okay i'm shocked i've never posted anything about my mi/mu oc before bc i've literally had her for over a decade, so i redrew an old drawing of her mi design! this is from may, it's the last thing i drew on my ipad before it died forever :') she had a cringy name for a long time so a couple years ago i changed it to liana or just lia! it's sounds more normal and has a slight resemblance to the old name and part of my own name :]
she first appeared in a dream that i still vividly remember sometime around mu's release, i still remember trying to draw her after waking up before just immediately redesigning her bc her hair was too hard for me to draw lol,, but now i feel like i'm actually happy with her design; it looks much more balanced than her older designs and she still looks like an mi/mu character while still resembling the vision i had in my dream
uh here's some info about her, i'll just share some post MU/pre MI stuff for now, lots of her story is a mix of ideas i had as a kid that i build on or adjust every once in a while
after graduating, lia applied to monsters inc. and scare industries as a scarer. she just barely doesn't get accepted at MI but gets accepted at scare industries. she is slowly working on improving; her goal is to advance her scare score and eventually transfer to monsters inc., but she enjoys working at SI so she stays for a few years until she feels ready to take her career to the next level
randall boggs, her partner since university, is very supportive of her and often likes to give her scaring tips and things he's learned working at MI. they live in an apartment in downtown monstropolis, which they bought after finding steady jobs at scare companies. outside of work, lia likes to paint landscapes and is inspired by the bits of nature between the industrial buildings of monstropolis
later on, lia reapplies at MI and gets accepted! she's set to transfer in a few weeks. randall and lia go out to celebrate, unknowing to the fact this is one of the last times they'll see each other for a while
by this point, lia has long noticed that randall has been arriving home later and later nights, saying he's been really occupied with "work stuff." he gets more and more defensive whenever she brings it up, and lia can't help but think he's hiding something
#monsters inc#monsters at work#monsters univeristy#monsters inc oc#monsters at work oc#monsters university oc#monstersona#disney#pixar#art#cartoons#oc#lia boggs#lia rosario#liana boggs#liana rosario#yeah she's basically a sona i've had since i was a kid lol#did the randall boggs thing give it away#didn't feel like putting them in this post but you can see some old sketches of her on my instagram#will share more info of her in future posts

I'm writing again to spotlight the GFM campaign of @nourfamily1989, a mother of five in Gaza.
If you've been following Nour's story, you probably already know that last month was very difficult for her and her family. It began with Nour being injured in a bombing, and ended with the family being displaced yet again, this time to an area even more crowded than the last so-called "safe zone."
Now her oldest son, Muhammad (13), has started bleeding from his ear, and Nour is worried he might lose his hearing if he can't get medical treatment soon.
In her post about Muhammad, she writes:
We faced endless suffering for 11 months. With the continued bombing day and night. We kept wondering when this nightmare will end????? Do you still hear our cries?? To those who have compassion. Don't abandon us.
Let's do whatever we can to make sure that Nour does not feel like she's being abandoned. If you can, please donate; if not, then help by sharing.
Donation link (GFM)

For info about how Nour's fundraiser has been vetted and organized, see this post by @/killy.
The goal for Nour's campaign is now to reach the next milestone of $25,000. For every 5k we raise, we're one step closer to ensuring her entire family will be able to evacuate if the Rafah crossing should reopen in the near future.
Currently: $20,991 / $25,000
Total GFM goal: $90,000

Mohammed has 74 hours to pay his tuition fees or he'll be deported.
My other promotion lists
Updated: Sep 5
Member(s): @mohamedabushaban06 (Mohamed Abushaban)
Verification: link (slightly outdated info on deadline). @victoriawhimsey is a trusted source who has contacts in Gaza to help her vet campaigns. See here for more proof of her credibility (scroll down to my rb).
Payment methods: Paypal, credit/debit
Donation drives: @rebecca-levin-art art commissions
Summary: Mohammed is studying abroad in Qatar and needs to pay his semester's tuition of €3,000 before the deadline or he will be sent back to Gaza.
Current progress:
€ 1,773 3,039 / 3,000 / 20,000
Please donate if you're able to and share.
Campaign/family details:
Mohammed is a young man who left everything in Gaza behind to rebuild his life abroad. He's currently studying medicine at a Qatar university.
He needs to pay his registration fees of €3,000 for the semester by the hard, final deadline of Sep 6.
To be cautious, I've set the deadline to 12am in Qatar, which is 74 hours from when I'm writing this post.
The school has already offered him multiple extensions and this is the last they're willing to give.
If Mohammed fails to reach this goal, he'll lose his academic opportunities and be deported back to Gaza (which he worked hard to escape and is very dangerous right now).
By supporting him, you keep him safe and help support his future where he helps others.
As of writing this, he'll need to get around €400 daily.

The air buzzes as a hooded figure walks through the dewy grass. Hair stands on end as the city seems to shake within itself. A door closes silently, and less than an hour later, the figure returns to the static-filled wilderness of Teague, Texas, leaving wreckage in his wake.
Quantico, Virginia
“That’s great, baby girl, but it’s too long,” Derek chides gently.
“No, it isn’t,” Penelope argues. “This is a correct sentence.”
Derek clicks his tongue, then straightens from Penelope’s side.
“Historically, the longest sentence ever printed was 823 words long,” Spencer interjects from his desk. “Victor Hugo put it in Les Misérables.”
“Well, I’m going to be more miserable if we don’t cut some words out of this,” Derek complains. “Where’s the bookworm?”
“Me?” you ask from Hotch’s doorway.
“No, Frankenstein,” he deadpans.
“Actually,” Spencer says, “Frankenstein is-“
“The doctor,” everyone in the BAU bullpen finishes together.
Spencer raises his hands in a dramatic surrender, and you heed Derek’s beckoning and walk to his desk. He points at his screen, and Penelope sighs as she pushes his chair back. You drop your chin forward to read the briefing on the screen and then look at Penelope with your brows furrowed.
“What’s the problem?” you inquire.
“It’s too long. That sentence takes up four lines!” Derek exclaims.
“It’s a report,” Hotch calls. “Not a contender for the Pulitzer.”
You shake your head at Derek’s dramatics, then point to an accurate but lengthy transition phrase. “Remove this, add a period, and fix the capitalization on the right side.”
Derek lifts his arms in victory as Penelope does as you instructed. She hums, pleased, and submits the report to Hotch.
“You’re the best reader in the world, sweetheart,” Derek tells you.
“Careful, Penelope’s right here,” you warn.
“We can share him,” she assures you. “For now.”
“Iceland is probably home to the best readers,” Spencer tells JJ. “They have the highest per capita book reading rate in the world and a literacy rate of about 99%.”
“I bet Iceland is quiet,” Derek muses. “What with all the reading, not so much time to talk.”
“Was that aimed at me?” Spencer replies.
“Conference room!” Hotch barks. “Now.”
You abandon your post beside Derek’s desk and follow him into the conference room. As you lower into your seat, Hotch leans over the table and puts the phone on speaker.
“SSA Hotchner,” he greets. “I have the BAU here with me.”
“Pleasure,” a man with a moderate thick southern accent says. “I’m Deputy Sheriff Neilson of Teague, Texas. This morning, we discovered a man dead in a hotel room.”
“Murdered?” JJ asks.
“We’re not sure,” he replies. “ME took a preliminary look and reckons the victim was electrocuted. But we’re having… We have reservations about actually entering the crime scene or moving the body.”
“Why?” Hotch says.
“The room is spotless. By which I mean, it’s too clean.”
“Do you have CSI photos? Any photos?” Spencer inquires.
“Emailing those now. Photographer got in and out pretty quickly, but the photos should show you how odd this seems. Even the vents are clean, as far back as you can see.”
Penelope types something on her laptop and then casts the images onto the large television screen behind Hotch. He steps out of the way and listens to Neilson’s account of the distressed 911 caller: a housekeeper who entered the room with a master key.
“It’s way too clean,” you murmur.
“That’s beyond what any hotel maid is trained to do,” Spencer adds.
“Or paid to do,” Derek says.
“Penelope, can you go back?” you request after she clicks another image.
You stand and round the table to view the wide-frame photo of the hotel room. There’s something off about it – even more than the cleanliness.
“Is there another picture of the nightstand?” you ask. “Closer?”
Penelope exits the full-screen view and scrolls through the files before she finds one. After it loads on the television, you point to the Bible on the nightstand.
“That should be in the drawer,” Hotch says. “Nielson will call back in a few minutes. I gave him the go ahead to have CSI process. I doubt there’s any physical evidence left to disturb.”
“The Bible should be in the drawer, yes,” you agree. “But that’s not what I noticed.”
“Is that bed frame waxed?” Derek interrupts, peering over your shoulder.
“You’d notice,” Penelope jokes.
“Hotch, I can call the cleaning staff to find out if there’s a reason the room is that level of clean.”
“Sure,” Hotch agrees. “Make sure you ask about the air vent, too.”
Derek salutes as he exits the conference room. After he leaves, you point to the Bible's top and bottom edges.
“The pages aren’t big enough,” you point out. “Whatever is in here, I don’t think it’s the Bible. I think it’s a paperback in a Bible binding.”
“Why would someone do that?” JJ asks. “Aside from the obvious.”
“In a scene this clean, it has to be a signature,” Hotch answers.
“We need to know what book it is,” you say.
Hotch calls Nielson back while you, Spencer, and JJ look through the rest of the pictures. It’s a weird scene, something you haven’t seen before, but it’s carefully constructed. As close to perfect as you’ve ever seen a criminal come.
“Hey, where’s your boyfriend?” JJ asks you.
You turn your head slowly, then scoff. “Tim is not my boyfriend.”
“No, they just use my office to makeout sometimes,” Penelope interrupts.
“That was one time,” you argue. “And we’ve barely seen each other since then.”
“Because he’s moving to the FBI and across the country,” JJ points out. “For you.”
“Not for me.”
“That’s not true,” Spencer states.
You, Penelope, and JJ turn toward him together. He shrugs and continues examining the photos. Spencer’s comment doesn’t change your mind, though. Tim Bradford is part of your life; you have feelings for each other, but it ends there. It has to.
“We would’ve done something already if we were going to,” you admit softly.
“You did. You pulled him out of the bullpen and into a rom-com worthy smooch fest,” Penelope says.
“Who did what?” Hotch asks as he returns.
“Uh, Spencer found a loose screw on the bed frame,” Penelope lies.
“No, I didn’t,” he defends, standing to his full height.
“Oh, then I misheard.”
“I’ll assume I did too, then,” Hotch deadpans. “CSI said you were right. It’s not a Bible. It’s an annotated copy of Stephen King’s Revival.”
You close your eyes and pinch the bridge of your nose. “Fantastic.”
“That means something to you then,” Derek muses as he returns. “Hotel said there is absolutely no way their cleaning staff did that. Bonus, the hotel was closed for two weeks before it reopened four days ago, when our vic checked in.”
“Why was it closed?” Spencer asks.
“Let me guess. An ant infestation,” you say.
Derek’s brows raise as he begins to clap slowly.
“Revival is a nod to horror classics like Frankenstein and Lovecraft,” you begin. “It’s the story of a Methodist preacher who discovers ‘secret electricity’ that can heal people. Jacobs decides that it can take him into the afterlife and – as in most Stephen King novels – loses his mind in the process of trying to get there.”
“How do ants play into this?” Derek asks.
“How does murder play into this?” Hotch amends.
“Jacobs has an unhealthy obsession with Jamie, a boy he met while he was still a preacher, before his family died and his decline began. When they meet, Jamie is playing with toy soldiers on an ant hill. When they open the door into the afterlife, neither heaven nor hell greets them. Instead, it’s something called ‘The Null.’ Inside, ant-like creatures serve ‘Mother,’ who takes over dead bodies and uses them for her purpose: to bring more souls into The Null.”
“That answered half of the question.”
“Jacobs kills with electricity in his attempt to go to the afterlife.” You glance at the map showing Teague, Texas, and tilt your head. “Is the hotel the tallest building in the city?”
Penelope’s fingernails click against the keyboard for several seconds before she replies, “Tallest building, second tallest structure. There’s a decommissioned water tower that stands taller.”
“Why was it decommissioned?” Spencer asks.
Hotch raises the phone to his ear and raises his finger for Penelope to wait. A moment later, Deputy Sheriff Nielson is connected to the call and brought into the conversation.
“Why was the water tower decommissioned?” Spencer asks him.
“It was struck by lightning one time too many,” Nielson answers. “Teague is the lightning capital of the world, if you didn’t know, and over the years, we’ve had to learn to adapt to that.”
“Hotch,” you whisper.
He turns around, facing you with his back to the phone and the team.
“In the book, Jacobs goes to the tallest place he knows of, where’s there’s a big metal flagpole, and that’s where he makes his final kill.”
“You think this guy will do the same?”
“Without looking at his notes in the book, I can’t be absolutely sure, but if he has enough of an infatuation with the book and electricity to stage the scene like he did… it’s likely.”
Hotch nods once, then turns back toward the table. “Deputy Sheriff Nielson, our team is inbound. We’ll be there in a few hours to assist your department with the case.”
Nielson exhales, sounding like it would make him physically lighter. “I can’t thank you enough, SSA Hotchner. We’ll be waiting for you.”
Someone knocks on the open conference room door as you gather your things. You don’t look up until JJ elbows you in the ribs.
“I couldn’t help but overhear the last part,” Tim Bradford says, not even sparing a glance at you. “I can lead the tactical apprehension team.”
“I’ll work on finalizing the assignment,” Hotch agrees.
“We don’t need a tactical team,” you interject. “He’ll get spooked too easily for that.”
Tim keeps his eyes on Hotch, but you can see his jaw working as he tenses his facial muscles.
“All due respect,” Tim begins.
“No, Tim,” you snap, turning toward him quickly. “This is not a storm the castle operation. This guy isn’t limited to electricity, and he will kill anyone who gets in his way.”
Hotch looks between you and Tim and surveys his tight fists and your short breaths. The final decision is his, but he respects your opinion. Then, he remembers that Tim saved you and Spencer on his first day with the FBI. You bring different skills to the BAU, and he doesn’t know which he may need in the Lone Star State.
“Your team will accompany, Bradford,” Hotch agrees. “But you are on standby until further notice. You don’t say or do anything without my instruction, is that understood?”
“Understood, sir,” Tim agrees.
He leaves the conference room first, and you follow Hotch into his office and close the door.
“Hotch, I trust Tim,” you explain. “But if you want to solve this case without losing more lives, you need to tread lightly. If he gets to close, it’s over.”
Hotch nods once, and you step backward, preparing to leave.
“You said the guy in the book had an unhealthy obsession with someone,” Hotch remembers. “Think that affects our investigation in any way?”
You consider the possibility of a Jacobs and Jamie-type conspiracy. It wouldn’t shock you to learn that the killer wasn’t working alone, but something about the efficiency of this particular kill makes you think it was just one man: one man who could somehow control all of the variables in that hotel room.
“Not yet,” you answer carefully. “It took Jacobs a while to actually bring Jamie in as an adult. For this case, I’d say he’s more likely to recruit a former cell-mate or small-time criminal from his past to assist him in the big kill.”
“Victim?”
“There’s only one person in the world who knows that, and he won’t be in any mood to talk to us.”
“Penelope is looking into the town’s residents. If she finds anything, I’ll let you be the first to look.”
“Thank you, sir. Oh, and one more thing. The book isn’t just about faith and the nature of reality. It’s about addiction and morality. Drug addiction, healing addiction, someone turning away from God to make a deal with something worse than the Devil. Whoever this is, there’s more to him than meets the eye. We need to be careful.”
“We’re all coming back from this,” Hotch assures you. “We’re wheels up in twenty.”
Tim splashes water in his face, then grips the edges of the porcelain sink as it drips from his chin. He doesn’t look up in the mirror and doesn’t want to see anything except you. Since you walked into Mid-Wilshire nearly a decade after dropping out as a rookie, you have consumed Tim Bradford’s thoughts, his time, attention, and – most terrifyingly – his heart.
“Regretting arguing with her, aren’t you?”
Tim stands up at the sound of Derek’s voice. He snatches a paper towel from the dispenser and wipes his hands harshly, then wipes his face before he tosses it into the trash can.
“I didn’t come here for her,” Tim defends.
Derek smiles. “Nobody said you did. Nobody except you.”
“I’m not doing this with you.”
Tim begins to walk toward the door but stops when Derek says, “If you didn’t come for her, you need to tell her that.” Tim’s head turns toward his shoulder, so Derek continues, “Coming back into your life wasn’t easy for her, and don’t let her think there’s a spot in it for her if there isn’t.”
“I’d never lead her on.”
“Maybe not on purpose.”
Tim pushes the bathroom door open too hard and walks out.
“What’d the door do to you?” you question from the hallway, your go bag slung over your shoulder.
“It was in the way,” he grumbles.
“Yeah, they tend to do that.”
You look at each other silently for a moment, then speak simultaneously.
“No, go ahead,” Tim insists.
“I just wanted to say I’m sorry if I overstepped earlier. The situation, this killer, it’s all very volatile and I don’t want to see anybody else get hurt.”
“I get it,” Tim responds. “And I’m sorry I stopped reaching out after I went back to LA.”
“It’s okay.” You smile and say, “A taste of my own medicine won’t kill me.”
“It was different.”
You nod, then lead Tim to the plane. It’s a few hours to Texas, and you have over 400 pages of literary research to review on the way. Plus, whatever fun facts Spencer can tell you about lightning.
Hotch’s phone rings as you begin your descent into Texas. He answers it, his brows pinching as he listens to the caller. Extending his hand, he says, “It’s for you.”
Tim glances at you as he takes Hotch’s phone. He introduces himself, then shifts so that his gaze is directly on you for the duration of the call.
“Where?” he asks after listening for several breaths. Then, he says, “Thanks… I’m not, but I can… I’ll let you know.”
He hangs up and returns Hotch’s phone, ignoring the intrigued looks from the rest of the BAU as he stands to speak to you.
“That was Angela,” he says. “Oscar filed a new residency and employment with his parole officer. Then, he got a new parole officer.”
“What are you saying? He moved counties?” you clarify.
“He moved states.”
Tim steps his right leg back into the aisle of the jet to address your team. He concludes, “He moved to Teague, Texas.”
“And you think this Oscar is our killer?” Hotch asks. He looks at you, but your eyes are on Tim.
“If Oscar is the Reverend Jacobs in this scheme, then he’d have another contact in California either with him or coming right behind him,” you point out.
“Or he is the co-conspirator,” Spencer adds.
“In either case, we’d have to comb through decades of Oscar’s criminal history," Hotch says. "Tim? Do you think he’s the mastermind or the recruit?”
“I think he’d used somebody long before he let himself be used,” Tim decides.
“I can’t imagine him being this cold-blooded, though,” you say. “He’s a narcissist, not a psychotic murderer trying to open the gates of Hell.”
“If he’s a narcissist and he found someone to look up to, it could get dangerous very quickly,” Spencer offers. “His narcissistic tendencies would return and likely be worsened. He’d…”
“Have a god complex?” Derek guesses.
“More or less, yes.”
“Then we need to find Oscar and find out what is going on,” Hotch instructs.
“I can do it,” Tim offers. “He knows me.”
Hotch looks at you, and you nod, which ends the discussion. Tim is running headfirst into danger for a case you didn’t even want him to work. It’s a very good thing he isn’t your boyfriend, you tell yourself, even as your hands shake at the mere thought of losing him.
Teague, Texas
“Deputy Sheriff Nielson, this is my team. Special Agents Reid, Morgan, Jareau,” Hotch introduces before he gets to you.
You each shake the Deputy Sheriff’s hand before you enter an oversized office with a large wooden table centered inside. A cardboard box of evidence is on the table and two folders bearing the case number rest atop it. You expected as much - or as little - with such a pristine scene, but seeing how little you have to go on is disheartening.
“Are there any people in your jurisdiction that you think are capable of something like this?” Derek asks Nielson. “Any motive?”
Nielson taps the table in thought, then tips his head to the side. “Kid named Nicholas just got back from a stint in Texas State Pen. He started in high school, little things like petty theft and peepin’ tom charges and worked his way up to manslaughter. Thinks he’s hot stuff around here.”
“What’s Nicholas’ full name?” JJ asks. “We can run him through the federal database and work from there.”
“Hutchinson.”
You look away from the nearly empty evidence box. “Hutchinson? Do you know if he’s related to Oscar Hutchinson?”
“Sure, he mentioned a cousin named Oscar once or twice. Seemed close, but Oscar doesn’t live around here.”
“Wait, Oscar?” Derek repeats. “Oscar who-”
“Tim is going to see?” you finish, unlocking your phone to warn Tim. “Yeah, that Oscar.”
“I take it you have a profile, then?” Nielson asks Hotch.
“One better,” Hotch answers. “We have a suspect.”
You ignore their continued conversation as the phone rings.
“C’mon, Tim,” you mumble as the dial tone trills in your ear. The line finally connects, and you ask, “Tim? Tim, you there?”
“I haven’t seen your name in a while.”
You take in a sharp breath as you wave your hand toward JJ.
“I didn’t know Bradford had gotten his little rookie back.”
“What do you want, Oscar?” you demand.
Your words catch your teammates' attention far quicker than your actions, and Derek rushes to your side. He wraps his arm around your shoulder and lays his head atop yours to listen to your phone call.
“Oh, you misunderstand!” Oscar exclaims with a laugh. “This is about what I can do for you.”
“You know exactly what I’d like you to do,” you reply darkly.
“The BAU has jaded you, dear. Tim is perfectly safe. Aren’t you, Sergeant?”
“Everything is fine,” Tim calls. “Just like the last time we split duties.”
“That’s enough small talk,” Oscar interrupts. “I assume you know about my cousin, Nick.”
“No, I don’t.”
Oscar takes several breaths before he hums. “You’re a good liar. But you’re a better cop, so I’m sure you know exactly who I’m talking about. He was released from Texas State Penitentiary last week and then poof! he disappeared. He’s in Texas, you’re in Texas… you catching my drift?”
“He went missing?” you clarify. “Immediately after being released from prison?”
“There it is. You understand my concerns. Now, to give you a little incentive to release him unharmed, I’ll promise to keep Daddy Cop here unharmed.”
Tim makes a noise of protest, but there’s a roaring in your ears that you can’t ignore. You don't even notice Derek lift his head long enough to repeat Oscar's nickname for Tim.
“Oscar, have you read Stephen King?” you ask.
“No. Live enough horror and you don’t want to read it,” Oscar answers.
“I think your cousin is in danger,” you tell him, looking up at Derek.
“Well, that’s a new play.”
“Oscar, I’m not playing. We’re not here for you or your cousin, we’re here because someone was murdered last night.”
“Sure, because the LAPD cares about that.”
“I’m FBI now,” Tim corrects.
The line goes silent. Your heart races, pounding in your chest, and you prepare to run out of this station and look in every building in the county until you find Oscar and Tim.
“My plan may need some slight adjustments,” Oscar muses.
“Oscar, listen to me. Tell Tim what you know, let him come back to the station, and I promise you that we will find your cousin and get him home safely.”
“I’m not big on the first two points. I’ll tell your boy what I know, and then I leave him here. A baseless arrest is the last thing I need.”
“Oscar do not try to find Nick alone!” you implore. “Let us do this; there’s more at stake than you realize.”
“You have no idea.”
The line clicks, and you clasp your phone between both hands to keep yourself from throwing it at the wall. Derek rubs his hand along your back as he looks at Hotch.
“What can we do to help?” Nielson asks.
“He won’t hurt Tim,” you assure your team. “He’s full of himself, not stupid. Give him a few minutes, and if we haven’t heard back, I will hunt him down myself.”
“You said Nick is in danger,” JJ says. “What does that mean?”
You lean into Derek’s touch and explain, “I was looking at it backward. Nick isn’t Jamie, he’s Mary. He’s the sacrificial lamb. Whoever our killer is, he plans to offer Nick up for whatever his purpose is.”
“Picked the wrong state to deal in religious symbolism and the deadly sins,” Neilson murmurs. “Dallas SWAT, Texas Bureau of Investigations, and Fort Cavazos have teams on standby ready to assist you in any way you need.”
“Excellent,” Hotch responds. “Considering our tactical leader is currently being held hostage.”
You blow out an amused breath and argue, “I told you not to let him come.”
“What can we do while we wait?” Derek asks.
“Find out when the next lightning storm is,” Spencer answers.
“Yep, that’s all you, Pretty Boy, get to work.”
Spencer rolls his eyes but opens a laptop regardless. On the plane, he found out that the estimated time of death aligned perfectly with a cloud-to-ground lightning strike within a few miles of the city. Considering the killer’s infatuation with the book, you support the opinion he’ll time his next kill with another lightning storm.
“We also need to look for places he might choose to commit the murder,” you say. “Between the first mention of the ants and the ultimate sacrifice, Jacobs took more lives. Granted, some of them took a while. I… I don’t think he’ll take that route, actually.”
Your phone lights up, you answer it before the first ring ends, then place it on speaker.
“Hello?” Penelope asks.
“Oh, hey,” you greet, setting your phone on the table.
“Whoa, don’t sound so disappointed that it’s me,” she replies.
“Tim was abducted,” Spencer tells her. “We’re waiting for a call with his whereabouts.”
“Speaking of which,” JJ begins. “Is no one going to mention what Oscar called him?”
“It’s an inside joke,” you say. “What’s up, Garcia?”
“I got the property records for the land surrounding the old water tower,” she explains. “It’s on public land, but everything around it is private.”
“Right,” Nielson agrees. “You can’t get to it without going through someone’s yard now.”
“But, the lot east of the tower was just rented,” Penelope continues. “To Nicholas Hutchinson.”
“No way he can afford something like that fresh out of prison,” Derek argues.
You nod but then consider the idea of land plots. “How many acres?”
“Seven,” Penelope reads.
“Tim said that everything was fine, like the last time we split duties, right?” you ask.
“Yes,” Spencer answers. “Does that mean something to you?”
“Maybe,” you murmur. “He’s either giving us a clue or talking about something I don’t remember.”
“The last time you worked together was in LA,” Hotch reminds you.
You stare at the table, thinking. You spent most of that trip trying to separate your life and work from the past. It didn’t work, and you and Tim were held at gunpoint by a man trying to save you from everything except himself.
“We didn’t work together much,” you say. “I worked with Lucy, he went with Derek, and then we stayed together until we were in the townhouse with Riley.”
“No, you weren’t,” Hotch says.
You turn quickly, your brows raised.
“When we went to the last scene – the one where we found the novella about you – Tim was at the station. Pissed off enough that people stayed away from him, from what I’ve heard.”
“Whoa, watch your language Hotch,” Derek chides. “This is a work trip.”
“I’m still your boss, Morgan.”
“But a big teddy bear of a boss,” Penelope interjects.
“Regardless of who remembers what,” JJ says, “what does that mean to you?”
“I made him stay at the station,” you reply. “He was mad, obviously, but… he was fine. We thought I was in danger because I jumped the gun.”
“And we found two bodies,” Spencer mumbles.
Your breath catches, and you lock eyes with Derek before you look at JJ, then Hotch.
“What?” Spencer asks, looking up from the looping radar on his laptop.
“Hutchinson wouldn’t kill people right in front of Tim, would he?” JJ asks slowly.
“Deputy Sheriff,” you call, “have you had any double murders here recently?”
“No murders, no, but there was a car accident that killed two young girls about a week ago,” he replies. “Out on County Road 650.”
“Any structures near it?” Hotch asks.
“A couple outbuildings a few hundred feet from the curve where it happened.”
“Is there any way our abducted agent would know something had occurred there?”
“There’s a collection of flowers, stuffed animals, stuff like that. And… yeah, there’s a large picture of the girls, the family put it up.”
“We need to get out there, Hotch,” Derek urges.
“I’m going with you,” you say.
“How far is that from the water tower?” Spencer asks.
“A few miles,” Nielson replies. “Faster if you cut through a field.”
You slide your phone into your pocket and follow Derek and Hotch out of the police station. For the first time since you met Tim Bradford, your roles have reversed, and you may be the only thing standing between him and something he’ll never come back from. He’s saved you more than once, and you plan on returning the favor.
“Slow down,” Penelope instructs, her voice clear through Hotch’s speakers. “You’re approaching the curve where the accident happened.”
“Guys,” you say. “Oscar’s calling.”
Hotch slows, steering the SUV onto the grassy shoulder beside the road. He keeps his eyes up, but Derek turns in the passenger seat to watch you as you answer the call.
“You have one chance to save yourself, Oscar,” you remind him.
“He’s unharmed,” Oscar grumbles. “But I’d like to offer a trade.”
“We had a deal.”
“Yes, but this one involves a better outcome for me.”
“What do you want?”
“I’ll tell you where I am, and you can come get me and your boy. In exchange, I want to assist in the search for Nicholas.”
“And then you’re going to jail for abducting a federal agent,” Derek interjects.
“I’m not bartering with you,” Oscar replies.
You meet Hotch’s eyes in the rearview mirror, and when you exhale shakily, he nods.
“You’ve got a deal, Oscar. But you’re on thin ice,” you respond.
“Excellent, that’s where I do my best skating. We’re in some nasty barn off 650.”
Hotch pulls back onto the road, hitting his blinker to turn onto a dirt path that travels straight toward the outbuilding Nielson pointed them toward.
“We’re here,” you tell Oscar. “We’re coming in and you-”
“Better not have a weapon, yes, I know.”
Derek pulls the large sliding door open, and you enter behind Hotch, who raises his gun. Oscar lifts his hands lazily, and Tim stares at you from the back corner of the barn. You walk around Hotch and straight toward Tim.
“I’m sorry,” you say, reaching up to release the knotted rope holding his hands above his head.
“You can apologize later,” he replies. “Oscar’s not our guy.”
“We know. That’s what I was calling to tell you. I had it all wrong.”
“And now?”
You lift your brows quickly, silently acknowledging that you aren’t sure what you have now. You push higher onto your tiptoes before you stumble and place your hand on Tim’s chest to right yourself just as his hands fall from the pole above him. He catches you, his hands firm against your waist as you tip toward him. Looking into his eyes, you don’t move back. At least not until Derek clears his throat.
“Oscar has an idea of who might consider Nicholas as a perfect sacrifice,” Hotch says. “If you’re ready.”
“Yeah, let’s go,” you agree, stepping back.
As you exit the building, you notice the air is growing uncomfortably humid. With your hand against your forehead, you look up at the sky. Thick, dark clouds are gathering in the north, and the wind shifts to blow against your right side.
“There’s a storm coming,” you point out. “A bad one.”
“You think it’s time?” Derek inquires.
“Time for what?” Tim asks.
You drop your voice and say, “Whoever has Nic is going to kill him in some grand display.”
“Where?”
Shrugging, you admit, “Maybe the water tower, maybe somewhere else.”
Tim lifts his brows, then says, “Sounds like you need to do your job instead of worrying about me.”
“You’re insufferable.”
“Yet you suffer me,” Tim deadpans. “Let’s go.”
“Without a solid lead, we’re going to have to split up,” Hotch explains back at the station. “There are three potential targets for the killing site. The water tower, the top of the hotel - again, or a barn out towards the lakes.”
“But there’s only five of us,” Spencer points out.
“Six,” Hotch corrects. “Bradford’s team was called up to Salt Lake City for a counterterrorism case, but he’s still here.”
“So, we’re sending two people out, so the lucky couple gets to fight a crazed psychopath who kills people with electricity,” Derek reiterates snappishly.
“During a lightning storm,” JJ adds.
“We really can’t narrow this down more?” you inquire. “What about the lead Oscar gave us? Lev Davids?”
“I’d recommend going that route,” Tim interrupts, entering the private office. “Oscar finally told me why he suspects Lev.”
“A criminal he looked up to?” you guess.
Tim nods, and his eyes remain locked on yours as he says, “Monica Stevens.”
The rest of your team turns to look at you, and you stand.
“Tim,” you begin. “I have no idea who that is.”
“Right, sorry, after your time. She’s a corrupt lawyer, she worked for Elijah Stone and Abril.”
“Now those names we know,” Derek announces, smiling again. “I’ll get Penelope on their trails, see what she can find.”
“We only have fifteen minutes before the storm is here,” Spencer says. “Not much time to find someone and get there. And if we’re wrong, we’ll be too late.”
“Then we split up, as planned,” Hotch replies. “If Garcia finds something or someone gets a better lead, we reconvene. For now, it’s our only choice.”
“Why don’t we ask Nielson for officers to help us?” JJ asks.
“We can, but they’re not trained in hostage negotiations and don’t understand the psychology of someone who would do this. There’s too much risk leading them in all the way.”
“We’ll take the water tower,” you say, walking toward Tim.
“I was going to send you with Derek,” Hotch argues.
“Send him with Spencer,” you suggest. “You know we can do this, Hotch. Besides, he may not even go to the water tower.”
Hotch sighs, shaking his head with a hand on his hip. He looks more like a father of five than someone leading a highly trained group of federal agents, but he trusts you. So, he lets you go.
“What are the chances we’re walking into the middle of a storm?” you ask, bracing yourself against the wind as you exit the station.
“You’re talking metaphorically, right?” Tim checks, opening the door for you. “This is going to be awful.”
“That’s not comforting!”
Tim prepares to close the door as he says, “It’s true.”
Your phone buzzes as Tim steers the car around a large rock. The water tower looms above you, tall and imposing against the dark storm clouds. Thunder rumbles in the distance, growing closer as the car shakes with its intensity.
“Garcia hacked into Stevens’ computer; Lev is planning to use the water tower,” you communicate. “She isn’t sure what their connection is or what Stevens’ motivation is for encouraging him to do this, but she’s still working.”
“We can’t wait,” Tim says, glancing at his watch. “The storm’s about to intensify.”
You reach for the door handle and say, “Then let’s do this.”
The wind closes the car door harder than you intended, and you draw your shoulders up, hoping Lev didn’t hear the noise. As you approach the water tower, you adjust your holster so your gun will be accessible even as you climb 150 feet into the air while the wind blows nearly 60 miles an hour.
“Any words of encouragement?” you ask Tim, looking up the metal ladder that seems to reach far past the clouds.
“The chance of tornadoes is low,” he replies over the wind.
Looking over your shoulder, you exclaim, “That is not encouraging! Or comforting!”
Tim lays his hand on your back, leans forward, and promises, “I’m right behind you.”
You nod, take a deep breath, and wrap your hands around the ladder rung. Tim boosts you slightly, and you can feel the metal shift in the wind. Climbing up, you remind yourself not to look down and keep moving as fast as possible without compromising your safety or Tim’s.
“Cavalry is here,” he says as you near the halfway point.
“I really hope they brought a sniper,” you grumble.
Lightning flashes brightly, striking nearly to the ground in the not-far distance, and you hold the ladder tighter as thunder follows it. You’re nearly out of time, and if Lev is ahead of schedule or planning for more lightning, you may be too late to save Nic. Worse, you realize, is that you may be unable to save yourself. Climbing onto a giant metal lightning conductor during a severe thunderstorm was a job requirement today, but it may not have been your best idea ever. You and Tim are on your own, and you have to save a life, keep yourselves safe, and then find a way off this tower before the storm worsens.
Nearing the top, you slow, attempting to gauge where Nic and Lev are. Before you can guess, you hear footsteps. Tim sees the shadow of someone approaching the ladder and climbs several rungs. His chest presses against your back as he wraps his arms around the side of the ladder. You trust him to hold your weight as you let go of the ladder and pull your gun from its holster.
“You need to go!” Lev yells.
“Not going to happen,” Tim replies. “Put your hands where we can see them, and this gets easier.”
“I have to finish! My mission is nearly complete!”
“Your mission?” you repeat. “Or Monica’s mission?”
Lev doesn’t reply, and his shadow remains in place.
“Don’t do this for someone who doesn’t care about you, Lev,” you implore. “There’s more in this world. There’s better people. You can have a life. But not if you do this.”
“You don’t know what I can have,” Lev argues.
He walks toward the top of the ladder, and you aim up and ahead of you before you pull the trigger. Lev drops to the metal balcony as the bullet whizzes by. It cracks loudly when it impacts the tank.
“Go, go,” Tim instructs in your ear.
You slide your gun into the holster quickly and pull yourself up the last few rungs. When you grip the handrail and spin onto the balcony, Lev is gone. Tim joins you, pulling his rifle off his back and into his hands. You duck when another lightning strike flashes, but you can’t focus on the storm now.
“The storm is coming from the north,” Tim reminds you, whispering as he leans toward you. “That means he’s probably on that side.”
You nod, looking over his shoulder quickly before you point toward the north, the opposite side of the tank. He gives you hand signals as the rumbling thunder softens. You will lead the way, and Tim will ensure Lev doesn’t sneak up behind you. It’s a dangerous game of cat and mouse you’re caught in. There is no choice but to play, however, and you distantly wonder if this is what Jamie felt like in the book. But Jamie didn’t have his own gun, you remember. Or Tim Bradford watching his six.
The first raindrop landing on your cheek is an omen, a reminder that even when you get to the other side of the balcony, this is just beginning. As the sporadic drops become a steady downpour, you fight the urge to lower your gun and wipe your face. Tim moves silently behind you, and you wish you were back in Quantico. You wonder what you’d be feeling right now if you had just told you care about him when you had the chance. It’s gone now, and nothing you can do will change that. If you survive this storm, you’ll face Tim Bradford, unafraid and determined. The rain may saturate your clothes as you hear someone screaming in pure fear, but Tim has the unrivaled power to transform your life like heavy rain, cleansing and shaping you just by being near you.
“Steady,” Tim murmurs behind you.
He taps your left shoulder, and you look in that direction. Your eyes widen when you see the large metal pole extending from the side of the tower. It wasn’t in any of the pictures you reviewed of the city, so you know Lev is deviating from the book, no longer trusting nature to do the job for him unassisted.
“He’s scared,” you whisper.
“That’s not comforting,” Tim replies.
“Lev,” you call, pressing yourself against the tank. “Do you like Revival?”
“There has to be more,” he says, raising his voice over the rain. “This is only the beginning.”
“Did Monica promise you that?” Tim asks.
“This isn’t about her!” Lev screams. “It’s about me and what I deserve!”
“Life in prison?”
“No! Vindication!”
You glance at Tim, and his expression mirrors yours. Lev is having a mental breakdown, and you don’t have the time to pull him back to reality.
“Last chance to surrender,” Tim tells him. “If you don’t, we will drop you.”
Lev barks a laugh. “You’re too late!”
At the bottom of the water tower, Hotch looks up, covering his brow with his hand as he attempts to find you and Tim. Derek argues with Spencer about whether or not someone should go up after you, but JJ remains in the car.
“Garcia,” she greets when her phone rings.
“Monica was taken into custody,” Penelope says. “She alluded to the fact that Lev didn’t know the entire plan and that she intended for him to die on that tower too.”
“He’s just a pawn?” JJ clarifies.
“Something like that. The tower is a death trap.”
JJ ends the call and rushes out of the car. “Hotch!” she yells over the thunder. “Stevens expects Lev to die up there!”
“I’m going up,” Derek decides.
“No, you aren’t,” Hotch replies. He looks up again, rain falling on his face. “We’re too late to change anything.”
“Then we should at least warn them!”
“Are you crazy?” Spencer inquires. “Cell phone usage is inviting a lightning strike. At their altitude and the current barometric pressure, they’d die before the line connected.”
“We can’t just stand here!” Derek exclaims.
“I understand you care about her,” Hotch says. “We all do. But… Whatever happens now is in her hands.”
Derek steps toward Hotch with his hands fisted at his sides. “If she doesn’t come down, it’s on us.”
“And we’ll all have to live with that. If- If she doesn’t come down.”
Spencer ducks and Hotch turns toward him before something hits the ground. Derek glances toward the sky and then retrieves it. He holds up two cell phones before tapping the screens to wake them.
“Either they’re alive and taking precautions or Lev is crazier than we thought,” he muses.
“Crazy is a generic term,” Spencer points out.
“Which the FBI frowns upon,” Hotch continues. “But this psycho has two FBI agents up there in a deadly storm, so let’s make an exception, Reid.”
You shake your hand after tossing your phone over the railing. Your gun has metal in it, and your back is against a giant steel plate, but limiting the dangers on your person seemed like a good idea when Tim whispered the suggestion. Lightning strikes in a nearby field, and Tim turns toward you, pushing his arm over your torso. It won’t make a difference when the storm is directly above you. Yet, the idea that he’s still protecting you after everything you’ve done and said makes you wrap your hand around his forearm.
“Tim,” you murmur. “If we die up here, I need you to know that I never meant to hurt you. Leaving was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I don’t regret joining the FBI, but I do regret leaving you without an explanation.”
“I never blamed you,” Tim replies. “I- I still-”
“Don’t,” you interrupt. “We can’t change it.”
“But I can say it now.”
You look into Tim’s eyes, rain running down both your faces. If you weren’t in immediate peril and convinced today is the day you’ll die, you might find it somewhat romantic.
“Let’s finish this,” Tim whispers.
You nod and step forward, raising your gun toward Lev.
“Drop it!” you demand as he pulls a long chain toward the rail.
“Help!” someone calls, his voice muffled.
“Nic?” you ask.
He hums, and you lower to your knee, giving Tim a clear shot of Lev. Moving forward, low against the tank, you round the valves on the northwest bend in the balcony. Nic comes into view, and your heart drops. He is wrapped in chains, and secured to a metal chair against the side of the tank. The metal rod you saw earlier extends into the sky, anchored between Nic’s feet.
“What are you doing?!” Lev screams.
He pulls the chain tighter before he lunges toward you. Another loud thunderclap nearly drowns out Tim’s gunshot. You stand as the world seems to slow, reaching forward as Lev stumbles back. He topples over the balcony rail, and you are several inches short of catching him.
The chain stops unraveling, suspending Lev as he hangs from the tower. Tim pulls the strap on his rifle so it’s against his back once more before he pulls you away from the rail.
“We have to get the rod down!” he reminds you.
You nod, letting the rain wash away the guilt of not catching Lev. He had every chance to surrender, and he was going to hurt you. Tim did what he was supposed to do, exactly what you would have done.
You pull the rod at the base, and it slides up through the grating of the balcony with a sharp screech sound. Tim takes it from your hands, tipping it over the edge just before a nearby tree cracks, struck by lightning.
“We don’t have time to get him freed and down,” Tim points out.
“Go,” you implore, holding Tim’s wet vest. “I can free him, and we’ll hunker down. You can get down.”
“I’m not leaving you up here!”
“Tim, if one of us-”
Tim raises his hands to your face, holding you as his eyes bore into yours. “I’m not leaving you.”
You nod slowly, then step back and search for the end of the chain. The metal links are wet, your hands are wet, and the air turns eerily still and quiet as rolling thunder echoes against the metal.
“I can’t find it!” you exclaim, your hands pushed into the metal.
Tim stands above you, his legs against your back while he begins pulling the chains up over Nic’s head. “This is going to hurt,” he warns.
“I don’t care,” Nic replies through chattering teeth. “Just get me out of here, please.”
You shift to reach the loops around Nic’s legs. You don’t notice that the chains have been filed while you pull the tightened chains over his feet. Sharp points line the outermost links, and they dig into Nic’s skin and yours.
“Go, go,” Tim exclaims as he drops a heavy bundle of chains onto the balcony.
You stand as Nic does, and he limps past Tim as he moves toward the ladder. Rather than following, you’re distracted by a black shadow in the other direction.
“What are you doing?” Tim calls.
“There’s a rubber mat,” you reply.
Tim’s eyes widen as he calls Nic back, but you turn to look at the sky.
“Tim,” you say.
“Yeah, we’re coming.”
“No, it’s too quiet.”
Tim moves to your side as Nic stands atop the rubber mat. He follows your gaze, but there’s nothing to see besides fields, sparse houses over the land, and trees swaying in the wind.
“Please don’t be a tornado,” you say to the sky.
Tim grips your upper arms and steers you to the mat. On it, you have a better – though admittedly not great – chance of surviving a lightning strike. The insulation will help, but it may not be enough.
“It’s not big enough,” you realize as Tim stops.
He looks down at your feet and Nic’s. There isn’t room for him to join you on the safer material, so you step back onto the metal.
“Get on it,” Tim demands.
Shaking your head, you make up your mind. Wherever Tim is, that’s where you’ll be. He puts his hands on your waist and attempts to push you back. Your tears mix with the rain, but when you lay your hands on his chest, he hears your breath catch as you cry.
“I can’t do this,” you admit, gripping his shirt at his collar.
Tim hesitates, then turns so that you’re facing the mat. He steps back onto it, then pulls you forward. Against his chest, he directs your legs so that they’re bracketing his. Your left foot is between Tim’s, and your right is against the side of his boot. Nic shifts slightly to make room for you. Only then do you notice the blood.
“Nic, are you okay?” you ask.
He nods, then raises his hand to his neck. “It’s just a scratch. The chains,” he explains.
You glance at your hands and notice that they’re similarly marked. Holding tightly to Tim, you brace yourself as the tower sways gently in the strengthening wind. Tim glances at his watch and cradles your head against him.
“It’s here,” he murmurs.
Closing your eyes, you pretend that you and Tim are hugging for any other reason. Try to pretend that tomorrow is promised and that Tim will believe anything you confess.
“In the car,” Spencer demands. “It’s not safe out here.”
“JJ, call the fire department,” Hotch requests as he climbs into the driver’s seat. “We need them here as soon as the storm passes.”
“Do you think they’re okay?” Derek asks, glancing out the window at the man hanging from the tower.
“That’s not Tim,” Spencer reminds him. “Different build; it has to be Lev.”
“That didn’t answer my question.”
Derek’s phone rings, but he sends Penelope to voicemail. The car brightens with the next lightning strike, and the bright red flash at the water tower’s highest point isn’t promising.
JJ covers her mouth while Derek drops his head into his hands. Hotch sighs, looking at the wheel rather than the tower beside them.
You groan before you open your eyes. Tim’s hand moves slowly across your lower back as Nic mumbles.
“I feel like I’m buzzing,” you murmur.
“Storm’s moving,” Tim says. “Do we try to get down on our own or wait for the fire department?”
You look at Nic, the most injured member of your party.
“I’m ready to go,” he answers. “I don’t ever want to see another water tower.”
You smile as you stand straighter. Tim holds you steady as he taps his boot against the metal platform. Nothing happens, so he drops his hands to your hips as you step off the rubber.
Nic walks beside you, but as you near the ladder, he stops walking.
“I- I can’t feel my legs anymore,” he says.
His eyes roll back before he tips, losing consciousness. Tim catches him, lowering him gently to the balcony.
“I guess we’re waiting,” you mumble as you kneel beside him. “No burns. Indirect strike, I’d guess.”
“You can head down if you want to,” Tim tells you. “I’ll stay with him.”
“And I’ll stay with you.”
Tim nods. He offers his hand, and you squeeze it tightly as you move to sit. He sits beside you, and you lean against his shoulder.
“I want to tell you something,” you say. “But not now. I don’t want you to think that I’m just saying it because we could have died.”
“Will you answer a question?”
“Sure.”
“Was there ever a chance of starting something between us back in LA?”
You consider the question, rubbing your hands on your pants. “No.”
“I didn’t think so.”
“Ask me another question,” you request.
Tim notices your constant movement and lifts one of your hands. He brushes his finger along your wrist as he looks at the cuts and darkening bruises lining your skin.
“Why did you kiss me at the BAU?”
As you breathe together, the thunder grows quiet even as the sky remains dark and rain falls in steady sheets.
“I acted too fast,” you answer finally. “I tried to seize a second chance that I don’t think was there.”
“Is that why you stopped talking to me after?”
“It scared me,” you admit. “I messed up before. It kept me up at night for years, Tim.”
“Me too. But… Never mind.”
Your hand is still in Tim’s when you see first responder lights approaching. Some look like police, two or three firetrucks, and at least four ambulances.
“Care for a question?” you ask.
Tim smiles as he answers, “Sure.”
“Is there a chance of starting something between us now?”
Leaning forward, Tim looks into your eyes and says, “There never stopped being a chance after you came back.”
Smiling, you whisper, “I love you. I’ve loved you since I walked into Mid-Wilshire again.”
Before Tim can reply, a police cruiser siren sounds once. Derek speaks through the loudspeaker to threaten, “If you survived, I’m going to kill you.”
“What’s he going to do if we didn’t survive?” Tim asks.
“Kill Monica.”
Tim purses his lips and lifts one brow. “Might not be the worst thing.”
“Derek,” you groan. “Thank you for caring about me, but my head is throbbing, so could we save the lecture for later?”
He stops talking, and when you think he’s about to stomp his foot and start again, he wraps you in a hug.
“Don’t ever scare me like that again, gorgeous,” he implores.
“I won’t,” you reply. “Although, it wasn’t on purpose this time.”
“Shh.” He tightens his grip on you, then steps back and salutes with a smile.
“Do you have a minute?” Hotch asks. “It’s not a lecture.”
You nod, then stand from your seat and join him at the back of the jet. Tim is in Los Angeles for a few days to work on the Monica case, and when he returns to Quantico, you have a lot to discuss. He isn’t aware of your new symptoms from being indirectly struck by lightning, but Spencer assured you they’re temporary.
“Are you okay?” Hotch asks softly.
“I’m… almost fine,” you reply. “That was terrifying, but I’ll be okay.”
“Well, you know the bureau offers counseling if you need anything, and I’m here, too.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“What did you tell Bradford on that tower?”
Your eyes widen, and you search for the right words. “Just some shared history stuff.”
“You thought you were going to die. In that situation, people tend to say something they don’t mean or speak the truest statements in their lives.”
“Yeah,” you agree carefully. “Lots of confessions, real and imagined.”
“So,” Hotch continues, crossing his arms. “Which was yours?”
“You’re a profiler, you tell me.”
Hotch shakes his head at your smile but moves his arms to lay a hand on your shoulder.
“Be sure he meant what he said before you do anything you can’t take back,” he advises.
“You think he would speak emotionally?”
“In the right circumstances, we all can. Even a stoic like Bradford.”
“Are you speaking from experience, sir?”
“This is me giving you advice, not an interrogation, agent,” Hotch replies.
You nod, hiding your smile. “Thank you, sir. I appreciate the advice.”
Hotch turns away, then looks over his shoulder. “One more thing. There’s a bet in the unit about whether or not you kissed up there, so maybe keep the specifics to yourself.”
“What do you think happened?” you ask.
“I know everything.”
“Even the art of romance?”
“I’m leaving now.”
You smile as you trail Hotch until you reach your seat. Derek watches you, then leans back in his seat and closes his eyes. JJ’s computer chimes before she tells you that Monica’s court date has been moved up.
“Bradford isn’t listed as testifying,” she adds.
“Is Lopez? Grey? Chen?”
“Yes, as well as Nolan and a few other officers from the division.”
“Then he’ll be there,” you reply. “Which means, Hotch, you may need someone to fill in for him and keep me safe.”
“You were a lot less reckless before daddy cop showed up,” Derek muses.
“Did you tell everybody about that?!” you exclaim.
He shrugs, practically admitting his guilt before he closes his eyes again. Tim texts you that he is staying in LA for a few more days. The following text, which says he’ll see you when he gets back, is the one that surprises you.
It’s just past 2 a.m. when someone knocks on your door. You roll over, pulling a pillow over your head. Unfortunately, the knocking doesn’t stop. You groan and retrieve your gun from your nightstand as you walk out of your room. At the door, you lean against it and press one eye to the peephole. Suddenly, as if you drank straight espresso, you’re wide awake and pulling the door open.
Tim’s hand raises to knock again, but he stops when you open the door and wrap him in a warm hug.
“Good morning,” he grunts as you collide with his chest.
“Morning,” you reply, your voice carrying traces of sleep.
Tim moves his right arm around your waist and carefully maneuvers back into your living room. He kicks the door closed behind him, drops his bag, and then notices your gun on the table by the door.
“Expecting someone else?” he asks, smiling.
“Not expecting anyone,” you reply, stepping back. Your hands remain on Tim's shoulders as you continue, “It’s a good surprise.”
“Sorry to wake you. I couldn’t wait to see you.”
“It’s fine. This one time.”
“How are you?” Tim asks, pushing your hair out of your face. He slides his fingers into your hair, pushing it up toward your roots gently. He watches your face as if he’s memorizing it, worshipping it. “Headaches gone?”
“How do you know about that?” you ask, tipping your head toward his hand. “Derek?”
“Spencer,” he corrects. “I got a lengthy message about letting you rest and not giving you a reason to be on your phone.”
“They’re good coworkers but they’re nosy.”
“They care about you.”
“Just them?”
Tim raises his other hand to your neck as he steps toward you. In the low light of your living room, only the streetlight outside illuminates your face and the space around you, and it’s as if you are the only people in the world. Tim looks at you like you alone matter. Like this moment is specially made for the two of you.
“They care about you,” Tim repeats. “I think I do a bit more than that.”
“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you how I felt sooner,” you say. “I… I know our relationship isn’t typical, but you deserved the truth.”
“I didn’t know, no, but I still would have fought for you. I didn’t know what I had until I lost it, and the decade I spent without you taught me that some things- that some people are worth fighting for.”
“You weren’t this nice to me as my TO,” you murmur, brushing your thumb over a scar on Tim’s neck.
He got it protecting you, although he yelled at you the entire time he was treated and bandaged. Tim shivers at your touch yet doesn’t shy away or attempt to hide behind the persona he wears to protect himself.
“What you said on the tower,” Tim says. “Ask me.”
“Do you love me?” you whisper.
“I fell in love with the idea of you the day we met,” he admits.
You recoil from his touch briefly, but he holds you close. “And then I realized that everything I felt, all of the bitterness and disappointment I associated with you, was because I wanted you, desired you, more than anything. I didn’t think I loved you because I’d never been in love like this before.”
“Do you love me?” you repeat, softer. As you step toward him, pressing your chests together, soft rain begins to fall outside.
“Yes,” Tim answers. “Of course I love you.”
His smile grows as you hug him. One arm wraps around your waist as the other remains in your hair, gently curling and uncurling his fingers. Using the hand in your hair, Tim tips your head so he can see your face. He leans forward and stops with a single breath between you.
“Who needs lightning when you’re here?” he jokes.
You roll your eyes and scoff. Before he says anything else, you move your arms over his shoulders and kiss Tim. It’s different than the kiss in Penelope’s office. This moment is slow, meaningful, and full of love, history, and new beginnings simultaneously. Tim lets his hand fall from your hair, trail over your side, and slip beneath your arm to hold your hip.
Tim takes slow steps to move you against the couch and then lifts you to sit on it. Once you settle, Tim breaks the kiss just long enough to take a breath, squeezing your hips as he breathes.
Diving back into you like you are oxygen at the bottom of the ocean or a safe haven in a lightning storm, Tim cradles your face in one hand as he splays his fingers across your back and holds you upright.
“Tim,” you say, repeating it several times before he presses his forehead against yours and lets you speak. “I meant what I said in the storm. That wasn’t my emotions. I’ve felt like this for a long time.”
Tim smiles. “Stop profiling this,” he grumbles before he lowers you onto the couch and hovers above you.
“There’s also a bet running about what we did on the tower.”
Tim lifts your head and moves your hair so it isn’t pulled or trapped beneath you. “Let them wonder,” he whispers before trailing kisses along your jaw and hairline.
“What have we got?” you ask as you enter the conference room.
“Wannabe Bonnie and Clyde,” Spencer answers.
You nod and sit beside Penelope, who narrows her eyes at you.
“What?” you whisper.
“You kissed daddy cop,” she accuses. Your brows raise, and she speaks up to add, “He came to see you as soon as he landed, didn’t he?!”
You look at Derek and mouth, You’re dead, but he smiles and blows you a kiss.
“In line with the theme,” Hotch says, drawing attention back to the case, “this couple is heavily armed.”
“Which our tactical sergeant would know something about,” Derek muses, smiling as he looks at the door.
You turn and see Tim standing in the doorway, wearing an FBI t-shirt.
“Thanks for coming, Bradford,” Hotch says. “We’re going to need backup for this one.”
“Of course, sir,” Tim replies.
After Hotch dismisses you, you wait until you’re alone in the room with Tim.
“Would telling them make the teasing stop?” he asks.
You lean against the table and cross your arms. “You’ve met them, right?”
“We could always pretend to hate each other.”
“Easier for you than me,” you argue.
Tim shakes his head as he takes your hand. He rubs his thumb over the nearly faded marks from the chains.
“We don’t have to tell them,” you say.
Tim’s brows raise as he asks, “You want to keep a secret from your team?”
“They’re outside the door.”
Tim glances toward the door as you stand from the table and pull it open, unsurprised when Derek stumbles inside as he tries to catch himself.
“Secret’s out,” you say flatly. “We good?”
“What about the bet?” Derek asks.
“Morgan,” Hotch warns.
“I mean, what bet? Who said anything about a bet?”
“My office is off limits,” Penelope says, pointing at you.
“Can we get back to work?” Tim asks.
“Excellent idea,” Hotch replies. Nobody moves, so he adds, “Now. Everybody.”
The room clears, and, this time, your team members return to their respective desks.
“Not you two,” Hotch says. “I had an idea to run past you.”
“Sure,” you answer, closing the door.
“Bonnie and Clyde.”
“Yes?” Tim presses.
“They’d be threatened by another couple.”
“Us?” you clarify, pointing between yourself and Tim.
“Only if it’s something you’d be comfortable with.”
You look at Tim, who tips his head toward you, giving you the final decision. It wouldn’t be much different than what you did in Los Angeles a few months ago or some of the lies you played into during your short time as a rookie. Besides, when else will you have a chance and an excuse to be that close while working?
You smile, and Hotch nods. “Pack your bags then,” he says. “You’re going back to California.”

FAQ!
Welcome to the first ever UVTALE FAQ post! here i'll be answering some basic info of the au, there will probably be another one in the future, or maybe not! who knows :)
so, what is it about?
Uvtale is an Undertale au where the the humans casted a spell on the underground that prevents any sort of non-monster magic source of light from reaching the caverns, which makes everything really dark and cold! that, plus the spell was very unstable causing it to corrupt.
when the spell was corrupted due to the powerfull(and forbiden) magic that was used, it created a dark thick fog that spread across the entire mountain. This fog is alive, and acts like a sort of hivemind. their objective is to get everything in the underground to join it and the only way to avoid getting infected by it is being in places that are lighten up!
is there anything that's inmune to the fog?
yes there are things inmune to it!
since the spell is made of human magic, human souls tend to be more resistant to it! humans themselves are not in danger of being affected by the mind control, however if a human soul is corrupted enough (with a lot of LV), the fog might try getting to them through the hate in their soul.
Human souls can also help cure monsters that have been infected by the fog, if exposed to their magic for long enough, the effects will ware off. depending on how much time passed since the monster was being mind controlled, there might be long term effects from it(lower stats, weaker soul, etc)
So, are humans living in the underground?
yes, to some extend! most of their locations are unknown, and the people who do know where they are don't like to share. human souls are valuable for multiple reasons.
humans usually prefer hiding from monsters. not all of them though, there are exceptions such as chara.
The Queen, Toriel, prefers to let them free. too busy with her own mind to take care of their locations. Not that she doesn't has an idea of where they are, but to her is none of her business (it is though)
What about the royal guard? how does it work?(+ loactions info)
the royal guard work mostly as search and rescue teams! of course, while still doing their duties to making sure everyone is safe and secured.
usually monsters get lost in the dark, which gets them exposed to the fog and eventually to get mind controlled. Most of them are located in Snowdin, since they also have a lab/shelter there, its convenient for everyone.
Waterfall is mostly unhabitable, as beautiful as it can be its extremely dark and dangerous, but there are rumors of a hidden village somewhere in it.
Hotland, even without lava, is very lighten up and overpopulated, since its one of the warmest places of the underground(as warm as it can get).
New home faces a similar situation with overpopulation
The dunes are a place that exists, remember this IS an uty au too! it is a very cold and desolate desert but also, it has one of the safest zones in the entire underground (the wild east town) this because of a certain human with a bright powerful soul that happens to live there..
-
and thats pretty much everything I can reply to for now, this post is an edited thread i made for twitter this morning with added extra things and better wording(i was very sleepy when i first made the thread whahah)
any other questions that have not been answered here(character related questions for example) will most likely be answered in lore posts! that I will begin uploading in due time(after Im done with commissions probably)
Thank you for enjoying UVTALE! it really makes me want to keep going with it :,) -Jewel

If you don't mind sharing, what happened to vanetta's ex Edmund and his new saintess gf?
oh boy, so, a LOT has happened here so BUCKLE UP.

(and here’s a picture of vanetta for context for the maybe 2 other ppl who will read this huge post, which i have tried to summarize)
TLDR: after vanetta “died” and was yeeted into time travel, edmund died and charlotte saved the world. but edmund got brought back… and he came back wrong.
but the full story is so much weirder than that:
the core conceit of this game is that we are time (and place) hopping every time the party levels up, and mostly this is pretty normal—someone who’s from an ancient time visits a future date and finds out their country no longer exists, someone from the future goes to an earlier time and is shocked by the severely lacking technology, etc etc
except for vanetta, who is not from the past or future. she is from a book series. and she has JUST discovered this.
our most recent time hop has taken us to a dystopian capitalist future that takes place in a big mall in outer space (think a combination of tron, zenon: girl of the 21st century, wall-e and other similar media), where our wizard comes from.
and as soon as we materialize there, vanetta is recognized as a “really high quality and authentic cosplayer” of, well. herself. the book series she is from (the briar path) is popular on a level that basically combines twilight, harry potter and the bible all in one. it is fantastically popular, but also pretty old, and also is continually getting remakes and re-releases and right now they are currently making a manga adaptation of it. and it has a very active fanbase that writes a lot of fan fiction. this is, somehow, incredibly plot relevant.
an npc shows vanetta the comic, which currently i think covers 2 of the books in the series, and it shows her being depicted as basically your typical shallow, unsympathetic villainess character. and it depicts her death: the moment when, on the ramparts of the palace she was meant to preside over, she is faced with an angry mob seeking her death on one side and the crown prince (edmund, her former fiance) and charlotte (the saintess, his new woman, who in the fiction of the book was isekai’d into the world of the briar path) on the other side. vanetta climbs onto the rampart and makes a big impassioned speech (aka a villain monologue) about how pathetic and horrible they all are and when charlotte makes a swipe at her, vanetta chooses to let it unbalance her, forcing charlotte to live on with the guilt of her death.
only, the real vanetta doesn’t die. she gets yeeted out of time and space with three other time travelers. and our story continues
anyway, back to present day, the manga adaptation has just reached the part of the series where edmund dies—something vanetta did not know about. but just because he died in the book doesn’t mean he died in real life.
see, edmund had some pretty devoted fans. and one of them, who thought edmund was robbed by the narrative, got into some ancient, evil magics and combining this with the immense power of FAN FICTION, he tried to bring edmund out of the novel and into real life, and in the process ended up fusing with him and also with a force called The Hunger, a roiling miasma of despair that was the ultimate evil in the novels.
and so they all fused together and became a new thing. a god. in fact, our yuan-ti paladin’s snake god. who uhh subjugates and eats all non-snake people. the creation of this god also uhh was a huge cataclysm that basically started the earth apocalypse that lead to everyone ending up in the sky.
vanetta has JUST managed to secure annotated copies of the entire series that include academic commentaries and notes on historical context and the first chance she gets she is reading them so hopefully i’ll get more info soon lol

Hello. This post was great. 🤩💕 Could you write a version where the children (Viserys and the reader's children) and Rhaenyra are yandere platonic to the Queen? Maybe they inherited this yandere behavior from their father Viserys. Thanks 🥰😍😘💖
Our love to you
Targaryen family x Queen!reader
warning : yandere behaviour, obsession, manipulation, blackmail,
Summary : The Queen was a woman held together by love, whose love for Viserys balanced on the royal crown and her children were her support. But children, they were the blood of the dragon through and through and a dragon, just like the king, will never leave the treasure alone.
info : I'm glad you liked it so much, Yandere Viserys is just cute, have fun with the ‘successor’ fic, I hope the kids are okay it was a bit difficult to develop the personalities out of nothing and thanks for the requests.
masterlist
The prequel
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Rhaenyra - The realm's delight : Rhaenyra the eldest child of Viserys and her stepdaughter, the first and eldest princess of the realm whom she had met in her prime and taken in as her own daughter. A Targaryen whose blood was tinged with dragons and fire, but also with goodness through her late mother Aemma who was a great support to her, a place she tried to fill as best she could. But like her father, Rhaenyra was aware of her power, she was the firstborn forever her father's favourite inside...something she didn't take full advantage of but the violet eyes saw behind the façade of her parents. ,,My chamber is always open for you dear," she told the queen, placing a hand on the elder's shoulder, the same gesture Viserys always used, a subliminal message, an insistence that they could both talk about anything. That the dragons of House Targayren were everywhere, that Rhaenyra only wanted the best for everyone and especially for her. She would often find herself with Rhaenyra on her dragon Syrax, not seeing the watchful gaze behind the violet eyes that watched her, telling Viserys everything he wanted to know. After all, it was love and care she would not be able to bear to lose a mother again and she would not allow it.
Baelon - The heir : The first-born son and heir to the crown, Prince Baelon is a few years younger than Rhaenyra but in no way inferior to her. He loved his family, his siblings and above all his parents, he was aware of his heritage, aware of his claim and aware that if the kingdom had to hold together it had to start with the royal couple. Violet eyes, dark but dragon-like, kept looking at his mother, he saw the pain, saw that he would be the only one who could take care of her and had to ,,I thought I would read for you" he kept coming to her in the bedchamber. He read for her, from poems to stories, while his hand kept going to the ring with the family seal. Small gestures that would prove successful, his conversation with her would become even more intense if she ever dared to leave the castle, even if it was only to Dragonstone. He was the heir and showing loyalty to his mother and honouring his father's wishes was what any good future regent did.
Alyssa - The singing Dragon : The image of her mother was reflected in the second princess of the realm, though her inner self was Targaryen, her outer self was the beauty of the queen. A young woman only slightly younger than her brother Baelon, but her manner was different, gentler and brighter, the best of her mother and the worst of Viserys. A voice that entertained the royal court and her parents in Valyrian, a voice that enchanted the whole realm and her mother, and a connection to dragons that came close to the greatest dragon riders. But her care and sweetness almost overwhelmed her mother, ,,I'll sing anything for you mother, take you to heaven I'll always be there for you" her daughter told her, drawing her into a gentle embrace. An embrace that was firm despite the sweet words, she loved her mother and no one would hurt her, she would sing to her forever if she had to but no one harmed the queen of the realm. It was an obsession that always made the king smile as he looked at his beloved wife and daughter. Alyssa's beloved mother seemed to belong only to her.
Aegon - The joyful : A Targaryen who was most like his father, a dragon of pride when he had to be, but rather someone who appreciated the pleasures of life in celebrations, alcohol and friends. A son who was one of the least likely to see her, whom she smiled at and encouraged whenever he slipped out of the castle with his friends and siblings to whom he was loyal. But above all a dragon who knew what his tears and gestures were worth, ,,Please mother...stay with me just a little longer" he often asked her at night to sit by his bed and tell him a story or sing to him. The tears that threatened to flow and the hand that sought hers was a mix of real and genuine, something he had seen in his father that he knew made him proud to follow the dragon's blood. But it was gestures that always worked, whenever she wanted to go to her children or her husband he kept her longer than necessary, he loved her care and concern it was only fair that he always got one.
Helaena - The dreamer : The dreaming Heleana, the image of a Tararyen with a gentleness and dreaminess that was unique. A princess who spent most of her time with her insects and stickers and Dreamfyre, always turning to her father when she had a dream that they would discuss for hours. A gift that could be as dangerous as it was merciful, but above all a gift that she always used to lift her mother out of desperate thoughts, ,,Don't worry about dragons mother, that's why insects are much more soothing" she always came to the queen to keep her company and show her the insects, embroidering and talking together with her. A calm yet possessive relationship, it seemed as if the queen could not conceive a thought without Helaena having seen it. A princess who always came to her mother when she had doubts about anything, something the Targayren could not and would not allow because it was best for her father, herself and the kingdom if the queen stayed in the castle out of pure love and care.
Aemond - The skilful : The penultimate prince, who in his boyhood years almost won over the queen with his devotion and emotion alone. Whose crying and outbursts of discontent could manipulate the queen so much that his siblings and even Viserys had to intervene at some point. A behaviour that only became more obssesive and praising when he realised that he got his mother's approval every time he won a tournament, every time he won a sword fight, ,,For you I will win the whole kingdom mother be sure of it" he swore to her and placed a kiss on the back of her hand whenever he entered a tournament and took up the sword. She had to come to all his fights, to all his trainings, she was there to encourage him, to praise him and again he took over every aspect of her life and would continue to do so, because he had not learnt otherwise from his father and siblings, he was a dragon and dragons took what they wanted.
Daeron - The loyal : Her last child, the youngest and sweetest of the princes Daeron a young prince whose love for his family was indescribable but most of all for his mother. He was especially attached to his second eldest sister Alyssa, clinging to her and doing his best to learn Valyrian in order to be even closer to the dragons, something that pleased everyone and especially Viserys, who kept referring to his last son as a little dragon whose loyalty was similar to that of his second eldest brother Aegon. He did everything to test his worthiness and his siblings loved him through and through, taking motions to their dragon whenever they could. But above all, he was the prince who had the easiest time convincing his mother, ,,Mother! Mother! Come on, I want to play, I've learnt something new, isn't that lovely?" he always came to visit her in her room and made her spend hours with him. His words and looks were so innocent that it could never be the dragon in him, no boy could be like the king, or could he?
Name ideas:
Taylor: Mason Gonzales
Tyler: Addison Gonzales
Ashlyn: Emery Blake
Aiden: Caleb Morgan
Logan: Liam Parker
Ben: Andrew Martin
Questions:
-Who do they secretly have a crush on?
-What’s their personality off cam?
-Who had instant chemistry during casting and got paired up as a result?
-Which two actors hang out the most off-set?
-Who always messes up their lines during serious scenes?
-Which actor is surprisingly introverted in real life?
-Who has the biggest fanbase among the cast?
-Who’s constantly filming behind-the-scenes content or TikToks?
-Who was known for pulling harmless pranks or playing practical jokes on their fellow actors?
I really love the fact that Ashlyn’s Actor has siblings (+ her older sister if fine as hell)
Ummm as you mentioned about Ben’s non celeb gf I do have questions about their relationship I kinda feel interested about their relationship I hope you made a quick comic about them of how they met or smth and get to know more about the girl
- Does the girlfriend ever get jealous of his co-stars, especially if he shares a lot of screen time with a female lead or when the fandom ships him with someone? How does he reassure her?
-How does she react when she sees fans approaching him in public, asking for selfies or autographs? Is she comfortable with it, or does it make her feel a bit like an outsider?
-Does she ever feel insecure about the attention he gets from fans or the media? How does he comfort her during those moments?
-Does he struggle to find time for their relationship with his demanding schedule? How do they balance time together?
-What do you think is the ethnicity of the girl?
-How did they first meet? Was it before he became famous, or did she meet him while he was filming?
Thats all! Sorry I yap alot I hope this will noticed
lol that’s a lot of questions! I’ve answered a few of the first ones in previous posts and I’ll try to answer the rest soon.
I liked the idea of giving more info on Ben’s bf so here’s some of the lore:
(Ben’s actor is just called Ben for now since I haven’t figured out a name for him)
maybe I’ll make a comic about their relationship in the future 🫶
"Tbh I was starting to feel a bit down about my blog and what I was putting out ( the eternal crisis on how to give full answers and opinions without being stupid, boring and annoying lol)"
OMG no way! Your blog is one of the best here! What i love the most is reading the analysis and meta from the users, there's always more information and good takes, and yours are always quite deep and insightful.
I would love if you share your opinions about Stuart as well. I feel like he is obviously more sanctified that he should be since he died young (like that insane quote from his mom saying that Brian told her that Stuart could have been the Beatles' manager, no way lol) and i feel his memory has been used to attack Paul, sometimes in a very unfair way. Like, i don't deny the teenage drama and jealousy that Paul felt about him but he *was* a shitty bass player and the band was Paul's future, he was allowed to criticized him not only for being John's new bestie. I also think John played with them both but i lack of your eloquence so i will love to read your take about it.
Hi anon! And the other anons!
Thank you again and to all the other messages I got, they were extremely sweet and really made my day. :)
From my inbox, it's clear you guys want to know about Stu and his role in the Beatles legacy. Well you asked for it and a novel you shall have. Be warned this might be the longest post I've done so grab like a drink or something.
A few disclaimers: I wish and had intended for this to be more of a deep dive into Stu as a whole person rather than just his relationship with John and Paul. Unfortunately I just didn't have the space to do it. If you want to know more about Stu I would highly recommend @eppysboys' blog which is the source for all things Stu Sutcliffe and where I got a lot of this info. Please check their stuff out. Also, I'm going to be a bit blunter on this than maybe I usually am because this topic has been irritating me for some time. Oh also I’m trying my best to answer a lot of asks in one post so please forgive if I don’t fully answer your specific ask about this!
Stu in a perfect world should be a fandom darling: an exciting cipher, a handsome artistic talent that died way too soon who had a major influence in the early Beatles style. It's like there’s this secret other James Dean looking mf Beatle hidden away to uncover, that's cool and he is cool! The problem is that he’s sort of becomes radioactive to talk about in a normal way due to how he's been portrayed and utilised in some biographies and fandom spaces, particularly those that have been infected by John Lennon aspirational boy bestie syndrome. As those types of spaces cannot seem to exist without tearing down Paul to prop John up as their special lil guy, Stu as John's other best friend has become the ideal heavy object to hit Paul McCartney over the head with. It's like a corrosive element, the minute Stu hits a Beatles bio, the biographer suddenly loses all training in objectivity and source work and starts waxing lyrical about 100 percent reliable never biased or wrong Saint Stu of Hamburg who died for our condom arson sins and that Paul McCartney should feel bad about every day of his life for not worshipping Stu and not accepting his own ‘place’ in life as John's just-some-guy placeholder best friend. I’ve personally seen so many posts and forums where Stu being mentioned leads to a legion of comments about how Paul could never have been Stu (correct both ways) and how John would never have even glanced at Paul for much longer if Stu had been alive. Sidenote: If you seriously think that the musical savant from down the road whom John went on to produce the most prolific song writing partnership in history with couldnt have kept his attention for long then I'm begging you on hands and knees to get your head out of the arse of your John Lennon body pillow and be serious. But anyway…
This boy bestie battle royale approach has in turn lead to a reflex reaction where Stu gets studiously ignored by other sections of the fandom as a precedent has been set that shining a light on him diminishes Paul and John's relationship with Paul. It's frustrating because if people weren't so keen to cut Paul out of his own story then we would get a much better nuanced view of every single person involved.
So let's put aside all of our defenses, cut the John Lennon loved one ranking system bullshit and lets look at the actual question here which is what was John and Stu's relationship really like and what did he mean to John?
John and Stu met at art college a year or so after Paul and John met. Up to that point John and Paul had their fun little codependant thing going on but Stu quickly became a huge fixture in John's life. Stu had things that Paul couldn't really offer at that point in time. John was at his heart a musician who aspired to be seen as an artist (he would later express surprise that he didn't become an artist). Stu was the passionate artist who knew tons about the art of the period that could teach and inspire John. Their creative leanings meant they could work on projects together and share art notebooks and poetry. (Including yes the one with anti-semitic story which I mention again as I believe it's an important thing to remember when it comes to both John and Stu and the culture of the time.) Stuart by the sounds of it was even writing a novel about John at the time of his death. They were fascinated and inspired by each other.
So, creatively they fired each other up but more importantly perhaps, Stu and John were peers. It's funny to think about when you see the Beatles later but at the time Paul and George were the kids in their school uniform coming to see their cool older friend at art school. That's an important divide. When Paul and George's parents insisted their kids do their homework and go to bed, John and Stu could stay up and talk all hours of the night, which they did. They also could rent a place together and spend long hours chatting (despite John moving out later after realising electricity cost money lol.) There's a different dynamic that the age similarity offered as well. Whilst Paul would later somewhat grow into this role, Stu could act as an authority figure to John as well as open up to John in a way you can really only do with your peers. Stu was the person John opened up to throughout Stu's life:
How long can one go on writing and writing like you. I now don’t really know who I’m writing to or why it’s quiet peculiar. I usually write like this and forget about it but if I put it in a little part of my [almost?] secret self in the hands of someone miles away who will wonder what the hell is going on or just pass it off as toilet paper. Anyway I don’t care really what happens because when I think about it, it’s so bloody unimportant – but what is important who has the right to say that this letter is not important and this is a something any way – anyway – anyway – yeah! I wonder what it would be like to be a cretin or something. I bet it’s gear. & how are you keepin Stuart old chap are you as ok – is life as good – bad shite, great – wonderful as it was or is it just a thousand years of nothing and coolness on and on and on. I think this is it Goodbye Stu don’t write out of – er what is it? well not because you think you ought to write when you feel like So goodbye (from John you know the one with glasses) ANYWAY BYE BYE see you soon I don’t know why I said that I remember a time when everyone I loved hated me because I hated them so what so what so fucking what I remember a time when belly buttons were knee high when only shitting was dirty and everything else clean + beautiful I can’t remember anything without a sadness So deep that it hardly becomes known to me so deep that its tears leave me a spectator of my own STUPIDITY + so I go rambling on with a hey nonny nonny nonny no
Extract from a letter to Stuart Sutcliffe from John Lennon, 1961
By lots of accounts Stu was gentle but firm when it came to telling John he'd gone too far. John references this aspect of Stu to Hunter Davies:
"I looked up to Stu. I depended on him to tell me the truth. Stu would tell me if something was good and I'd believe him."
The Beatles: The Authorised Biography (Hunter Davies)
In this way I kind of see Stu as a proto-Yoko. John was so insecure and uncertain about his grip on the world and reality that he relied on Stu to be his point of reference and guide. Paul did this too later and I think in Hunter Davies John mentions this, but not at this time period and not as much due to their competitiveness. This may be why some people saw Stu as the person that really understood John at this time period:
"During the turbulent adolescence that prefaced a turbulent manhood, hardly anyone knew Lennon as intimately as Stuart Sutcliffe. If they weren't exactly David and Jonathan, June Furlong, one of the life models at Liverpool's Regional College of Art, had "never seen two teenagers as close as those two."
The Gospel According To Lennon by Alan Clayson
Now this person likely never met John and Paul together but this is only one of many similar quotes and even Julia captain of John and Paul's friendship boat seems to agree there was a period where Stu dominated and Paul 'kept his distance' from the John-Cyn-Stu 'menage-a-trois'. But the friendship wasn't perfect and his position as John's ultimate best friend was never iron clad. This is best outlined by the shit they pulled when John convinced him to join on Bass for the Beatles.
Despite being John's best friend, Stu was teased and bullied:
"They argued as usual amongst themselves, but most of all they picked on Stu, the newest member of the group. John, George and Paul had been with each other long enough to know that rows and arguments and criticism didn't mean much. If it did, you just argued back. "We were terrible," says John. "We'd tell Stu he couldn't sit with us, or eat with us. We'd tell him to go away, and he did." At one hotel they stayed at, a variety show had just left. There had been a dwarf in the show and they found out which bed he had slept in and said that would have to be Stu's. They certainly weren't going to sleep in it. So Stu had to. "That was how he learned to be with us," says John. "It was all stupid, but that was what we were like."
The Beatles: The Authorised Biography (Hunter Davies)
Why John encouraged this I have no idea, maybe jealousy over Stu's looks and wanting to play people off each other? Things were tense in both Scotland and Hamburg, especially between Stu and Paul. As I said in my last post, the girls were fighting and it was mutual. Paul was mad for both fair and immature teenage-boy reasons. Stu could not be bothered with the bass most of the time and couldn't really play well and was only there as he was '(John's) best friend' (ouch for Paul). Paul conversely had given up higher education to be there and was sending lots of money back home. He also was dating the girl Paul fancied. Stu was popular with the new group and also did mean things like help John steal Paul's money when money was really tight for him. Paul in turn was a passive aggressive, jealous and mean. It all came to ahead in the punch up onstage which according to Spitz came about from Paul wanting money back and saying that Stu could borrow some from Astrid. Stu goes for him and reports vary from full-on bust up to embarrassing scuffle. Stu then goes to where Astrid and Paul's gf Dot are, demands Dot leaves and goes on a rant about Paul. Now all of this must be framed in the context of Stu receiving increasing brain damage from his condition that seemingly lead to mood swings and anger. Nevertheless, the mutual needling and anger, as well as John's refusal to do/say fuck all about it, especially given how protective John was of Stu, suggests that it wasn’t straightforward and/or John may have been playing some games to make both feel threatened. This would also make sense as to why we hear conflicting accounts of John and Stu being the centre of everything and everyone else in orbit AND John and Paul being the centre and everyone else playing catch-up, as well as John giving Paul the lead to take him round the Reeperbahn when John got dressed in the gorilla costume. (I know Paul may have just been the closest there but that always gave off bestie behaviour to me.)
(I did get an ask about how John and Paul's friendship survived it, I think it was damaged by Hamburg. When Paul got back home he got a job at a construction site and there's just a vibe of everything being a bit on tenterhooks. John also acts a bit weird at the period, not talking to anyone for a few weeks then making a lot of weird demands from Paul. I'm really not sure what to make of it.)
Even when he's back in Liverpool, John still writes long letters to Stu and vice-versa. I can't find it at all but I’ve read a really sad interview with John saying he missed his best mate and it's a shame that he's not with them. He had no idea at that point that Stu had already died of a brain hemorrhage at 21.
John is said to have gone into hysterics when he found out Stu had died. A lot of people who've spoken about this time (Aunt Mimi, his sister Julia, the Exsis) concur that at this point Stu was his best friend and the death shattered him. He even told Astrid he wished he could give his life for Stu’s. This is backed up by the fact that John never forgot Stu and his shadow lingered for the rest of John's life:
Stu was recalled in In My Life
Years later, after John composed the first of his truly poignant and heartfelt Beatles songs, "In My Life"—with its lines about "friends I still can recall/some are dead and some are living"—he revealed to me that the two people he had had uppermost in mind were myself and Stuart Sutcliffe. And then he stunned me with a statement that I'd never heard him address to anyone—least of all to another man. "You know, Pete," he said softly, "I do love you. But," he quickly added, "I loved Stuart as well."
Weird that Paul isn't mentioned surely you think that he would be mentioned if Pete was there too okay, okay my tin hat is going away this isn't the time
Pete Shotton, Nicholas Schaffner, John Lennon: In My Life
In 1965 John drew Stu on a postcard
He apparently said this about Stu prior to sending the postcard, prompted by an article about Stuart.
The card had been sent from Genoa mid-way through the Beatles' Italian tour. [...] But the conversation had become maudlin when I reminded him that he was going to talk to me for an article about Stuart. [...] In that sad telephone conversation before they set off for Milan, I asked him if he was happy: 'I'd be a lot happier if Stuart was still part of us,' he said, 'The Beatles would be complete.' And before he rang off he said 'Ill send you something.'
He also appears on the cover of Sgt Pepper
As mentioned, Stu gets mentioned in Hunter Davies in terms of wistfulness and guilt AND he gets a mention in John's insane 'if I were a homosexual' ramblings in early 70s. According to Yoko, John also wanted Yoko to write letters to him and didn't think it would be strange because Stu wrote letters to him.
I have a pet theory that as with a lot of things for John, his unresolved grief over Stu really came to the fore in the late 60s now that he had actually had a chance to sit down and think about things. I believe it was partially why he wanted Yoko to write letters and why he gets mentioned in the early 70s as a collaborator/best friend and not in 1980 where John only gives that credit to Paul and Yoko. I think with the cracks with Paul, John had started to think back on his old friend and guide and what advice he would give.
Stuarts presence is still felt throughout the seventies:
“He told me everything. He loved to talk about Hamburg. There were no secrets. It was the kind of life I never knew…. It meant total freedom. At his side always was Stuart, sweet Stuart. There wasn’t a time in John’s life when he didn’t think about Stuart. He spoke always of his love and respect for Stuart.”
Yoko discussing Stu in When They Were Boys: The True Story of the Beatles’ Rise to the Top by Larry Kane
Coming to grips with his death is also present in Skywriting
SEAN O’HAIRE: What happened to Stuart Cliff? DR. FISCHY: What happened was a full exchange of energy where it was not needed within the expression of your own self or in the energies involved around and about you. We cannot call it a happening. We’ll say it is an awakening, for in that way it has served an expression from the past to the present and to the future to where there shall be more of that incomplete vibration expressed to you in a more fuller understanding.
Skywriting by Word of Mouth, John Lennon
This isn't exhaustive but I think from all this it's pretty clear that John adored Stu, John grieved Stu and kept grieving Stu. Stu had a specific place in his life as a confidant that he tried to recreate with Yoko. At the time of Stu's death, he was John's best friend, probably slightly over Paul. Stuart had been able to be both a friend and paternal presence, a confidant and an artistic collaborator. His presence and loss was one of the foundational points in John's life.
But as we've been asked to play this stupid game and so many bios like to make a hoopla about it, were they at their closest ever as close as John and Paul were at their height?
No.
How do we know? Because John told us so:
" He [Paul] still is the closest friend I've ever had, except for Yoko, so I'm still close to him whatever goes on."
John Lennon to an interviewer, 1971
But Walrus! John just says shit! How do we know he isn't leaving out Stu because the press don't know Stu. Well true John does just say shit but this is at a time where John isn't the most glowing about Paul and he's had no problem mentioning Stu in this time period ('one of my best friends ever' would have made a similar point).
But Walrus again! If John picked Stu over Paul when they were young why wouldn't he be the boy bestie of all time, and why would John say that he was closer to Paul? Well, because of the environment and timings. Stu's death happened near the beginning of John and Paul's major bonding moments. If you look at their personal timeline, Paris, the Nerk twins, and getting signed happened just before Stu died. That's missing the major years of Beatlemania, Key West, LSD, Paul growing more into being John's peer and a load of other huge moments in their lives. It's like how John writes to Cyn in 1962 about wanting the house to themselves and not have Paul around all the time. Would you say because he feels closer to Cyn then that John in his overall lifetime loved Cyn more than Paul? No, because relationships change over time and theirs were no exception. (One thing to consider as well is that we don't yet have many letters between John and Paul during their Beatles years and earlier, probably because they were spending so much time with each other. We know a couple exist that Paul considers too personal for publication but I'm sure there are others. It's easy to understand what John felt for Stu as we have the letters, I think we would also have an easier time understanding what John felt for Paul if we had the equivalent of those.)
At the end of the day Paul was the man he believed he had a psychic bond with, the man he couldn’t shut up about, the man whom he’d conquered the world with with their endless collaboration, the man with a twin personality to him and according to John spent more time with throughout the 60s than he had with Yoko ever. To be frank if Paul had died in 67' I don't think this would have been a conversation.
As mentioned early, in early 1970s John elevates his partnership with Stu to his collaborations with Paul and Yoko but by 1980 he’s pretty clear that Paul and Yoko are their own category.
"I was saying to somebody the other day, “There’s only two artists I’ve ever worked with for more than a one night stand, as it were. That’s Paul McCartney, and Yoko Ono.” And I think that’s a pretty damned good choice!!"
John Lennon interview with DJ Dave Sholin, 1980
There are of course the what ifs. Would Stu still being alive mean that John was not as close with Paul? Maybe, highly doubtful though as the Beatles experience was so intense. If Stu remained a Beatle would John be as close with Paul? If Stu remained a Beatle he wouldn't be Stu so no. At the same time who knows what it would have been like if Paul and John were peers from the off? I said this to @the62ndbugsfan when it comes to Stu vs Paul (hi girl sorry i've made our chat a whole ass post lol) but to go a bit Wuthering Heights, soulmates are made as much from the earth as they are of the stars. What binds us is our experiences just as much as our personalities. There may be a universe where Stu and John took on the art world together or became inseparable bffs again after the Beatles disbanded, but it is not our universe. In this universe Stu tragically died and John and Paul chose to become Lennon/McCartney and artistically unite themselves forever.
Even going back to Stu's lifetime, I've said it before and I'll say it again I find it interesting that not only did John choose to go to Paris with Paul rather than pay to meet up with Stu somewhere but that they arranged to meet up with Juergen and nobody told Stu until they'd already gone. Stu was shocked and didn't know if it meant the end of the Beatles which is a pretty big thing for him not to know about. Why didn't John tell him if they're apparently still writing long letters? Was it because he really wanted to do this with Paul and didn't want to hurt Stu's feelings? And that's really the point I want to make here. Due to his trauma John was preoccupied with reinforcing ranking of relationships within his life. But the thing is friendship rankings are made up guidelines and the reality is far more complicated. You can have a designated best friend but feel closer to another friend at times, you can want to do one thing specifically with one friend and not the other for various reasons. You can (as I do) have more than one equal best friend. Friendship as with most relationships are in a constant state of flux and each friendship you have will give and mean a different thing, even if they are of similar value to you.
Paul may have ended up closer to John than Stu had been, but that doesen't make John's relationship with Stu any less special. Nor does Stu negate the significance of Paul. Whilst both fit into John's pattern of intense relationships and demands related to that, both had unique positions and meaning to him. Considering what I've gone into about John's closeness to Stu, it actually says something deeply, borderline unnervingly, intense about John and Paul that Paul pipped Stu to the post. Maybe it's time Beatles bios accept the fact that John Lennon just wouldn't be into them like that, stop using a tragically prematurely deceased young man as a prop in their jealous psychological warfare against Paul McCartney, stop perpetuating one of the most damaging games that John did to his loved ones and allow both relationships the space to shine and showcase the amazing talent that was the Beatles and those that surrounded them.
#if I wanted to be truly truly tin hat#I would say that Stu is the friend he recalls and still loves#but Paul is the one he loves more#but THATS TINHATTING NOTHINGs BEEN CONFIRMED ABOUT THAT SONG#I’m just side eyeing it respectfully#but don’t let the weird biographers win#don’t make two girl bosses fight like this#John had two hands you know?#john and Stu#john and Paul#really long post sorry#Submarine postbox#Ask#anon#ask me anything#Please look Stu up he’s super interesting#And more than just John’s tragic friend#Though bless him he was not meant to be a writer#That prose is PURPLE#Stu Sutcliffe
🦉Overview🦉
Athena is the Hellenic goddess associated most commonly with wisdom, war, weaving, and in modern times, education and knowledge. She was a goddess who occupied both masculine and feminine roles in a highly patriarchal society, standing outside the societal binary. She is a fascinatingly variable and nuanced deity who has adapted and persisted in the mind of western society until this day. This masterpost is in dedication to her.
“Through our investigation of [Athena’s] role within the pantheon, she has emerged as a power of technology and creativity who promotes creativity and order, but with another side to her power, that of the storm bringer and warmonger.” -Susan Deacy
🦉Athenian Festivals🦉
Athena’s main festivals were the Panathenaia, Khalkeia, Kallynteria and Plynteria. It is up to individuals to decide if and how to include these celebrations in their practice.
Panathenaia: The biggest festival for Athena taking place annually, but with a bigger version every fourth year. Mainly a festival with athletic, poetry and musical competitions.
Kallynteria and Plynteria: Sacred days centered around cleaning.
Arrephoria: A mysterious festival that took place at night and is theorized to have been a fertility rite.
Khalkeia: The festival of artisans, which celebrated Athena and Hephaestus.
🦉Family & Connections🦉
Parents: Athena’s father was Zeus (Except in Libya, where she was known as Poseidon’s daughter) and her mother was the personification of wisdom, Metis. In some sources she was raised by Triton alongside his daughter, Pallas.
Children: Athena had no children as a virgin goddess but she did adopt and raise Erichthonius, who later became king of Athens.
Retinue: Athena was often associated closely with Nike (Victory), an example being the famed statue Athena Parthenos, which held Nike in its hand. The aegis which Athena wore also contained the personifications Phobos (Fear), Eris (Strife), Alke (Strength) and Ikoe (Panic) as noted in the Iliad.
Companions: Pallas is perhaps the most famous of Athene’s companions, as the two girls grew up together until Athena accidentally killed Pallas and afterwards took on her name as an epithet. However, in the Homeric Hymn 2 to Demeter it is shown that Athena, Artemis and Persephone spent time together and were playing and collecting flowers before Persephone was abducted. The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus claims they were also raised together.
Heroes: Athena was a mentor of Heroes and had a hand in assisting heroes such as Herakles, Odysseus and Diomedes, but also Achilles, Bellerophon, Perseus, Theseus, Kadmos and Tydeus.
The entitlement some people feel over Luke Newton´s career is baffling to me. Like, people out here saying "Oh, he has not milked the success of Bridgerton enough, his time has passed" or "He played his cards wrong" is just... wrong. Like, I get it, compared to Nicola, in the past few months, she has been much more active on social media than him, but can you actually blame him? Yall saw one picture where he was clearly uncomfortable, running away from the paparazzi and destroyed him online. Then he went on a vacation after months of press (and God knows which auditions, jobs or fittings on the side) and made it seem like he was committing a crime. Then he posts about a trip to Spain and some of you go call the hotel to check who he was with. If I were him, I would not post anything online ever again, because there is no winning, is there? He commented on one of Nicola´s post and she had to delete the awful comments people left. All because of what? A picture taken out of context with a girl who is not Nicola. News flash, people are allowed to have other people in their lives, romantically or otherwise. And to the people thinking that he did it to disentangle himself from Nicola, what drugs are you on? Like, he was holding so tight to her the night before, so excited for the premiere of Part 2, always praising her and looking at her with love in his eyes, even when no cameras were on them. I bet if people had not haunted him on social media he would have posted bts, or shared funny edits but the toxic fandom made it impossible for him to do so in real time. Because, apparently, to some people, if he had posted about Nicola while not being officially together with her, that is leading them astray. Umm, what?
And then you have the idea that he is not working. Nicola literally signed off to do Magic Faraway Tree before Part Two and has a small role in it, and the rest of her work has been in fashion. He went to fashion shows as well. Both of them are signed to Season 4 of Bridgerton and from what we have heard, they have quite a big part in it. If it took them 8 months to do their season, I can, at least, see them being there for maybe 4 or 5 months of shooting. That is work. Going to rehearsals and fittings is work. They literally get paid for that. It is astounding to me that Nicola has no future projects lined up yet, same as him, but everyone is on his ass for the same thing he has been doing for years, work in private. Now, I am a shipper, I do believe they will be together eventually, but I genuinely do not understand how that has anything to do with people trashing him for his upcoming projects. He may not have found the project he wants to do or is waiting to share info. Also, I bet you Nic or him would have shared a picture of going back to set already if some fans weren´t analysing pixels on screens.
I do feel like there is a double standard here, because if Nicola had done the same, gone on vacation or been photographed with a random guy, everyone would have been like "Good for her, etc.". She gets on the Top 100 List for, honestly, being more present online with the work she does, but there are so many people who do great work who are not and will never be on that list. If Luke had gotten on it, some people would be so mad at him, I just know it.
I just miss them together and I have to blame the toxic fans for not seeing them together anymore. I do not doubt they have been in contact since, I mean, this whole ordeal happened because we are so obsessed with their connection, they must have talked about that infamous day, but also, I think some fans are creating stories of them not talking or growing apart that are just hurtful. Even before the world tour, they did not see each other every day, they do not have to speak every day for them to have a great bond. They simply cannot share it online anymore or, at least he can´t, because people over dissect every thing, even if it is just a smiley. Taylor Swift was framed with the whole Kanye thing years ago and she disappeared for a year. She was still doing stuff and seeing friends but we just never knew about it. And I get it.
It hurts me so much to see a genuinely nice and kind guy who did an amazing job as Colin get so many negative comments over nothing. Every time Nic does something, people throw it directly in his face. Oh, he was not at the Emmys. Oh, he was not at a fashion show. Maybe he does not want to be?! Maybe he couldn´t? Does Zendaya have to be everywhere with Tom Holland? Like, what?!
There it is, the Big Tsudoi Post!
I reordered by theme and translated claims that were originally compiled on this page. Said page was edited with time, some info reworded or removed, so I used the wayback machine to make it as exhaustive as possible. I've read more facts browsing boards, and I might add them to this list in the future. But this page is the most well-known, and the facts listed here are what comes up most often in discussion and fanworks.
What is tsudoi? It just means meet-up, and it refers to the fan gatherings with the author of Rakuran, Amako Soubee, which used to occur every 2 years. What's relevant here is the Q&A and discussions with the author that led to plot points, trivia, bits that she hadn't included in the story yet or can't include at all, being mentioned during those meets. None of these meet-ups were recorded, so all the info we know about them comes from word of mouth, forum messages, and blog reports. As such, these facts should be taken with a grain of salt, and while a lot of them turned up to be canon (either in the manga, anime, or musicals) in the long run, they are not canon. Consider them food for thought for possible development and lore for the characters if you want, or just context for discussion and fanworks you might encounter in the fandom. There haven't been any such meetings in a good decade, so you'll notice a lot of that info is obsolete or eventually became canon. Additionally, while there's a lot of overlap with the anime, these concern the manga.
Under the cut, you'll find my translation. The text in black is directly translated from the people who reported those facts, and I tried to offer context and additional information in blue text.
Ninjutsu Academy
In general
Among the students of Ninjutsu Academy, there are orphans other than Kirimaru.
In Ninjutsu Academy, students keep the same class and same teachers for six years.
Uniform colors do not depend on the year, meaning that the 1st year will keep the criss-cross and circles patterned uniform until graduation. This was retconned / not true for the anime and musicals. Flashbacks showed the current sixth years wearing the blue patterned uniform in their first year, and the purple one in their fifth year.
Tomesaburou, Sakubei and Kazuma were established as mob characters at first, but the author made them join the main cast after a group of fans begged her to. It’s funny when you look up discussions about this, there’s a lot of anti-fujo sentiment going on because it seems those fans were from a BL doujin circle. Some people claim they nearly harassed the author about giving these 3 bigger roles.. err… I assume Amako Soubei is grown up enough to decide by herself…
There are kunoichi upperclassmen too, but these characters won’t appear or the cast would get too out of hand.
The family situation and number of siblings of upperclassmen (except for Takamaru) hasn’t been really decided yet. Nowadays Tomesaburou, Koheita, Heisuke, and Shuichirou’s family situation are known in canon. Saburou’s family background is mentioned within tsudoi, and his name implies he has two older brothers. (the characters in ‘saburou’ means ‘third son’)
It’s a coincidence that “Taira” no Takiyashamaru and “Minamoto” Kingo ended up in the same P.E Committee. Sensei said she didn’t think about it at all. “Taira” and “Minamoto” are two major clans from Japanese history, whose rivalry would cause the Genpei War, concluding with the fall of the Taira Clan, the victory of the Minamoto Clan, and the end of the Heian Period and beginning of the Kamakura Period.
Classmates share a bedroom in the dormitory. Monjirou and Senzou, Chouji and Koheita, Tomesaburou and Isaku, Saburou and Raizou, Kihachirou and Takiyashamaru are roommates. Has been canon for a long time now! 31-69 explains why Saburou and Raizou are rooming together without their classmate Hachizaemon.
1st years
Rantarou is kind, so he won’t be able to perform assassination and such, and won’t become an elite ninja.
Just like his father, he will become a half low tier ninja-half farmer in the future.
Kirimaru lost his parents in the war, and was picked up by a certain monk who raised him until he entered Ninjutsu Academy.
Kirimaru used to have an older brother.
Kirimaru’s spring clothes were originally Doi’s. Doi cut his clothes and patched them up to fit Kirimaru.
Kirimaru is 140cm tall.
Shinbei’s future is not decided yet.
He might drop out in the 4th year because he has to take over his family business.
In a more recent meet-up, Shinbei dropping out was retconned, and instead all of the 1-ha class will graduate together. (Since Doi-sensei and Yamada-sensei are in charge of them!)
Shouzaemon will become an anaushi ninja, acting like a relay of information for everyone. Anaushi refers to ninja infiltrating a given space by living a regular civil life with a regular job, gaining information by earning the enemy’s trust over a long amount of time. This is why ninja have to learn many skills and crafts, to assume different identities and work different jobs. Senzou takes a pottery class because of this in 18-43, and there is such a ninja in 24-66.
Rantarou, Kirimaru and Shinbei always make sure to give the best seats to the teachers, because “it’s more important to be a polite person than a top student.” This refers to an aspect of Japanese etiquette where everyone is expected to know their seating positions in a given room based on social hierarchy. The most important people will sit the furthest away from the entrance door into the room (or into the most comfortable seat). In a tatami room of feudal Japan, this would be the warmest place, and also safest in case of attack. I assume this works as Rankirishin’s justification for sitting closest to the door in the classroom!
The “The lord who visited me last night~” song that Rantarou and the others sing is actually pretty suggestive, but they still sing it since they don’t understand the meaning of the lyrics :
From volume 42. Doi-sensei is blushing and saying “Come on, now…” Phonetically, the kids are singing: “Yufubekita yobahidono akai fundoshi otoshita Otoshitayara wasuretayara Mata koyouto oitayara” Written properly, it becomes, and is translated as the following: 昨夜来た夜這い殿 The lord who visited me (a woman) last night, 赤い褌を落としていった Dropped his red loincloth. 落としたやら、忘れたやら、 Did he drop it, did he forget it, また来ようと置いていったやら Or did he leave it behind so he can come see me again?
Danzou does not usually wear pants, but he carries a pair around with him.
Maybe due to the influence of his parents, Sanjirou might have some sixth sense when it comes to the supernatural.
Tsurumachi Fushikizou’s “So thrilling!” catchphrase comes from a pair of older sisters being suspected of a crime in Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot. This doesn’t specify if it’s from a novel or the script of a TV adaptation, and older sisters being suspected of a crime in a Hercule Poirot story does not ring a bell, sadly.
The 1st years’ uniform is flashy so that in case of emergency, the teachers can find them easily. Contradicting the retconned fact that uniforms don’t change by year.
The Equipment Committee stinks of pee because the 1st year members often pee their pants. In the anime, Heita is the sole responsible of this. I'm pointing fingers.
Underclassmen
Shirobei is stupid enough to get yelled at by even Koheita. (ow)
Tounai’s front bangs aren’t curly, it’s bed hair.
Because of bad luck (and being forgotten), Kazuma’s name wasn’t properly introduced. In the anime, he introduces himself in 16-11 after his fellow committee members ask him “Who are you again…?”
4th years
Kihachirou thinks of Takiyashamaru as trash. Kiiiind of retconned with 32-61.
Kihachirou’s grades are average.
Takiyashamaru will find an early death.
5th years
Hachizaemon’s quirk of going “Oho!”, comes from a line spoken by Mifune Toshirou’s character Kikuchiyo in the movie Seven Samurai, pronounced as he was watching approaching enemies. Timestamp is 2:29:55. I think. Kikuchiyo makes a lot of funny noises.
Hachizaemon is a natural optimist.
Heisuke was modelled after what Doi Hansuke would be like in his younger days.
Heisuke is 165cm tall, the same as Monjirou. Hachizaemon has a bigger build than Heisuke.
Heisuke is an airhead. The original text says 天然キャラ tennen kyara, literally an “airhead character”, but when a real person is called a tennen kyara it means they are Pretending to be an airhead for attention/to be cute/etc. I assume OP meant it as in a character who fits the “tennen” trope. Tennen evokes an airhead personality but also someone who goes at their own pace, is eccentric, has trouble reading the room, etc.
Heisuke has “excellent grades”, a “sharp mind”, and is “accomplished at both the pen and the sword”.
Heisuke is a better student than Kanemon, but Saburou is a better student than Heisuke.
Raizou and Saburou will find work in the same castle as sounin, showing effort and success. 双忍 sounin, literally “a pair of ninja”, or ninja working together! Love wins.
Saburou’s actual hair is silky straight. On day offs, he walks around town maskless, and no one recognizes him.
His father is alive and well, and is also a master of disguise, apparently even more skilled than Saburou.
Even though some of them weren’t introduced into the story yet, some 6th years sneak out at night to meet with girls. They get in trouble if teachers catch them.
Sensei looks disappointed that Hachiya Saburou’s name is spelled 蜂屋 hachiya in the anime, and would like it to revert back to 鉢屋 hachiya somehow.
Hachiya might be a discriminating word against burakumin in some regions?
The name 鉢屋 Hachiya was taken after the real life Hachiya-shu ninja clan. The original poster seems unclear on this, so let me add context even though it’s a bit long. This is a huge speedrun and burakumin has a complex history which deserves better than being taught through ninja cartoons, so I really urge you to read about them. In the anime, Hachiya is spelled with the characters 蜂 hachi (bee) and 屋 ya (seller, store, house). Hachiya with that spelling is also the name of a variety of persimmon. In the manga, Hachiya is spelled with the characters 鉢 hachi (bowl) and the same 屋 ya (seller, store, house), and has a richer history. Burakumin are historically stigmatized people in Japan. Back in Muromachi, they would live separately from the rest of society in their own settlement, and were considered lesser due to the jobs they occupied. These mostly involve work deemed “unclean” by Buddhist teachings, relating to blood, rot, and death: they were famously executioners, butchers, and leather workers. It also includes popular, “vulgar” entertainers, opposed to noble entertainment such as noh theater. 鉢屋 hachiya (with the “bowl” character) in relation to burakumin refers to followers of Kuuya’s teachings. Kuuya was an itinerant monk involved in “unclean” practices, such as burying the dead or praying while dancing for the people. His religious dance, nembutsu odori, found more practitioners in the San’in region (North-west of Hyougo Prefecture), living secluded in their own villages called Hachiya. These people worked with bamboo to craft items such as tea whisks, but were marginalized due to their dancing performances. They went door-to-door chanting prayers and making sound by tapping a bowl, and this gave them the nickname 鉢叩き hachitataki (who hits a bowl) or 鉢ひらき hachiaraki(who presents a bowl). Like this, hachiaraki became synonymous with “to beg for money”. 鉢屋 hachiya (still with the same “bowl” character) also refers to a group of entertainers in the same region turned ninja associated with the Amago clan during the Sengoku period. They’re famously known for taking Gassantoda Castle (Izumo Province, nowadays Shimane Prefecture) with an extravagant scheme involving a spectacular parade of dancers and musicians passing through the main gate of the castle, with weapons hidden under their clothes. The ninja who led this attack was named… Hachiya Yanosaburou!
6th years
According to the meet-up in 2006, all the sixth years except Isaku come from a background of the Koga school of ninjutsu. When this was stated, Tomesaburou was still a background character and not properly established, so his background is unclear. The school of Koga is a type of ninjutsu from the Koga region (now Koka City, Shiga Prefecture). The Koga region had sou, villages that were allowed to self-govern (sou are mentioned in Nintama movie 2) in exchange of helping out the local Rokkaku Clan during wartime. They specialized in guerrilla warfare and handling of medicinal herbs and poison, and after retaking Koka Castle from Shogun Ashikaga to the Rokkaku Clan, they started working as ninja for said Rokkaku Clan. This would be pretty modern history by the time Nintama takes place, making the sixth years’ family, except Isaku’s, having a recent history of being farmers/samurai mercenaries recently turned “professional” (in Nintama terms) ninja. Interestingly, we don’t know the sixth years’ family situation in canon, except for the fact Koheita has an army of siblings living in a household large enough to belong to the samurai class (31-65), and that Tomesaburou has two older brothers that are warriors, making him likely to be samurai as well (30-34)
6th years ranked by height:Chouji > Koheita > Tomesaburou > Monjirou > Isaku = Senzou.
Even though some of them weren’t introduced into the story yet, some 6th years sneak out at night to meet with girls. They get in trouble if teachers catch them.
Senzou is the most popular among the town girls. Isaku is the most popular among kunoichi, because he’s easy to deceive.
Among the 6th years, Senzou has the best grades. Isaku has the worst ones.
Koheita is so bad at studying people wonder, “how did you even make it to the 6th year?”. But because of his bad luck, Isaku’s grades are still worse overall.
Koheita has had that kind of personality since the second year. Kind of retconned? He’s shown being his cheery ikedon self back in 1st year in 30-33.
Chouji used to laugh a lot as a kid, but gradually stopped as he got wounded while practicing using the jouhyou rope dart, because the scars on his face hurt him. Also shown in 30-33.
Chouji might be an eccentric person, but he’s kind.
Monjirou has been acting as a hardcore gingin ninja since he was little.
Monjirou’s left and right eyes are different shapes. One is pine-nut shaped, the other almond shaped.
The speech Monjirou makes before and after his meal to pay respect comes from Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei(?) or some other very famous temple (I[OP] can't remember exactly). This refers to vol 42 of the manga. In the anime, he recites this speech in 16-56. OP says they don’t remember well, but Enryakuji is a very likely candidate as it’s the head temple of the Tendai sect, and this speech comes from Tendai meal etiquette. As found on Tendai’s website, here’s the complete speech: われ今幸に、仏祖の加護と衆生の恩恵によって、この清き食を受く。つつしんで食の来由をたずねて、味の濃淡を問わず。その功徳を念じて品の多少をえらばじ。いただきます。 I am now blessed to receive this pure food, granted by the divine protection of the Buddhas and the grace of all living beings. I will humbly reflect on the origin of this food, regardless of its rich or mild flavor. I will pray for its merits without thinking about the quantity. Thank you for this meal. Monji omits the “granted by the divine protection of the Buddhas and the grace of all living beings”, but otherwise recites it word for word!
Monjirou and Tomesaburou often disguise themselves as Rokubu (I[OP] don’t know the kanji spelling, but it’s pronounced rokubu), itinerant monks who travel to offer copies of the Lotus Sutra in 66 different temples. But even while in disguise, they can’t stop bickering. Over things such as whether to take the right path or the left path, etc. OP spelled it right, it’s 六部 rokubu. As they explained, they are monks going on a pilgrimage across the country to offer copies of the Lotus Sutra, the most important scripture in Buddhism, to 66 temples, looking to expiate their sins.
Monjirou and Tomesaburou make good teammates, and when push comes to shove they are able to work together like in the Sonoda Village arc.
Tomesaburou is regarded by fans as handsome, but Sensei didn’t particularly try to draw him in a cool way. But while trying to keep his face consistent with the profile that appears in volume 22, he ended up looking handsome.
Tomesaburou might be manly and handsome, but he’s stupid.
Tomesaburou gets caught up in Isaku’s bad luck because they are roommates.
Tomesaburou and Isaku’s bedroom is split in two. The front of the room is Isaku’s area (that is turning into a small infirmary), the back of the room is Tomesaburou’s (that is turning into a small equipment storehouse).
Their room is the most cluttered with their respective luggage, so it has been divided in two.
Since Tomesaburou’s side of the room doesn’t have an entry door, there’s a little corridor made with a partition screen on Isaku’s side at the front of the room, leading to the back.
As a consequence, Isaku’s area is smaller than Tomesaburou’s. His part of the room being more narrow is also because of his bad luck.
Whether other students partitioned their room the same way or not is unknown. (Or rather than unknown, she worded it more like “it’s not decided yet”.)
(Seemingly from a more recent report.) All the sixth years seem to have a lot of clutter due to their respective committee, so their room is partitioned as well.
Isaku’s name comes from the baptismal name of one of Sensei’s friend, “Isaac”.
Someone asked why Isaku often trips on his feet or into pitfalls, and was told that “He might have a bad leg.”
In the first drafts, instead of being known as the Unlucky Health Committee, it was known as the Poop Committee, so Isaku wasn’t the Unlucky Committee President but the Poop Committee President.
Isaku caring for others comes from an instinct typical of those involved in medical care.
After graduation, faithful to the mentality of the Health Committee, Isaku becomes a “battlefield doctor” who treats people without taking sides. Kinda like Doctors without Borders.
Isaku’s weapons are drugs and poisons, but he can use weapons like swords. He doesn’t seem proficient at using any specific weapon (apart from drugs), as he’s shown using different ones in every fight scene ; swords, bandages, …pebbles…… But he’s also shown having interest in getting better at the sword in 27-13.
Staff
Doi-sensei’s personality is unfit for a ninja. Same for Isaku.
To Doi-sensei, cheese feels the same as nerimono (fish paste products), so he can’t eat it. After the Heian period, due to the rise of the samurai class, the need to transport people and supplies, and war in the larger sense, raising horses became a priority over raising cattle. People didn’t consume dairy anymore until the late Edo period where it was regarded as medicinal food, and it only became an everyday food during Meiji. Who the heck tried to feed Doi cheese? Castella-san’s cheese harassment episode when…
Doi-sensei is 175cm tall. Studies of remains from the early Edo period suggest that the average height of people was 157cm for men, and 145cm for women. Since Nintama takes place before Edo, it makes Doi an exceptionally tall person for the times.
Yamada-sensei recommended Doi-sensei as a teacher to Ninjutsu Academy. Shown in 32-64.
Doi is from a powerful family in the Seto Inland Sea, which fell in the war.
Doi's father was named Tokikuni, and he was a person of character.
He was killed in a sneak attack by someone named Sadaakira.
Just before passing, Tokikuni told Doi “Do not avenge me”. Doi’s backstory is based on Hounen, founder of Jodo Buddhism. It ended up being explicitly mentioned in vol 50. Hounen was born in a powerful clan in Mimasaka province (now Okayama prefecture), and his father, Uruma no Tokikuni, was a military chief who was assassinated at night by a warrior named Sadaakira, sent by the emperor to govern the province. In the manga, Doi’s backstory is merely referred to through Hounen’s own story. It’s kept vague how similar the two actually are. In Ninmyu 12, the father entrusts baby Doi to a servant, so there is no “do not avenge me” bit. The servant runs away but is killed by Kaentake ninja, who pick up Doi and raise him under the name Yogiri. Later, when he learns Kaentake killed his family, Doi runs away, and the story becomes similar to the anime where he is found by the Yamada family.
After the current 1-ha class graduates, Doi will quit teaching and open an orphanage.
Kirimaru, now independent, will sometimes come to help care for the kids.
A Komatsuda fan once told the author “I’d be happy to see him return as an office worker [for the school] or something”, to which the author replied “That sounds fun” and eventually made it canon.
Tasogaredoki Castle
Currently, Tasogaredoki is the strongest antagonistic ninja army.
There’s a ninja village in Tasogaredoki Castle.
Zatto is 180cm tall. Like I said earlier with Doi, that makes him Extremely tall for the time period.
Zatto has between 50 and 100 men under his command. (At first, Sensei said 100 men, to which a fan reacted like “Huh?! So many?!” in surprise, so she lowered it to 50.)
While doing his bandages, Isaku saw Zatto’s unmasked face.
“He might be covering burns?”, Sensei said. Confirmed in volume 50.
After the accident that caused Zatto’s burns, his engagement was called off.
That accident happened when Zatto saved Sonnamon’s father. Shown in 32-63.
Zatto is deaf in his left ear. This is reflected in the second movie, when Zatto reports information to his lord on Jinbei’s right side, but then has to turn to his left to listen to Jinbei’s reply.
Kousaka was Zatto’s chigo. Chigo mostly refers to children left in Buddhist temples to receive an education from monks. Because of the sexual exploitation they could be subjected to in exchange for that education, they are portrayed in art and described as graceful, attractive young men often dolled up like little girls. As far as we know Zatto doesn’t come from a specifically religious background, so his relationship to Kousaka might have been that of chigo and master in the secular sense, so that of a wakashuu (“young folk” ; prepubescent boys considered genderless/not men yet) and a samurai master who offers him apprenticeship, be it in academics, religion, martial arts, etc. Those were purely contractual relationships, supposed to end once the boy comes of age, and weren’t necessarily sexual. …But sexual relationships were prevalent enough that the samurai’s sexual practices with young boys has a name, wakashuudo. As for the nature of Zatto and Kousaka relationship, nothing is specified canonly.
Zatto’s subordinate, Moroizumi Sonnamon, got his name when Sensei told herself “Isn’t something like that good?” Sonnamon’s name is spelled with the kanji characters 尊奈門 sonnamon, individually meaning 尊 son, respect, 奈 na, quince fruit, and 門 mon, gate. I already explained the etymology of his name in another blog post. “Sonnamon” spelled in the phonetic hiragana alphabet, そんなもん sonnamon, means “that’s how it is”, “that’s like that”, “that’s it”... So when she said “Isn’t something like that good?”, it sounds like そんなもんでいいんじゃないの, sonnamon de iinja nai no?, or “Isn’t “sonnamon” good?” .
Sonnamon is 19 years old.
Sonnamon is Zatto’s subordinate number two, and Zatto’s favorite.
Hyougo Navy
The Hyougo Navy crew is modeled after the real Murakami Navy. They were devoted to war lords and close to the samurai class. Suigun directly translates to “navy”, but is an historical term. It refers to groups of pirates robbing goods meant as official taxes, who eventually gained enough power and influence to control a given area at sea. They became sort of “samurai of the sea” when daimyo (feudal lords) contracted them to provide security, transporting goods, set up checkpoints, collect fees, etc. The Murakami Navy operated in the Seto Inland sea, the body of water separating the islands of Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu.
Atoi is tall because he’s Gilyak. His name comes from the word “atuy” in Ainu language, which means “sea”. Gilyak, or Nivkh people, are an indigenous ethnic group living in the northern Sakhalin Island (north of Japan) and the adjacent Russian coast, by the river Amur. In the Muromachi period, they traded with the Chinese, Japanese, and Ainu people. Ainu are another ethnic group inhabiting the north of Japan, Kuril Islands, and southern Sakhalin Island. The Ainu language is written either in latin characters or Japanese katakana alphabet, making the word for “sea” spelled atuy or アトゥイ. Atoi’s name is written 網問 in Japanese, the kanji characters are used for phonetics rather than meaning: 網(a), 問(toi).
Suiren, the dedicated swimmers/divers of the Hyougo Crew, also perform during battle. This ended up being shown in 31-57, Shige and Miyoshimaru dive to stick explosives under enemy ships.
Whales were luxury goods, offered as a valuable present.
Whale fishing was used as practice for naval battles.
Yoshimaru has a woman in every port.
Kagerou’s eye was shot with an arrow, and when he pulled it out both the arrow and eye came out together.
Kagerou suffers from landsickness (oka-yoi) and vomits going bluuurgh (gerogero), so that’s why his name is Kagerou.
Pirates who got landsick were an actual thing. It is an actual thing for sailors, yes. It’s called Mal de débarquement syndrome.
Kameko will inherit the Fukutomi family business.
Kameko admired Chouji, but will marry Onigumomaru.
Onigumomaru will manage the import and export of goods, while Kameko will work staying on land.
Sekibune are fast, but not sturdy. It can reach a speed of about 16.2 km/h when rowed by hand. Given that the current ships of the Japan Coast Guard can reach roughly twice that speed, achieving this speed with a hand-rowed boat is impressive.
Atakebune have high defense, but are slow. About 2 knots. Sekibune and Atakebune are two types of warships used during the Sengoku period. Atakebune is the larger one. 2 knots is about 3,7km/h.
The price to hire pirates as bodyguards is absurdly high. They’d ask for something like ⅓ of the cargo one is carrying, but there’s no substitute for safety.
In the Hyougo Crew, Yoshimaru is the first to attack during battles. Explained in 20-79, part of the Hyougo Crew Audition Arc.
Others characters
After Doi-sensei ruined the Yamada family’s picnic, little Rikichi felt “damn him!” since he was a cheeky kid. But later, just like how an elementary school student grows affection for his teacher, he became attached to Doi-sensei. Doi-sensei crashing the Yamada’s picnic appears in 30-35.
Rikichi wasn’t a student of Ninjutsu Academy.
A long time ago in the rakuran doujin world, it was believed that Yamada Denzou gave Rikichi a spartan education, this fact being apparently written in an answer letter to a fan by Amako-sensei.
But it’s actually his mother who taught ninjutsu to Rikichi. Shown in 32-62.
Rikichi goes through a seriously turbulent phase in his twenties. The original wording uses the verb 荒れる, “to become violent, out of control”, “to get wild”, “to come to ruin”, implying physical and mental instability.
Rikichi will leave a child he got from making a housemaid pregnant in Doi’s care.
That child will look a lot like Rikichi.
They had a talk kind of like, “That child looks a lot like you.” “...S/He’s an orphan.”
Yoshirou and Kisanta are close friends. Initially, Yoshirou was designed with a short bun, making him look even more similar to Tomesaburou.
Back when the anime’s production started, Sensei asked the staff “Please make sure to give Shousei-san a cool voice, okay?”.
The reason why Shousei-san has such a sexy voice is that since he uses matchlocks regularly, the smoke that comes out of the fuse gets to his throat. Because of this, his voice became lower.
Satake’s rifle corps will eventually go under, as every army will have their own rifle corps in the future.
Shousei knows this, but keeps silent as he watches over his men.
In the near future, Satake and Fukutomi will be in conflict, because Fukutomi will do business selling guns to every military commander for the war. While no specific date is mentioned in Nintama, we know it takes place during the Sengoku period, which overlaps with the Muromachi period. “Muromachi” is often brought up within the series, and this period corresponds to the Ashikaga Shogunate, which ends in 1573. The use of firearms, which will become even more widespread in the future of the series, seems to indicate we are near the end of Muromachi, when the matchlocks imported from Portugal in the port of Sakai were imitated and perfected by Japanese blacksmiths. Oda Nobunaga equipped his army with firearms in 1549, slowly setting a standard as they got further improved in the following years.Meaning the story is probably set after 1549 but before 1573!
Komatsuda Yuusaku is not married. He really wants to marry, but he’s still dealing with a recent heartbreak.
Kitaishi Teruyo’s age was a fan’s idea.
She is 19 years old. That makes her a mature woman for the era.
Kitaishi Teruyo is in a position similar to Fujiko Mine, except she always ends up making a mistake at a critical moment, resulting in failure. Not sure what their connection is…. Fujiko Mine is a femme fatale kind of character, from the franchise Lupin the III. A female character working solo amongst an overwhelmingly male cast…?
General setting stuff, misc info
The salary of foot soldiers was between 60~70 mon per day. Meaning that hiring 100 foot soldiers for a month would cost 300,000,000 yen nowadays. At war, one battle would cost 3,000,000,000yen, so Dokutake Castle is pretty rich.
Linen fabric cost 100 mon, making clothes very expensive at the time. As a consequence, laborers such as horse riding couriers wore little to no clothes. Characters like Seihachi or Danzou don’t wear pants when riding horses so as to not damage expensive clothes.
Couriers load heavy luggage on a pole they carry on their shoulder. When that happens, they’d remove their clothes to avoid damaging them. When that happens to Seihachi, he ends up wearing no pants and no top, leaving him looking all sexy. (lol. Oh... Seihachi.)
At the time, wood planks were valuable. Half of Rantarou’s house has bamboo flooring.
Because the wood plane wasn’t invented yet, wood planks would look uneven. The beams of Doi-sensei’s house have that uneven finish to them. Kanna, the japanese wood plane (the tool used to make planks even), has been developed mid-Muromachi, making it a new invention by the time Nintama takes place. Before that, yariganna, a curved blade attached to a handle, was used to work wood. The labor intensity came at cost, meaning advanced carpentry was first for samurai houses, temples etc.
The age of characters is expressed according to the western style of counting ages, not the traditional Japanese one. Rantarou, Kirimaru, Shinbei, and all the 1st years are 10 years old. The western way of counting age is what you’re familiar with: a just born is 0 year old, and will turn 1 after fully completing one year, etc. The traditional Japanese way of counting ages comes from China, and faded out of use after the Meiji era. A baby would be considered 1 year old when born, and everyone would get one year older during the New Year. So for example, all the first years are considered 10 years old in modern times, but would have been considered 11 back in the days.
The pattern on Shou-chan’s clothes is called “suhama”. Literally "sandy beach". It’s a symbol representing a shoreline.
The pattern on Kisanta’s clothes is called “shikiriki”. I couldn’t find any information about this, so I wonder if it was misheard. The “shi” part might come from 四 shi, “four”, the first letter in 四角 shikaku, “square”.
The pattern on Ooki-sensei’s clothes is called “karigane”. It refers to the clothes he wears in the manga, since it’s different in the anime. The twisty shape evokes the wings of a goose. Karigane is originally used as a family emblem, kamon, and it features the bird’s head on top of the twisty shape.
The screentone used for the 6th years’ uniform is “Tone No. 654 LETRASET JAPAN”.
And that's it for now! Phew! Thank you for reading this far!
Shit Stirrer: A great cause with a dash of irony
Jumping into my first blog post with Nicola!
Looking fresh, well rested, gorgeous and Christmas ready from - I'm assuming - her family's Galway living room, Nicola posted a photo of herself today wearing 1 of 8 specially designed "Saltburn Insults" t-shirts. These limited edition t-shirts were created by Carey Mulligan and Emerald Fennell (director) to both celebrate one year since the release of the movie Saltburn on Netflix and, more importantly, to help raise funds for War Child UK's "Emergency Christmas Appeal" fundraising efforts. War Child UK's single goal is to ensure a safe future for every child affected by war. This is a cause we know Nicola stands firmly behind! If you're interested in supporting this important cause, follow this link for the t-shirt Nicola is wearing... or scroll to the bottom of the Everpress page to see the other 7 "Saltburn Insults" t-shirts on offer: https://everpress.com/warchild-x-shitstirrer#more-info
So what, you ask, did I mean about that dash of irony?
Look at the angelic look on her face. Nicola, a shit stirrer? Shady Whistledown herself?! Maybe, perhaps sometimes 😉
Over the last week the Lukola fans in my chat groups as well as those sharing thoughts in my live streams, or those sending me DMs, have been expressing the same thing: exhaustion! They (heck... me too. We!) are tired and feeling a whole lot of frustration. Some quotes:
"I feel like we're all here trying to defend Nicola and Luke, trying to fight off all the negative propaganda being put out by the Jakolas and trolls, and all the while Nicola is the one feeding much of the {front facing} narrative. I'm tired and discouraged." "I believe they're together - 100% I do - but I'm tired of not knowing for sure and it's annoying to spend so much time worrying about a couple that may only come clean years from now, or if they get papped." "I'm sick to death of breadcrumbs. I want the whole loaf now!"
Yet we also laughed at the ironic humour in Nicola as a "Shit Stirrer"; the primary distributor (and organizer of other distributors, with Shonda's & JVN's help sometimes) of breadcrumbs, morsels and golden nuggets! The breadcrumbs are so much fun to find, and they can also be confusing and frustrating! Shit stirrer indeed. Xx
Nicola also has ruffled some feathers because of her political and social beliefs (support of the LGBTQ community [Gay Icon!] and abortion rights in Northern Ireland), humanitarian work. From my perspective, GOOD work! To others who perhaps have a vested interest in the status quo? Shit stirrer indeed. Xx
Yes, we Lukola fans know that Nicola and Luke don't owe us anything and that privacy is their right. We also know that Tomdaya took years before they acknowledged their relationship publicly. We should be prepared for the long haul, yes? Yes. 🥴 Le sigh.
As we enter into a new year I know the question for me will be how much of my time, energy and heart will I place into all things Lukola? Over the next week or so I'll think about the wonderful connections I've made in our Lukola community (and the angst I've experienced because of divisions)... I'll think about how fun breadcrumb speculation is, how I relish the hunt for golden nuggets (those solid truths that are ballast for our ship)... and of course the enthusiasm (and agony) that I feel for the ongoing watch for launch.
Today I'm feeling tired and at times, discouraged. My plan is to relax, reassess and come to 2025 with a fresh mindset. No obsession... just patience and fun will be the aim... and keeping up with this blog too.
Will you be on the ship with me in 2025? Or will Nicola and Luke launch before the New Year and save us all from the misery?! Ha!!
Cheers to Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Merry Seasonal Celebrations... and to my fellow Commonwealth Countries, Yay for Boxer - I mean Boxing - Day (Dec 26th)!!
Aaniin Xx
P.S. Best doggos in the whole wide world! Convince me otherwise ;-)
So. On the topic of Alastor headcannons. What's your opinion on these radio themed ones:
Alastor has an internal radio. Like the concept of having songs play through your head, but more literal. He can tune to stations as if he was a radio himself. And if he really wants to, he can connect himself to other radios in his immediate vicinity and play that music though them instead.
His antlers help his radio powers. So when they get damaged (in battle, sheds them, whatever reason you wanna put here) his internal radio goes bazerk. Think; flipping stations randomly, connecting to other radios when he doesn't want it to, playing loud static at random. All the chaos.
He can hear through other radios. He once had to listen to Vox playing Barbie Girl through a TV right next to a radio in Vox's studio, for a week straight. Surely enough; Barbie Girl is now banned from all radio stations in hell.
What do you think? I got more like these if you like them. Give me a generic topic and I can probably list several under that category.
OHH RADIO HEASCANONS
Yes, but he also can turn it on and off when he needs
Never thought about it, but it's funny (don't think i'm going to use it anywhere but who knows, maybe i'll make some funzies with that)
Pretty much used it in one my comic slihdsdkjfh +headcanon that Vox taught him that, he also can control when and which radio he wants to listen (or his head would be a horrible mess) ut i like headcanon that he has some songs banned on the radio lol
speaking of other radiostations, i actually made an instruction on How To get Your Own Radio Station In Hell, let me just find it real quick... i wanted to share it long ago, but couldn't find a moment
Imagine you're a normal sinner in hell, who suddenly wants to become radio host for one small station. and it's possible! and you won't even die, and get some benefits, if succeed. So, it's kinda hard, but doable
1. You need to write a letter asking for a permission to have your own station to The Radio Demon himself. a) letter should be handwritten, and your handwriting must be at least readable. Or you can use typewriter, if you find one. DO NOT write it on a computer and then print, you'll probably won't be able to get your station in following 50 years b) You should send your letter via post. DO NOT try to meet Radio Demon in person, you'll just lose time, or even if you get lucky, he won't take your letter. b*) Now you can just come to Hazbin Hotel and give your letter to Charlie Morningstar and ask her to give it to Radio Demon. Don't worry, she won't read it. b**) You should leave your contacts, that's obligatory if you want to get an answer - that means you have to have a place to live. c) Do not try to e-mail him, he doesn't even have a phone or computer to receive it. If someone gives you 100% totally real Radio Demon's e-mail - don't trust them, its fake 2. You'll get answer from the Radio Demon in 1-2 weeks, he'll send you set of papers which you have to fill out. You'll probably have to do it 3-4 times so don't worry, he's just testing your dedication. In these papers you give general info about your future radio station - the name, schedule, what activities you'll gonna have and what kinds of music wanna play. Include some jazz, especially if you mostly want to have modern music. You'll also have to tell a bit about yourself. You absolutely should not be connected to voxtech in any way. 2.b) he may simply dislike your ass and become a real bureaucratic monster. Keep trying - you can impress him with you dedication and he may like you in the end 3. When you got your application approved, you'll have to sign a contract, that gives you right to broadcast on a certain radio frequency. According to the contract - your radio station belongs to the Radio Demon, you'll just getting it in unlimited use, until the contract terminated. You DO NOT sell your soul to the Radio Demon. He can broadcast over you any time he needs and you can't do anything about it. He can also ask you to change something in your broadcast schedule, ask to replace of cancel any of your programs, ban music and so on. (Tho, he probably won't do anything of it). But since your radio station is his property, you're as well under his protection while you on your station, so if someone attacks you and you're unable to protect yourself and your station, you'll have a way to contact him and ask for help. You'll have a specific channel for it and list of morse codes for emergencies. You should not use this channel for anything else, or you'll lose your station. 4. After all paperwork is done and approved, you have to get equipment for your station. DO NOT use ANYTHING voxtech related, and you absolutely cannot have TV on your station. 5. After you got all the equipment, invite the Radio Demon to your station. He'll set everything up for you and give you list of emergency codes. Do not try to interrupt his infodumps even if you lost track of it and can't understand shit, it's better if you show enthusiasm. 6. And done! Now you are happy small radio host! The Radio Demon may show up on your station sometimes to check how everything's going, but don't worry about it, he won't be bother you too often after few weeks.
P. S. You are NOT friends with the Radio Demon, even if he acts friendly and calls you "dear" - that's just his normal, not-threatenning behavior P. P. S. Don't be too personal, don't dump on him your problems if they aren't related to the station when he comes to you. Just make him some coffee, talk about weather and tell that everything works just fine P. P. P. S. ABSOLUTELY! DO NOT! TRY TO HUG HIM! He'll just laugh at you, and if you somehow succeed he'll make everything to make you regret every action in your life and afterlife that led you to this moment (and it doesn't necessarily means he will torture you physically, once he run into masacistic freak that got a boner when was tortured) P. P. P. P. S. If you caught feelings for him - suffer in silence and NEVER try to confess. You'll lose your station immediately and will never get it back.
All these instructions are totally written by Rosie who heared so many complaints from Alastor about how people want to become a radio host but can't do it properly
And Alastor is probably making them experience what he went through to become a radio host in life
GOD, TUMBLR WHY UR SUCH AN ASS TODAY WTF LET ME JUST POST MY SILLY TEXT
hi!! hello!! I've read throw the thab comic this morning and it got me audible gasping and saying "my god it's so good why is it so good it's" out loud, absolute 10/10 reading experience thank you thank you you made my day honestly
my question is this – is there anything you'd like to infodump about in thab au (characters, lamb's past, wordbuilding details, that fact that narinder's third eye seems to be much more emotional and honest than narinder himself)? I've skimmed through tags and didn't find that mush info (outside the comic itself) and im very intrigued, so maybe you'd like to share anything! it would be cool!! if not that's cool too, i hope you have a good day<3
hrvnuhrg Thank you so much! I can't wait for the comic to continue and see yours and everybody else's reaction =D And even then, it's a bonus, knowing you like the project is already very cool ngl For the info-dump! A lot of what you put in parenthesis will be brought up in the comic, and I'm the kind of mf that likes to keep surprises >=3
BUT
I can give you THaB's cast! Not everyone is here, because some characters are not very important and/or not very developed. As a bonus tho, you'll get everyone's name in the Lamb's conlang I made =D
COtL characters:
Lamb and Nari! The two most important characters of the comic! Since the bullshit revolve around their relationship. No anecdote for them, because everything can be spoiler-
It comes as a surprise to no one I think, but the bishops will be there =D Fun fact, in this image, I put them from younger to older, based on one of the co-writter (@wowowhy) head-canon that the more eyes the bishops have, the older the are! Making Narinder the middle child-
Mystic Seller, Claunek and Ratau wont be seen very often! They'll have more of a technical roles in the story. Giving key information, giving state of things. But I try to keep wiggle room in the writing, so things might change!
THaB characters:
Lamb's disciples! Put from older to youngest. Salky is Lamb's right hand. She was the Hathor demon in Nari's fight! Loki loves to look for frogs from time to time. Deimos sometime sneak some alcohol from his bar-tending job. Pixie likes to drink a cup of tea when she get the time. Nimwé goes to the cemetery pretty often to change the flowers of the graves.
Have some of the followers we'll see! Litsy loves everyone (to everyone's dismay). We saw him as an Orcus demon during Narinder's fight! Purna likes how lively her kitchen get when it's time to prepare dinner. We saw her as a Vesta demon earlier! Nysus is the self appointed resource manager of the flock. But some people would just call them a thief. Meralon, the flock undertaker, he is also Gérard drinking buddy. Gérard is the unluckiest person you could ever found in the Land of the Old Faith, which makes him a very good janitor.
I might reblog this post to put more characters in the future, stay tuned!
