i realize this looks finished, but technically i'm still deciding whether to add a background or not lol. still, for the sake of sharing a proper WIP, here's a line or two from an araleyn brainworm WIP that i started reworking yesterday (mild tw for religious guilt and period-typical internalized homophobia from aragon's pov):

She remembers sharing her bed with Anne at Henry's behest, remembers the nights of tossing and turning and trying not to think about Anne asleep next to her-- remembers waking up to dark hair spilling across her pillow and the press of blood-warm bosoms against her own, softer than sin, as hot as the Devil, remembers lying still as death, mouthing prayers into the heat of Anne's neck like an act of penance.

Honestly I wonder if anyone’s ever read Chilchuck’s “I cheated on her” admission as an implicit reference to prioritizing alcohol over his marriage and feeling guilty abt it.

Ohh… "I cheated on her" as a half-truth because something ended up taking priority over their marriage, because emotionally he was elsewhere… "I cheated on her" because after having all the time in the world to think about it now that he’s alone, he realizes that that might have been how she felt, and that’s how it felt like to him too.

Love that. I def think he’s ironically someone who deflects guilt a lot, in a similar way that he compulsively goes "You’re wrong! I don’t care about you guys at all! I’m an asshole!" he flees emotions by making the problem something else that’s fake, a burden easier to bear, he’s so used to being seen for what he’s not after all. I went into it a bit in one of my fics and in a couple meta posts, but when it comes to his wife he was very much like an ostrich with his head in the sand, seeing her fall into a bad mood on the outing before she left him but dismissing it as something "sudden" that’s not worth thinking deeper about. Overdrinking is a problem for future Chil. I think he did a lot of "You want me to drink less and you’re afraid for my health? Get over it lol" and "I should be less strict with the girls and raise my voice less? My father was a strict drunk and look at me, I turned out functional and great! The girls are literally fine and love me" and "Oh? My drinking is affecting our family? No it’s not smh smh get off my back"< Drunk a significant portion of the time he spends at home since he’s off-work and somewhere he can relax. Type of guy to always dismiss any issues that might exists because he prefers ignoring them as if they’ll go away. All his problem solving energy is spent during work and the issue is with his family he already likes things as they are, they’re his comfort zone and change is scary, he doesn’t want the change, even if it’d be better. He doesn’t want to change, his unhealthy habits are guilty pleasures he wishes people didn’t try to make him feel guilty for

BUT POINT IS he struggles with guilt and like. Letting it be a feeling that he gets sometimes, so it’s all bottled up and festers and gets twisted into frustration or such like how his worry usually does. I like this take, wether it’s something he’s already thought a lot about or it’s something he’s repressed that came suddenly pouring out of him like blood out of a wound, now that he’s putting it into words with someone for maybe the first time.

It’s interesting how he didn’t refuse going up to the bicorn, I’m sure part of him wanted to see if it would like him, like the virtue test it is. Would a monster that loves despicable men be magnetized to him? Would it confirm his fears?

I kinda just draw what I want, I need to be invested in someones oc first and drawing other people's ocs makes me nervous about getting everything right (especially if it’s paid) so I tend to avoid it, but for canon characters I try to draw them if I can, I like reading any requests! (Even if I don’t draw them)

Also sorry I do have a bit of a artblock going on rn so that’s why I haven’t been drawing as much 😓

I have no idea if this will make sense or be accurate especially because I'm tired and I have 3 working brain cells right now lmao but something something countershading in aquatic life as a kind of metaphor in the COI au??

The fish are darker on top so fish above them can't see them from above (Leo hiding his pain with his jokes & stuff so his brothers, who are the fish swimming higher in this metaphor, can't see his true self)

I have no idea how this would work the other way, maybe something like Leo looks up to his brothers so much that he only sees the freedom of the sky and flying and not actually them?? Though I'm sure Leo doesn't ignore his brothers to focus on his dream of flying, I really have no idea for this part XD but it's kind of a fun thought to play with

I LOVE countershading in fish. That’s kinda what I was trying to do with Leo’s top design, where his back and neck are blue with wavey stripes so he’d blend in to the blue of the ocean down below, and his stripes are like. Reminiscent of light rippling through water?? I’m sure the yellow would just make him stand out but WHATEVER, ITS FICTION—

In other words, yes thank you I love this metaphor. Maybe if you think of the brothers as birds and keep the fish to just Leo, then you can say they can’t see him from above, he blends in with his surroundings, and they assume he’s okay. But if they were to say… idk, dive into the water, dive into HIS territory, his mind, and look at him from a different angle, one he usually hides, they’d see a side of him that only wants to be in the sky???

I haven't rewatched it yet (I started s1 recently I'll get there in due time, im watching chronologically) but DR. WORDGIRL-BRAINS AKA THE BRAIN SWAP EP.

ITS SOOOOO INTERESTING. It's basically confirmation that the damn squeaky brain is literally just apart of the body and not like inside inside him (which i kinda thought was the case tbh) and oh my god.... seeing two brains be completely chill and non-chalant like that was wild. He literally just went "Oh shit. I don't really want cheese because i dont have the mouse brain telling me what to do. The fuck do i do now." And he just goes and saves people and shit. He gets to be really oddly good for an entire episode. AND HE SEEMS TO LIKE IT??? Like i could swear up and down that if he kept being without the mouse brain he could be like a real good guy.

people will say clem should have died at the end of s4 like we didnt get the entire barn sequence. like clem didnt literally become lee in the end seeing his fate through her own eyes. like they didnt fake us out sooooo hard. like they didnt play take us back to hammer it home. the game ended on the pan out of the ericson gates and everything after that is the epilogue where things are Fine Actually and clem gets her happy ending. we got BOTH!!

like what you wanted her fate to be the same as lees? did you miss the themes throughout s4 of breaking the cycle?? did you miss aj feeling so helpless to a fate clem sees as inevitable? where all he wants is agency? where hes looking for another way?? he tells clem she wont always be able to tell him no and he was RIGHT!! he says NO to her death!! he makes his choice and SAVES HER!! she told him they couldnt be together in death and so he said then youll have to keep living!!!

and she does!!! she loses her leg but she gains a Home. a REAL ONE!! full of people who love her. where they get to choose their own paths and make their own future Together. and she finally gets some fucking Rest. a part of herself dies in that barn but a new part gets to emerge!! she gets to live a happy life surrounded by a loving community that she helps build!!! and you think she shouldve died 😐

I'm gonna probably make it easier on myself and talk about real foods, since I have absolutely no clue what kinds of foods would be eaten on Zeralith (the world for Fate's Game) 😅

Also wanting to talk about some Zelda OCs so first up!

Aria:

She absolutely adores fruits and sweets of any kinds! Trying different types of the two in different regions and cultures is a dream of hers, and she loves a good angel cake!

She's so glad she can still eat as a Blessed Stal, but doesn't have to worry about where it all goes. Its magic! It all just gets broken down and converted into more magic!

They also love a good bread! Flat bread, sourdough, just anything with a good soft toothsome feel!

Garlic bread is absolutely divine ✨️

As for what she makes for herself, since she no longer needs it to survive she'll kinda just treat herself on the rare occasion with berries or pastries. When she was alive, she'd try to at least make her meals nutritious and filling. She was never good at presentation, and her sister Morra is a bit better at whipping up amazing flavors (even if they appear dubious...), but Aria still makes decent meals! Anything to get the job done! And if it doesn't taste good, then she won't wanna eat it, so she tries to at least make things palpable or somewhat decent

This also applies to what they'll make others; though a fav of theirs is a strawberry angel food cake! (Or angel food cake with strawberries and strawberry sauce on top!)

Kana:

I was trying to think of who else I'd wanna talk about, and randomly got the idea that Kana would absolutely adore seafood. Raw (she's had at least 1 moment where she actually caught a fish in her mouth I just know it), cooked, made into a stew, etc. Just any and all things aquatic!

When she gets really in the zone about a project or other hyperfixation, she's awful at taking care of herself, which includes meals. So at times like that its stuff that's quick and easy to keep herself functioning. Premade sandwiches, just plain bread, a bowl of fruits or veggies, all if she's lucky/somewhat paying attention/prepared. Otherwise its likely junk foods like jerky or something else she can just grab and throw in her mouth

But when not distracted, her go-to is stuff that can be thrown in a pot and left to cook while she's busy. Lots of soups, pulled meats, or just anything that let's her be free to go do stuff. So she puts a lot into prep, then gets to just chuck it all in and be off

Her usual meal she likes making for others would be some sort of comfort food like Mac n cheese (or whatever equivalent there'd be on this world 😂) or a seafood stew or paella

Just loves having a hot bowl of something while relaxing with company

Mae:

Ok I was gonna try to pick another Zelda OC but Mae came to mind! She's actually wicked talented at cooking! Baking too, but cooking especially!

She adores food and has a lot of fun spending time putting meals together or prepping the kitchen.

I do feel like she'd love egg dishes, as well as anything with a good sauce!

While over the course of the story, she hasn't had much access to proper kitchens while on the run with the main group, but she refuses to let them all eat slop. Its gotta at least taste good!

Once she learns way later on in the story that there may be a way to imbue food with the Soul & spirit energy Eidal, Tilo, and soon Knell need in order to live, she dedicates herself to making sure it all works and tastes good, while also inventing new recipes once learning different energies give different tastes and feelings. It fascinates her!

Cooking for herself and her sister had been a part of her dream that she never thought she'd achieve (as well as writing a novel), I imagine she gets to do so by the end of the story! And she'd love to cook for people things they've never tried before and introduce them to new things!

I could see her making risottos, as well as various aquatic dishes for Kana!

Cadence (also goes by the name Nocturne to the general public; also Aria's Lorulian Counterpart!):

Food in Lorule is practically a precious commodity, what with half the Kingdom disappeared into chasms and rifts while everything goes to shit. So for a lot of their life growing up, they ate whatever they could forage or steal alongside their sister Minuet

Once they managed to get some sort of stability with a place to stay, they made sure that whatever meals they could make would taste as good as they could, and they're actually quite skilled at all manner of cooking! Baking is a little harder, but they can do some just fine

Once they became leader of the Theives Guild and started changing how things were done, food was a bit easier to pass around and secure

Often they're pretty busy managing missions and other projects and such, so in the secret base in the void they made, they made sure there was a kitchen and cooks to man it!

I'm imagining a time where they get a meal delivered and only goes to take a bite after the person who dropped it off left, only to immediately spit out whatever it was. So they get up and go to the kitchen, asking who the hell made this. They see that maybe some of the cooks couldn't make it in today, or are short staffed, so some of the other members tried to pitch in. A lot of them are nervous that the big scary boss is gonna eject them out into the void, but that's only cuz they don't know Cadence very well. They just chuckle and roll up their sleeves, showing the others how to make the dish they so spectacularly failed. All the while being quite casual and good humored, with a bit of teasing/ribbing on how badly they did but encouraging to keep practicing. They are fully aware that a lot of the people working under them are just villagers trying to get by and help out around the Kingdom, not expertly trained in cooking or serving

Cadence is only being the boss because someone had to, so that's what they did. Otherwise, all their members are their family, and they intend to take care of them as such

Depending on resources, I feel like shepherd's pie, hearty soups and stews, and just overall good filling meals making the best use of whatever they can get access to would be what they like and make!

Oh and buns! Lots of breads and buns that are easy to grab and go when working hard or off on missions across the kingdom

They'd love to share a big pot luck meal with the Troublesome Trio, Minuet, Nubia, and whoever else they care about. But even though Nubia has access to all manner of wealth and resources to make that happen, Cadence wants it to feel earned/natural. Not them stuffing their faces while there's people out there starving and barely getting by

Once the Kingdom gets a bit better, maybe.

(I imagine its still a bit of a process after the events of A Link Between Worlds before the lives of everyone can get to a place of stability and normalcy, but they're willing to work hard for it!)

This was tons of fun!! I never really thought about this stuff too much, but it's so good to flesh characters out!

Hongjoong also enjoys this quality- it balances him out. He’s more introverted, sometimes forced to be more serious.
