(second ask) also it is always So nice to meet a fellow med student in fandom <333 tho i know the pathways a little different outside of the US lol. may i ask how/where you broke into like, Real Craft in literature/writing? i always felt that as a stem kid i was mostly stumbling around blind in undergrad and now i barely have time to devote to reading Or writing :')

I'll happily accept any advice from you - I'm still in my first year and only graduated from high school/secondary school last July, so I'm very much still in deep water here 😅. Any tips on getting through it? (Also, any perspective on what med school is like in the US? I don't know much about it other than the nebulous concept of "premed" and am very intrigued!)

Honestly, I don't think I've broken into Real Craft yet in writing, which makes me somewhat underqualified to answer your question. At least not properly! Or maybe not in a satisfactory way; I've been writing since I was a kid and writing fanfic since I was like - 11, maybe? 12? And sometimes I don't even feel as if I've improved much since then. I think the only advice I can offer for finding that feeling of Real Craft (because when it does come through - in flashes - it is the most wonderful thing in the world, as you know) is to read A LOT more, and more importantly to start reading as a writer instead of as a reader. Dissect the writing, look at how your favourite authors construct sentences, etc etc etc. I always notice a sharp uptick in the quality of my writing after I devote real time towards studying the way an author evokes emotion and uses language. So that may work for you, although of course everyone is different T_T.

Also, I totally feel your struggles RE: not having enough time. Writing every day is a good way to combat this, even if it's just a hundred words. Writing is a skill like anything else and if you do it enough you can sharpen it into a habit!

I think this is just a trend everywhere but I've been very frustrated this week by how much admin work is being outsourced to me as the patient/customer.

My orthodontist tells me I can make an appointment with the surgeon. I call the surgeon. They tell me I need a new referral. I call the orthodontist. They do a referral. I call the surgeon. Referral didn't come through. They tell me about their special unique system we have to use. I call the ortho again and walk them through the referral. I call the surgeon. They say the referral was missing some details so they have to do it again. I call the ortho.

The insurance company calls me about repair shops. I give them the name of the repair shop which I already gave them yesterday. They say they're not in their system but I can use them, but I have to call the repair shop to ask them to contact the insurance company. I call the repair shop and they say the insurance company is supposed to email them.

I feel like at a certain point these constant fetch quests become unreasonable?? Is it too much to expect these groups to communicate with each other instead of making me run back and forth between them???

the thing about merlin and arthur is that, while yes there are lots of moments we can point to in the show when arthur is an utter arse to merlin, he is in fact — and especially based on what arthur knows — incredibly accepting and indulgent of merlin, about everything from his more seemingly benign quirks (intense strangeness... see: woodworms) to his more serious transgressions (apparently disappearing for days at a time for, *checks notes*, a drunken bender) and arthur just. lets him. by series 4 especially. merlin gets away with murder (which, to arthur at least, is an idiom)

and the thing about that is! i think merlin sees this as arthur ultimately not caring, further evidence of arthur not seeing him, and of arthur dismissing him as ultimately unimportant, in the grand scheme of things. but it's actually because arthur has just decided to dismiss whatever it is he has to, to have merlin in his life.

Welcome to the reverse verse! This is part 1 of 2 of a commission for @i-am-as-normal-as-you-are and I can't wait to tell you all about it, because I'm incapable of being normal and chill about these concepts, so I ran with it.

Charles Rowland was born in 1900, his mum was from India and moved to the UK after marrying Charles' dad, a soldier who was not... very loving. Charles' heritage gave him some problems, but none as bad as that one time in 1916 when he was sacrificed to a demon and spent the next 7 decades in Hell. He doesn't like to talk about it, except when it can get him what he wants. He was always an angry boy, or so he thought, but after his time spent in Hell, it became so much worse. He's explosive and unpredictable, and so he mostly avoids conflict. He doesn't need to fight anyone, as his charming personality and sweet smile (plus a few smart calculations) always seem to be enough to convince people to give him what he asks for. And when the fight is inevitable... well, he has Edwin for that!

Edwin Payne grew up very sheltered, in a deeply religious home, and he is proud of that. Don't try to argue with him, because he surely has a Bible verse that will help him win (and if not, he is not above using his croquet mallet now that he has someone to keep safe). Unfortunately for him, he realized at a quite young age that he felt attraction towards other boys. Even worse, somehow other people could tell as well, including those peers that ended up killing him for it (the rumour spread throughout school was that he had died due to AIDS, and most people just accepted it). He never acted on those unnatural urges of his, but when he met this ghost who had just escaped Hell... he decided not to risk eternal damnation, and to stay here with Charles, instead. Edwin has no interest in the supernatural or in magic, and sort of looks down on them, but luckily his friend's got that covered.
