so like. at what point are we going to stop listening to game companies saying "the game was poorly received and didn't meet our sales targets, and that's why we're removing it from storefronts and taking down all the servers mere months or even weeks after release" for titles that had a long expensive development, were barely marketed, and nobody knew they'd even released until after they heard they were getting shut down and couldn't be played/purchased anymore?

I feel like the prevailing takeaway for anyone who doesn't just conclude "yeah, game was pretty mid, makes sense to me" has usually been "this company just has unreasonably impossible sales expectations and treats every project like a failure if it doesn't print a trillion dollars". but these ARE allegedly experienced business execs who aren't complete idiots, and after this most recent debacle with Concord I'm starting to wonder if a bunch of these "games getting wiped out of existence when they underperform instead of just being allowed to persist as they are and maybe improve with time" cases in recent years might be more of a Warner-Discovery type situation, like nuking an entire animated series or film that was worked on for years and preventing it from being sold because it has to be officially unprofitable for the company to use it as a tax write-off. I look at a game that was worked on for 8 years and only made available for 2 weeks, and it's hard not to see the parallels.

A rough draft of something that I want to begin fleshing out this upcoming month! Thinking about Balan and Lance and their revealed forms, and what that might mean for their past and possible future forms. I want to draw a "hatted" form of Lance, based on the design patterns I've noted between him and Balan as far as contrast is concerned, and a potential future "nega" form of Balan, which may derive from his "hidden" self, based on what we've seen with Lance. It's all so interesting to think about :D

After the Dawntrail graphic update nerfed Alyx, I used fantasia to change a few features and Cope, basically. Over the last month I'd gotten used to her new face - even come to like it - until I'd get into gpose and try to capture her like I used to. None of the angles and shapes were the same anymore. I'd look at screenshots from weeks prior and feel utterly despondent that the face I knew for almost 10 years was just GONE.

While the actual feature shapes definitely changed (some due to new facial bones, some are just. completely nonsensical choices) I realized through close scrutiny that a lot of the difference was due to the lack of definition in the skin texture. I can't 3D sculpt, but I CAN paint, so I finally took matters into my own hands and manually edited the highlander face 1 diffuse in Procreate. I basically added shadows where they had removed them, and drew in what feels like a brand new version of the old iconic upper lip.

The eyeshadow is still a little funky up close, but I'm literally so relieved and happy I could cry. I almost did last night when I first imported the texture.

She's back. A little bit different, but she looks like herself again. She's back. WE'RE SO FUCKING BACK.

Conversations with a Dead Man

Temur staggers unsteadily back into his room at the Pendants. His head is spinning, his chest feels like it's trying to turn itself inside out, and his skin is somehow hot and cold and itchy all at once. He lets his greatsword clatter to the floor and just drops heavily onto the bed. He squeezes his eyes shut and tries to breathe evenly. Eventually, minute by painful minute, the feeling passes, leaving him only with a lingering dull ache. He lets out a weak groan and blearily opens his eyes again. Gods alive, he isn't sure he's ever felt that ill before.

The silence is broken by what's become a familiar voice. Well you look like shit.

Temur doesn't even sit up at first, and just wearily raises one hand off the bed in greeting. "Then I look about how I feel."

So are you going to tell me why I'm a ghost and you still look closer to the grave than me?

Temur pushes himself up into a sitting position. There, on the other side of the room, is Ardbert. He shakes his head. "Another Lightwarden. Didn't feel anything like this after the first one, but... I guess this one took a lot more out of me. Anyway, it's passing now. I'm sure I just need to rest a bit."

I know the feeling. Ardbert wanders past the table and chairs; they had discovered a while ago that sitting down is apparently a privilege of the corporeal form. So. You've got another Ascian to deal with now too?

Temur groans. "Don't start. If I have to spend another minute thinking about Ascian mind games and politicking, I'm walking right off that balcony."

Ardbert laughs. I know that feeling too. But you die and I've got no one left that can see me, so try to stay in it.

"Fair." Temur smiles slightly. Then, after a pause, he looks up. "Can I ask something?" Ardbert shrugs. "What was he like back in your day?"

Who?

"Seto."

Ardbert looks slightly surprised for a moment, and he looks down. He... well, he couldn't talk, that's one thing. I don't know if I could explain what a friend to me he was without sounding daft.

Temur's eyebrows raise slightly. "Try me."

Alright. Ardbert sighs and wanders over to stand next to Temur. Amaro live a long time, you know. And once they train with a rider, they bond to him through thick and thin. I know he was just an animal back then, but... well, if you saw how much that medallion means to him now, you've got an idea of what he meant to me then.

Temur nods solemnly, and Ardbert turns to look at him. Why do you ask? You got a friend like that back in your world, a chocobo or something?

"You know, where I'm from, they say the Xaela were the first to tame animals. Horses, dzo, yols... of course, I wasn't old enough to train one to ride myself before I left home, but believe me when I say I know what you mean."

Aye. I think I understand. Ardbert nods. Do me a favour, Temur? Tell me about them. Your friends back home.

Temur looks up and pauses, before nodding. "Kurdan. That's my chocobo's name. I'd never seen a chocobo before I went east, and I thought they were the strangest animals I'd ever seen. Birds that don't fly, but they run like a horse and pull carts like a dzo." He smiles again. "Kurdan was a stubborn one at first, but we got on pretty fast. He saw me through... a lot. What is it, almost five years now?"

"Then there's Libellule, my kongamato from Loth ast Vath. And the yol I bonded with at Bardam's Mettle, Anchin. That's a big thing for my people, I guess you don't know it." He lets out a quiet sigh. "I... I'm sure they're doing alright back home. I've got some friends who'll look after them. But I just hope I can see them again when all this is done."

You will, Ardbert answers decisively. You see this through, and they'll be waiting for you on the other side.

"I hope so. Uh, thanks. By the way."

Ardbert waves a hand dismissively. Don't mention it. Talking's all I'm much good for anyway, these days. How about you tell me about that Bardam's Mettle deal you mentioned? You've probably heard more than enough about my misadventures, I think you owe me a few good stories.

Temur laughs quietly. "Fair's fair. So if you don't have yols here, they're massive birds, big enough to carry someone my size and not even be weighed down. And ages ago, before my people ever left the Steppe, there was this warrior named Bardam..."
