I can't think of any hobby more wallet friendly than picking up a pencil and paper. Like this is just plain stupid.

Also, I'm not an artist and I don't have drawings skills, but sometimes I paint little watercolors for myself and I have fun even though they look awful, and that's the entire point.

Also also, since I can't draw and I still want to share my ideas, I write. And yeah it takes practice but THATS THE POINT. There's so many genuine ways you can share your ideas with the world.

Hell, model with clay, act out a dumb video, draw stick figures, do whatever. I promise all of that is a better rendition than a program that isn't actually intelligent and is just giving you results based on keywords like a glorified search engine

Just say you want recognition for something you stole and didn't care enough to put the effort in and shut up

Okay! So here's the cover in question

Honestly I love this and I was really proud of how it turned out.

Alright! so the idea for this was that it's simply an image of Jude: finally free!

Here he is backpacking in Thailand which he hasn't done yet as of the date of this post, but Lucky Girl readers will know that he eventually Does Do That.

You can tell by his hair here too that he's older. He has this haircut when he reunites with Evie briefly in 2012, so I imagine this trip took place sometime around summer-autumn 2011.

To be honest the whole purpose of Lucky Boy was as sort of an extension of the original story for Lucky Girl readers who wanted more in-depth detail about Jude's life, more than what he ever had the time to tell Evie during her portion of the story, so for that reason the story is filled with little hints of what we know will happen, as well as nods to specific things about him that some have already learned - Like, how the story opens with him getting both ears pierced. The fact that he was a boy with two (and eventually 3) piercings was something that Evie found particularly cute and unique about him, and it's something he references in jest from time to time. ("haven't you seen my cute little earrings?")

Anyway, Thailand is where he gets that rather meaningless forearm tattoo, but it's also a place where he spends a lot of time alone. He does travel with a friend, but said friend is holed up with food poisoning for a significant chunk of the trip, which makes me quite certain that Jude spent a lot of time doing a lot of thinking. I'll explore this more in the actual story when I get there, but it's worth pointing out that when Evie meets him after this trip she notices a certain calmness in him, and like he's lost a lot of the boyish energy ("I realise I am looking at a man"). I feel like this trip is somewhat responsible for that.

He's also, clearly, facing away from the camera, which is probably self explanatory. In the chapter with Jen's birthday, as they take the train to the aquarium in Bray he waxes lyrical (as usual, yawn!) about his preference to sit facing the engine, never looking back. It's the same in this image. He is always moving forward.

YET - that is his school bag. (It is the wrong colour, yes, i didn't have the recoloured version when i made this poster lmao) so there's a sense that he's still in some way tied to childhood, to the things that are unresolved. Lucky Girl readers already know what (and who) those things are but I'll develop all that further from my controllers seat here inside Jude's brain.

Also - the toy attached to it represents Ivy. It's never explicitly stated in the story, but I think it's probably not in his character to have something like that on his bag unless it was gifted from someone important. So, he's carrying her with him too on his travels.

Now, for the artistic stuff (eek!)

I chose this pinky purple as the base colour by messing around with some hard light blending and the colour balance adj. because it creates that kinda fantasy feeling, like wonder and/or enlightenment is ahead, which hopefully for our dumb boy, it is. Purple is also often used in graphic design to indicate creativity, which is apt, seeing as he's an artist and all that.

I slapped in some sun in the corner ala 3 year old child's drawing, and added the text in yellow for no reason other than it's a complementary colour, and it picks up some of the yellows in the image.

Then added a text gradient to blend it in better and a little drop shadow effect

And finally some grain, paper texture and rounded corners because I wanted it to feel tangible, that sweet, nostalgic 35mm camera effect, or like a postcard.

New Year Thoughts (24-25)

The only accurate way to describe this year, is 366 days of non-stop change. Expected or unexpected, something new was formed, created, or or occurred each day.

Very little breaks or space to breathe, one event after the other, again, and again, and again. This was not a year of rest, 2024.

You were always in the back of my mind. Like a child in December, with Christmas constantly creeping into their thoughts. Holding to hope so tightly in their tiny fists, and letting it all come and go as the holiday passes.

There’s always joy with Christmas, of course. But waking up the next morning comes with a sort of empty disappointment. All that could have been the magic of Christmas, was. The hope has diminished, and next year is now forever away.

All what could have been 2024, was. The hope has diminished- but I don’t feel as empty this year as I have other December 31st’s. Yes next year is forever away but I am not anxious to reach it from where I am.

I needed this year. I needed forceful change, a reason to become the person I’ve wanted to be, and come to the conclusion I am strong and able to persevere on my own.

I have never been without the routine of school, friendships and constant people. Support, reassurance, taking on my self-casted therapist friend role and blending into the background to avoid bothering the rest of this busy world.

What an exercise it was, letting all of that become stripped from me this past year with the nature of time and growth- as well as my own choice.

My hair reached my shoulders as my confidence and willingness expanded as well. 2024 was going to change me no matter what I did- so I might as well control what I can to change with it.

In this current moment where my thoughts are jumbled and self-hate is high, I forget how far I’ve come. I don’t dread the new year anymore, I enjoy grieving what will never be again and reflecting on every new step I made to become who I am now. I have a beating heart, for a start. I did so much more than I ever thought I could.

I stage managed a show, I read an original poem in front of my entire senior class, I turned eighteen, I graduated high school, I won awards in my school art show and literary fest, I broke up with a long-term partner, I discovered my dad had cancer, I published a poetry book, I received two spinal surgeries, I met my current boyfriend and best friend, I grew into my own confidence, style, and creativity- I took action, I tried things, I broke sometimes and got back up again on my own-

I did so many “impossible” tasks this year and more. This is only the beginning.

2024 is not a year of endings, it is a year of beginnings. A year of change, transitions, milestones to begin a new era of life.

There is a bitter sweetness to it. As I reflect on my kindergarten school ID with the words “class of 2024” before I could read or had any concept of how years worked. “2024 is forever away,” almost as if it wasn’t tangible or real for my childhood self, nowhere I could see myself being. 2024 felt like a fantasy, a dystopian dream, something to worry about in the future, light years down the line from kindergarten.

Here I am. A legal adult, alive and breathing, years away from kindergarten with the ability to read and draw better than 5 year old me could ever comprehend. She would like me, she would think I am so cool, and proud of me for drawing, writing and loving what I love just like she always wanted for me.

2024 never felt real for her, it barely feels real for me now, yet here it is, coming to an end. A lost kindergarten ID, a graduation cap behind me, fulfilling my childhood dream of growing in confidence which happens to be mine now as well.

I have a tendency to self depreciate, but I think I will choose this moment to thank myself, for all I’ve tried and accomplished. There are times when credit is due, and I’m claiming this to be one of those times.

I’ve grown so much, I’ve changed, I’ve succeeded, yet this is far from the end.

If you are reading this, you’ve grown so much, you’ve changed, you’ve succeeded and this is far, far from your ending. Thank you so much for being here. For staying. For surviving this eventful year of change and letting your heart remain beating long enough to see the beginning of what this next year could be.

I had hopes, expectations, ideals for 2024. Some came true, some did not, some I forgot about. 2025 is a blank slate. All I know for certain is I am going to stay here through it, embrace every event and step out of my comfort zone just a little more. So maybe I can look back one year from now and thank myself again. If not for growing, then simply surviving. Being. Staying.

Thank you 2024, for all I hoped you would be, all you were and all you weren’t.

And thank you, each one of you, for surviving, being, staying through it all. <3 I’m so proud of you, and I hope we remain in touch through whatever 2025 may bring for each of us.

I'm a former fanfic writer under the username ElZacharie on FF.net and AO3, as well as a poet, with some older poetry on deviantart under the name victimofscience. My much older work from the beginning of my poetry career, under the name xHigherxNowx, was deleted and lost more than a decade ago. I hope to one day write something substantial enough to be published, or at least have my poetry catch the eyes of others on the internet. You can find my newer stuff under #my poetry and #my writing. I'm also a huge fan of creating backstories for characters and worldbuilding, mostly because I suck at sticking to long projects.

Speaking of long projects, I plan to slowly teach myself to draw with a tablet and to play guitar, two of my lifelong dreams. I also want to learn to sew, but I'm too scared of fucking up, among other more tangible reasons like space, so that's never happening.

This is the only time I will accept "AI has no soul" as valid argument when it comes to AI replacing leisure time. In fact, my main issue with the "AI replaces everything" hype is partly because it's inflated, partly beccause it's more indicative of demanded productivity output in the market than results that are actually of tangible use. In that sense I think AI just reveals just how audience have grown used to understand any media as consumption. Dissaffected-just-for-pay artworks existed long before AI, so is creating content for attention on social media. Anyhow, when it comes to AI and hobbies like people text generating fanfics, or midjourneying their waifu in 50 variations in bikinis and solacious poses, I speculate it's more indicative of social media having condtioned many users into taking away the privacy of hobbies. There is already a lot of monetisation of hobbies going on with videos, paterons, commissions - which isn't a moral failing by any means, not few people are in need of an extra income. But then thre is also how polished fanworks or results from hobbies are supposed to look. Extra filters on social media websites or preperaed in lightroom just for presentation.

Like, someone drawing Naruto becuase they like the character, or photograph a self-made elephant shaped plant pot shouldn't be downed by a few notes and no reaction when posted... but that's how things on social media currently are, in fact are set up to be. When the hobby activity is surpassed by the desire of attetion and engagement, that's where the hobby erodes from enjoyment to utility. This is were I do sense AI generated works finding a place in fandom and creative outlets in social media because with just a few tweaks, they can present a shiny, polished to gleam post that will draw in attention. With AI image generation, learning how to tweak prompts more precisely, it's easier for the untrained user to spot a fake image.

My point is: Your hobby should, as in the posts above, be a about the process, engaging with one's creative output. The activity of doing is more important. I've so many pages in my sketchbook I've not scanend/photographed although I'm really proud of them - because I did certain studies or full images for myself (and the internet is run by too many private actors who have hyprocritical ideological priorities... so yeah I'm not going to censor any tiddies I painstakingly anatomy studied to get right.) By times I doodle a lot of pages full and throw them into the trash because I needed to decompress. The most creative output were cubes floating around perspective grids. Nothing to be presentable but something that I felt like excerising. Again, I think AI just amplifies issues that were there before. Instead of worrying what 508th Sailor Moon redraw will draw in a crowd, focus on what you really want to draw. Spend entire months if not years uploading anything because you did nothing but study the luminscence of duck feathers with oil pastels. Maybe the most you share of your hobby is a picture of a knitting project gone wrong, and asking a forum who's interfaced hasn't been updated since 2003 what went wrong. Make hobbies private again. Don't care abou the flashy endresult, most of them are painstakingly put into scene and dipped in filters anyway. Care more about the act of doing than worry about possible presentation.

Unpopular opinion but if you don't enjoy the process you should find a different thing to do.

And I think this is true in general but now I'm talking about it in the context of AI.

If you don't enjoy making art and only care about the end piece and how it'll look and how much traction it"lol get online then making art is not something for you, find something you enjoy from start to finish.

Same goes for writing: if you do not enjoy writing and rewriting and then some more and instead want AI to write for you, being a writer is not something you should pursue.

Sure, not every part of creative process is going to be equally enjoyable but you should get satisfaction from solving the problems along the way and you should get a sense of accomplishment on your way of "making the piece yours" and you should have a sense of ownership once you are done.

None of these things will come from typing in a prompt into chatGPT. And I am sad to see so many people are missing on the opportunity to experience the joy of making something with their own hands and brains.

Chapter 2 - Fixed Occurrences

After a few seconds of hearing nothing but her own heartbeat, loud and fast in her ears, Unseen Thirteen realized that the room was too still. Even an empty, closed off room has some type of energy to it, and one containing a magical artifact as powerful as the Veil should be thrumming with magic.

“Stagnant Vibration.” She whispered to herself. “I’m caught between timelines.”

“Indeed.” A deep, awfully disappointed voice confirmed behind her, making the witch jump and point her wand at the source.

“Boss?” She asked, unsure. Unseen One should not be in this decade or country, but that voice sounded just like his. He was dressed in light colors, linen from what she could tell from a distance, it was a good contrast against his deep, dark skin and a nearly perfect match to his long, silvery locs of hair that fell down to his elbows. Thirteen couldn’t say for sure if that was Unseen One as she had never seen him out of uniform; it did not bode well to see him without his usual face altering hood.

“Not anymore, Miss Li.” He gave her a sad smile, his dark eyes were upset and proud in equal amounts. “You broke the rules, my dear. The usual punishment would be a walk through the Veil with nothing to help you find your way, but since you used the Veil itself to break the rules, and I’m not personally inclined to drive you insane, I think an alternative will be required.”

“Wh-which rules did I break? We are allowed to invent using any type of mag-” She tried defending herself with words alone, her wand arm flopping uselessly beside her, but Unseen One held out one hand to stop her rambling.

“Bringing Sirius Black back through the Veil changed a fixed occurrence, causing a parallel timeline to form, but your worst offense was not something you could help as you had no way of knowing that Mr. Black has a direct link to your Anchor.” He said. “If it had been anyone else, we could just destroy this timeline and have you suspended for a cycle or two. If you had used a time-turner instead of your office’s time controls, you wouldn’t have created a parallel timeline from inside the Unseen Offices, nearly making the whole pocket dimension implode. If he had died before crossing the Veil, your use of Necromancy would not have worked as his soul would not have been allowed entrance into our offices, and you would simply have disposed of his body as you should have.���

“That’s a lot of ifs, sir.” She grumbled unhappily, like a scolded child wanting to get a word in.

Unseen One chuckled, smiling brightly at her with fondness in his eyes. “You used Necromancy and Unseen Artifacts to meddle in your life from before and caused a parallel timeline to form by changing a fixed occurrence, that is as bad of an offence as you could have possibly committed, but if my explanation bothers you, dear, I can always erase you from existence and be on my way.”

“You wouldn’t, though!” She exclaimed confidently. “You won’t.” She added a bit sheepishly.

“I won’t. You remind me too much of someone from my life before, and that is the reason for the rules involving such matters. Emotions make us weak, Miss Li, but they also make us strong enough to deal with the consequences of our failings.” He walked closer, extending a hand towards her. “It was a pleasure and an honor to work with someone with a mind as annoyingly stubborn and bright as yours.”

Thirteen, no, Li took the offered hand on reflex, her confusion nearly tangible in the air.

“That’s it? I’m fired?” She asked.

Unseen One took her hand in both of his before replying. “You are no longer a part of the Unseen Forces, but as I am too much of a sentimental old man, I will ensure your memory won’t be tainted with something as mundane as being fired from a job like some common Ministry worker.” He said with a sneer as if being common was the worst thing someone could be. “I can’t tell you much about your life from before, as I am not privy to many details, but I know your name is Daiyu Li, you were born on the 10th of July, 1961. You were the Ravenclaw seeker for all six years you were allowed to… and your Anchor was a man named Regulus Black, who unfortunately passed away a bit over a month after you became Unseen.”

“Taking their ages into account and knowing all his first cousins are women, I’m guessing he was Sirius Black’s brother?” She asked, and One nodded in confirmation. “What should I do, sir? If he’s dead, who do I look for?”

“You look for Sirius, of course.” He let go of her hand with a gentle pat.

“So it worked? He’s alive?!”

“Yes…” The man sighed. “But not in the way you expect him to be, he will have no memory of what happened in your office, but he will still be bound to you because of your… necrochain? Leash of The Dead?”

“Gods, you’re as bad at naming things as he is.” She whispered with a grimace.

“Regardless of the name, your invention worked a bit differently than you expected. Rather than temporarily binding the soul to its original body while you conversed with it, it bound his soul to yours. Permanently.” Unseen One said in a tone so calm that Daiyu wondered if it was some kind of compulsion to keep her from freaking out.

“How do you even know what it was supposed to do, and what it supposedly did instead?” She questioned with a frown. “You weren’t in the office while I created it or used it. Now that I stop to think about it, how did you even find me here?”

“I created the pocket dimension where the Unseen Offices are located, nothing happens in it without my knowledge.” He answered with a knowing smile. 

“That’s… creepy, and sounds like a HR nightmare.” She said, thinking of all the times she had discussed Unseen One with her coworkers with a shiver. “Sounds like something you should inform us upon hiring.”

“Well, you don’t have to worry about it any longer.” He waved a dismissive hand. “You took the news of an unwanted soul bond rather well, Miss Li.”

“Oh, no. I didn’t, but I will save my tears and despair for later, I have a lot to deal with before then.” She sighed. “Do you have any idea where I can find Sirius Black?”

“None at all, his hiding place was not something I ever cared to find out, but you have plenty of time to find him before the day he was supposed to die here.”

“A day is hardly plenty of time!” She complained with a whine. Thirteen had always been awfully childish around One, something that her coworkers teased her for constantly, but that did not seem to bother the always friendly boss of the Unseen Forces.

“You have nearly a year, Miss Li.” He said with an eyeroll that did not match the smile on his face. “Have I ever sent you on a mission that you did not have the chance to accomplish?”

“No, sir.” She answered. “You always take care of your own.”

“That I do, and while you are no longer my employee, you are still one of mine. That won’t change, even if this is the last time we will ever see each other.” He said, the sad smile back on his face.

“Wha- why?!”

“Once I leave through the Veil, I will be closing it behind me, Miss Li- Daiyu, I can’t allow our original timeline to be tainted, you have a chance to make this one better than it would have been without you. There will be no Unseen Forces in this timeline once I am gone, the only remaining connection to us will exist through your memories, and your anchor”

It felt weird to hear her name out loud. It felt familiar, of course, but it also felt like it did not belong to her any longer. She spent 17 years in the Unseen Forces, nearly half of her entire life.

“Can I stop Lord Voldemort from returning?” She asked quietly, even if Daiyu did not remember her life from before, she remembered the fear from the year and a half she lived through the war as Unseen Thirteen.

“I’m afraid not even I am able to change that fixed occurrence.
