I hate software I hate people who make software I hate computers. For a small stipend, I could make some of the software on some of the computers slightly less broken. I couldn't possibly be any worse at this than the people who do it now. But nobody will let me, because of the economy
#all i wanted to do was make an account on this personal finance app thing. not an obscure one. big famous huge one#that you would think would do what it's supposed to do at least a little bit.#after an hour and a half of jaqueline from tech support telling me to try different platforms with slightly different settings#i have an account. on the mobile app. i can't add a password through the app and i can't log in anywhere else without a password#i don't particularly want an account anymore (being capricious and prone to giving up on things)#but i entered my bank account info in the one i half-made so i want to delete it#obviously the first step to delete your account is to log in. the thing i can't do.#jaqueline from tech support disconnected (devastating betrayal) (after everything we had been through together) (didn't even say goodbye)#so i'm going to have to try to explain all of this to some new jaqueline who isn't paid enough or given a procedure to follow#when there's an actual problem that can't be solved by a somewhat technologically literate end user#and they're going to be like 'have you tried it in chrome with cookies triple enabled under the full moon after turning it off and back on?#and i'm going to be like i don't want to try it in chrome again i want to arrange a pistol duel#with one or more of your senior backend developers please#and i want my brother's computer science professor to start explaining how ocaml works properly so i don't keep having to drop everything#every time he has a homework assignment due to walk him through it line by line#and then i want my college tuition refunded and a do-over of my entire adult life and a personal heartfelt apology from anyone who ever sai#that you should learn to code instead of majoring in underwater basket weaving#because i'm pretty sure you don't need years of experience you have no way in hell of acquiring#before you can apply for an '''''''''entry level''''''''' job as an underwater basket weaver#and your teenage coworkers at your retail job don't act all surprised and confused and like there must be something wrong with you#(there are several things but that's not the problem)#when you tell them that you're having a hard time getting hired to weave baskets#because the market for that kind of thing is really oversaturated rn actually#and basket weaving is a beautiful traditional art form that also happens to be quite useful#because the thing about baskets is they fucking work.#:wq

AI in Banking to Fight Back COVID-Led Challenges
The BFSI sector is walking towards a big fortune with AI catalyzing banking innovation. For years the banking industry has been promoting digital capabilities which caught the attention only after facing the COVID-struck consequences.
The pandemic might have shut a few doors, but for the banks, nevertheless, it was a transformative experience for banking sector. The limitations have pushed the BFSIs to adopt the formidable AI-interventions to fuel automation in smarter operations to cater to services. Instead of challenges, the onset of the pandemic has allowed the space for the banking sectors to grow and improve digital services and cut costs for additional service preparations.
Tumblr media
During the lockdown, the restriction to in-person services has limited the branch banking functions and the BFSIs took a shift to online banking to offer their services. This even helped the customers to realize the benefit of doubts about how digital banking works and learned about the efficiency of connected systems. From money transfer to bill payments, now the users of online banking can have it all with one click.
The autofill option of the banking forms added an element of surprise to the service users and online KYC to the personal data identification without physically walking into a bank. Under the wave of futuristic thoughts, NASSCOM reports that the banking sectors are close to retaining online banking services alongside the normal brick and mortar structure to deal with their customers. Since the onset of the pandemic, more customers than ever have used online banking services, and banks would really like to stay online even after the Covid crisis passes. They're a step further in improving their digital strategies in developing end-to-end services to present the purchasers with a far better customer experience with their services.
The three-layered approach
The growing digital economy in banking is improving customer expectations. Financial awareness today is no more restricted to urban lives - rural populations are also aware of the finance regulations that would be favorable for their lifestyle and earnings.
This assures that the Indian market is marching towards strong digital transformation and AI would be the most impactful contributor to the market in financial services. The BFSI enterprises AI-led business will play the lead for the transformation journeys of the sector. The objective of this report is to uncover the rapid and transformational growth opportunities for BFSI enterprises by leveraging the potential of AI.
The BFSI sectors aim to be more definitive over the digital improvements with AI applications and AI-transformation would be followed in 3 layers-
AI-Contributors for Frontend-
Contextual conversational agent
Persona-based interactions
Social media analytics
Virtual banking
Customized service marketing
AI-Contributors for Controller System-
Fraud detection through AI-ML
AI-integrations operating systems
AI-directed compliance monitoring
Anti-money laundering
Risk-profile assessment
AI-Contributors for Backend System-
Data-driven Market insights
Identifying competitions
In building predictive models for asset quality assessments
For proactive risk modeling
And performance and response enhancement
As the BFSI sector is traversing the AI-maturity curve, sooner or later the sector will be asking for AI-experts who can diagnostics to assess the maturity of the adapted models. Therefore, the BFSI sectors are looking for experts who cater to the value addition with AI.
Upskill with AI for BFSI
Enabling automation is a huge positive drive for the banking organization. The market that grew twice its size since 2018 is yet to scavenge the raging issue of unemployment. In a survey conducted by an ed-tech company, over 4000 AI jobs go vacant due to a prominent skill gap. Considering remuneration, from entry-level to senior professionals the monthly salary ranges from Rs. 6-12 lakhs per annum.
With an AI institution, a savvy financer can opt for a futuristic job like- Fintech headhunter/liaison, Self-driving Finance Engineer, Sustainable Wealth Manager, Crypto Forecaster, Trust officer, Cross-company Cybersecurity Liaison, and others.
To ‘win the war of skills’ Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee in collaboration with WileyNXT has launched the Artificial Intelligence in BFSI program.  India’s first-of-its-kind online program made for BFSI professionals.
For over 200 years, Wiley has been helping people and organizations develop the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. They are dedicated to developing efficient learning products, digital transformation education, learning, assessment, and certification solutions to help universities, businesses, and individuals move between education and employment and achieve their ambitions In becoming a key player in the market, the course is a boon to the emerging product managers in today’s date.

Could you please advise me what to do in life? Why not a StartUp?
Many young bloods planned so many things in life at an early stage, but as the time passed the plans fail and they become depressed. It is not only a boundary of a single country; it is an issue of all over the globe. Young generation people think and dreams a lot, but they need a guidance and a mentorship at that time to make the dream come into reality. Here is the solid platform of mentors, life coaches, guides and advisers; SkillPal. The team have a huge list of mentors who have a long-term experience in the industry. Young people and the novices can come to SkillPal for live video chat and bite-sized videos which may provide by experienced mentors.
Tumblr media
Mentors can develop into some of your most meaningful and life-changing relationships. A good mentor can make the difference between learning lessons “the hard way” and easily sidestepping mistakes on your entrepreneurial journey. But a mentor can’t be taken for granted; their time is just as valuable as yours, so don’t waste it. It’s important to take the time to prepare, to learn about them, to ask questions and to really put their advice to work. SkillPal is the strongest platform to get an expert mentor who may provide personalized feedback. You can definitely find a mentor at SkillPal. It is the platform where you can get bite-size videos on your topic from experts. SkillPal will make you reach the career goals, maybe your passion or professional benchmark.
How you may create a bond with your SkillPal Mentor:
1. Ask how you can contribute to the relationship.
2. Set SMART goals.
3. Prepare an agenda.
4. Bring specific questions.
5. Ask for honest feedback.
6. Take an active approach.
A mentor is a business professional with the experience to provide personalized support, sound business advice and encouragement to help emerging entrepreneurs develop their own abilities and insights. A mentor’s value stems from the fact that they’ve “been there and done that,” giving you the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and successes.
I am really wanting to tell you what are the key roles in a startup business. But you may need a mentor first to make you understand what the things to do and what not to. A mentor is a person who has a professional and life experience and who voluntarily agrees to help a mentee develop skills, competencies, or goals. Put another way, a mentor is an advisor and role model who is willing to invest in the mentee’s personal growth and professional development. A mentee is someone who has identified a specific personal or professional goal and who believes that the guidance and help of a mentor and being held accountable to the mentor can help them achieve their goal. If you are searching for a mentor SkillPal is the best way. Effective mentoring requires more than common sense. Research indicates that mentors and mentees who develop and manage successful mentoring partnerships demonstrate a number of specific, identifiable skills that enable learning and change to take place.
No startup is built on the exact same structure. This is because startups are, by definition, agile, lean, and adept at evolving based on the company need. However, some general role categories seem to recur everywhere. These include:
·         Engineers: out of all the positions at a startup, backend engineers are probably the ones who benefit the most clarity. Hackers, born coders and computer scientists are usually technically-orientated, focusing on learning the best programming languages, algorithms and frameworks for the project.
·         Product managers: often have engineering backgrounds, but also see the bigger picture. They enjoy analyzing traffic, understand how to prototype and research, and often know their way around various tasks.
·         Marketing and sales: the hustlers who will do everything in their power to promote and sell the product to the right audience.
·         Business Developers: often lumped together with sales, these positions often become available to more experienced salespeople. There is crossover in the skills, but making deals on a large scale implies strong people skills and an innate ability to network with the right people.
·         Legal teams: not always needed for brand new ventures, but primordial for growing startups.
·         Human Resources: hiring and firing, but also attracting top talent to fill positions at the company.
Startup roles are heavily dependent on what the company does. They also change greatly based on their size. This is why it is often useful to understand roles in the context of personalities, rather than job positions.
The Dreamer:     often the chief executive officer (CEO). They are the people whose passion     and vision can lead the project, either because they started it or because     they are absolutely the right person for it. They are often the startup     founders.
The Visionary: business     vision is just as important as company vision, and the responsibility     falls on the shoulders of the chief product officer (CPO). Their role is     to inspire team members based on the CEO’s dream, making goals a reality.
The Doer:     a role often taken on by the chief technical officer (CTO). It’s their job     to understand and meet technical challenges, by hiring the right startup     team and making them all work harmoniously on set targets and goals.
The Hustler: this     is what chief sales officers (CSOs) are often called. Hustling is     synonymous here with networking, selling, and generally driving the     product forward through usage.
The Growth Hacker: a     strategic thinker who is both analytical and creative. This person     understands marketing and how to create traction by understanding what     users want and how to give it to them.
One of the biggest challenges for small startups is to define clear roles that can be taken on. This is because startup teams often have to start small a small and one person will have to wear many hats. CEOs are often the ones doing the marketing, HR, legal and sales. CTOs manage projects, operations and developers. This can cause numerous problems in the long term. Roles that aren’t clearly defined can create frustrations for every party involved. Communication failures, authority issues and work overloads are all common problems found in young startups. In short, while wearing different hats is inevitable at first, it becomes important to promote delegation and the division of tasks as the startup evolves.
For most startup teams, it starts with a whiteboard. They will gather to answer a number of questions that make role definition easier:
What am I good at?
What technical skills can I offer?
How is my experience relevant?
Will I be able to delegate or hire people to help my     role?
Am I the best person for the role in the company?
This may take some back and forth. As always with teamwork, it’s important to be clear-headed.
This is where finding the personalities that work best together can have a tremendously positive knock-on effect. Strong, clashing egos could attempt to take on too much while stepping on other people’s toes. Similarly, those who lack assertiveness may see key responsibilities taken from them when they are in fact best suited for the role.
Choosing a mentor is not easy. But it is easy if you go through SkillPal. Here you can get the most important feedback of your work and knowledge. They are the most important pal of your skills. A mentor is someone whose life or work you value and admire, and who you think might be a good guide. These days, a mentor can be any age, in any field, so we encourage you not to think of a mentor in traditional terms. Too often we limit our mentors to those in more senior positions. Don’t let a person’s age, title, or experience pigeonhole your thinking. Have specific goals. Before you even begin your journey into looking for a mentor, you need to first know what your goals are.
The role of a SkillPal mentor is to:
· Help build your self-reliance and leadership skills
· Help you discover your own insights, abilities and solutions as you start and grow your business
· Support your self-directed learning and help you come to your own conclusions and decisions
· Listen to your ideas and answer your questions truthfully
· Give emotional support while also challenging you
· Provide real-world business advice when requested/appropriate
· Celebrate milestones and successes
Being given the “answers” can make your life easier, but that isn’t the primary type of support a mentor provides. Your mentor will enable you and provide opportunities for you to learn how to solve problems and make decisions, ultimately helping you to help yourself.
Mentors are an essential ingredient for the success of any social entrepreneurship. They can help you learn how to navigate many of the challenges typically faced by social entrepreneurs, such as:
· conceiving a viable business model that creates both social and financial value
· measuring and evidencing social impact
· governance and legal structures
· processes

Mentoring participants will bring different competencies, tenure, and organizational knowledge to the program. You’ll want to make sure you’re matching them on the right skill traits. To do this, mentors and mentees fill out rich profiles. Based on the objectives of the program, these profiles will contain elements to help create rich matches, such as mentee developmental goals, mentor competencies, function, job experience, topical interests, and educational background.
Actually, SkillPal is the only mentorship platform where you can find a specific solution for your business and yourself. Having a mentor relationship is often a dream come true. A mentor is a teacher, a trusted advisor that a budding entrepreneur can turn to with questions and get valuable advice, tailored directly to their industry and specific business situation. But, how do you actually go about finding a mentor? While sometimes the relationship forms organically, it’s too much to hope that the perfect mentor will simply drop into your lap.
By using SkillPal we can be more confident that how my work is going on! Many of us do our work or our project from our perception of our own concept. But the maximum time we are getting flop and lose our confidence. But if we review our work from an expert mentor then we can be very successful. A mentor from SkillPal will tell us what mistakes he or she had done by doing this long ago. So as a result, if we listen to them, we can’t repeat those mistakes again.
In conclusion, it’s useful to remember that no organization, big or small, is built on the same structure. Amazon, Google and Facebook all operate on drastically different org charts. Similarly, no startup launches with the exact same roles. Regardless, no matter how small your venture is, it will still require structure. While it must be agile and adaptable, this means clearly defined roles that match the personalities of the employees. It’s not only a safe way to ensure smooth long-term operations but clearly a business advantage. In every corner of the world, there are many boys and girls who want to make their own startups rather than they want to work under someone. It is very easy to think but tough to handle.
There are chances of mistakes while starting their own business at a very young age. Young people must take advice from experts. SkillPal is a platform where people can get industry experts. I suggest SkillPal for you.

FYI: Senior Integrations Engineer
Tumblr media
Headquarters: Remote URL: https://usefyi.com/
Documents. They are a part of most of our daily lives. And yet we just can’t find them.
The number one problem people have with documents is finding them across all the apps they use.
The FYI team is hard at work to solve this massive problem. When you join FYI, you’ll be working with co-founders Marie Prokopets and Hiten Shah on innovative solutions to it.
We’re a fully-remote customer-focused team of 10 who are improving how people collaborate with each other.
Now, we’re in the midst of building features to empower teams and companies to find the information they need quickly.
We’re hiring a Senior Integrations Engineer to become a key team member that helps fuel our growth and build a product companies love to use.
Job Overview
As a Senior Integrations Engineer, you will own a key part of FYI’s infrastructure. Through building integrations with cloud services such as G-Suite, Dropbox, Notion, and many more, you’ll help FYI make sure the product delivers on its value proposition: finding the information people need at work, right when they need it.
What You’ll Do:
Analyze cloud products and API documentation to design integrations with FYI
Build integrations with cloud services, such as G-Suite, Dropbox, Notion, and many more
Develop API clients, webhook processors, and data transformations
Code standards, code reviews, technical planning/research, testing/QA.
Investigate and resolve bugs/customer issues.
Assist in scoping, estimating, and planning of projects.
Who We’re Looking For
You love working with cloud products, data, and APIs
You have at least 5 years experience with: Python, API clients, data analysis, OAuth
Bonus Tech Qualifications: Docker, AWS, Elasticsearch, Postgres, Lambda, S3
You have high accountability and ownership of your work.
You have a bias towards action. You love to move fast, are self motivated, and a life-long learner.
You care about working on fast-growing products while iterating and sweating the details.
You’re willing to do whatever it takes, even if this means working outside of your role (backend help frontend, frontend, handle customer support, etc).
You’re able to effectively balance speed/quality/tech debt and make engineering decisions that enable speed and quality results.
You’re a product thinker who cares about the customer.
What’s it Like to Work at FYI?
We love learning from customers and being data informed. You’ll be working on a product that is backed by customer research from the start.
Moving fast is a requirement so we can iterate based on what we learn from our customers.
We highly value and celebrate clear communication and clarity of thought, because the number one problem of remote work is communication. We’ve written about it here.
We love sharing what we learn about how people work and collaborate online. Here’s a recent article on why people switch document apps.
You Should Include These in Your Application
Your favorite public API and why you like it.
Why you want to work at FYI.
Your resume, LinkedIn profile and GitHub. We want to learn more about you.
We are hiring for full time roles only. Please no agencies or development shops.

Network & Wireless Site Survey Cabling Directory – Updates
To see the full video please see it below or you can check it out to our channel: https://sitesurveypros.com/
In today’s blog, I just want to give everyone a quick update for those of you who are looking at joining our contractor installer group for wireless like surveys and network cabling and other IT contractors or similar contract positions here most of it like I mentioned it’s still the same categories the site is still focused mostly on structure cabling and Wireless site surveys primarily wireless site survey.
Just an update for this we had to change the theme of our website from I think it was called service directory to a list of our theme just because some of the functionality didn’t make good businesses like we wanted to make it easier for you guys to just add your listing and then we approve it in the backend and then you can kind of go about. Like uploading your images, adding your links to your profile, adding your phone number, etc. that’s just an update there. Otherwise, it’s still gonna look the same. We still get the same amount of prescience per city for certain services like I mentioned the two most popular directory listing are wireless site surveys and network and data cabling then beside that we have barcode scanners repair because we get calls for that and then warehouse management system software just because with wireless site surveys they kind of go hand in hand. If you work in the AI DC environment and when you’re doing wireless access points, you always have the opportunity to do the network and data cabling and if you don’t you outsource it. So this is a good complement to all four of these especially if you’re in AIDC. This is how the new website is going to look. It should be done by developers which my team says it should be done today but I say probably a week. If you want to search for a contractor let me just give an example. This is all integrated with Google Maps API, so it’s very accurate now. When I go to a location. You know as I start typing in this is actually using Google Maps development API so very accurate and then you choose your category. Now, we’re cabling and because we haven’t molded anything nothing is here so as you can see it’s a lot easier. If someone’s looking for a contractor within your city. Let’s say in Toronto and they don’t find it then they could always expand out or they could pinch the map if they’re on mobile or can kind of zoom in and zoom out on the Google developer Map so very intuitive, very easy so like I mentioned it’s gonna apply the same rules if you’re a contractor for cabling. We’re gonna allow contractors and it’s gonna use the bump off map method meaning it’s seniority so that’s why it’s important to get on this list as soon as possible. The people who have seniority are the people who have registered for the course or that are paying for a monthly fee or monthly subscription. If you’re paying for the monthly subscription or have bought the course for our lead generation for IT contractors and cabling installers then your listing can stay but for now it’ll be free. For example, let’s say you’re in PA in Pennsylvania. PA is a big state you’ve got Philadelphia Pittsburgh. So in Pittsburgh we could have two contractors here for cabling two contractors for Wireless site surveys and then Philadelphia the same thing too. For cabling, wireless site surveys and that’s it now. Let’s say both of these are free and then one person or one company wants to pay the ninety nine dollars per month. Then, one of them gets bumped off but like I mentioned there’s only gonna be two contractors. Let’s say that they want to pay, it’s all about seniority in this event so anyways that’s how the site is gonna work for now like I mentioned. For example, Let’s say you’re in Toronto. Toronto is another big city we’re gonna divide this by a kilometer radius. In Toronto it’s gonna be the Greater Toronto area. Some of the cities that’ll be covered that’ll be allowed is like Mississauga maybe Markham. Markham is gonna be like the York Region and then you can have like the London Waterloo Region and the same thing applies. For example, let’s say we go to California let’s go to Texas so Texas you gotta Fort Worth then you have a Murillo so, we might be sectioning it off as Amarillo and we might go down to the standing Austin area, Houston area, Fort Worth etc. So that’s how it’s going to be divided. As we grow, it’ll be case by case so that;s why it’s important add your listing it’s free for now as we get more hits and more website traffic and more visitors because our marketing team is just constantly putting on blogs doing SEO just so your customers can search for you. When your customers look for and now we’re cabling installers in Austin Texas you guys come up so it’s important and they get on the list and your listing pretty easily comes over to the top section and then all you have to do is create an account to sign in and then you just add your listings. Once you get signed in then you can start modifying everything you could put your cover image and gallery images on. I’d recommend putting some images of your office. Put in your logo, your hours of operation, select your category. If you’re networking data cabling and then your listing region. Right now, like I mentioned it’s still in development so we’re gonna put in our regions. If you don’t see your region just let us know and we’ll add it. Like I mentioned it’s free for now as we grow. Just continue to ask us questions in our Facebook group. You can come over here for the link to our Facebook Group. Lead generation on autopilot pros and in order to join our group you need to state your company and your website and then just let us know if you’re into wireless accessories or cabling. That is it for our website update. I just want to give everyone an update because I’ve had probably about five emails yesterday asking us about when the site’s gonna be ready. I’ll provide another update. Our development teams have just been a little bit slow so any of these guys stay safe out there and I’ll speak to everyone soon. Thanks!

Machine learning with Python: An introduction
Machine learning is one of our most important technologies for the future. Self-driving cars, voice-controlled speakers, and face detection software all are built on machine learning technologies and frameworks. As a software developer you may wonder how this will impact your daily work, including the tools and frameworks you should learn. If you're reading this article, my guess is you've already decided to learn more about machine learning.
In my previous article, "Machine Learning for Java developers," I introduced Java developers to setting up a machine learning algorithm and developing a simple prediction function in Java. While Java's ecosystem includes many tools and frameworks for machine learning, Python has emerged as the most popular language for this field. Figure 1 shows the result of a recent Google Trends query combining the search term "machine learning" with "Python," "Java," and "R." Although this graph is not reliable from a statistical point of view, it does allow us to visualize the popularity of Python for machine learning.
In this article, you'll learn why Python is especially successful for machine learning and other uses involving data science. I'll briefly introduce some of the Python-based tools data scientists and software engineers use for machine learning, and suggest a few ways to integrate Python into your machine learning development process--from mixed environments leveraging a Java backend to Python-based solutions in clouds, containers, and more.
A use case for machine learning
To start, let's revisit the use case from my previous introduction to machine learning. Assume you're working for a large, multinational real estate company, Better Home Inc. To support its agents, the company uses third-party software systems as well as a custom-developed core system. This system is built on the top of a massive database containing historical data on sold homes, sale prices, and descriptions of available houses. The database is updated continuously by internal and external sources, and is used to manage sales as well as estimating the market value of properties for sale.
An agent may enter features such as house size, year of construction, location, and so on to receive the estimated sale price. Internally, this function uses a machine learning model--essentially, a mathematical expression of model parameters--to calculate a prediction. (Please see my previous article for a more detailed explanation of machine learning algorithms and how to develop und use them in Java.)
Listing 1. A machine learning model based on linear regression
 double predictPrice(double[] houseFeatures) {
// mathematical expression (here linear regression)
   double price = this.modelParams[0] * 1 +
                  this.modelParams[1] * houseFeatures[0] +
                  this.modelParams[2] * houseFeatures[1] +
                  ...;
   return price;
}
In Listing 1, a machine learning model is implemented using a linear regression algorithm, which is very popular in machine learning. The algorithm multiplies model parameters with the feature parameters for a given property and sums them up. As is typical in machine learning, a training process determines the parameter values to be used for the model. This approach is called supervised learning.
Supervised learning consists of feeding a system labeled example records, which are then analyzed for correlations. In this case, the system is fed historical house record features that have been labeled with the sale price. The model looks for correlations between features that have some impact on sale price, as well as the weight of these relationships. Model parameters are then adjusted based on the identified correlations and weights. This is how a machine learning model "learns" to estimate the price for a given house.
 Listing 2. Training model parameters
 void train(double[] houseFeatures, double[] pricesOfSale) {
// .. find hidden structures and determine the
   // proper model parameters
   this.modelParams = ...
}
Challenges in machine learning
While the code example may appear quite simple, the challenge is to find and train the appropriate algorithm. In contrast to linear regression, which is relatively simple, most algorithms used for machine learning are more complex. Many machine learning algorithms require additional (hyper) parameters, which require a deeper understanding of the mathematics behind the algorithm.
Another challenge is finding and selecting appropriate training data. Data records have to be collected and understood, and collecting the records is not always easy. In order to build and train a price-prediction model, you must first locate a large number of sold house records. In order to be useful, you need not only the sale price but other features that help define the value of each house. In many cases, this means importing and consolidating from external as well as internal data sources. As an example, you might fetch house characteristics as well as the price of sale from an internal database storing sales transactions. For additional characteristics, you might call external partner APIs that provide information regarding the transport infrastructure or income levels for the given neighborhood.
Machine learning as a scientific process
Developing machine learning models is more similar to a scientific process than to traditional computer programming. A scientific process starts with a question, or an observation. For instance, you might observe that senior estate agents at Better Home Inc. are quite good at estimating the market price of a house. By interviewing these agents, you discover that they are able to quickly enumerate the features that determine the market value of a house. Furthermore, they're well versed in market conditions for different cities and regions. From this observation, you theorize that anyone could determine the market price of a house by combining historical sales data with key features of the property. Using this data, you could develop a machine learning model capable of estimating the sale price of a house. This feature would be of value to the company because it would enable inexperienced agents to determine the expected sale price of a new offer.
In order to test your thesis, you will need to acquire and explore the selected data sets. At this point, you are seeking an overview of the data structure. To get this overview, you will likely use tools such as Tableau, KNIME, and Weka, or even simple libraries like Python Data Analysis Library (pandas) or matplotlib. Before attempting to build your machine learning models, you will also need to prepare your data records by handling invalid or missing values. Once you've built your models, you will need to test and validate them in order to know whether your assumptions are true or false. You might, for example, validate whether the Better Home Inc. machine learning model is capable of estimating the proper sale price of a house. In general, data exploration, analysis, cleaning, and validation are the most time-consuming activities of machine learning.
The role of the data scientist
Data scientists are frequently responsible for the major tasks of a machine learning process. Most data scientists have a background in mathematics and statistics, but they are also typically proficient with programming and data modeling skills. Data scientists often have a strong understanding of data-mining techniques, which helps them to understand and select data sources, as well as gaining insight from the data. Careful data analysis helps teams choose the appropriate machine learning algorithms for a given use case.
In contrast to traditional software engineers, including enterprise Java developers, a data scientist is more focused on data and the hidden patterns in data. Data scientists typically develop, train, and process machine learning models using computing environments and data platforms implemented by traditional software engineers.
Understanding the role of data scientists in machine learning helps us understand why Python is the preferred language for this field. Unlike traditional software engineers, most data scientists prefer Python as a programming language. This is because data scientists are generally closer to scientific and research communities, where R and Python are widely used. Moreover, these communities have developed Python-based scientific libraries that make it easier to develop machine learning models. Now there is a growing, Python-based tools ecosystem specifically for machine learning. This ecosystem includes Jupyter Notebook, an interactive web-based Python shell, which is the current, de facto standard in the field of data science.
Jupyter Notebook extends a command-line Python interpreter with a web-based user interface and some enhanced visualization capabilities. It integrates code and output into a single web document that combines code, explanatory text, and visualizations. The inline plotting of the output allows immediate data visualization and iterative development and analysis. A notebook is used to explore data as well as to develop, train, and test machine learning models. As an example, a data scientist working for Better Home Inc. might use a notebook to load and explore available housing data sets, as shown in Figure 3.
Figure 3. Exploring data with Jupyter Notebook
A notebook in Jupyter consists of input cells and output cells. The editable input cells contain common Python code, which will be executed by pressing the key combination Ctrl+Enter. In the notebook shown in Figure 3, the second input cell is used to load a houses.csv file into a pandas dataframe. The dataframe provides utilities to manipulate and visualize data in an intuitive way. The third cell of the notebook contains a dataframe used to plot a histogram of house prices over time.
Data scientists use histograms and other charts and visualizations to understand data, and to identify outliers and inconsistencies in the data. Identifying inconsistencies and outliers is important because it allows you to sort through and resolve them in the data preparation process. This process eventually leads to clean data sets, which you can use to develop reliable machine learning models. You use the data sets to identify the features or house properties that are most relevant to the final sale price. These are the features that will define your machine learning model. Most algorithms aren't intelligent enough to automatically extract meaningful features from the full data set, and most algorithms won't work well if there are too many features to be analyzed.
I explained in my Java-based introduction to machine learning that logistic regression algorithms require numeric values. For such a machine learning model, all of your strings or category values must be converted to numeric values. The process of conversion is done during feature extraction. One way to extract features is to develop a dedicated function that converts the raw input of house records into a vectorized representation that the algorithm can understand.
Below is a simplified extract_core_features() method written in Python. If you are unfamiliar with Python, don't be confused by the self argument. In Python, the first argument of every non-static method definition is always a reference to the current instance of the class. On the caller side, this argument will be passed automatically by executing the method.
A significant portion of the machine learning code data scientists write is for feature extraction. In the field of natural language processing, for instance, several non-trivial conversion steps are required to transform human text into a vectorized form.[Source]-https://www.javaworld.com/article/3322898/machine-learning-with-python-an-introduction.html
