(10/11) “It took several months to manufacture the collection. But we kept sharing our story on social media. And we kept sending out samples. By the time we were ready to launch, 45,000 people had signed up for our mailing list. On the first day of sales our website crashed. And by the end of six months we’d sold 12,000 pairs of shoes. Our company expanded to twenty-five employees. But despite our success, our insecurities still worked against us. We were still immigrants. And brown. We had spent so many of our formative years learning from Americans: listening to their interviews, reading their articles. But now we were running our own company. We had to stick with our own instincts, even when Americans disagreed with us. It hasn’t always been an easy road. It seemed that whenever we took a big step forward, a disaster would happen. We went through a round of layoffs. And the beginning of the pandemic was a dark time for us. Our money was nearly gone, and our investors would not commit another penny. That’s when I made the decision to produce a collection of masks. Everyone advised me against it. They told me to stick to shoes. But I developed the samples in secret, built the supply chain, and launched the collection myself. One year later we’ve sold 500,000 of them, and donated 500,000 more. Our shoe business has continued to grow, and once again investors are calling on the phone. That’s how it’s always been. Over the past ten years, every time it’s seemed like we’ve reached the end, something wonderful happens. Last weekend Waqas and I took our first break in a long time. We took a train to the Hudson Valley. And for the first time ever, we had no plan. We gave ourselves a moment. A moment to celebrate how far we’d come. We visited a few art galleries. We joked about how we’d both developed taste. Then we went back to our room and pulled up some of our early websites. We had a good laugh at who we used to be. Just two kids from a small town in Pakistan, who escaped their conservative families. Who dreamed something together. And just kept going. The dream kept changing, but we kept going. And look at us now. Look where we are. And look who we’ve become.”

This week, we celebrate just of few of the many cultural landscapes around the national park system with features tied to food production or procurement. We will look at the history and continued stewardship of these places where we connect to the land, our past, and each other.
A Garden for Home and Country
The Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, located in the Hudson Valley town of Hyde Park about 80 miles north of New York City, is the only place in the United States where a president was born, lived throughout his life, and was buried.
The landscape reflects not only FDR’s personal values and those of his family, but also the environmental and social ideas that he fostered in the programs of his presidency.
Springwood
The Roosevelt family estate was one of many country homes that once lined the Hudson River. It was the place where FDR was born and grew up, and where he and his wife Eleanor raised a family, struggled to overcome polio, met with political constituencies, held addresses to the state and nation, and found retreat from public life. James Roosevelt, FDR’s father, purchased the first part of the estate in 1867 and named it Springwood.

While the house at Springwood is certainly a focal point, it is one part of the landscape. The surrounding estate is also important to understanding the life and values of the Roosevelts (NPS Photo).
The Home area was at the center of the expansive estate, with an eighteenth-century house enlarged in the Colonial Revival style in 1915-1916 situated on a ridge overlooking the Hudson River. The estate’s formal hedge-enclosed garden and a large vegetable garden were adjacent to the house. FDR sited his presidential library within an agricultural field, with his library office looking out over the gardens.  Beyond the historic core, the estate landscape was characterized by working farmland, with cultivated fields, pastures, and managed woodlands.
The Home Garden
The farms of this region grew a variety of crops in gardens, fields, and orchards and maintained livestock for meat, eggs, and dairy.  Large home gardens were typical features of Hudson River estate farms, and the vegetable garden was a central part of life for the Roosevelts. FDR grew up around it, and his children and grandchildren helped pull weeds and harvest ripe produce. His memories of the garden shaped his values and his connection to the landscape around his Hudson Valley home.

During the early years of the national historic site, its emphasis was on caring for and preserving the buildings and the gravesite and meeting demands of heavy visitation. The large vegetable garden was paved over and replaced by a parking lot in 1948. More recently, parking was relocated to its present location, allowing for a full restoration of the Home Garden.
In 2016, the NPS began the restoration on the Roosevelt Home Garden. The plan reestablishes contemporary agricultural use of the garden for educational and interpretive purposes based on the World War II Victory Garden program, fostering self-sufficiency in food production.

With research and planning assistance from the NPS's Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation and the Environmental School of Forestry at the State University of New York, Syracuse, documentation and working plans were developed to guide the garden restoration.

A treatment plan for the Home Garden, from the 2009 Springwood Cultural Landscape Report, is an example of the research and planning work that precede preservation projects on cultural landscapes (NPS/Olmsted Center for Landscape Preservation).
The garden provides fertile ground for exploring both Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt's ties to the land and their commitment to ensuring an ample food supply for the nation.
