This painting is part Wild Art Journaling and part painting. I love it deeply. It represents a moment in time. And when I began. With the writing which is deep underneath the layers. I did not know. I was stuck. Nothing was coming. But I kept going. Taking inspiration from what was directly around me. The lines “looking to see” and “that’s what comes from tidying up” were added from live painting the words as my mum came in to talk as I was painting. Both the phrases, like cut paper poems take on a new meaning in the context of the whole. The painting of this itself brought me back to myself. At the end of it I knew. It is the act of painting. Of creativity itself. That brings me home and shows me the way. On another note @faye_bridgwater may like to know that she gave me this canvas. Underneath even the writing is a felt tip scribble drawing by Dot. Maybe when she was 2? So this painting has all the layers. All the stories. I had it up in an exhibition and one person liked it. She really loved it. That made me very happy. It is a special painting. It is for sale. £1111. And I also do not at all mind if no one ever likes it. 08/20/2019 #artfans know me well! Got this #edwardgorey #postcard in the mail the other day 😘 Feeling pretty overwhelmed most days, I’m the type that can’t relax. I either have to be painting or getting stuff done so that I can paint later, it’s crazy really and I can’t help it! I did not grow up with emotionally available parents, they love me and are super supportive in all my endeavours but it’s not in their culture to talk about feelings much plus a language barrier so art became a great outlet for connection and I was doing it all the time. Then I had this art teacher for 6 years who pulled me aside one day when I was 16 who made me promise to never stop painting and then I went away to art school and painted 0 paintings and smoked a bunch of reefer with friends instead. After I graduated, said friend showed me paints again and then when I was 26, that art teacher, my only emotionally available parent for a long time, died suddenly and I actually haven’t been able to stop painting since! That was about 10 years ago. After my recent artist workshop, I started thinking more about how/why I choose my subject matter. Up until recently, I didn’t even think about my audience 😱 or what my goals were with my body of work. Travel is obviously a huge inspiration; not hard with beautiful places, colors, and fond memories of well-spent time in sentimental places, like Tulum for me (shoutout to my muse in this piece: @gitanotulum). The act of making is much more important (and sustaining) to me than my finished product. As an overly sensitive, creative introvert, a busy mind, it should shock no one that I’ve lived with what’s often debilitating anxiety for the past 15 years, It’s not uncommon or particularly tragic, but it’s a daily battle for me nonetheless. What I make usually ends up depicting something that brings me joy and peace. Creating and viewing pleasing aesthetics, patterns, and colors actually seem to calm my brain and neurosis! So much so that it becomes divine, centering soul stuff. I commemorate people, places, and things that allow for escape - if only for a moment - to a mental space of warmth and well-being. Day 2 #augustforartists Why you started creating I was that kid who was always drawing and painting. Any time I could take a class or go to a camp, it was some type of art camp. Leilani Joy’s “Why I Paint” Contest: Rules and Details

RULES:

1. Create a unique piece that answers the question, “Why I paint,” What inspires you as an artist to create? You can incorporate early influences, a tribute to another artist, film, or song that inspired you. Whatever it is that drives you to create!

2. Contest begins April 15th 2015, and ends at 11:59 PM PST on Sunday, May 31st, 2015! All entries must be submitted before this deadline. After the close of the contest  3 winners will be chosen.

3. All entires must be submitted via whyipaint.tumblr.com. Click the “SUBMIT YOUR ENTRY” button on the left of the page and follow the submission instructions.

4. Please include your name, and an optional short description of your work (no more than 1 paragraph please).

5. All entires must be 100% original artwork created by the entering artist. Copyrighted photographs or existing artwork will not be considered.

6. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. 

7. DO NOT enter work you've done previously. This must be a new original work.

7. Any medium welcome. Drawing, Painting, Digital, Collage, Etc but keep in mind the grand prize = A 15 piece set of paint brushes.

8. Black and white, Line Art, or Full Color are all acceptable.

9. Entries will be judged on effort and creativity so take your time and enjoy the process!

10.  International fans are encouraged and welcome to participate!

11. Most importantly HAVE FUN and be CREATIVE! 

12. Winners will be selected and announced on Monday, June 1st 2015.

Winter's Inspiration

So.. Yesterday amidst the deluge of snow blanketing our neck of the woods, i decided to give painting a go.  I fired up the inadequate space heater and committed myself to the garage and tried my best to put down on paper what i thought might be a new style for me.  I hoped to try a new color palette this time.  My wife the inspiration that she is practically shoved me out the door.  She knows that when i paint i get something out and thats what i need more than anything.  To get something out.

I will post a work in progress picture today at some point.  I also will post a video of what it looked like outside when i was working in the garage.  Thanks for keeping up with me i do appreciate it.
