Pavi is, since he’s Rotti’s son he knows ALL of Nathan’s darkest secrets pertaining to Shilo existing and Marni’s death and Repo Man etc. I think in order to hide everything Nathan really cut off every single relationship he’d had prior to Marni’s death so they wouldn’t find out what had happened (and “he tragically became a shut-in after his wife and daughter died” was a very reasonable excuse), so it was a strange breath of fresh air that with Pavi he could skip the formalities. And Pavi... actually reciprocates a bit on some level. Like he still behaves like Pavi, but he’ll accept most of Nathan’s invitations to do things and even humor him with a conversation (something I think Pavi would genuinely actually enjoy having, even if he almost always turns the topic back to himself). Pavi can be kinda witty when he wants to be and I think Nathan would kind of enjoy the company, and even when Pavi acts especially insufferable it bolsters Nathan’s ego and resilience to think that this is “helping him.”

Anyway, as you can imagine in the end this all really collapsed for them both and ends horribly. Mainly, I think Nathan giving Pavi attention did kind of mean something to Pavi, but I also think Pavi is significantly more fucked up than you’d guess on the surface (well, until he starts wearing women’s faces, then you can tell on the surface too) and I think he really does desperately need a strong father figure or masculine role model in his life because right now the two “older men” he’s around are his father who very blatantly despises him and his older brother whose problem solving skills involve temper tantrums and murder (not that that excuses Pavi’s behavior, it’s just an observation of his home life). But Pavi doesn’t know how to access that kind of relationship and Nathan wasn’t able to set boundaries well (partly because he didn’t realize the extent of Pavi’s fucked-upness either), and Pavi has really channeled his need for attention into something purely sexual so in the end I think he tried to... seduce Nathan. And it... really really really freaked Nathan out, like not in a EW GAY!1!!!1!1 way lol I mean in a “oh my god I was trying to be a dad to you how did you read this so wrong I don’t want to have sex with you I want to be your father how did I fuck this up so badly” way.

Soooo Nathan gave up largely out of fear and not too long after that Pavi’s face stealing became something he was known for, and I think GeneCo probably hides what Pavi’s actually doing under a pretense that the skin he wears is synthetic flesh when of course the reality is he’s personally skinning it off women of his choosing, but I think Nathan would realize that that’s bullshit and know the truth (we know he does by Night Surgeon/Who Ordered Pizza since Pavi alludes to wanting Mag’s face to him). He would know Pavi was up to something a lot darker. And in the end all Nathan’s efforts with Pavi did was leave him haunted by the fact that despite his best efforts he really couldn’t help him at all and Pavi ended up just as depraved and awful as the rest of his family (if not, honestly, worse). It made him extra aware of how difficult raising a child is, especially in this world, especially as... himself. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

An Unearthly Comparison

Before we begin, I would like to start by saying- I know that "An Unearthly Child," is considered part of the Cave of Skulls serial. I've chosen to treat it as it's own separate story, due to the fact that it has very little to do with the other three episodes. As far as I am concerned, you could have put any story at the end of An Unearthly Child, and the results would have been the same.

In the last two days since "The Woman Who Fell to Earth," aired, I've had discussions as to why the Doctor lost her TARDIS, and what that might mean. A worry I had was that the TARDIS had rejected Jodie, and was making her prove she was still the Doctor, which would suck for obvious reasons. But my friend suggested something else- it's just a plot device. And it makes sense. Why would Yasmine leave behind her job to travel with the Doctor? What better way is there to keep Graham and Ryan together as a family? The Doctor can't just kidnap people can she?

Watching "An Unearthly Child" can be really jolting for a lot of modern Doctor Who fans. The Doctor is cantankerous, aloof, unhelpful, and contumacious. Sure, we've seen these traits in all of our modern Doctors, but with William Hartnell, it's so prevalent. Which is why it's hard to believe there was a version of him that was even more unpleasant! So naturally, I had to find out for myself.

For those of you not in the know, when "An Unearthly Child" (or AUC) was originally filmed, BBC's Head of Drama, Sydney Newman, was unhappy with the results. He told producer Verity Lambert to reshoot the episode in its entirety with a few changes to the characters and script. Ironically, with all of the official episodes of Doctor Who that were destroyed, this unaired pilot still exists! The episode lived another sort of double life, as it was aired two weeks in a row, due to the Kennedy Assassination the day before the premiere. Or as Terry Pratchett put it- "because of public demand and that pesky business with the grassy knoll."

The beginnings of the two different versions of aren't all that different. There is an audible "bang," sound in the opening music that I had never noticed before. And oddly enough, the picture quality in the unaired version is a bit crisper. You can actually read the I.M. Forman written on the gate of the scrapyard on Totter's Lane. Though I will say the camera work in the aired version is much snappier. I'm not sure if it's just the version I have, or if it has anything to do with the 16 mm telerecording. Who knows?

Try to imagine, if you will, what it was like to watch Doctor Who back then. Science fiction was still a thing of ire. Spaceships were stupid looking, and the stories were hacky. But this was something different. Something like C.S. Lewis (who also died the day before the episode aired). No matter what programs Doctor Who has inspired since, there's still nothing quite like it. Nothing that gets so borderline surreal. Nothing that has so much staying power.

We're introduced to Ian and Barbara. Two teachers at Coal Hill School in London. Barbara is concerned about a mutual student who perplexes her. In rewatching these episodes, I was reminded of the scene in Donnie Darko when Drew Barrymore and Noah Wyle discuss the titular character, a student of theirs that seems to stand out from the rest. In comparing the two versions of AUC, the biggest difference is that Ian and Barbara are sitting down in the aired version, which seems like a good choice. There's a more intimate, less rushed feeling. They feel more familiar with one another. Evidently, the original script had indicated a romance between them but was later toned down. I don't know why. I ship it.

It's through this interaction that we meet Susan. I've always had some rather conflicted feelings about Susan. On one hand, she's kind of endearing, and in other ways, she's downright annoying. When we meet her through the lens of Ian and Barbara's perspective, she's brilliant, enigmatic, and strange. Possessing knowledge no person her age should actually know.

The Susan we meet moments later is a bit more of a kid you'd expect in the 1960's. She listens to surfer music by the fictional "John Smith and the Common Men," while sort of strumming along with the music. This marks the first appearance of the name John Smith in Doctor Who, by the way. The impression I get is that Susan was supposed to be kind of "hip." Even her hairstyle was designed by Vidal Sassoon, which is actually still pretty cool.

After surreptitiously trying to learn more about Susan's home situation by offering her a ride home, we're left alone with the young girl. One of the things I'm kind of sad they scrapped in the aired version, is Susan's little inkblot Rorschach test she reads like tea leaves. It was a very "I Ching," moment, that I thought made her seem almost mystical. Instead, the scene ends with Susan looking through a book on the French Revolution (all white with big black letters like it was produced in the Repo Man universe), and exclaiming- "That's not right!"

Ian and Barbara follow Susan to the address in her school file, 76 Trotter's Lane, the same scrapyard from the beginning of the episode. They follow her in to find nothing but a bunch of junk and a large blue police box. Upon touching it, Ian describes the box as "alive." It is at this point, that the two versions of the episode begin to diverge the most.

William Hartnell's initial portrayal of the Doctor is almost villainous. Where he's supposed to come off as mysterious, he comes off as scheming and methodical. Instead of thinking he has some great secret he's worried about getting out, he appears more to have some horrible secret he's hiding. You almost side with Ian and Barbara, that Susan is in danger. It's easy to see how this is wrong for the character. You want the Doctor to be independent, and at times, contrarian, but never to the point that he seems like the antagonist. Dr Smith in Lost in Space comes to mind. His initial portrayal was one of a villain, but over time, his strength was found in being a sort of anti-hero, and friend to Will Robinson.

The way they solved this? Well, he appears more curious. More aloof. Less direct and confrontational. There's a bit more twinkle in his eye the second time around. Vague threats turn into goading and daring. As Ian interrogates the Doctor, the Doctor takes interest in some of the random junk around him. His curiosity, mixed with his blasé attitude toward their concern gives him the right mix of intrigue and mischief. You can tell he's hiding something, but it feels less to evade justice, but rather to protect himself, Susan, and even the two interlopers.

A lot of the beauty in capturing this balance is in the name of the show. Who is this Doctor? Why is he in a scrapyard? What is the deal with that police box? These are the right questions that the audience should be asking. You should wonder about his intentions, but not be able to say outrightly- this man is a criminal. But Ian and Barbara are still unconvinced, as they push forward into the big box, and like a C.S. Lewis novel, into a whole new world.

Some of the best moments in Doctor Who are the big reveal of the TARDIS. It will never not be cool. But the unique element to this reveal is it's the first one that was a big reveal to the audience as well. That's actually rather unique when you give it some thought. Usually, we're all in on the joke, waiting for it. We know about the wide-eyed expressions, mouths agape. "It's bigger on the inside!" they'll say. You know something is weird about the police box. They've framed it in the middle of the shot. The episode begins around it. We've been beckoned toward it since the beginning of the story. Even with the red herring of seeing a policeman walking past it at the beginning, the low hum it emits betrays any sense that it is merely common.

Ian and Barbara, have at this point, seen too much. It's still early, days and our Doctor doesn't like showing off his special ship. We learn it's name, given by Susan as an acronym for "Time and Relative Dimension in Space," (later to be changed to "Dimensions," for no apparent reason). One of my favourite aspects of this scene is the Doctor explaining the TARDIS's dimensional capabilities by comparing it to television's ability to shrink a large object down onto a screen. It's sci-fi mumbo-jumbo, but I love it.

Another big difference we see here is that in the first version, Susan explains that she was born in the 49th century. It's a little too on the nose. Explains a little bit of the "Who" in the title too much. Another thing is the hum of the TARDIS is much more abrasive in the original version. In reviewing it just a moment ago, my cat gave me a rather cross look from the shrill noise. Like Ian said, “I have... a very sensitive ear.” Though this is not the last time the Radiophonic Workshop will pierce your eardrums.

It's in this scene that we see the greatest disparity in William Hartnell's performance. He's angry, confrontational, and even calls Susan a stupid child at one point. His temper is evident and not at all endearing. It makes his decision to kidnap Ian and Barbara less one of survival, and more of one of control. While it has never made a whole lot of sense what danger two school teachers knowing his secrets could present, the Doctor chooses to kidnap his new guests. We never know why he was in the scrapyard (though we do find out in later episodes) or why Susan wanted to attend school. Susan's "why," may be self-evident, in that she's a child who wants to be around other children, but the Doctor's reasons are less evident. Either way, the scene fares far better in the aired version.

What comes next is one of my favourite shots in the history of the show. There's something exhilarating about the TARDIS among a rocky terrain, and the approaching shadow that cuts a long menacing shape against the horizon. It's pure science fiction and yet another big reveal. The Doctor wasn't lying. This ship of his really can move through space in an instant. It's a beautiful beginning to one of television's greatest sagas.

What’s your hair like at this present moment? >> Freshly shorn and washed (well, yesterday, but that’s still pretty fresh to me).

Are you more comfortable sitting or lying down? >> It depends on what I’ve been doing more of at the time. I like to sit up but sometimes reclining is a relief if I’ve been sitting too much.

What’s the worst film you’ve ever seen? >> I don’t know, but one movie I absolutely didn’t enjoy was Napoleon Dynamite.

Stuck Inside Media Diary Week 7

I realized that I didn’t include my watching of the Parks And Rec special thing that was on. By no means was it perfect, though I imagine that it was the best case scenario for something like that (in terms of being an original story, as opposed to a table/script read that the Community cast put together that’s coming out...ur, at some point). Is it necessary as a piece of media? It raised a lot of money for Feeding America and did its best in trying to shine some optimism in really unsettling times. Kinda nice.

Filmworker, Zierra 2017 [as of now this is available on Netflix]

Interesting take on a documentary about, but not about Stanley Kubrick. It would be unusual for any Kubrick dude to not know or have some kind of inkling that he was a complicated figure (an asshole), especially when it came to making movies, so the point of the movie isn’t really to inform that aspect of of it (though it probably confirmed suspicions, should you have any). It’s more a case example of how toxic relationships like these work and how dangerous it is to deify people, especially your own heroes. Of course, should any of us be given the opportunity to work or be near someone we look up to, how’re do we know what our breaking point is for them before we reach it (unfortunately for Leon Vitali, it wasn’t until Kubrick passed away that he could see just how far deep he was). This is also a pretty good example of how companies and corporations will treat you like garbage just to advance their credibility and how sometimes it feels like a documentary’ll show you that but not really do anything change that (as far as I know).

Mad Men, [season 4 premier] “Public Relations”, “Christmas Comes But Once A Year”, “The Good News”, “The Rejected”

So I definitely haven’t watched Season 4 as a more grown person than I was back in high school when this first aired. So I’ve known Don’s life is a nightmare, but never really processed why or thought about why; I was not the most keen observer (probably because I was thinking about not turning in homework). Now with all that said, jeeeeeeez Don’s life is a super depressing nightmare oooof. Now Season 4 feels like it needs some more runway to catch up with itself and its momentum it revved up to at the end of season 3, so the first couple of weeks feel a little wobbly (though wobbly Mad Men is leagues better than some other dramas at their best). However, the Don and Lane friendship does gets established in this slew of episodes, two men who couldn’t be more different, but can’t help but be bonded by a miserable moment in time.

The Last Dance, Parts 5 & 6

These were probably my favorite parts of the doc so far, probably because its the most enjoyable stuff you can watch (hold for destroying any chance Charles Barkley had at winning a championship). Jordan as a brand, both figuratively and literally-the concept of celebrity through a Michael Jordan lens; I could lap that up for hours. It makes me mad that there’s only two hours left (now), because there’s clearly so much more that could be covered, but will leave unturned (more on this next week).

Monty Python: Almost The Truth (Lawyers Cut), “The Not-So-Interesting Beginnings”

Good example of the subjects not getting in the way of the subject matter. Probably the thing that leaves to be desired is seeing the remaining members (this was made in 2009, so Chapman was the only deceased member at the time) together and interacting with one another. You get a little bit of Michael Palin and Terry Jones together, but not in an interviewed capacity, which faintly scratches that itch. If I had to guess, I’d say that they all don’t love being together without Palin there as a buffer, just based on what I know about Monty Python. Lotta strong and brilliantly smart personalities with no real acknowledgement on who’s the best, because they all think they’re the best (maybe not Palin or Jones). Also, this is a surprisingly self-aware interview with Idle, which really shattered any preconceived notions I have for him-might have to do some self-evaluation.

Escape From New York, Carpenter 1981 [as of now this is available on Prime]

I’ve definitely lied to people about having seen all of Escape From New York before. Why? Because it made me appear better than I actually was. It and Die Hard With A Vengeance (another great New York movie, though for the record, I’ve still never seen all of it) seemed to be two movies that I kept catching just enough glimpses of throughout the years without having actually seeing all of it. For instance, I had no idea that Harry Dean Stanton was in Escape From New York, which instantly elevates movies for guys like me from being “pretty good li’l B movie” to “this is actually advanced and high art” (this isn’t always the case on the HDS matrix, but it is consistent, see Repo Man). 

Mad Men, “The Chrysanthemum And The Sword”, “Waldorf Stories”

Real fool me once with your racism shame on you you, Roger Sterling. Fool me twice, shame on me (re: “The Chrysanthemum And The Sword”). “Waldorf Stories” is really the first episode put in gear this season, maybe it’s because we’re getting Ken Cosgrove back (hell yeh) or maybe it just feels that way because “The Suitcase” is next and I know it; it’s an incredible build-up, what with hindsight and all that.

Mel Brooks: Unwrapped, Yentob 2018 [as of now this is available on HBO]

Listen, this isn’t very good. I think some of it has to do with Brooks, who kind of gets in the way of it all, which is a very hard thing to admit. It’s got some moments, when it actually tells you something about Mel Brooks, but for the most part its just a British guy not taking command of his own documentary and subject and that’s just like barely interesting. Mel Brooks is still a king, though.

Mad Men, “The Suitcase”

This is regarded as the best episode of Mad Men and one of the best episodes of television in the 2010s. I don’t know how it stands up by itself, like I don’t know if it resonates well with someone who’s never watched Mad Men outside of the vacuum. Usually going into one of these episodes that almost transcends its own show I tend to be weary, be it brand new (like when I watched “Pine Barrens” for the first time when I watched The Sopranos) or on a re-watch like this. I trick myself into thinking “well I bet its not that good” because you’re told to the contrarian take is the most interesting take, but I didn’t with this one. I remember the first time I watched it and I don’t think I’ve gone back and watched it in years, so I had forgotten almost all of the context around the episode, except for the argument. This episode is really special, hands down. Don’t love the ghost, but pobody’s nerfect. This podcast talks about it way better than I ever could, listen to that instead of reading this (I just want yer clicks, suckers!)

Heartburn, Nichols 1986 [as of now this is available on Prime]

I say this as someone who doesn’t travel in Mike Nichols circles (though this is the fourth movie of his that I’ve watched during all this, so maybe I do and I just don’t know it), but why isn’t this trotted out more as one of his best movies? My Nora Ephron bias might be showing a lot here, someone I didn’t really appreciate until I watched Everything Is Copy about a year ago (it’s an HBO doc-meaning it’s available on that platform if you want nice documentary to watch sometime), but this movie’s great! And it has two of the most famous movie stars to ever live as the two lead roles and Jeff Daniels as a bit player. And yet its legacy only feels relevant to those who seek out Mike Nichols or Nora Ephron movies, which feels odd, considering one half of that creative team is best known for The Graduate and the other for When Harry Met Sally (or Sleepless In Seattle or You’ve Got Mail).

Kingdom Of Heaven (Director’s Cut), Scott 2005

I’ll be honest, I wanted to watch Return Of The King, but that just wasn’t an option. This movie’s technically good, like more Ridley Scott movies are than they aren’t, but really lacks any kind of new message besides “Religion’s pretty fucked up how it made people do that, huh?” Which to a lot of people is super appealing, but when you make a movie that only exists because of Lord Of The Rings’ success, you’d hope for something more (though isn’t this always the case with these kinds of movies?) Like make the movie about David Thewlis or Jeremy Irons. Obviously the battle/fight sequences are really cool to watch and look at, and that’s not an at all terrible critique to give it either. It’s fine that there’s dumb-guy Lord Of The Rings (which is semi-controversial considering a lot of the book nerds already consider Lord Of The Rings [movie] is dumb-guy Lord Of The Rings).

Mad Men, “The Summer Man”

Ah yes, the Don journals and goes swimming episode. It’s good considering it has to follow up “The Suitcase.” I can’t think of any from this particular episode, but (and I think it checks out, cultural timeline wise too) this is the season where it almost feels like the writers/directors figures out that their show was ripe for meme-dom and .gifs-sometimes when that happens it goes real south for the sake of quality, but luckily not Mad Men.

Jiro Dreams Of Sushi, Gelb 2011 [as of now this is available on Netflix]

I bet David Fincher loves this movie. I’m not a huge sushi lover (it’s fine, but way too expensive) so I guess I’ve figured that’d be a huge barrier for me to jump over to enjoy this doc. This thing’s got a weird, but great energy to it, where it feels like four twenty-minute segments sewn together; right when you think “well this should’ve just been a quick package on Frontline” it adds another wrinkle. Would probably be constructed more differently now, considering how food docs/series’ work now, but its strengths lie in its simplicity.

Top Chef, Season 17 episode 8

Great Restaurant Wars this season. Very compelling stuff and almost athletic. Andy Greenwald said it best.

Mad Men, “The Beautiful Girls”, “Hands And Knees”, “Chinese Wall”

“Beautiful Girls” is another entry into the best Mad Men episodes (though like “The Suitcase” I don’t think it would necessarily resonate out of context). Iconic closing shot and a great Sally Draper episode, who I’ve feared I might’ve been overrating for the last couple of years. Nah, Sally Draper is underrated even. Big spiral moves for Don as well in here, though hopefully he can course correct after tasting Sally’s rum-cooked French Toast (it won’t!)

Basic Instinct, Verhoeven 1992

I can’t imagine what it must feel like to be completely neutral about this movie; your life must be so care-free, so calming, so unconcerned with trying to figure out how exactly to start calling your close friends either “cowboy” or “hoss” as if you’ve been doing it your whole life. Also, listen, I get it about that one shot and it being the thing people kept talking about and the thing most associated with this movie, but nothing and no one prepared me for seeing Gus in a cowboy hat in that bar/club before the Nick/Roxie chase. That and all the ice-pick stabbings. And the opening crime scene. And a whole lot of other stuff that takes place in this movie.

Mad Men, “Blowing Smoke”, “Tomorrowland” [season 4 finale], “A Little Kiss Part 1 & 2″ [season 5 premier]

The letter! Disneyland! Marriage again! A lot of things happen in these four episodes that are the end and beginning of seasons. But when I realized that I was going to get “Zou Bisou Bisou” in this block of episodes, it was game over. I’ve had it stuck in my head every day for a prolonged amount of time since Saturday and the only thing that makes it not terrible is knowing how pissed off Don was that it happened to him. Don’t marry a 25-year-old. Season 4′s a weird one for Betty as the show tried to navigate how to keep her involved with the show even though she and Don aren’t married anymore and it’s not....great. Probably because they keep making her “true” emotional foil children (specifically Glen and to a greater level Sally, but the tribulations that come between a mother and almost teenage daughter shouldn’t be the same as a mother and some weird kid down the block who just happens to be the son of the show’s creator).

In the afternoon of April 23, Thursday, more than 100 small businessmen around Mumbai and Thane met through a conference call over the online conferencing software Zoom, to discuss the reopening of businesses after the lockdown. There was a quick consensus in the meeting that went on for nearly two hours — no one is ready to restart immediately. The supply chains for raw material simply do not exist at this point, even though some units have permissions to operate and others are expecting it in early May.

The meeting, organised by the Mumbai-based IMC Chamber of Commerce and Industry, had businessmen seeing May-end as a plausible date for reopening. But there was another, more startling, consensus emerging at the meeting organised to discuss a reopening playbook — at least 25-30% of the businesses would not survive the crisis created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

ET Magazine spoke to a dozen businessmen from across India — owners of businesses that fit into the category of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) — and found that this feeling of staring at an abyss was pervasive. The biggest worry is, of course, a liquidity crunch, followed by a disrupted supply chain and labour availability. The sector employs almost 12 crore people, making a large number of the country’s households dependent on the 63 million MSME units. It also accounts for a third of India’s manufacturing output and 45% of exports.

Many units have paid their workers wages for March in full and are prepared for April payments. While there are no revenues now, there is a government mandate to keep paying salaries and wages. There are other bills like electricity and water that also have to be paid. But without revenues or substantial government support, there is no way they can carry on in May and beyond. “Wages and salaries are the biggest issue, and everyone is sweeping it under the carpet,” says Ashish Vaid, president of the IMC that is also a federation of 170 industry associations from western India.

Labour Lost Vaid, himself a realtor with annual sales of Rs 200 crore, says all MSMEs should be eligible for bank loans equivalent to three months wages at repo rates. Multiple industry associations, including the Confederation of Indian Industry, have petitioned the government for a bailout package for the MSME sector (essentially all businesses with capital investments up to a maximum of Rs 10 crore).

Apart from loans to cover wages, there are othercommon requests like suspension of contributions to employee’s provident fund and Employee State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) for six months. Some demand that there should be a clawback of GST that has already been paid. Easier access to bank loans, especially at low rates, with help from the state and central governments, is another common theme, as is a moratorium on repayments for six months and a 25% increase in working capital loans. Seeking more loans and a simultaneous moratorium on repayments are also a sign of underlying desperation in the sector.

Take first-generation entrepreneur Raja Shanmugam of Tiruppur. His 31-year-old knitted T-shirts manufacturing unit Warsaw International employs 650-800 workers. At least 150 workers are currently lodged in the company’s hostels at Tiruppur. It is a labour-intensive industry and the annual wages bill is almost 30% of sales. Payment from his Indian as well as European buyers stopped in March, and Shanmugam has not been able to ship completed orders either. He wants the government to use ESIC money to take care of the workers’ wages from April onwards.

DK Aggarwal, president of PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an association of MSME organisations across states, says restarting units won’t be easy because of the liquidity crunch that the sector is facing. “Cash flow has stopped.

After paying April salaries, all MSMEs will be hand-to mouth.

Plus, there will be no demand, and workers would have also left for their villages.”

Reopening plants in May could lead to revenue flows restarting. But things won’t be so smooth. While there is general consensus that businesses should pay their workers through the lockdown, there are several restrictions on the use of the same workforce once a factory reopens.

Strict rules for social distancing while reopening are not viable for manufacturing units, especially MSME units that have small premises. Nayan Patel, a former president of IMC, explained that his own business, which makes motion control devices, needs a 150-member shift, with multiple processes, that cannot operate with fewer people.

The layout and configuration of machinery and workstations are such that it cannot be done. Many from across the country echo Patel’s view. For Jaipur-based switchgear maker Anil Saboo, the biggest worry is labour shortage, as many employees have left for their states in eastern India.

“There are 15 men living inside my factory today, but the moment the lockdown is lifted, they want to leave for home,” Saboo says.

Gurgaon-based Dev Goel, who runs a package substations and switchboard plant from Manesar, sees a big worry in maintaining social distance inside the factory while labourers work as welders, or lift large items. There was a fear of police action and FIRs being registered against factory owners if these norms were not followed and negligence led to Covid-19 infections in workers. The central government clarified last week that no businessperson will be arrested for workers getting infected with Covid-19 after reopening. However, restrictions have created impediments. Goel said almost 95% of the members of the Manesar Industries Welfare Association have decided to wait and watch and not rush into reopening their plants, in spite of having permission to restart.

Or, take the case of Chetanbhai Makwana, who runs a medicated soap manufacturing unit at Gheekanta, Ahmedabad. Makwana had started his soap unit as an essential service, with 20% staff, but had to shut it down on Friday as only one worker turned up for work.

Broken Chains Apart from cash crunches and labour dislocation, there are serious supply chain and regulatory issues that have affected the MSME sector.

For instance, permissions to restart operations do not come easily, even if you are deemed as an essential service. Amit Seksaria, managing director of RRL Steels Group in Kolkata, says he received a letter from Coal India on April 8, asking him to restart operations. His unit makes ground engaging tools for coal mining and hence is deemed to be an essential service linked to the power sector. However, his application for restarting, filed with the state government, is yet to elicit a reply. While one of his units is in a Covid-19 hotspot, the other one is in a rural area. Seksaria also exports to the Netherlands and Spain and export consignments have been loaded on containers at his factory near Kolkata for orders from these countries. “I am receiving urgent missives from my European buyers but I am not able to send these containers to the Haldia port, which I am told is operating,” Seksaria says.

An injection-moulding unit owner in Daman said he is in a similar predicament, as he manufactures packaging material for the pharmaceuticals industry, but his application for restarting his unit has been stuck at the collector’s office, while some of the larger plants have got permission. Unwilling to be quoted, he says that as a buyer of polypropylene from very large petrochemical companies and a supplier of bottle caps to big pharmaceutical companies, his cash flow is usually squeezed as he has to buy with cash and supply on credit. The crisis has aggravated his problem.

In large parts of Uttar Pradesh, while there is no ban, the non-vegetarian food chain has virtually shut down. Eggs, though, are selling. Mukul Tandon, president of the Merchant’s Chamber of Uttar Pradesh, owns a poultry business, with 75,000 eggs per day. “The retail channels have collapsed and we do not know how to sell the eggs. The industry as a whole in the state produces almost 6 lakh eggs per day. While costs are Rs 3.75 per egg, I am forced to sell them at Rs 2-2.5,” Tandon told ET Magazine.

To mitigate the impact on MSME sector, the RBI (Reserve Bank of India) has announced a set of relief measures on March 27. A second set of measures was announced on April 17. These measures were primarily meant to maintain adequate liquidity in the system, facilitate and incentivise bank credit flows, ease financial stress and enable the normal functioning of the sector.

The road ahead is not easy. As a nation, we need to fight this together. Industry associations have highlighted their demands in my interactions. Some suggestions require total government support, while others require policy changes and facilitation. We can’t be guided only by the response of other countries. Our economy has its own unique features and hence its own requirements for a return to normalcy. I can assure you that PM Modiji is fully aware of the situation and under his leadership we will be able to chalk a way forward for supporting MSMEs in the best possible way.

Is there any plan to help MSME units with wage payment if lockdown continues beyond May 3? The government on March 26 announced a Rs 1.7 lakh crore relief package under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana (PMGKY) for the poor to help them fight the battle against the coronavirus pandemic. As part of the said package, the Centre proposes to pay the EPF (Employees’ Provident Fund) contribution for next three months of certain categories of employees.

Our objective is to get the best impact of government support not only for MSMEs but also for the poor. There has to be a balance and the result should be the highest impact of government support on society.

The threat of an FIR in case a new infection is detected at a factory has scared many MSME owners. Would you like to reassure them? Social distancing is a reality. The Home Ministry has issued several orders and guidelines, which provide the framework for economic activity to resume, respecting norms of social distancing and personal hygiene. Industrial units and business establishments need to reinvent their workspaces to comply with the guidelines for their own safety as well as the safety of the workers. The Home Ministry has also clarified that the lockdown guidelines should not be misused to harass the management of manufacturing and commercial establishments. That should help in addressing any fears. We are proactively dealing with such issues.

Once business is disrupted, it is difficult for smaller players to recoup and restart. Seksaria says that unless there is an opportunity to start production in May, businesses will start crumbling. Goel of Manesar adds, the lockdown may be followed by lockouts.

Not every MSME business owner is pessimistic.

Bhopal-based entrepreneur Kunal Giani says his motto of constantly focusing on cash flows and staying debt free has held him in good stead today. Giani started his business in rebonded foam, a raw material for mattresses, in 2011, straight out of college. Giani’s father, a banker, had taken voluntary retirement in 2006 to start the business. Bad luck struck and he died in an accident before he could start.

No one was ready to lend to a young man selling mattress foam on a bike. The company is a debt-free operation today.

With sales of Rs 110-135 crore and two plants, one in Bhopal and another in Uttar Pradesh’s Secunderabad, Giani says he is in a good position to pay salaries for April. The raw material stock, chemicals imported from Southeast Asia, can also last a few months. The lockdown has, of course, impacted his plans to start a new factory in Colombo to supply the south Indian markets. It has also affected the launch of a new product, a mattress that comes in a box, priced at Rs 1,000.

Giani’s firm Sarva Foam Industries is an exception.

But he, too, wants to borrow today and is seeking easier access to credit. However, most small businesses in India are not built like that, points out Nayan Patel. “MSME businesses are usually a month-to-month operation, with little reserves for the future. A disruption like this might just mean restarting everything,” Patel says.

Therefore, a lot of hope is now pinned on moves by the government of India and state governments. Various MSME bodies have even sought income-tax sops. Many MSMEs operate as sole proprietorship firms or partnerships, and are not eligible for the lower corporate tax rates, announced by the finance minister in mid-2019. The US has announced a $484 billion stimulus package for small businesses. The MSME entrepreneurs are hoping that Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will draw some inspiration from it and announce a package for Indian small businesses too. After all, her first package of Rs 1.7 lakh crore also drew inspiration from US action. Others, knowing the Indian government has little leeway, have set their eyes on social security funds like the EPF or the ESIC. For a large and critically important sector that generates a large number of jobs and supplies components for nearly every product that we use, no easy solutions are in sight.

In a Fix Over Accommodation by Prerna Katiyar It is 6 am when a bus pulls into Bhangel in Noida. A handful of employees of Medico Electrodes International Limited form a queue to board the vehicle provided by their employer. But first, an attender checks if they are wearing masks properly and sprays sanitisers on their hands. The bus is filled from the back — one in each seat, every other row. Except for the occasional ringing of mobile phones, the ride to office is eerily silent.

Medico, which makes disposable ECG electrodes, picks up its workers from multiple locations in a 3-4 km radius around its factory in Noida special economic zone (SEZ). It takes adequate precautions. “The buses are disinfected after every trip,” says company’s CMD Amit Mehra. “So is the factory after every shift.”

Before they enter the factory, workers also go through a thermal screening and hand washing-sanitising routine. They also get fresh masks are head caps.

Medico, classified as an essential service unit, has been working at 50% staff capacity with 300 workers across three shifts since the lockdown. CMD Mehra has been busier than ever, juggling between video-conferencing with staff working from home and domestic and foreign clients. He visits the production floor regularly to check social distancing and other sanitation arrangements. “We give free ration to all workers every fortnight, provided additional Rs 3 lakh Covid-19 insurance cover and are providing transportation services,” he says. Regular counselling is also provided to help workers.

But Mehra, who managed to run his operations through the severe lockdown, faces a serious problem as the government partly opens economic activities.

An order issued on April 22 by the deputy commissioner of the district industries centre, Gautam Buddh Nagar, to provide accommodation to workers within or nearby factory has put him in a bind. “We have three days to comply with the order or shut shop. How can we make such arrangements for 250 people so fast? Besides, will the families of our 60-odd women workers allow them to stay at factories? We are a healthcare unit. Do we shut down now?” says Mehra.

As such, the operations at Medico had slowed due to social distancing. During lunchtime, only one worker is allowed to sit in a table. So it takes almost three hours for the entire team to finish their meals and return to work after a round of sanitisation.

The situation is almost same at the 13 essential sector units among the 250 factories operational at Noida SEZ now. As the morning shift comes to an end at Medico, workers toss the used head caps and masks in a bin, wash and sanitise their hands and wear fresh face covers. Soon they line up a metre apart to board the buses for a ride back home. All in a day’s work now.

80′s GLAM BLONDIE GOES BOATING

Here's another one for my list of great 80s cult movies, one I will remember as fondly as Repo Man, Blue Velvet and Videodrome. The vision is maybe less accomplished but as vibrant as those films, basically what we get at first glance is something between Daisies (the Czech film) and a Yugoslav film I recently discovered called W.R. - Mysteries of the Organism, with many of the same preoccupations— youth, feminism, freedom of expression, attitudes to sex, contrasted with repressive mores in men and sex. The obvious metaphor used here is aliens (as in a flying saucer lands in New york) for the emerging glam punk scene with its androgynous Bowie sex-image and post-Factory and Warhol scene with its drugs and ersatz madness as style. AIDS had officially entered the lexicon the year before, this is reflected in the film as the men evaporating when they achieve an orgasm with our 'alien' heroine. The whole worldview behind this is what you can expect from the 80s. Rejection, solipsism, a general detachment from anything that does not please a sense of escape and fulfillment now, a numbed attitude I normally find vacant. Usually mistaken as Zen, it seems to attach itself to American youth every decade or so since the mods. And yet the dignified assertion of individuality in the face of small-mindedness and abuse shows a still sparkling soul—the girl casually invites to her place a stranger from the club because he promised cocaine, and seems surprised and mildly disgusted that he lied and basically expected sex. Three women are finding out the men in their lives are not worth it, the junkie boyfriend is more interested in his own pleasures, the German in his science of 'observing'. The young model, who exists with more freedom outside the norm, unconsciously removes them from the story. In the end, this synthetic avatar of freedom and unconventionality is consumed and magically disappears in the night as the two women watch. In its nested layering of created situations where a woman explores by allowing fragmented selves to be explored, this is situated close to two of my favorite movies of all time, another Eastern European film called Loves of A Blonde, and Celine and Julie. It's an 80s take on dreamy flight. It's all here so lovely and heartfelt about the overall world, with its heady cocktail of now innocent strangeness and still evocative flicker in the eye. The New York penthouse at night, with its open balcony to gleaming skyscrapers is one of the most vital spaces in any film I know. The cool, composed rejection of fixed roles and images, tuning out minus the constructed cosmology of world-renewal of a decade earlier. The painted faces of models casually desperate to be captured against the gleaming skyscraper-void, stating nothing beyond the flickering moment of things coming to be. The parting shot with our heroine lost in her dervish spin in the dark, a dreamy incarnation that couldn't last.

Apache Spark Deep Learning with BigDL:  How to Get Started

What is BigDL?

If you’re reading this article, you probably already know what BigDL is, but in either case, here is the definition from the men and women @ Intel:

BigDL is a distributed deep learning library for Apache Spark; with BigDL, users can write their deep learning applications as standard Spark programs, which can directly run on top of existing Spark or Hadoop clusters. To make it easy to build Spark and BigDL applications, a high level Analytics Zoo is provided for end-to-end analytics + AI pipelines. 

For a bit more detail, BigDL is a distributed deep learning framework built for Apache Spark, and created by the great people @ Intel.  BigDL is optimized to run on Intel CPUs, and more specifically on Apache Spark clusters.

In this article we’ll review why you might use it, and how you can get started with it!

Why use BigDL?

Again, if you’re reading this article you probably already have an idea as to why you want this, but in either case, here is what the creators of BigDL have to say on the subject:

You may want to write your deep learning programs using BigDL if:

You want to analyze a large amount of data on the same Big Data (Hadoop/Spark) cluster where the data are stored (in, say, HDFS, HBase, Hive, etc.).

You want to add deep learning functionalities (either training or prediction) to your Big Data (Spark) programs and/or workflow.

You want to leverage existing Hadoop/Spark clusters to run your deep learning applications, which can be then dynamically shared with other workloads (e.g., ETL, data warehouse, feature engineering, classical machine learning, graph analytics, etc.)

I think the 3rd reason listed above says it all.  In addition, let’s say I have a LOT of data and I want to do deep learning.  Well, having a lot of data is definitely a good thing.  But even running my deep learning training on my enormous amount of data takes a long time on a single machine running 1 GPU because I have to load data into memory in batches, and I have a LOT of data.  So what do can I do?

Well, the next thing I might do is invest in another GPU and run my deep learning using a framework like Horovod.  Or I might get another machine with 1 or more GPUs, so now I have 2 machines with >=1 GPUs per machine and I use Horovod to do my deep learning.  What could go wrong?  Right?  Well the issue now becomes $$$$$.

If you’ve ever purchased a GPU instance on AWS or bought a laptop with a NVIDIA GPU, you might have noticed that GPUs ARE EXPENSIVE!!

So how might I train my neural network without breaking the bank?  This is where BigDL comes into play!

If you’ve ever tried to spin up a EMR cluster on AWS, you might have noticed something as well, EMR CLUSTERS ARE CHEAP!!

Hooray!  Now it’s might be possible to train my neural network without breaking the bank!!

Getting Started

Okay, so now I’m interested, what do I do next?

The next thing I might do, is to start reading the BigDL documentation.

As you read through this, you might notice that you have some options here.  You can try to install BigDL on a cluster right off the bat, or you can test out BigDL on a single machine using PySpark and the pip install.

Lesson #1:  Test our your code using a single machine install first!  

In this article, we choose to test out BigDL on a single machine using PySpark and the pip install.  Why?  Well the truth is that we started off with the cluster install and we ran into issues, and then it was hard to debug. 

Getting this to run on a cluster isn’t necessarily hard, but as you’re training your neural network you’ll start to ask yourself “Is it my code that’s wrong or did I mess up the install”?  So it’s easier to get your code running and working on a single instance (as a test environment) and then you can run that same code on a cluster.  Now if you hit any issues you know the issue is most likely related to running it in cluster mode since you already tested your code on a single instance.

This was a hard lesson, and we really suggest doing things this way.  Okay, so we’re sold on getting this running on a single machine first, so how do we do that?

If you’ve browsed the BigDL documentation you might notice they have a bunch of examples.  Hooray again!  We have some base code to work off of!  

Are there issues with the examples?  Of course!  We wouldn’t be writing this article if there wasn’t.  So now what?

Have no fear!  We have more advise to assist!!  (And that’s why we wrote this article).

Lesson #2:  If you have a Windows machine, use a Linux VM on your local machine or an Amazon Workspace.

The first thing to note is that you need a Max or Linux OS to run the PySpark\Python install-from-pip option.

Being a Windows user, I’ve installed extra memory (24GB) on my machine and I use Virtual Box with a Ubuntu image.

If you don’t have a lot of memory on your machine, you can also try Amazon Workspaces which gives you a Linux machine in the cloud (note that this is a RedHat flavor of Linux, so you need to use ‘yum’ instead of ‘apt-get’).

Lesson #3:  You need JDK>=8

If you don’t have JDK>=8, and you’re on Linux, you can run the following lines:

Lesson #4:  Get your own data and run through the example line by line.

This is the final and best advice I can give.  After getting everything installed correctly (which wasn’t that hard) what really helped was not just running an example, but using different data and trying to get everything to run again.  We took data from a Kaggle competition (an image competition) and the hardest part was getting that data into a RDD of Sample format!

I’m not a big advocate of Jupyter, but it’s a great development environment, and we walked through every line and made sure every line was producing our expected result.  Again, the hardest part was getting the data into the format of RDD of Sample, and this took a LOT of playing around and code dissecting.  

In the end, we were able to get a neural network to train!

Conclusion.

We didn’t get the neural network to train to any set level of accuracy, but we were able to get the code running and thus we could use our working code on a large cluster for a full training job.  In short, we showed we could get the code to work.  Again, to view our code, you can check out the following GitHub repo.

Wait did carver ship destiel???

Carver created it.

Let me explain. (Disclaimer: I don’t have a telepathic connection to anyone involved in the making of Supernatural, so I may be wrong.)

Fandoms are quick at shipping things. Especially if attractive white men are concerned. Sometimes they don’t even need two characters to have ever shared a scene to ship them. Imagine what happens when two attractive white men have a conversation and stare into each other’s eyes while doing it. The first Dean/Castiel fics started being published online hours after Lazarus Rising aired. But the fandom didn’t expect the show to actually give the angel Castiel a storyline about a romantic relationship with Dean, of course! It was one of the ships you’ll find fics on the internet because the internet writes fics about any combination of characters possible. They even write fics about characters who were in different seasons and never knew about each other’s existence. (Hell, even characters from different shows altogether.)

Season 4 goes on and hey, Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins have a stunning chemistry together. The showrunners are really happy about it, and decide to keep Castiel’s character around, because the audience has responded very favorably to him and the actor’s interpretation of him and everything is beautiful.

Now, the show, ever since day 1, has built a subtextual narrative around Dean’s character, relatively to his sexuality. Season 4 makes no exception - like they’ve always done, they build a parallel between Sam’s connection to a female demon to Dean’s connection to a male angel. The show does not mean to make Dean/Castiel “canon” - it’s one of the ingredients of the bisexuality subtextual narrative that runs through the show. Season 4 is written by people like Cathryn Humphris, the duo Dabb-Loflin, Jeremy Carver himself, Ben Edlund - all people very keen in developing this narrative. That Carver is very fascinated by the dynamic between Dean and Castiel, starts appearing fairly evident in his episode The Rapture, but we can say everything is still under the subtextual bisexuality narrative umbrella. (Jensen does not have a strong grasp of the word subtlety.)

Season 5 starts and writers start writing episodes. Ben Edlund works on episode 4, for instance, and you can see that subtextual bisexuality narrative in all its splendor, with details such as future Dean implying he has a sexual relationship with future Castiel (all in the realm of the totally plausible deniability, of course, because subtext).

But Jeremy Carver works on episode 3 and boi. Free To Be You And Me, in my humble opinion, is the act of foundation of Destiel as A Thing.

Not that the show has intentions of ever developing a textual romantic/sexual relationship between the two characters at this point of its history, of course. But boi - a lot of people start really enjoying the idea of playing with it with more intensity than your average Dean-is-bi subtextual dynamic thing. In my humble opinion, if Carver is N°1 Destiel creator, Mr Jensen Ross Ackles is N°2 Destiel creator. “But Jensen said--” of course he did, because in his mind it was part of the subtextual bisexuality narrative, just a big part of it. That’s why he was surprised at the name-dropping of “Destiel” in Fan Fiction, for instance - it took him a while to fully understand the shifting from subtext to text, and it threw him a little off balance.

Now let’s go back to season 5. People jump on the Destiel subtext wagon, they make Dean and Cas grow closer and closer and rub their hands at how great Jensen and Misha are when working together. Season 6 comes and they decide to give Castiel a large role in the narrative of the season, because he’s a fan favorite and Misha is just great at the thing. Now, they have to decide how to make the season nice and totally excruciatingly painful - Gamble, Singer & friends wonder, how do we totally shatter the characters? Someone comes up with the idea of literally breaking Sam’s mind and whatever, and someone comes up with the idea of breaking up Dean and Cas breaking Dean and Cas’ relationship. Carver isn’t working on this season, but hey, he was a big - the biggest, arguably - contributor in building the amazing dynamic between Dean and Cas. Gamble and Singer (whatever you think of them) realize that the most efficient way to break Dean is to take Cas away from him.

Season 7 happens and Gamble and Singer continue the whole ‘losing Castiel is the think that shatters Dean’ thing. Ben Edlund really enjoys the thing and Repo Man demonstrates it, because Ben Edlund destroyed subtlety before Robbie Thompson made it cool (that’s not true, it was cool with Edlund too). Now, I have no idea how they were going to fix the situation if Gamble had stayed showrunner. Thing is, the show’s ratings are bad, something isn’t working, the network isn’t happy, or whatever, and they have to change the cards.

And guess what happens - there you go! Our Jeremy Carver pops up and says, I know how to fix this. I become showrunner for the next seasons, you end this season as a set-up for my new plans. Alright, what should we do? they ask. Bring Castiel back! he says. But he’s, like, super dead, they reply. So Carver pulls Castiel out of his ass, pretty much, because ‘lol he’s alive after all although there’s no reason why he should be’ isn’t a great narrative choice, but our Carver doesn’t give a crap and tells Gamble, bring the buy back. Gamble does it, the season ends up in a way that sets up Carver’s plans, and there you have Carver as the Big Boss.

The Carver era makes Destiel an actual, genuine plotline. Say whatever you want about queerbaiting or whatever - it doesn’t take away the fact that the nature of the relationship between Dean and Castiel, and the way it differs from the kind of relationships Dean has with family members, and establishing it as love is one of the big plotlines of Carver’s seasons.

Now Carver has left the show to explore new shores, but the show has been inherited by Mr Andrew “how can I make people interested in a random heterosexual couple that has absolutely nothing interesting about them, oh right I’ll give them that one Destiel dialogue from that one time, ahaha everything hurts” Dabb, so...

So far, artificial intelligence’s development has outpaced regulation. Now regulation has to catch up.

Artificial intelligence is here, and it’s impacting our lives in real ways — whether it’s the Alexa smart speaker on our nightstand, online customer service chatbots, or the smart replies Google drafts for our emails.

But so far, the tech’s development has outpaced regulation. Now, government agencies are increasingly encountering AI-based tools, and they must figure out how to evaluate them. Take the Food and Drug Administration, which greenlights new medical products: It needs to review and approve new health care products that boast AI-capabilities — like this one that promises to detect eye problems related to diabetes — before they’re sold to us. Or consider the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which investigates employment discrimination. Today, the agency must also make decisions about AI-based hiring algorithms, like those that screen job candidates’ resumes and decide whether or not you deserve an interview.

On Wednesday at CES, the prominent Las Vegas-based technology trade show, White House officials formally announced how the Office of Science and Technology wants federal agencies to approach regulating new artificial intelligence-based tools and the industries that develop the tech.

The White House’s proposed AI guidance discusses some of the biggest concerns technologists, AI ethicists, and even some government officials have about the technology, but the guidelines are centered most on encouraging innovation in artificial intelligence and making sure regulations don’t “needlessly” get in the way.

That reflects an ongoing problem for AI, one that’s already played out in other tech sectors, where a rush to innovate without much oversight has only come to back haunt us.

While encouraging innovation in AI is certainly a consideration, critics of the technology have said that regulators must scrutinize artificial intelligence more closely as it continues to be rolled out in the real world. They argue that artificial intelligence can replicate, and even amplify, human biases. These tools often function in black boxes — meaning that they’re proprietary and operated by the companies that sell them — which makes it difficult for us to know when or how they might be harming real people (or if they even work as intended). And new AI-based tools can also raise concerns about privacy and surveillance.

For now, these new guidelines are just that — guidelines — which means that today’s memo won’t have an immediate effect on the artificial intelligence tech you might encounter in your daily life. But the memo shows how the government is thinking about AI and its potential impact on Americans. “People should care that the White House is trying to bring a framework for assessing and justifying the deployment of AI tools, because what we’re finding as these tools develop and emerge is that there are some applications that have deeper consequences than others,” said Nicol Turner-Lee, a fellow at the Brookings Institution who researches technology and equity.

The Trump administration wants a national AI effort

Trump and his administration want the US to dominate the AI industry — and they definitely want the US to be better at AI than China. Early last year, President Donald Trump signed an executive order establishing the “American A.I. Initiative,” which is meant to jumpstart AI research and help build an AI-competent US workforce, among other goals (though he didn’t give the effort any new funding).

“Federal agencies must avoid ... needlessly hamper[ing] AI innovation and growth”

Outlining 10 primary principles, today’s memo to federal departments and agencies echoes the goals of that executive order. It urges regulators to be mindful of innovation and to “consider ways to reduce barriers to the development and adoption” of AI when weighing how existing laws and potential new rules apply to the emerging technology.

“Federal agencies must avoid regulatory or non-regulatory actions that needlessly hamper AI innovation and growth,” says the memo. “Agencies must avoid a precautionary approach that holds AI systems to such an impossibly high standard that society cannot enjoy their benefits.” At the same time, the guidance also urges regulators to be conscientious of values like transparency, risk management, fairness, and nondiscrimination.

These are all fair points. By encouraging these federal departments and agencies to take action, the Trump administration also hopes to avoid a future in which American AI companies might face a patchwork of local and state regulation, or possibly overreaching federal regulation, that could impede the technology’s expansion.

AI experts told Recode that the AI guidelines are a starting point. “It will take time to assess how effective these principles are in practice, and we will be watching closely,” said Rashida Richardson, the director of policy research at the AI Now Institute. “Establishing boundaries for the federal government and the private sector around AI technology will offer greater insight to those of us working in the accountability space.”

Aaron Rieke, the managing director of the technology rights nonprofit Upturn, said in an email to Recode that, for now, he doesn’t think the memo will have much influence: “I do not think these principles will have much of an impact on the average person, especially in the short term. I think regulators will be able to justify their decisions, good or bad, without much effort.”

Importantly, the memo doesn’t actually apply to artificial intelligence that the US government itself uses (of which there’s plenty). For instance, a search of a US federal contracts database shows that the Centers for Disease Control has purchased facial recognition products (an AI-based technology), while the Department of Commerce appears to be using AI to improve its patent search system.

One of the reasons AI needs regulations: It comes with risks

AI systems are not inherently objective. Humans build these tools, and AI is often developed using flawed or biased data, which means the technology can inherit or even magnify human biases like sexism and racism. For instance, when in 2017 scientists taught a computer program to learn the English language by mining the internet, it ultimately became prejudiced against women and black people.

Critics say that risk means the government should aggressively regulate, and even ban, certain applications of artificial intelligence. And some AI tools, like facial recognition, that rely on collecting sensitive information, have also spurred concerns about how this tech could potentially create privacy and surveillance nightmares.

“AI systems have a potential to discriminate against the American public on the basis of race, sex, gender — every sort of criteria imaginable”

This all matters because AI already has the potential to have a real impact on your life, even if you haven’t realized it yet. Some landlords have floated requiring tenants to use facial recognition to enter their homes, even though the technology is known to be less accurate on people of color and women (and especially women with dark skin), among other groups. Another example: Though never used, a resume-screening algorithm produced by Amazon inadvertently discriminated against female applicants because it was trained on resumes the company had previously collected, which mostly came from men. Imagine losing out on your dream job because of a biased algorithm.

“AI systems have a potential to discriminate against the American public on the basis of race, sex, gender — every sort of criteria imaginable,” Albert Fox Cahn, an attorney who leads the Surveillance Technology Oversight Project at New York University, told Recode. “This could impact everything from whether you get a job offer, whether you get approved for an apartment or a mortgage, whether you get the good interest rate or the bad interest rate. It could impact college admissions and school placement.”

That’s left him disappointed with the new proposed guidelines. “Rather than provide a framework for regulators to actually address discrimination head-on, instead the White House is urging a hands-off approach which will allow AI to simply target historically marginalized communities without the interventions we need,” said Cahn. He said the memo’s references to values of nondiscrimination and transparency don’t have much force behind them.

“When you think of where most consumers are more AI-vulnerable, it’s in those areas like housing, health care, and employment — the areas that primarily make the front page of the newspaper,” said Turner-Lee. She said it’s not clear what the memo will mean for agencies like the Department of Labor and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau as compared to, say, the Department of Agriculture.

She adds that it’s also not clear whether agencies are actually prepared to identify the risks AI tech poses, or if they’re up to the job of ensuring their regulations keep pace with innovation. “There’s a lot more of the devil in the details that I’d like to see, but I think they’re just trying to give us a general framework for some kind of ethical and fair deployment.”

Now the White House wants feedback, including yours

The draft guidance isn’t set in stone. For the next several months, it will be subject to public feedback, including yours (we’ll update this piece with how to do that as soon as the information becomes available). Once the guidance is formally approved, the White House expects that agencies will report back on how they plan to meet its new AI expectations.
