tuesday again 5/20/2025
in this week’s lesbian romance, she saves her love interest from a BEAR which is the buchest thing i can possibly imagine, aside from like. maybe historical calvary reenactment?
listening
American Psycho by Double Standard. this is a fairly standard indie rock girl group single but it shouts out the iliac crest which i have NEVER seen mentioned outside of fic. not even at the literal doctor’s office!
-
reading
this week we have Whitewater Rendezvous: Danger, Destiny, and Romance on the River, the third book by Kim Baldwin, who wrote two very respectable thrillers we read earlier this year. 2006, Bold Strokes Books, 233p, normal glossy cover perfect bound paperback.

Danger, destiny, and romance on the river.A wilderness kayak adventure brings together two very different women—Chaz Herrick, a laid-back outdoorswoman, and Megan Maxwell, a workaholic news executive. As they battle the challenges of nature for survival, they discover that true love may be nothing at all like they imagined.

very interesting little foreword: not surprising she’s branching out from thrillers a little bit bc all her authors bios are basically “i like living in michigan with my wife and being outside :)” and she was a journalist for 20 years before semi-retiring to write so the TV news exec aspect of one of the love interests is kind of fun. the girls’ friend group (Broads in Broadcasting) that drags love interest Megan out to Alaska to go kayaking feels like a real life club the author is in lol
had a chat with my bestie about love interest names in romance novels and we would love to have a chat with ms baldwin about her continued use of traditionally male names for her lesbian novels. i would really love to know if any of her love interests would be transmasc if she were writing them today. i understand that trans masculinity and butch culture are sort of blurry in places and more of a continuum, and im very curious if a transmasc love interest was just like. not economically viable as a novel? or if the state of the discourse wasn’t where it would need to be for that to be published by a lesbian press in 2006? many questions.
im hesitant to call this the girls adventure counterpart to the boys adventure books: i feel like traditional early 20th century pulp boys adventure generally has an element of unsanctioned political operation about it? there is no scheme to thwart here really. nobody is a staunch citizen soldier patriot on vacation. it is simply a normal vacation and a nice little travelogue/outdoorswoman novel.
i did like the emotional development here: there was a genuine barrier to them getting together in the beginning, and there was a genuine feeling to slowly beginning to trust each other beyond a professional client-guide partnership where it would look back if someone was killed on this fun trip. this one felt more, i want to say fanficcy? than most of the lesbian romances ive read. but that’s not quite what i mean when i say they both get put into Situations. there are a limited number of tents. there is a bear. there is a head injury necessitating Megan needs to get gently held and secured by Chaz as they raft to a helicopter extraction point to medevac her out of the Alaskan wilderness. i think baldwin was having a little trouble doing something that wasn’t a thriller and getting them to the next point, but this is a fairly picky nitpick compared to the absolute dreck we’ve been wading through where sometimes not even correct formatting is guaranteed!
it does the misunderstanding bc of a kiss thing (annoying) and then solves it early in the next chapter (annoying bc a nosy coworker breaks this news. Refreshing that it’s not the misunderstanding on which the plot hinges and doesn’t actually solve anything. bc both of them are so emotionally constipated that even this vulnerability is not the breakthrough). it is of course a happy ending romance, and has a very neat solution to the long-distance problem of one person having to give up everything she loves about life to be with the other person. there’s also a very funny (for 2025) discussion about 2006 webcams.
sex scenes are fine. nothing truly awful, nothing truly outstanding. i think this is better geared towards someone with normal hips and joints who really really loves scissoring. there is a truly wild scene where Megan gets VERY pushy and eventually backs off that i don’t think ive ever seen in another romance, gay or straight.

-
watching
apparently i have gone basically my entire life conflating the mission impossible and bourne series bc last thursday i put on the first mission impossible (1996) movie fully expecting the first bourne movie. i had never seen this fucking thing. i had a lot of thoughts about how the plot seemed stapled together in order to get you to the next stunt, and then read the wiki page and discovered that was in fact how they wrote and made the fucking movie. cruise’s preferred way to make a movie???? insane.
i have seen topkapi (where mission impossible gets its guy on a wire vertical heist scene from, down to nearly setting off the floor sensors) but it was wild to watch MI and realize that’s what all modern heist movies are copying.
-
playing
fallow week. nothing interesting to report in genshin
-
making
i have had three different paint by numbers at 95% completion in my dining room table for months bc i wasn’t quite happy with any of them. so i turned this one into new vegas fanart through the time honored method of “tracing the logo by using a tablet as a lightbox and then transferring the outline by going over it real hard with a pencil”. i would like to think it does look very in-universe, like someone clearly found some pre-war signage and sold it to gomorrah who slapped their logo on top. it will live next to my nuka cola cap sign in my home office.

I always love more variety in my game, and I love the conversion of The Sims careers to The Sims 2 by LientebollemeiS2I. I wanted to make them more integrated though, so with the permission of LientebollemeiS2I, here are my amendment's to these careers to include:
Chance cards (for every level)
Different career levels (since some of the levels match other careers)
Connection to University Majors
LifeTime wants! The only things they don't have are specific career rewards and Wants that will roll in the Wants and Fears panel.
Please see below for a list of the career levels (the first three levels are matched for Teen/Elder) and also links if you need information such as job descriptions, wages, work days and skill requirements:
Animal Care (https://sims.fandom.com/wiki/Animal_care)
SimFileShare or MediaFire

There are four files per career (eg. AdultCareer_AnimalCare, AdultCareer_AnimalCare_Conditions, AdultCareer_AnimalCare_LTW and TeenElderCareer_AnimalCare).
All four files are required and can just be put straight into your downloads folder.
You will notice some of the above career levels do not match the original careers. Some of the levels are already represented in other careers in the game, so I decided to swap some around and include some new jobs.
These files have new GUID numbers, so they should not conflict with other downloads, even the original versions of these careers.
The Lifetime Wants are also compatible with @lamare-sims 50 New Lifetime Wants for Sims 2: https://modthesims.info/download.php?t=669675
I'd like to thank the following members of our community for their assistance in these updates:
@sims2idea-lientebollemeis2i for creating the converted careers to begin with and providing their permission to share my amendments. Their original careers can be found here: https://s2idownloads.blogspot.com/search/label/SFS%20-%201t2%20Maxis%27%20Careers

@sharlasims for her assistance and support with creating the chance cards.
@teaaddictyt For her Photoshop skills and support with converting the career icons.
@episims for their assistance troubleshooting the career outfits.
@rio-sims & @palominocorn for creating a tutorial on how to create Lifetime Wants.
I hope you enjoy my version of these careers and please do not hesitate to contact me if you run into any trouble. 06/07/2023 - EDIT: Thank you to @lamare-sims who found some errors in the files. I have fixed the LTW and Conditions files to reflect some correct instance numbers and I have reuploaded the zip files to include up the amended files. Please replace these two files for each career if you have already downloaded it. 05/08/2023 - UPDATE: @bothersomecryptid has touched up the icons and been kind enough to share them! They made them with to work better with the Clean UI. You just need to replace the images in the career file through SimPE. You can download at this link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1q5j3AniepLh_lE_kgWgOYOkZkq9EzHNJ/view 03/09/2023 - EDIT: Thank you to @equinoxts2 and @lamare-sims for their further edits to the conditions files. I have reuploaded all files as new links, so feel free to replace the ones in your game. Children should no longer roll LTW's and you shouldn't get any errors when choosing these LTW's. 06/09/2023 - @venomander has been kind enough to create alternative icons for the careers. You can download them at these links: MediaFile 1

A writer’s guide to forests: traveling through the woods
Getting from point A to point B is something that both people in real life and the characters of your story will have to figure out. Whether as a means to get to a plot point, or as a part of the plot itself, travel presents opportunities for the writer.
Hack ‘n slash- Where paths are nonexistent, your characters will literally have to blaze a trail (the ‘blaze’ in this case has nothing to do with fire. Instead it is a trail marker made by carving a mark into a tree. The mark resembles the white patch seen on the forehead of mammals, most often horses.) Being the pioneer is slow going, especially if the undergrowth is thick and requires clearing. Cut bamboo can go through the foot, poison oak and poison ivy can give a nasty rash, and biting insects can make life miserable. And then there is the matter of marking the trail. A character on the run will not want to advertise their location and will do their best to keep their trail hidden. But for others, they will want to mark the trail. Stone cairns, arrows, blaze marks in trees, and even sticks and knotted grass can point out the path to other travelers. This can be helpful to others, but it can also present a danger. Thieves and outlaws can create false trails that lead travelers into a trap or ambush.
Game trails- Animals have their habits. They like to take the same path between places. Over time these develop into trails that crisscross the forest floor. For a character on the run, or those who needs to make haste, these are a tempting choice to follow. But be careful. Some animals are able to traverse terrain too difficult for humans (narrow ledges, near vertical faces, and the gaps underneath fallen trees are not fun places to be). And your characters may encounter more than deer or rabbits. Predator species hang out around game trails as they can be fruitful hunting grounds.
Existing paths and roads- Roads can range from simple dirt paths to paved highways. These will be the most direct routes between the principle settlements in your story. Prosperous areas will have well maintained roads with travelers and patrols using them frequently. Characters may also encounter watchtowers, farms, and inns along the way. Poorer regions, those affected by war, or more remote regions will have less well maintained roads, fewer travelers, and few to no amenities between towns. And if your characters can use the roads, expect hostile armies, outlaws, and highwaymen to use them as well. And where the roads go may be limited to the most populated regions, forcing your characters to leave the path if they want to get to isolated villages, caves, temples, or even a wizard’s tower.
Use the water- Of course, you can have your characters forgo land transportation and use the rivers, lakes, and seas. Rafts, ferry boats, and ocean going ships are all viable options. It should be noted that these are not perfect solutions. Rapids and waterfalls will force characters back onto land until they find gentler waters. Storms can delay or sink vessels, and cold winters will freeze water over. Of course, a frozen river or lake is just an excuse to get out the ice skates. Droughts will dry up streams and small lakes, and recent rains can turn placid waters into unsurvivable whitewater.
Up in the trees- Hate to burst your bubble here, but swinging from vines is something that only exists in fiction. If you try to do this in real life, it will not work out well…provided you can even find sufficient vines or fig roots. Of course, in your story, you are free to do what you want. Nothing is going to stop you…well except maybe for your readers and the critics who will pan you for using what may be considered an overused and unoriginal trope. Other options include bridges, cable cars, or even zip lines.
Taking flight- Of course, the forest will not pose an obstacle if your characters can simply fly. This can be achieved by characters that possess wings of some sort. They could have a winged mount, or they could hitch a ride on a vehicle like a helicopter or ultralight plane.
Underground- If in doubt, take a cue from moles and dwarves. Tunnels can serve the same function as roads, with all the benefits and drawbacks included. Of course your characters will also have to be aware that cave-ins are a real and present danger. These can be natural, or deliberate sabotage. And your characters best hope all the recent tunneling hasn’t awaken any ancient evils from long ago…

Tales from the Grid: The Meaning of Courage
(because they're their own channel with their own arcs)
Ever since the Activation linked together all the different eras of Hyrule, the Link and Zelda of the old DiC cartoon have wondered where their version of the Triforce of Courage might be. Now, they've found a possible lead... and so have the Syndicate.
Meanwhile, Mr. Crocker has finally completed Metal Timmy and decides to use the hunt for the Triforce as a field test.
Also meanwhile, Cookie's on a hunt of her own, following rumors of a dangerous and elusive Program with a familiar color scheme.
Hylian Road Trip
Link, Zelda and Spryte, accompanied by Anchor Link and his some of friends, Frida, Andi, Crabcake, Roll and Timmy, set out across Hyrule guided by ancient legends in search of the long-missing Triforce of Courage. Unfortunately, between the expected chaos of that many Anchors in one group and the discovery that Ganon and several other Syndicate members are following the same legends means it will most definitely not be smooth sailing.
Rise of Metal Timmy
Spryte and Lori are captured by a robotic duplicate of Timmy who has powerful magic and everybody has to fight him to get them back.
Rockin' and Rollin'
During their travels, the party finds a Goron mining facility that's been hijacked by Dr. Wily and Eggman.EXE to unearth an ancient temple that holds a clue to the location of the Triforce of Courage, and the Links and Roll lead the charge to free them.
Temple of Earth
The party explores the temple uncovered in the last episode while accompanied by the Goron Miners' boss, Foreman Bludo. After almost definitely doing some Desecration, getting a magic hammer, and beating a Talus, the end result is freeing a Great Fairy who declares Bludo the Sage of Earth and points them in the direction of Zora City in the heart of the Faron Marsh.
Gorhan's Wild Whitewater Rafting Adventure!
The quickest way from the Goron Mines to the Faron Marsh turns out to be a trip down a raging river. The good news is that said river is a popular destination for adrenalin junkies so there's a group of Gorons who make a living renting rafts and safety gear to tourists. The bad news is they've got an Inkling in the party. The worse news is they've got Syndicate members trying to sabotage their trip again.
The Spider and the Crawdad
In a moment she's been both longing for and dreading, Gohma finally meets Cookie face-to-face, which ends up going better for her than she ever dared hope. And as a bonus, she may have just found the Syndicate some powerful new allies.
Meanwhile, the party trudges through a marsh.
All Hail Crabcake!
When the party reach Zora City, they discover two things. The first is that it contains a mix of River and Ocean Zora, though noticeably more of the former than the latter. The second is that Plankton is running for mayor. And winning.
The party is split on how to handle this. One half decides to help the other candidate, a River Zora named Melia, with her campaign. The other half goes the chaotic route and submits Crabcake as a new candidate.
Temple of Sea
Another day another dungeon. This time they get a Hookshot and fight an Octorok that's enormous even by DiC world's standards. Melia is declared the Sage of Water and the party gets directed into the Ancient Woods further into the Faron Region, where they will find a sacred tree that can open the way to the Triforce.
They Weren't Lying, Those Woods Be Lost
Both the Party and the Syndicate run afoul of the Ancient Magics protecting the sacred tree. Timmy, Frida and the local Link discover that they have the ability to actually navigate the forest, but not before everybody else ends up separated and hopelessly lost.
Heart of Wood, Heart of Iron
The party finally reaches the deepest part of the woods and meet the Great Deku Tree, who has been waiting to meet Link and Zelda for a long, long time. Unfortunately, before he can help them, he needs some aid in return.
It turns out that the only members of the Syndicate that didn't get horribly lost are Crocker, Metal Timmy and Lokoko, who have been capturing the local fairies so Croker can study them. The Deku Tree is the guardian and home of the fairies of Faron Woods, but given that he's a magic tree there's really only so much he can do against a reality warping robot and a borderline demigoddess. Obviously everybody agrees to help.
Taking Flight
At the end of the last episode, the Great Deku Tree revealed that clearing the temples and awakening the Sages is the key to making the Triforce of Courage reveal itself, which is why the first Great Fairy couldn't just point them to the Tree directly. And as it turns out, the final Temple is high up in his branches.
And also fairy sized.
Yeah, he has to turn them into fairies (except the two that already are, of course) and have them travel through the Forest Fairy Kingdom inside him so they can reach it.
Having Link and Zelda finally be the same size as her is Doing Things to Spryte, lemme tell ya.
Meanwhile, the Syndicate and the Abyss's group formally meet, and Ganon gets some Ideas when he learns of the Dark Arms project.
Temple of Sky
Item is Wind Rod. Boss is a normal sized (and thus comparatively massive) Skulltula. Sage of Wind is Spryte. And at a point in the center of the three temples' locations, a tower rises.
(also there wasn't a Great Fairy in this one because she's the queen of the Forest Fairies instead of living in the temple.
Tower of the Gods
The party, now back to their original forms, book it to the tower in the hopes of reaching it before the Syndicate. They conquer the many puzzles and battles that await them.
...And then when they reach the top, Metal Timmy is waiting for them with the Triforce of Courage already in hand.
Power
The whole episode's a big game of keep-away with the Triforce piece, with Ganon flipping the board near the end by fusing with both his own Triforce of Power and a sample of Black Arms DNA to go from a generic evil wizard to a true embodiment of Power and Malice like all the other Ganons.
Wisdom
The episode where things go horribly wrong and it looks like the bad guys are going to win... at least until the Triforce of Wisdom, back at Hyrule Castle, suddenly shoots towards the battlefield in a beam of golden light and into Zelda.
Courage
...Yeah you see where this is going. Time for DiC Link to finally take his place among the Heroes of Hyrule.
Though unfortunately their Ganon does manage to live to lick his wounds and attempt conquest another day. Cartoon villain and all that.

Rapids Classification

How To Choose The Perfect Rapids For Your Skill Level
The International Scale of River Difficulty (ISRD) rates Class I through VI rapids. Class III rapids are suitable for intermediates with some experience in white water rafting.
To have a good time while whitewater rafting, you must choose rapids matching your skill level. This means understanding how rapid classes work and knowing what to expect at each level.
Advantage Grand Canyon are experts in this field. Our guide is here to help you navigate various classes of rapids and find a suitable adventure in the Grand Canyon.
Classes of Rapids: The International Scale of River Difficulty
For a rafter, each stretch of river represents varying levels of challenge depending on their skills and experience. However, knowing this system ensures they select waters proportionate to their ability and safety measures throughout the journey while making it enjoyable.
Class I Rapids (Beginner)
Beginners or those who have never experienced whitewater should start with class one rivers such as the Badger Creek Rapid in the Grand Canyon.
Due to their smoothness, these rapids are very gentle and can be manipulated by anyone, even without basic skills. Hence, they offer great opportunities to appreciate scenic beauty without encountering difficulties like capsizing.
Class II Rapids (Novice)
Class II rapids might require more maneuverability but are still mild enough for novices and families looking for easy thrills. With just simple rafting skills and wearing life jackets alone, one may quickly navigate through them since they only involve minor splashing, which makes one feel less crowded. Thus, they are ideal places for kids accompanied by families.
Temperatures can be controlled during early spring or summer when sea levels rise. House Rock Rapid is one of the top Class II rapids with small waves and minor obstacles, providing more excitement while still being accessible for less experienced rafters.
Class III Rapids (Intermediate)
Class III Rapids offer moderate waves requiring maneuvering through narrow passages during Dead River trips, where helmets must be worn due to some moderately steep drops and small waves that demand teamwork and quick thinking, leading to fun challenges.
The turbulent drops of the Dead River and the dynamic current in Kennebec’s Penobscot River, which can be described as the fast river flow of Class III rapids, still offer its riders quite a challenge. More physical strength and thrilling emotions can be achieved when you choose rafting trips in adventure sports where people are involved in rafts and pass through different rapid river turns.
If you want to have a lot of fun and be tired while rowing on Class III rapids, then this is what you need. Select the right difficulty level for yourself, take all necessary measures before starting your journey, and rest assured that it will be one excellent whitewater rafting experience.
Hance Rapid is another great intermediate rapid with chaotic waves and tight spaces. It provides a moderate test requiring adept maneuvering skills; intermediate paddlers looking for excitement should consider Granite Rapid.
Class IV Rapids (Advanced)
Class IV rapids are suitable for advanced and intermediate rafters. The river has high power but predictability regarding wave sizes, thus demanding more accurate boat handling techniques than any other category. Large yet unproven waves require narrow passes, so quick moves must be made by experienced guides who can recognize them easily. Otherwise, damages may occur since rescue becomes extremely difficult due to the conditions presented here.
For intermediate rafters, these advanced rapids are exciting because they push their abilities without being too dangerous like expert-level rapids would do; strong currents coupled with powerful waves occasionally dropping down call for confident spokesmanship as well precise steering ability from behind paddles that, even though not extreme compared with class five require good familiarity with white-water courses together fast reflexes if one wants negotiate safely through complex choppy sections which characterize these parts most liked by those having some knowledge about this sport but not enough experience.
Lava Falls and Hermit Rapid in the Grand Canyon provide perfect challenges for skilled kayakers who enjoy steep gradients combined with large waves and turbulence.
Class V Rapids (Expert)
Class V rapids are long, violent, known as challenging rapids, and have hard-to-maneuver features. They represent the ultimate challenge in whitewater rafting. Highly turbulent waters, large and irregular waves, powerful and unpredictable currents, and steep drops over rocks are just a few characteristics that make Class V rapids so dangerous.
To paddle through Class V rapids, one needs to be skilled at paddling, have quick reflexes, and be able to make decisions under pressure. Only those experienced enough should attempt paddling through them because they can easily get injured or their boat may capsize if they do not wear the right gear to protect against such risks.
This is why we at Advantage Grand Canyon recommend only trained experts to undertake this activity, as it requires more demanding fitness levels along longer routes than any other category does; however, most people prefer taking up courses where necessary skills like appropriate equipment knowledge as well rescue techniques would greatly help ensure safety while attempting various challenging parts found within higher sections meant for expert-level rafters.
Crystal Rapid is one of the most complex and dangerous rapids on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park. It is a class five rapid, which means that you must have advanced paddling skills to navigate down this section successfully. Otherwise, things might turn out differently from what had been planned since several huge waves could quickly sweep away even an experienced rafter like yourself.
Class VI Rapids (Extreme)
Whitewater rapids are classified from class I to class VI. Class VI rapids are the most complex and dangerous rapids to be attempted in a raft. They are considered almost impossible to navigate because they are unpredictable and have many hazards.
These kinds of rapids have big and standing waves created by powerful currents and often steep drops – sometimes over rocks or other obstacles like undercurrents which may flip rafts or suck them underwater for long periods. Rafters need extensive experience before attempting this level; depending on the conditions, it may still be too risky.
In rapid classification, classifying one as class six means it is highly hazardous and usually does not run during normal circumstances, requiring extraordinary expertise, precise steering, and carefulness. Most experts agree that professionals who have mastered all aspects of river running safety skills should only attempt anything higher than Class V, including rescue techniques.
Choosing The Right Whitewater Rafting Adventure
Several considerations besides whitewater classification should be made before selecting a whitewater rafting adventure to ensure your safety and enjoyment throughout the rafting trip. First, evaluate your experience level; beginners should start on manageable sections with gentle currents where they can learn basic paddling strokes without much risk.
Class I and II rapids provide an environment suitable for families with young children or people who wish to relax while being introduced to this sport. Secondarily, if you are looking forward to more thrilling experiences, go for those rivers with moderate complexity levels, such as III, which require advanced skills like reading water correctly, among others.
If you’re an intermediate rafter interested in testing yourself against serious rapids, then Class IV should be right up your alley. Such rivers demand strong paddle work combined with fast reflexes since you will encounter turbulent stretches where navigation becomes tricky due to numerous obstacles like holes and rocks.
Honesty is vital when choosing the appropriate rafting trip for yourself or your group.
Grade IV represents a substantial step up from many different classes in terms of difficulty, so one should have adequate skills before attempting such sections. If you are unsure about your capability, go for less challenging whitewater that matches your abilities. Otherwise, there might arise a need for rescue operations, which could put others at risk, too.
Location and scenery are other critical factors in choosing the proper whitewater rafting adventure. For example, different rivers offer landscapes ranging from lush forests to scenic canyons or even rugged mountains; therefore, researching different destinations will help you find a place that satisfies the desire for natural beauty and the thrill-seeking spirit within.
Final Words
In conclusion, choosing the proper whitewater rafting adventure involves carefully assessing your skill level, desired location, river trip length, and needed guidance. Considering these factors and the rapid classification from above, you can select a rafting experience that matches your abilities and preferences, ensuring a thrilling and safe adventure on the water.

dude i got so much knowledge of a lotta aspects of, like, everything that I should totally start offering my services as a fanfiction writing consultant or some shit
Seriously between being a terminal Car Guy™ who's been wrenching since I was old enough to understand "righty tighty lefty loosey" and driving touge since I was old enough to reach the pedals since I lived on the mountain (and driving dirt kart almost as long as I've been doing competitive rifle shooting, both in 3rd grade for the record) along with having borderline encyclopedic knowledge of Initial D canon and actually-encyclopedic knowledge of all the gay shit, I think I am qualified to consult on this stuff
Seriously there's glaring errors that I have to mentally edit out in LITERALLY EVERY FANFIC I READ and if I charged, like, $5-10 for a basic edit/preread I could definitely afford my drinking habit slightly better, just to do something I'm gonna do anyway. I just wish my real name wasn't on my Paypal account...
Also I'm a licensed whitewater rafting guide in the state of North Carolina (I do not live in North Carolina), a classically-trained but non-practicing blacksmith, have about 50% of an engineering degree, I'm forklift certified, more knowledgeable about respirators and first aid than the people doing the trainings at work last week, know more than anyone in my company except Bruce the Engineer about what we actually make, and I'm an actual IRL eunuch but I don't think those are applicable to most circumstances, but in case they are, I'm ready
I still ain't found the main quest of life yet but I've done the most random-ass hodgepodge of sidequests you will ever fuckin see so if you need to Know Something it's kind of a coin toss as to whether I got knowledge on the subject

New River and Gauley River National Recreation Areas
Thursday, April 11, 2024
NOTE: this didn’t publish in April.
Of course it was raining when we woke up. Jeanne checked the weather report and decided to reserve the last campsite at Bayside at Assateague for Saturday and Sunday since there is no rain in the forecast.
Tim and Dora discovered that the ballfield parking lot was also a trailhead for connecting to the New River National Recreation Area trail system. They come back to the RV and drag Jeanne out once the rain stops. We hike along a gentle trail along the rim. We see glimpses of the gorge filled with fog. It smells like spring in the southern Appalachians. We see bluets in bloom along the trail. Jeanne remembers them as the first flowers she saw while hiking the Appalachian Trail in Georgia.

We drive back to the US 19, cross the bridge over the New River Gorge, and stop at the visitor center to take better photos. We pick up another magnet for the RV. We have been to many more parks, but only recently started collecting magnets.

We drive 40 minutes to the Gauley River.
The New River National Recreation Area and the Gauley River National Recreation Area are renowned for their whitewater including V+ rapids. The whitewater in these two rivers is legendary and is generally considered the best in the East south of Maine.

Jeanne first heard of the Gauley almost 40 years ago. It is spoken of with reverence by whitewater rafting guides further south. The senior guides are described as “S/he kayaked the Gauley” in tones of awe.
The Gauley whitewater starts here at the dam. In the fall, the lake waters behind the dam are drawn down to prepare for winter and spring melts. That is Gauley season for eastern whitewater enthusiasts.

We drive back up to the rim of the gorge and around to a Civil War Battlefield park with a nice hiking trail that isn’t too hard on aging knees.

We have several overlooks of the gorge.

Dora begins to bark and growl up ahead. Jeanne rushes forward to where Dora is confronting a snake, fortunately from a cautious distance. We put her back on leash and keep a closer eye on her. The next overlook is down an unknown length of stairs. Tim goes down to the switchback to reconnoiter, but doesn’t see an end. We decide to turn back. The snake is gone.

Back on the road, it starts raining again. At least we got two hikes in two national parks in between the rain. The weather looks good on the coast for the weekend, so we head for Maryland.
We stop at the Maryland rest area on I-68 near the WV border. The Youghiogheny Overlook rest area eastbound provides a sweeping view of the Youghiogheny River Valley. Don’t ask us how it is pronounced — we haven’t a clue.

An hour later, we pass Sideling Hill again. It’s raining. It’s our 3rd stop at Sideling Hill this trip and it’s been pouring every time. In fact, it’s been 13 days where it has rained at least once every day despite all our efforts to find clear weather. The eastbound side parking lot is far too slanted for comfortable sleeping. We decide to continue on to the Cracker Barrel in Cumberland.
