G.K. Chesterton once wrote, " . . . For the pleasure of pedantry I will call it the Doctrine of Conditional Joy. Touchstone talked of much virtue in an "if"; according to elfin ethics all virtue is in an "if." The note of the fairy utterance always is, "You may live in a palace of gold and sapphire, if you do not say the word 'cow'"; or "You may live happily with the King's daughter, if you do not show her an onion." The vision always hangs upon a veto. All the dizzy and colossal things conceded depend upon one small thing withheld. All the wild and whirling things that are let loose depend upon one thing that is forbidden."*

Chesterton went on to suggest that this is because the greatest story ever told, in its first chapter, also hinged on such an ultimatum.

"In the fairy tale an incomprehensible happiness rests upon an incomprehensible condition. A box is opened, and all evils fly out. A word is forgotten, and cities perish. A lamp is lit, and love flies away. A flower is plucked, and human lives are forfeited. An apple is eaten, and the hope of God is gone."*

"And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”" (Genesis 2:16-17)

It makes sense, then, that in so many stories, the Antagonist makes a counter-offer, whether implicit or explicit. You may show the Princess as many onions as you wish, if you give up having her for your bride. You may say the word "cow" every day for the rest of your life- so long as you relinquish your palace.

We ate of the tree and became like God, knowing good and evil-- and so we were sentenced to death.

It's all about control, in the end. We want things to be on our terms. We trust no hands but our own-- so rather than accept the terms given to us, we choose our own. We reach for power, for control, for more than we have been given-- and in our grasping, we let slip the one thing that was truly of value all along. Afraid of being lied to, we mistake truth for lies. Unwilling to trust the Faithful One, we put our trust in that which is unstable. Refusing to submit to goodness, we leap to the side of evil and rebel.

And how gloriously fitting is it, then, that the Second Adam-- that the Redeemer-- that Jesus would be the first to be made that counter-offer (knowing full well what would happen should He accept or refuse) and to turn it down?

Wingfeather Saga merch survey!

So I discovered an email from the Wingfeather Saga today with a short survey about potential future Wingfeather merch- INCLUDING a place where you can make a plea for merch YOU want to see them make.

This is ask blog that I have for fun, I have my main blog — @hal-strider9k where you can ask questions that not related to this ask blog. I've wanted to make this blog "anonymous" but there's not need for that as I see.

White From SBURB is a russian fan comic that takes place in Homestuck setting but have it's own characters and plot.

WFS had gone into hiatus for 2 months 'cause I was having a lot of work on myself due to New Year and Christmas events and my laptop had died so I got a new one (I'm second beta in comic and one of co-authors) and other colleagues had their own problems with studying and holidays, yadda yadda. Don't worry, we will be back around February with new update.

Thoughts on the Sunken Mountains, the Fane of Fire, the First Well, and the Ancient Stones

The Sunken Mountains were once the home of the dragons, and are indicated by most sources (the appendices of books 1 and 2) to have once been a collection of island-mountains, rising alone from the sea. 

We know that they collapsed into the sea because of the tunnelling of Yurgen’s folk when he was counselled by Ouster Will to seek the Holore. Whether this means that the Sunken Mountains were once near Anyara, and the land plates have since shifted, or that the Fane of Fire runs the whole length and breadth of Aerwiar, no source is certain. We do know that Yurgen dug straight down, rather than horizontally, so these two seem to be the most likely options. 

This happened at the end of the First Epoch, which had lasted a thousand years. 

Here, the sources seem to disagree with each other. In the appendices of Book 3, we’re told that Omer went to Yurgen after the sinking of the mountains, to ask that the dragon king rend Anyara from the mainland and make it an island, to protect it from Will. Elsewhere, however, we’re told that the floods directly resulting from the sinking of the mountains were what ripped Anyara away from Dang. 

Another interesting question is why exactly the Holore are known as “healing stones.” One could speculate that Will merely made it up to get Yurgen to dig into the Fane of Fire, but we’re told in a footnote in Book 1 that the Holore actually do function this way- “similar to Water from the First Well.” 

This brings up two interesting points: 

How exactly did Will come up with the idea of the Song of the Ancient Stones? For that matter, how did the Holore work when they were used the right way? We know that Janner could feel a “tingling in his fingers” when he held one of the Ancient Stones– does that mean that one simply had to hold them or come in contact with them to be healed? Was there a song before the Song of the Ancient Stones, one that wasn’t bent and broken? 

2. How exactly does the Water from the First Well work? We know that it heals physical wounds– it took care of Nugget’s spear wound and Podo’s stab wound with no trouble (and in Nugget’s case, went above and beyond what was expected), as well as saving Oood’s life– but although we’re told in Book 4 that Gnag drank the rest of Ouster Will’s store of First Well water after he killed him, we know that Gnag wasn’t healed of any of his physical deformities. Also, as we know, Podo’s leg didn’t re-grow.

Does this mean that the Water can only heal fresh wounds? 

No– the dragons’ wings had long since atrophied into fins when the Water healed them. Hulwen may have even been born a sea dragon. 

Perhaps it merely can’t heal what isn’t there. 

Then why wasn’t Gnag healed? 

We’re never told any reason for this– but I have my speculations. It did, after all, give him a long life– just as  it had done for Ouster Will. (To quote Aslan, “things always work according to their nature.”) But perhaps the attitude and approach with which one receives the Water affects how it works upon them (similar to singing the Song of the Ancient Stones for love or power).
