Thinking about how if Shermy Pines. And like, if he is the baby, he’d be born in the 1970s and be 40 by 2012 and he’s already a grandad. He had to be a teen dad in the 80s (after a severe economic recession) and then his kid ended up being a teen parent by 1999 (Which is 8 years before ANOTHER SEVERE ECONOMIC RECESSION LOL)
Also he was born into a pretty broken family, probably rarely if ever saw his brothers. Do you think he ever saw Stanley before he had to start pretending to be Ford? Do you think Ford visited from college??? Because he didn’t seem confident facing his father until he made millions, so like???
And, like, do you think Filbrick and Caryn changed as parents by the time they raised Shermy? Because it seems like a trend that as parents get older they mellow out a bit, so Shermy probably has a completely different experience with their parents then Stan and Ford, and talking to them is just “is this seriously the same parents???” (Imagine the silent resentment that’d cause 😭😭😭)
Personally I headcannon that Shermy had a daughter (Mabel and Dipper’s mom) and not a son like it says on the wiki because c’mon. Can he just have a daughter. Idk why this is important to me but… c’mon. Can he just have a daughter. It just feels right to me.
#gravity falls#Shermy pines#sherman pines#him being the same age as my parents feels weird#also him and his kid would’ve had kids at like age 14#he’d be like 28 by the time Mabel and Dipper are born#CAN YOU IMAGINE#not even 30 yet#no wonder Mabel and Dipper’s parents are fighting#they got together in like freshman year#that’s if their actual parents are still together#is Shermy even alive tho? bc why didn’t Mabel and Dipper’s parents send them to their actual grandparents#maybe Shermy was an awful parent or something#or maybe he was busy with something else and Stanley was eager to take them#I imagine the call to ‘Stanford’ would’ve been like#‘hey I know you’re probably busy doing scientific research and all but#would you possibly be able to take Mabel and Dipper for the summer?’#and his reaction was just ‘YES. YES. ABSOLUTELY YES. WHEN CAN YOU SEND THEM OVER? CAN YOU SEND THEM OVER NOW???’#Or maybe they just remembered how happy Stan was when he saw Mabel and Dipper for the first time#supposedly he refused to give them back lol#so they’re like ‘hey he’s a lonely old guy. maybe he’d like to spend the summer with the kids’#bc they’re probably aware it’s a lot to ask for someone to take some kids for a WHOLE summer#also maybe Shermy just doesn’t live in a place suitable for kids#like ‘Stanford’ has a whole cabin in the woods#Shermy ‘I had to raise kids in an economic crisis’ Pines might live in an apartment or something#that or he’s dead.#how fucked up would it be if he ACTUALLY died in a car crash#and Stanley winces as his faked death didn’t age well

Journal 3’s references to Stan
Post-Portal Ford
Tumblr media
"How is it that I am back? It turns out that despite my warnings and possibility of global catastrophe, Stanley managed to re-activate the portal and bring me back to my home dimension. While his intentions might have been pure, he was just as careless bringing me back as he was knocking me through in the first place. He destroyed the portal in the process, risked endangering the entire fabric of reality, and even found himself the target of a federal manhunt by the U.S. governement (a logical progression from his days in the principal's office)."
Tumblr media
"When I first saw him, I assumed I had once again found myself in an alternate parallel dimension! Gone was the stubborn mullet-haired, frostbitten vagabond who had pushed me into the portal many years earlier, replaced by a wrinkly carnival barker with my father's face, fez, and girdle.
I'd spent the last 30 years contemplating what I might do if I saw Stanley again. Would I even be able to look him in the eye after what he did? Would I apologize for shutting him out of my life?"
Tumblr media
"As it turned out, instinct took over and I punched him right in the face. I feel kind of bad about that!
Face- Inherited Dad's nose and Mom's untrustworthy tongue.
Gut- I've spent the last 30 years keeping up an extensive exercise and diet regimen. Stanley... hasn't.
Suit- Dad's suit, which he gave me after graduation. He thought I'd wear it for my wedding. I thought I'd wear it to accept an award. Instead, Stanley has used it to trick tourists and sell key chains."
Tumblr media
"Machinery- Operated my portal like a monkey pretending to be a mechanic. Half of the instruments are held together with duct tape.
Yes, despite the extra pounds and wrinkles, Stanley is still the irresponsible, shortcut-loving overgrown child I remember from the past. Most unbelievable: his first thought upon seeing me again was to expect a thank-you - a THANK YOU - after destroying my life!
Even worse, he spent the last 30 years avoiding the law by faking his own death, impersonating me, and scamming the local townsfolks with a moneymaking ruse so absurd it would even make my profit-loving father blush. Once a cheater, always a cheater. And it turns out he's become a fraud for a living. I nearly fainted when I saw what he had done to..."
Tumblr media
[THE MYSTERY SHACK] "Unbelievable. Once a haven of scientific study, the cabin I built with my grant money has been transformed by Stanley over the years into a hokey freak show that mocks everything about the study of the paranormal!
Signage- There are legal disclaimers in almost-impossible-to-see fine print painted up and down nearly every entryway. It's a wonder Stanley hasn't been sued yet.:
“Walking around my old lab, I feel like a dead man’s ghost haunting a strange fun house mirror version of his past life, I resolve to take back my home and rebuild the life that Stanley has taken from me.”
Tumblr media
“The strangest thing about [Soos] is his utter idolization of my brother Stanley.”
Tumblr media
"At least there is some GOOD news: I am a great uncle! (Or "grunkle," as Stanley seems oddly insistent on saying.) Apparently, Sherman Pines's grandkods have been staying with Stanley for the summer. (It's hard to believe the parents would trust these kids with Stanley; they clearly thought he was ME!)"
Tumblr media
[Mabel] "Shares the family sweet tooth. Diet seems to consist solely of items with the word ‘gummy’ in them. I will need to discuss nutrition with Stanley.”
Tumblr media
[Dipper] “Observations: 1) Constantly sweating. Perhaps he takes after Stanley. (…) 4) Rank odor. Clearly hasn’t bathed recently. Stanley should never be put in charge of children!”
Tumblr media
“It is just as I feared; apparently, Stanley’s reckless use of the machine overtaxed it and ripped a tear in the dimensional fabric- the same way an overheated oven might burn a hole in kitchen linoleum.”
Tumblr media
“Containment dome- A home for the Rift. Admittedly, I was inspired by the snow globes in Stanley’s gift shop.”
Tumblr media
“When I tried to share my burdens with my brother, he knocked me into the portal, separating me from my home for 30 years.”
Tumblr media
“Stanley always mocked my love of [DD&MD], and even some of my college friends called it "Girlfriend Repellant.”“
Tumblr media
"Well, the harm in showing the [infinity sided die] to Dipper turned out to be quite large. During one of our games, my hotheaded brother got his hands on it and accidentally conjured this jerk.”
Tumblr media
“I’m proud to say that the Pines family was able to beat the wizard at his own game. Stan’s contribution was (of course) to cheat our way to victory.”
“Ironically, in the multiverse I’m just as wanted as Stanley! But my crimes had a noble purpose”
Tumblr media
“Stan would have loved this place, but it just made me depressed. Although I had a good run in the Gambling Dimension, the dimensional bouncers ended up kicking me out for counting cards! What are the odds?”
Tumblr media
“[The Oracle] looked deep into my eyes and said I had the face of the man who was destined to destroy Bill.”
Tumblr media
[A Better World] “On this Earth, I was never pushed into the portal by Stan. On this Earth, my brother listened to me and took Journal 1 away from Gravity Falls.”
Tumblr media
“I reentered the world of my youth to face a brother I had not seen in 30 years. My frustration was indescribable- once again, my brother’s actions had sabotaged everything I had ever worked toward.”
Tumblr media
“To help Dipper understand, I borrowed Stanley’s car, and we drove until we reached the town border of Gravity Falls.”
Tumblr media
“I suggested it would be a good time for Stan to take the kids on that road trip he’s been talking about while I puzzle over [the cracked Rift]”

Do you think you could do like God of chaos reader and Bill torturing the pines or just reader interacting with them in general?

Tumblr media
Bill x God of chaos reader + Pines family:
Since you are an omniscient being you instantly knew something would happen with the twins when the moved in for the summer, so you kind of just kept an eye on them for Bill.
Assuming you can't (or just don't want to) give Bill a physical form, you would be the one doing most tormenting as you would actually be able to Yap into the world
When you first met Dipper and Mabel you probably related to Mabel more, selfish, chaotic, willing to do anything for fun?? If that isn't the perfect embodiment body you I don't know what is.
Much like Bill you probably didn't understand the body between them "they're so different, how could they possibly BARE each other" takes you a while to wrack your brain on that one.
Either way readers probably just goofs with the twins since they're insignificant and fun to watch, almost like a show!
Stan and Ford are different however
Even though you and bill are a 'thing' he's still hung up on SIXER, you're not jealous, you're THE god of chaos... What could one puny old man have that made Bill so obsessed with him.. Not jealous or anything...
Not a good opinion on Ford
Surprisingly you don't hate Stan too much, he does remind you of Bill in some ways.
Now the tormenting hc's
Ford gets the blunt of it all, when he gets back from the portal your pretty quick to start messing with him
You aren't allowed to do anything rash because Bill still 'needs him'
Pages from important documents are gone, the ink from every paper dissolved into incoherent madness, etc
"Aw he likes these cute little cryptids? Aren't they just adorable... Woops they're extinct"
Oh and during weirdmaggedon where your ALLOWED to torture Ford with Bills full permission?? It's just horrendous.
Bill especially likes when you start showing Ford his past, every single mistake he made with bill, every single obvious red flag that he ignored, the look on his face is Hilarious.
For Stan and Ford you'd show memories of their childhoods and then suddenly go and steer it to Stan getting kicked out, Ford getting pushed in the portal, just the worst memories the bit he of them have
Stan individually, you'd show an alternate universe where Ford stayed, and they supported each other, sailing the Stan o' war, being close.. You let him summer in the feeling before ripping it away, playing fires horrified face as Stan pushed him in the portal, over, and over, and over again
For Dipper you'd let Bill take over, he seemed to hate him way more than you, Bill would mock him, etc, etc, but if we're going on the tormenting part he'd def replay memories of his parents yelling at each other, as Dipper overheard.
For Mabel, actually tormenting her, you'd gdo the same thing for everyone else, Dipper is with her, her friends are there, she has a cute boyfriend, everything is perfect , then suddenly, everything is dark and grey, lifeless, even her scrapbook, full of bright memories falls apart in her hands.
Hope you liked them, if you want anything changed just ask!!

HI. I bring Questions. >:]
How long are Dipper and Stan in the portal for? I remember you saying it somewhere a while ago but I can't remember
Does Mabel ever get sent back home? (Home being Piedmont)
Tell me more abt Ford. Just. Anything about him. How does he come to terms with the fact his identity was stolen for 30 years? And that he can't even ask Stan about it? Does he ever learn about the kids interactions with Bill? How does he feel about the new entries in his journal? Just. Tell me abt Ford.
Are there any characters you haven't introduced yet who will be important later on, canon characters or otherwise?
HI! THANK YOU FOR THESE QUESTIONS COPPER!! i was out of town so i wasn't able to answer these until now but i've literally been thinking about them all weekend!!
I. this is a question i've given a lot of thought, and i think i've settled with a date i'm pretty satisfied with! i think stan and dipper would be in the multiverse a MUCH shorter time than mabel and ford would be in your traditional drifting stars au. that would mainly be because ford knows where to get materials faster than stan or dipper would in the same scenario — i.e. crash site omega. but it'd still take a while because ford will have to figure out a way to pinpoint their exact location in the multiverse rather than just rebuilding the portal as according to its original design.
so, they'll be coming back right around early summer/mid summer 2014. right before mabel and dipper's sophomore year of high school. mabel would have gone through the 8th grade and freshman year without dipper :( so about 2 years overall — just in time for the twins' 15th birthday!
i have so many headcanons about the twins' high school experience post-portal. sheesh. so much angst potential. but dipper would have to get up to speed in time to enroll in school with mabel, and ford would definitely spend a lot of time tutoring dipper to get him ready for 10th grade. (no better person to teach a triangle-averse, traumatized teen trigonometry than a triangle-averse, traumatized old man!! yay for trauma-informed mathematics!)
II. THIS. THIS. THIS. The Parents. They Haunt Me.
i'm a sucker for realism in fics (i mean y'all know how i obsessed over the capacity of stan's hearing aid batteries for weeks and couldn't let it go) so working out the twins' parents' role in this was definitely a struggle. it needed to be realistic while also allowing very vital plot points to happen. like mabel staying in gravity falls, for one thing.
so many drifting stars fics don't really talk about the parents, and trust me, i get it! it's hard to write and enjoy ford and mabel bonding when you have two devastated, grieving, hysterical, protective parents trying to yank one party back to boring old piedmont where nothing ever happens and plot goes to die. but i also didn't want their parents to wind up being two shallow, underdeveloped background characters who couldn't care less about where their sole child ended up.
in my opinion, no reasonable, sane parent would let their daughter stay with an adult who was the sole party responsible when their son went missing. i also couldn't really see two grown adults from some random californian suburb suddenly becoming okay with the idea that their son went through an interdimensional portal, no less still letting their daughter stay there after hearing about it.
the only way i could see a parent letting this happen was if they decided somehow that staying home was somehow worse than all possible risks. sure, great uncle stanford let dipper go missing right under his nose, but at least he's apologetic about it. that 70-something year-old man is running around the woods at night looking for their son (apparently). that lumberjack girl is crying at the mention of him while swearing up and down that she'll protect their daughter with her life. there's a 20 year old kid who keeps shoving photos of their son and daughter on some fishing trip in their face and bringing homemade baked goods and dishes his abuelita made for them to take home with them.
and what's waiting for mabel in piedmont? nothing good. nothing resembling a healthy family environment. it's apparently bad enough that their normally spritely, energetic, kind, allergic-to-lying daughter is running away from home in the middle of the night. the pines parents are Not Okay, and they know mabel won't be okay with them either right now. there's a messy divorce and an alcohol problem sneakily brewing and until they can get their shit sorted out they'll have to trust ford to take after mabel for a while.
that's the focus of the next chapter! and it's coming real soon! a lot more will be delved into (it won't be as clear cut as them just shipping her away to gravity falls for 2 years) but mabel's here to stay! [TTDR: Nope!]
III. ahhh ford. i can tell you many things about ford.
mabel is just constantly, always talking about stan. what shows he watches. what color he begrudgingly admitted he liked best when they were finally able to take off his bandages after the Color Incident. the way he takes his coffee in the morning. it doesn't matter what. she just Keeps. On. Sharing. ford has no idea what to make of it at first. stan sacrificed the entire universe and put his own niece and nephew at risk and stole his identity and entire life. how is he supposed to forgive him for that? (he secretly wants to know more and never, ever interrupts mabel when she starts talking about him. blue's his favorite, too. the color of the sea.)
ford gets really freakishly good at acting like stan. he hates doing it but he knows he has to if he wants to keep their story going. when he has to make trips into town, he puts up with people asking him about the shack and dipper and why he's passed the mr. mystery torch over to soos. even though he hates that his identity has been entirely stripped from him, he has to admit that it's nice to be liked by so many strangers. his view of stan gets pretty warped because of this. he has to reconcile a lot with the stan he thinks knows (a.k.a his anger) and who he really is to those around him.
mabel is entirely responsible for making ford the soft, family man he was always destined to be. that will play a HUGE role in his and stan's reconciliation and the way he'll treat him when they come back :) (there will be no punching or arguing, thank you very much)
he learns about bill and the kids in the next chapter. he feels many things. none of them good. i'll let you guys read that for yourselves. i loveee when fics touch on ford's reaction to dipper's possession and bill's interactions with them, and ford will NOT be pleased to hear about any of this or bill's recent rendezvous in mabel's dreamscape
when he reads the entries in the journal, there's far less of the "i can't believe this kid scribbled over my life's work" than there was in canon. mainly because ford is deeply, palpably guilty that dipper got pulled into the portal HE created. here's a child that revered him and ended up losing a huge chunk of his adolescence because of it. he can't pin the blame on stan forever. not when he reads dipper's entries and sees the potential in a life that might be lost to bill or to the harsh realities of the multiverse. (he spends nights reading them and imagining what could have been if things didn't go so horribly wrong).
IV. yes! more important characters on the way. pacifica is the only one of them who is actually included in tags for now :) take from that what you will and for what that says for the future, hehe. super excited to introduce her and to write her dialogue !
there are also some other canon characters who are not tagged yet, because it'd be too big of a spoiler, but are MAJOR to the plot. super excited for those chapters!!
as for OCs, they are vital for plot progression and world building for a fic of this nature but they will never overshadow canon characters or be inserted in any major way. just a bit of fun world building coming for those guys!! i had a lot of fun writing acksyien for that short bit so expect more wacky side characters for dip and stan to meet!

I just had a thought: Everybody seems to be assuming that the Society of the Blind Eye (SBE) Dippers and Mabels in the Book of Bill were created during that summer. But what if they actually were what happened had Dipper taken that internship with Ford? I got the idea because the guys in the hoods look a good deal taller than the other Dippers and Mabels. I mean, it could just be the perspective, but I thought they looked like they might've gotten the chance to grow a bit more than the others. If you assume Left Hood is Mabel, (based off of their nose possibly being the same color as the rest of their face), it's also possible that she's lasted long enough in one timeline to get her braces off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alex Hirsch has said that Ford would've made the same mistakes with Dipper that he did with Fiddleford McGucket, so Dipper the Intern would've eventually ended up going insane like McGucket did. And McGucket originally founded the SBE as a direct consequence of Ford's bullshit. (Sorry Ford baby, I do love you-- but you are completely unfit to raise a technically-teenage boy full-time!)
I wouldn't put it past a traumatized older Dipper to figure out how to rebuild the memory gun (or maybe it never got destroyed in the first place?). At first he was just hoping to be able to sleep again but it takes its toll on his mind after awhile and he unwittingly ends up recreating the SBE (perhaps because he doesn't remember it-- or doesn't remember how bad it really was for people). Or alternatively, Ford, having been enabled for years by somebody who either can't or won't tell him no, proposes a truly horrible idea that even Dipper can't go along with. Dipper resorts to trying to wipe Ford's memory of the idea to ensure he never acts on it, but it fails and permanently ruins the relationship. Dipper is ashamed, alone, and afraid, so he uses the gun on himself so those bad memories of failure don't stop him from stopping Ford. It snowballs into repeated uses of the gun (turns out that forgetting what you're afraid of means forgetting why you don't use the gun more often!) until the poor guy can't bring himself to do anything in public without it. Dipper has enough perfectionist tendencies that, if something caused him to go off the rails, I could see him constantly using the memory gun to redo his interactions with people until they go exactly the way he's decided they're supposed to.
The dark path for Mabel would be worse in some ways. Imagine that this is a world where Mabel encouraged Dipper to take the internship instead of getting upset about it. Maybe she even unwittingly pressured him into accepting it when he was going to turn it down, because she thought it would be awesome for him, only to get hit with the horrible reality when the next summer rolls around and he's obviously Not Okay. She feels partially responsible and wishes he never had to experience any of the terrible stuff he alludes to, and that leads her to remaking/refinding the memory gun as the next best thing to making the bad things unhappen. Of course Ford figures out what she's done quickly, so she tried to use it on him to make him forget that internships and memory guns exist. It doesn't work and they get into a big nasty fight. Later Soos pops in to ask how things are going after some horrible event that Dipper no longer remembers, causing Dipper to regain his memory of the incident, so Mabel uses the gun on Soos and Dipper. Ford is angry, so Mabel bolts and hides from him, using the gun to prevent other people from reporting her whereabouts to him (and later McGucket, because you can bet Ford told him all about this).
It all spirals from there-- the key being that Mabel never uses the gun on herself because she's fully aware of how bad it is for people. She knows the SBE was bad, but reasons that it was bad because it was lead astray by the selfishness of people like Bud Gleeful rather than the fact that it existed to control people and dodge taking responsibility for anything. She self-rationalizes that PTSD and people actively seeking out monsters would be worse than the effects of the gun. Later she adds the rationalization that she's done it so often that there's no point in stopping because it would only mean that her targets would have to deal with both their trauma and the bad effects of the gun.
Either way, Gravity Falls ends up becoming like Lovecraft town where it's all nice-looking and stuff but you don't linger, go off the beaten path, or ask questions, lest you end up getting stuck there permanently like the Pines family. Just deliver the packages and go the fuck home before the sun comes down.
(Fuck, I forgot about the metal plate in Ford's head. Edited to account for that.)

Note
In regards to your post about possibly taking Gravity Falls requests. If you're down to write I'm down to read. I've been searching for a fic where Ford is filled in on Mabel's past trouble with the gnomes and Gideon and he is very not okay with it.
A/N: HOLY SHATT WAIT wait...thank you for this request! I love that prompt. Ford would definitely be super concerned about the messes she got into but glad she was able to pull away. He'd start keeping an eye out for anyone near Mabel that isn't someone he already knows. ALRIGHTY. Here you go!! My first request I've gotten! YAY.
Enjoy! :3
"Gnomes and a gremlin?"
Tumblr media
It was another summer and surprisingly normal day. The heat was fine to tolerate. Stan was doing his usual scamming with tourists, Mabel was out with Candy and Grenda, leaving Ford and Dipper alone in the living room. Dipper was sitting on the ground, switching through channels while Ford was sitting in Stanley's seat, writing down about whatever came to his smart mind.
Dipper glanced at the clock on the wall as it ticked. He wanted to play mini golf with Mabel, but since she had told him that she would be catching both Grenda and Candy up on her new crush, he figured it would be saved for another day.
Dipper sighed, placing the remote down as he looked up at the ceiling. "Man, Mabel's gonna be late today. She's gonna be gone all day, rambling about her new crush she met at the arcade the other day when we tagged along with Soos and Wendy."
"Wait, Mabel has another crush?" Ford asked as he took a moment to look at Dipper in disbelief.
"Yeah. The millionth one, but, at least, it's not like the few horrible ones she had earlier this summer." Dipper shrugged and sighed. Ford raised a brow. What did Dipper mean by that?
"Elaborate." Ford set his pen down and looked at Dipper with a serious look. Dipper sighed again, groaning as he buried his face into his hands.
"Uh..well, the first crush and boyfriend she had when we had just arrived here..was..unexpected." Dipper frowned at the thought. "His name was Norman. Well, their. Mabel and they all started dating. And well..turns out they were a bunch of gnomes disguised as a boy. They wanted to make her their queen..and well..when they revealed themselves to Mabel, she obviously didn't want to and turned them down. Their leader, Jeff, decided to take her by force. And a lot went down..we then got to a point where she got captured, I saved her, we got chased, and we defeated the gnomes. Basically, that was her first boyfriend. A bunch of gnomes."
Ford..was flabbergasted. His eyes were wide as if he had seen a ghost and his jaw dropped.
"WHAT!? GNOMES!?" Ford shouted as he dropped everything from his lap and hit the ground with a soft thud due to the carpet.
"That's not even as bad compared to Gideon." Dipper frowned even more as he got shivers at even mentioning that name
"..Gideon? Oh, man. I'm concerned at who your sister got into trouble with.."
"Trust me, I'm always concerned. Gideon was...something. Gideon was Grunkle Stan's arch enemy. Gideon badly wanted the Shack and they fought back and forth and all that mess. He also deeply liked Mabel..like..obsessive. She had agreed to go on a date with him when she genuinely didn't like him. Grunkle Stan wasn't happy about his great niece going out with his enemy. A lot went down. He lied to Mabel and did a lot of horrible things. He even kidnapped her with a huge robot when he had took the shack an-"
"HE KIDNAPPED HER!? Your telling me..a little gremlin like HIM..kindapped Mabel!? That is unbelievable!"
"Basically." Dipper shrugged.
Ford let out a big sigh as he looked exhausted. Like he had just gone through another 30 years in that portal.
"Gnomes and a gremlin? Christ, what messes did your sister get into." Ford murmured out as he leaned back. Dipper sighed. "I'd like to know too."
"Well, this is unacceptable. If I ever see that Jeff gnome or that little Gideon, I'll be sure to tell them to keep a massive radius away from my niece."
The next morning, Ford kept looking at Mabel. She quickly realized he had been staring hard at her while she knitted a new sweater for Waddles.
"Uh, Grunkle Ford? Is something wrong? You keep staring at me." Mabel murmured as she raised a brow.
Ford cleared his throat and looked away for a moment. "Apologies, Mabel. I'm just..I..who is this new crush of yours? Do you know what he really is?"
Mabel's eyes widened. "What?"
"Mabel, you dated gnomes disguised as a boy and a little gremlin named Gideon for Christ's sake!" Ford shouted out.
Mabel sat there for a few moments and letting out a nervous laugh. "Oh..yeah. I did. But I can reassure you I've been doing better at picking my crushes! This new boy is normal and NOT Gideon!"
"Glad to know.." Ford murmured. "Just..don't get into any more messes like that."
"Got it, Grunkle Ford!" Mabel grinned.
But, from that day on, Ford began to sometimes follow Mabel around and make sure whoever she was with..was normal. He was armed. Just in case.

This scene through Wendy’s POV 💚
youtube
I glance at the horizon and start to make my way over to my bike when Dipper stops me. “Look, Wendy, about earlier…in the heat of the moment, I might’ve said some dumb things and…can’t we just pretend none of that ever happened?” I turn around to see him facing away from me. “Please?” I can’t help feeling bad for the kid. He’s had a crush on me since forever, I mean he wasn’t slick about it. Not in the slightest. If I were like any other teen, I’d laugh and make fun of him before leaving on my bike but that’s not who I am. This kid is a real human, and I’ll be damned if I hurt a fellow human like myself. So, I slowly walk back to him and place a hand on his shoulder. “Dude…dude, it’s okay. I always…kinda knew.” I confessed. This takes him by surprise and he turns around to look at me. “Wait, you did?” He asks. “Yeah, man. I mean, you think I can’t hear that stuff you’re constantly whispering under your breath?” I said giggling, trying to cheer him up. This does the opposite effect however, as he hides his face with his hands and sits down on a nearby log. I sit down next to him. He’s so small compared to me. It was almost endearing, but I wasn’t going to tell him that. “Listen, Dipper. I’m like…SUPER flattered but…” I hesitated but decided to keep going because he needed to know. “I’m too old for you. I mean, you know that, right?” I said, trying to keep my voice as soft as possible to lessen the blow. Dipper groans and clutches his face with one of his hands. “Mabel said confessing would make me feel better.” He said. I take a moment to consider his words and decide the best course of action is to provide as much comfort as possible. “Well, how do you feel?” I asked. “Anxious, scared…” He scratches his arms. “…and kinda itchy.” That draws a laugh out of me. Dipper is an awkward kid, but that’s what I like about him. “Dude…don’t be itchy, man. Let me tell you something: this summer was SUPER boring until you showed up. I had more fun with you than like- practically anybody else, and if you stop being my friend, I would like- throw myself into the bottomless pit.” Every word I uttered was true. I just wanted him to know that this won’t change anything, and that it shouldn’t change anything. “So things…won’t be too awkward now?” He asks. “I just wrestled MYSELF, dude! THAT was awkward!” It’s a long story. “If you can handle that monster, you can handle a little awkwardness.” The words flow out of my mouth like a symphony. I don’t even know how I’m doing this. I’m not usually this cool. Hah, don’t get your head in the clouds, Wendy. Dipper lets a suppressed chuckle and we’re both just staring at eachother until he extends his hand. “Friends?” He says. “Yeah, dude! Friends!” I said, pushing him a little too hard than I intended and sending him off the log. I tense up for a moment but my shoulders slump once I see him rise. We both laugh together, this time it sounded more sincere. I reached my hand out and helped him up. I then realized I should probably be heading home now. So I walk off to my bike. “Oh, and hey, Dipper. See you for movie night tomorrow. Your place this time, okay?” I tie my helmet around my head, hop on my bike, and ride off into the sunset. I glance behind me and see Dipper’s face had changed into a somber expression. My heart tenses up and I look back at the sunset. Poor kid, he just got rejected. I just hope what I said was able to soften the impact.

Evil gravity falls idea: during the portal scene where Mabel says I trust you she gets sucked in like Fiddleford and swaps places with Stanford
And Dipper and Ford would both ostracize Stan for doing what they see as the stupidest decision possible. This of course pushes Dipper to become much closer to Ford and as the summer continues the brothers Pines don't grow closer together. Stan is kicked out and Dipper takes the apprenticeship.
Seeing no other options Stan goes on the road and tries once again to look for his next biggest idea, but is haunted by the fact that he may have killed his great niece. He is once again fully cut off from his family and while he has the money he received from the mystery shack he is Stan Pines once again.
Dipper follows Ford's footsteps and learns more about Gravity Falls. His parents of course say yes that their child can take a homeschooling with the guy who HAS 12 PHDS. Dipper starts to follow all too well and he begins to delve deeper and deeper. The two start to find more about the Nightmare Realm, but at least it is safe from Bill's hands.... unless they didn't have unicorn hair. While the two are great in their problem solving they were never able to even summon the gate as Grenda and Candy stopped talking to Dipper when he revealed he let Mabel get killed. Dipper and Ford continue to try and work as they cut more and more people out for acting too Bill-ish. Dippers mind is scanned and he is protected from Bill, but there are other dangers to be found.
And finally our dear Mabel. Of course Bill didn't initially know that she was in the Nightmare dimension, but it was only a matter of time before he found out. It doesn't take two braincells to figure out a place called the Nightmare Dimension was probably home to some nasty people. What does take a lot of skill is evading Bill and talking with refugees. With only her will and her creativity Mabel starts to do her best making it along in the nightmare dimension. She grows a hate for her trusting and kind nature as it was the exact thing that likely got her family killed. The portal did exactly what Dipper and her head said it would. She would of course try to stay positive, but how long can you stay positive when, you're pretty sure, no one is coming to save you. She tries to get in contact with people, but after a long time of hoping there is nothing in the end. Ford says it is too dangerous to open the portal again and Dipper never can push himself enough to open it. Not to mention the fuel it requires.
Though bad ends don't just end. The world continues on. Bill realizes just how close he is to getting this portal open. He knows how gullible Mabel can be and so he finally makes deals with the remaining Pines. Mabel was easier. He just had to tell her a half truth of promising he would not open the portal himself or personally invade using the portal if she joined his side and said a few words, but Stan was harder. He was a con man and the world's greatest one at that. Bill would have to do something he never realized was so hard. He would have to tell a whole truth. It was the one thing that Stan would never be able to figure out. He just had to give Stan what he wanted. He wanted to pilot Stan's body for 30 minutes and then he would make Stan a god in Weirdmaggeddon. He would give Stanley everything he ever wanted with no extra cost. He wanted to preserve his own life and make their universe something he thought would be greater.
At the lowest point in his life Stanley finally says yes and the convergence at the Mystery Shack begins. Mabel is ready to slip through and set the portal to the highest setting as Stanley drives back to confront his brother. Bill takes over just outside of the Mystery Shack and disables Ford immediately before threatening to kill Dipper and doing what he needs to to break the dimensional rift.
Is this anything y’all I would love to hear ideas or if I am doing this fanfic thing correctly

Wolverine pussyfucker here to fill in gravity falls lore info!
Stan got kicked out and sold sham products (Stan-vac: it sucks more than anything!) until he got a letter from ford telling him "hey pls pull up to my reclusive shack"
WELLLLLL FORD HAS BEEN BUSY!!
He accidentally summoned a dream demon from the second dimension named bill ciphwr and entered a toxic yaoi relationship where bill would use ford to try and get a physical manifestation while manipulating (and lowky falling in love) and ford was in love with him and referred ti him as a muse
Untillll they broke up and bill went a little wacky
So bill was using ford to build a portal to let him into the third dimension, byt ford was like "shit i need to destroy this" after they broke up so he was like "stan can you take my journals where i detail expressly how to build this portal and go a thousand miles away and never talk to me again"
Stan was pissed because "we havent talked since we were teens and now u want me to leave!? Frick you!!" And accidentally pushed ford INTO said portal, ending up with ford going through universes in an attempt to destroy bill and/or get home
Stan was like "shitballs i need to bring my brother home" and spent thirty years pouring over 2/3 journals and figuring out complex math and science while making as much money as possible to pour it into fixing up the portal because he loved his brother so much
WELLL he had 2 great nieces/nephews named mason/dipper and mabel, who pulled up to gravity falls when their parents were fighting one summer and dipper found the missing journal so stanley was like "hey =) fork it over =) i have GYAT to finish the portal"
MEANWHILE ford was becoming hot and doing interdimensional mercenary stuff and finally he was about to kill bill cipher when the portal opened back up and he was sucked back into gravity falls
But yeah stanley stole fords identity to fix the portal to bring ford home
If you held me at gun point and asked me what the show was about I’d never be able to come to this conclusion Jesus Christ I thought it was about two kids and a weird old man never ever would I guess this is the plot behind it
ALSO THE ROMANCE IS REAL?? I THOIGHT IT WAS A JOKE!! AND HE TRIED TO KILL HIM AG THE END??
And dear god poor Stan his whole life he’s just trying to make up for mistakes he’s made and they aren’t even small like hey get better at communicating with your brother no it’s hey fix this portal to bring ur brother home😭

Ericka: It's not super obvious especially with her cheery and bouncy persona but if you really start looking at her backstory it's pretty messed up. Raised as a monster huntress for as long as she can remember, her parent mostly treating her like a soldier and not being the warmest person when she clearly craves connection, high standards, her fear of doing something her family disproves of being raised mostly in isolation practically growing up on The Legacy, her parent being able to kill her with little remorse...not to mention her being partly responsible for an attempted genocide. She doesn't show it, but she IS messed up.
Lucy and Simon: No, not really. Most of their issues is just family stuff, discrimination, etc. But they have as loving family and not NEARLY the trauma Mavis, Ericka, Drac, or Dennis do. Simon does get picked on some and has some anxiety. Both Lucy and Simon are ND, queer, mixed species as well as multicultural. But most of their trauma is GENERATIONAL. Particularly from Drac's loss of his wife due to human fear, but Ericka's Van Helsing trauma has it's echoes too. Even so, they're probably the least traumatized members of the pack. I would not say they have an inherently tragic backstory.
Alice: Oh, HELL yes. Both her identities have been through alot: Alice was basically rejected by fans to the point of her dolls almost being destroyed - all this after being told she could be bigger than Bendy. And Susie was rejected by Joey as the voice of Alice with no notice...and after she seemed to have a thing for him too. And her other possible love interest, Sammy, didn't notify her of the change either. Then LATER, there's the implication she was killed and corrupted by the ink, possibly attacked by the ink demon, to the point of her killing amd cannibalizing other characters to fix her own half melted body. And at least our version of Alice was sharing a body with Susie the whole time, forced to go along with all this. BOTH Alice and Susie are traumatized as heck.
Audrey: Again, heck yes. Mainly because of the "Killed by Wilson and thrown into the horrors" thing, but she also had her father die twice - once being crushed to death in front of her while she was in the body of the Ink demon. The first time had already possibly led to a mental block. And THEN, Wilson lied to her and tried to kill her AGAIN to make her a god and further his own ends. VERY traumatized.
@lovelylivelyv 's Jack Nephalem: A bit, though less so than his mother and "Aunt." In his original verse, he's the reincarnated soul of Wally Franks, though he doesn't really remember being Wally much. He's had to see what happened to his father and mother as they were corrupted into the Ink Demon and Twisted Alice. This trauma led to him taking on his Hijack form, and if it weren't for Henry things may have gone worse for him. That said, he's more stable and sane than most characters, and fiercely loyal to his friends and desire to help his family. Matter of fact, his biggest fear is losing his parents to perma-death. Especially due to Wilson's plans. He's somewhat traumatized, but hides it well. He probably has the best time handling the inky hell that is the Cycle. His WIR-Verse version is much less traumatized, being merely the bio son of Bendy and Alice...although few get out of the Cycle without SOME form of trauma.
Mabel: I wouldn't say her backstory is inherently tragic beyond the possible child of divorce aspect and worry of Dipper leaving, but I would say she's DEFINITELY traumatized by the events of her summer in Gravity Falls. Particularly her involvement in Weirdmaggedon. Now, I don't bash her as much as the fandom tends to. I can't really blame the kid for this. She was manipulated by Bill and thought she was being helped by a friend. But her actions DID lead to Weirdmaggedon.
Ford: Oh, lord yes. The toxic relationship with Bill, Stan, and Fidds. The bullying for his hands, the portal incident and 3 decades afterwards. The being the one to "kill" his brother with the memory gun. Him blaming himself for everything. Feeling like he's destined to be alone. Trauma from Bill...there's ALOT.
Bill: Heck yes. Mainly from the Euclidian massacre he inadvertently caused and clearly sent him on a dark path, along with the medical trauma as bad bullying prior. But alot of other things too. Of course, this is kind of balanced our by his history of lying, manipulation, abuse, and wanton destruction. But he's definitely both tragic and traumatized.
Fidds: OH, where do I BEGIN with this one? His whole relationship with Ford, the divorce, the estrangement from Tate, the Memory gun and the society of the blind eye...he destroyed his mind so much even BILL couldn't stand to be in it. And it took him about 30 years as the town laughing stock to get his memories back and start putting himself together. He, Stan, and Ford are probably the MOST messed up characters in the SHOE
Mr. Ring-A-Ding/Lux Imperator: Possibly tragic, not sure if Traumatized. Basically he's a god in the form of a cartoon character that got locked away for 3 months, never going outside, and he feeds on light (with an expressed preference for Moonlight and Sunlight.) He was also pretty eager to make himself a body, get out and cause nuclear destruction, AND at least expressed feeling alone in the world. So I can imagine being cooped up for 3 months feeding off movies kinda got to him a bit. Thankfully he had Mr. Pye and his wife for company, but still. That SAID, it's hard to tell if he actually had trauma about any of it being a god of light and chaos beyond mortal understanding. He did finally get what he wanted: All the light he could ever want, and ultimately became one with the light if creation at the expense of his ego death. But he was quite happy when he went and seemed to have no hard feelings. It's also unknown if he's truly GONE or if he can come back if he so chooses. Honestly one of the best endings for a malevolent Doctor Who bad guy I've seen, even if it DID hit you in the feels. At the least he's alot more likeable and relatable than Bill Cipher even with similar energy. Though not quite as tragic and traumatized.
Eclipsa: Definitely a tragic backstory, though she hides her trauma well under her often cheery demeanor. Basically hated for falling for a monster and merely studying the dark arts to the point of being locked away in a crystal for 300 years and having her daughter taken away and raised by a robot in an evil princess reform school. Has a very upbeat attitude but has learned mostly to do what she has to for her and her family which can lead her to but heads with others and make her seem creepy and self centered.
Meteora: One of the most DEVISIVE here. On one hand, she was raised by an evil robot princess reform school headmistress to hide her peculiarities and brainwashed as well to the point she couldn't remember she wasn't fully human (or mewman) And had her rightful throne taken away. Clearly ending up with self image issues as well as messed up morals. But she also destroyed Mewni in her rampage and had a fixation on Marco after he started a rebellion at her school. VERY repressed and damaged this one. And her fandom perception is often either "She's evil and should have died" or "She did nothing wrong."
Shego: I do feel she's more affected by leaving her brothers and starting a life of villainy than she lets on, clearly wanting respect and a place she can be herself. Not sure I'd say she's inherently tragic though.
Cora: ...I mean she had her parents kidnapped and almost got fed on and became a ghost tied to the Other World if she had agreed to get the buttons. And then The Other Mother tried to almost KILL her to stop her from freeing her parents and the ghost kids. She saw Other Wybir get his mouth sewn into a smile. Even without that she clearly doesn't trust grownups much. I wouldn't nessecarily say her story is inherently tragic: things get better with her parents and she does defeat the Beldam. But like...yeah, definitely traumatized.
Bloo: Definitely yes. @lovelylivelyv has talked about this more than me, but the short version is Mac being forced to give him away has made him worry he's replaceable and worthless. Ontop of this, he's treated as a jerkish troublemaker by most everyone in the cast except Mac.
Caine: Clearly has some issues with needing to be seen as a good caretaker for the player characters. He starts glitching during he and Zooble's therapy session when he reveals if he's not entertaining and good at keeping their needs meant, he doesn't know who he is. Beyond that, it's hard to say.
Pomni: Like Audrey, one of the most tragic TADC characters. Basically a young lady who's been thrown into an existential horror trying not to go insane.

You caught his attention quickly, well, to be fair you catch everyone’s attention quickly
You stood out a lot in California, for your clothes but also because of your personality
Maybe if you had moved to Gravity falls you would’ve been stuck with Robbie instead
Your family had built a house on a hill, similar to the Northwest family, the only difference being your family’s house looked… old, and very out of date, but that’s why your family loved it
Dipper had seen you sitting on the sidewalk looking in a book and that was it for him
He didn’t approach you, not like he needed too you already knew he was staring at you
However, when you both had gotten to school and Dipper saw you in his class he knew it was for sure over for him
The teacher had been asking everyone ice breakers, trying to get to know them
“ Y/n would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself?” Your teacher had asked, and suddenly all eyes were on you.
“ No, I think I’m quite fine.” You replied, tone dry and filled with a uninterested look back down to your book.
“ Y/n I think it would be nice for us all to get to know you. There’s no need to be shy.” The teacher said smiling, trying her hardest to get you to talk. To no avail.
“ If you insist. My name is Y/n, I hate everything and a fun fact for you all is bother me again the only thing you’ll be asking yourself is where your bones went while I dip you in acid limb by limb.”
Dipper blushed, partially out of fear and partially out of infatuation
After class you had been sitting in the library all alone for lunch. You had a book in front of you and a sandwich next to you.
“ This is it Dipper. Time to talk to her.” He thought, before walking over. As he reached for the chair in front of you, you stood up putting your hand out to stop him.
“ No I am not interested being your friend. No I do not want to do any extracurricular activities with you. I will not be in your presence longer than I need to be. I’ve seen you before and I wish I would’ve gouged my eyes out that very movement. Do not try to talk or approach me again or it will be your immortal soul that pays the price. Laisse-moi tranquille. Have a horrible day.”
With that you took your things and left, leaving a confused and heart-broken Dipper in your wake. But this doesn’t stop him, not one bit.
It makes him want you even more.
He stares at you a lot, and you know this, and every time your eyes meet you’re sure to give him a death stare, to which he looks away.
Unfortunately for you, your teacher had paired you both up for a project. You wanted to die, per usual. Dipper was over the moon.
“ So when do you want to get started on the project?” Dipper asked as you both sat in silence. While the rest of the groups were chatting.
“ As soon as possible. I fear being around you too long will infect me with the one disease I am not immune too.” You stated, never blinking once. Dipper raised his brow, nervous as he began o sweat a bit.
“ Um, can I ask what disease?” Dipper asked, not sure if he really wanted to know.
“ Socializing.”
It takes you a long time to even have a conversation that lasts more than two minutes with Dipper
He caught your interest by mentioning an abandoned house he was going to check out with Mabel
it caught your attention
and dipper noticed
he was so happy to finally be able to do something with you, to bond
“ Do you want to come with us?” Dipper asked, as you both were cleaning up from your project
“ Hm. I suppose. It’s either that or I rein-act the time I first went to summer camp.” You replied, earning a confused look from Dipper.
“ What happened?” Dipper asked
“ I burned the pilgrim set to the ground and escaped.” You replied, before walking away from him and out of the classroom with your things
You know he likes you
You also know that gets extremely nervous whenever you both are close to one another
“ I assume it’s because he’s close to death whenever we’re together.” You tell your mother, as you pack your bag to get ready to go to the abandoned house
“ Have fun sweetheart. Bring back a corpse if you can. I need new decore for my dining room.” You say as your mother kisses your cheek.
When you met with Dipper and his sister, Mabel
“ Hi! I’m Mabel, Dipper’s twin.” She said excitedly, before going to hug you. You stopped, holding your hand out with a scared look.
“ I don’t hug.” You said, before she giggled.
“ Aww don’t be shy, everyone hugs.” She said smiling before coming closer to try and hug you.
“ Mabel really,” Dipper said, grabbing her by the shoulders and turning her to face him
“ She said she doesn’t hug leave her alone.”
You were secretly grateful Dipper interrupted his sister, as you all made your way into the abandoned house
“ I’m going to the basement.” You said, earning a surprised look from Mabel
“ Isn’t that the worst part of the house?” You asked.
“ Yes. I will rejoice in despair as I become one with the spirits left behind.” You said, descending down the stair case.
“ I’ll go with you.” Dipper said not leaving room to retaliate
“ Is it dead?” Dipper asked as you both came across an unmoving mouse
“ Does it matter?” You asked, walking past it. As you got to a dark corner you took your bag and placed it in front of you,
“ Thing. Grab that mouse and put it in this jar, don’t let Dipper see. Something is off about this house, that mouse might help us know why.” You say, letting thing sit on the ground.
“ Oh also,” You said, thing standing still
“ Something is weird with Dipper. He’s overly clingy. follow him for a while and report back.”
Thing waved his hand around, saying he wasn’t going to stalk a child
“ What if he’s a shape shifter? We would never know if you don’t find out. stop whining and go.” Begrudgingly thing left, and you emerged from the shadows, watching Dipper look at the walls of the basement.
‘I know there’s something off about you Dipper pines.’ You thought.

Waiting For You Part Five (Ford Pines x Reader) What’s Lost Isn’t Forgotten
“Brother!” Stan calls and walks towards Ford. Ford unexpectedly punches him in the face and begins arguing with him.
She takes a step forward and calls Ford’s name. He looks over at her and his face turns to disbelief, and he lets go of Stan.
He whispers her name. “Is it really you?” All she can do is nod and she runs forwards to hug him. He lifts her and spends her around. “I can’t believe it.” He sets her down and moves his hands to cup her face to pull her up for a kiss. “It really is you.”
Their tender moment was interrupted by Mabel.
She pulls away from Ford, red in the face, having forgotten the kids and Soos were even down here.
Ford is introduced to Mabel, then Dipper who freaks out. He spouts off about how he has so many questions and mentions how he can’t believe you’re married to the author of the journals.
She sits and listens to their whole ‘mysterious backstory’ as Mabel calls it. Enjoying hearing the story from both sides. After the whole situation was over Stan sent the kids off to bed.
She walked them upstairs to give the brothers some time alone to talk. Dipper bombarded her with questions that she happily answered. “No more secrets from me, promise.” She used her finger to cross her heart.
She tucked Dipper into bed then Mabel. “Thank you, Mable.” She smiled sweetly as Mabel looked confused.
“For what?” Mabel askes.
“You said you’d find me a boyfriend by the end of the summer, and if it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have my boyfriend back.” She smiles as Mabel's eyes grow wide, as does her smile.
“Thank you too, Dipper. If you had never found the journal we wouldn’t have been able to get him back either. I’ll make sure you get to ask him plenty of questions soon, alright?” She promised and wished them a goodnight.
She comes back down the stairs to see the two brothers arguing and frowns as Stan storms away from him. Walking up to Ford she wraps her arms around him and he does the same. She breathes a sigh of relief.
“I’ve missed you so much,” she whispers.
“I’ve missed you too, more than I can say with words.” He leans down to kiss her forehead.
“Let’s go to sleep.” She takes his hand and starts walking to the bed room.
He turns to go into his old room but she stops him. “There’s no bed in there anymore. When I, um, we lost you, it was too painful to stay in there alone.”
He nods in understanding and follows her to her room. She closes the door behind her and he pulls her into another hug. “Did you really wait for me? For thirty years?”
“Oh course I did, Stanford.” She looks up at him concerned.
“It’s just that, you could have started a new life. You could have had a family.” His face is sad, almost guilty.
“I didn’t want to, Ford. Not without you.” She brought her hand to show him the ring he gave her. “You’re my family.”
He only nods before leaning down to kiss her. She leans into the kiss but feels tears begin to fall from her eyes, overwhelmed with emotions. Pulling away she wipes her cheeks, but sees that Ford is crying as well. They lock eyes and laugh, both wiping at their tears.
“We’ve both had a very emotional day. Let’s go to sleep.” She walks over to the dresser and digs around for a moment. “These are yours.” She states. “I’m not sure they’ll still fit though you look… More built.” She smirks.
He takes the clothes from her and watches and she begins to change into her night shirt. His eyes can’t pull away as she pulls her shirt over her head. She’s still as beautiful as the day he disappeared, but her body is different. It’s softer, with more age lines, but he feels awestruck by her beauty.
“Ford, you’re staring.” She looks embarrassed. “I know I’m not as young and fit as I was but-”
“You’re absolutely stunning. You look different, but in the most amazing way possible.” He assures her.
She nodded and finished changing. Her face turned mischievous as she looked at him. “Now it’s my turn to watch.”
He can’t help the heat that rises to his cheeks. “Uh, right.” He sits down and takes off his boots, and stands to remove his sweater. “Listen, I… The dimensions I visited weren't always friendly. I have some scars.”
“Ford, it’s alright. I expected as much.” She lays a reassuring hand on his shoulder.
She thought he would have scars, but didn't expect so many. “Oh, Ford.” She whimpers.
Almost his entire torso is covered in scars. She lays a hand over his peck and runs her fingers over one long scar. He sighs at her touch. “I’m so sorry,” she sniffs.
He takes her hand from his chest and raises it to his lips to kiss it. “Don’t think too much of it. For every hostile being I meet, there were just as many friendly ones who helped patch me up.” He slips his shirt on over his head, finding it just a little tight, but would work for the night.
She climbs into bed, with Ford right behind her, and snuggles close to him. He wraps his arms around her and holds her tight. “I love you, goodnight.”
“I love you, Ford. I’m so glad you’re back.” She yawns before falling asleep.
He wakes up from a nightmare and looks around the room. Although a little unfamiliar he knows he’s home. Looking at his side he sees his love gone from his side. His heart still beating fast from his dream he starts to panic, and calls her name.
Right as he does she walks back into the room and closes the door. “What’s wrong?” She quickly makes her way over to him. “I’m sorry, I was just in the bathroom. Are you alright?” Sitting back on the bed she pulls him close to her.
He sighs at the touch. “Just a bad dream is all. Have them quite frequently.”
“You can always wake me up, okay?” She coos, and kisses him on the shoulder. “Can you go back to sleep or do you need to stay up for a minute?”
He can’t help as a yawn escapes him. “I can sleep.”
They cuddle back together, but she stays awake until she is sure he’s asleep.
When she wakes up the sun is shining in through the curtains. She can feel the even breaths Ford is breathing under her cheek.
She shifts her head to look up at his sleeping face. Examining all the details that are the same, and how it’s changed. He still has a strong jawline, if not stronger. The hair on his head is graying, much like hers, and he has wrinkles under and beside his eyes.
She cant help herself from reaching up and running her hand across the stubble on his jaw. His eyes are still closed but he smiles.
He takes her hand and kisses it. “Good morning.”
She responds by moving off his chest up to his mouth to kiss him. “It’s a very good morning.” He kisses her back. “Maybe the best morning ever.”
He chuckles and she can feel his chest rumble under her hand. “I couldn’t agree more.”
Running her thumb over his stubble she smiles. “I can’t believe you got more handsome.” Ford’s cheeks turn red and he looks away. She laughs. “I see you’re still just as bashful.”
“I was just thinking the same thing about you.” He pulls her into another kiss, then another, and another. Sitting up, he pulls her into his lap. Now it’s her turn to blush.
There’s a knock on the door and Mabel’s voice sounds from the other side. She calls her name, but adds ‘Graunt’ in front of it. “Grunkle Stan is taking us to the diner! He said if you wanna come be in the car in five minutes or we’re leaving you!” Then her footsteps are heard running down the stairs.
Ford looks down at the woman in his lap. Her hand is held over her mouth, but he can see the impossibly wide smile behind it. “She called me her graunt…” Her heart feels so impossibly full from the simple word.
“Well you technically are.” Ford chuckles. “That seems to mean a lot to you. You must really care for those two.”
She nods. “Ford, they are such incredible kids. I’m excited for you to get to know them more. Dipper reminds me so much of you.” Ford frowns, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. “What’s wrong?”
“When Stan and I were talking last night, well, it was more of arguing, he told me he wanted me to stay away from the kids. I agreed. I also told him he can stay here until the end of the summer with the kids, but after he has to leave, and all this Mystery Shack nonsense ends.” He informs her.
“I, but Ford…” She was unsure what to say. It all seemed so unfair, so she decided to tell him. “That seems unfair to me.” She moved to sit on her knees next to him and took his hand in hers. “I might be being selfish but I just got you back, and now you want Stan to leave? We worked so hard to bring you back, Ford, and while you were gone Stan took care of me.” She sighs. “I, Ford, I was ready to give up but he wouldn’t let me. The only reason he opened the shack was to get money. I was spending every second of every day in the basement. Stan made sure I ate, and slept. He made sure I was taken care of.”
Ford scans her face. “Were you two…” He can’t finish his thought, but she gets what he means.
She can’t help but laugh. “Ford, you’re brother and I were nothing more than friends.” She thinks for a second. “We kissed once and it was terrible,” she laughs again. “But beside you, Ford, he’s my best friend, and your brother. All I’m asking is that you just think about reconsidering.”
His face is stern but he nods. “I’ll think about it.”
“That’s all I ask.” She kisses him. There’s a squeal of car tires from outside signaling Stan and the kids are gone. “So how would you like to spend the rest of the morning?” She smirks.
“Well, I’d like to check on the portal, and my experiments.” He says thinking aloud.
She laughs and moves to straddle his lap, moving her hands to his chest, and kissing his collar bone. “I was thinking we could make up for lost time.”
“I like that idea much more.” He pulls her close.
----------
It’s midday when they make their way down into the lab. As Stan requested, Ford avoids the kids.
They stand in front of the portal.
“This was such a risky move.” He says without thinking.
“It was a risk I had to take.” She doesn’t apologize.
“I’m…” he wraps her in a hug. “I appreciate you getting me home, I really do. I thought I’d never see you again. However,” he looks back up at the portal. “We have to destroy this.”
She agrees and they get to work.
They have the portal about halfway deconstructed when one of the higher up panels starts to sway. Ford notices it moving and looks up, right as it breaks away and begins to fall. She is standing right below it.
“Watch out!” Ford dives towards her and pushes her out of the way, the metal panel making contact directly with his head and he falls to the ground motionless.
“Ford?” A small pool of blood has begun collecting around his head. “Oh my god Ford!” She yells and shakes his shoulder to stir him.
Tears begin to form in her eyes right as he opens his eyes. He looks at her and smiles.
“Ford?” She asks again.
He sits up and grabs his head. “Are you alright?” He asks.
She looks at him in disbelief before moving to check where his head is wounded. “Are you insane? I’m fine, you’re the one who's bleeding!”
“Hey, hey!” He takes her face in his hands forcing her to make eye contact. “I’m alright really, look.” Ford knocks on his head next to where he’s bleeding and there is a loud metallic banging.
She’s still looking at his eyes wide with confusion.
“A had a metal plate installed in my head that way Bill could never enter my mind again. It’s just a little cut, promise I’m alright.” He brushes a tear away from her cheek.
“God, Ford,” she sniffs. “I just got you back. I thought I was going to lose you again.” She pulls him in for a hug, not worrying about the blood that seeps down onto her sleeve.
“You can’t get rid of me that easily.” He jokes and she lightly smacks his shoulder.
She pulls away from the hug to give him a passionate kiss, which he is happy to return.
“Come on, let’s get you cleaned up.” She takes his hand and pulls him up. His balance wavers and he grabs onto her shoulder. She helps him sit down in a chair and hurries back with the first aid kit, which she always made sure was well stocked with how much Stan hurt himself.
She begins cleaning his head wound. “You really have to be more careful.” She can’t help but scold him. One hand holds his cheek steady, he doesn’t move and Ford leans into her touch.
“I’d rather I get hurt over you anyday.” He doesn’t apologize.
“I just got you back.” She sighs.
Ford brings his hand up to caress one on his cheek. “I just got you back as well.” He reminds her.
She pauses, not having really thought of it that way, then continues cleaning his wound. “I guess even after all this time we are both just as hard headed.”
When she's done stitching his cut shut she kisses the top of his head for good measure. “There, that should be good as long as you don’t take any more metal panels to the head.”
He beams up at her. “How did you get so good at that?”
“Stan hurt himself a lot while we were working on the portal. I got used to stitching him up since it was faster and cheaper than going to the hospital every other day.” She gives him a sad smile. “Although you were a lot less whiny than Stan normally is.”
He hums in thought. “Maybe taking a break from the portal for a minute would be a good idea.”
“I agree. I’m going to go change out of this bloody shirt first.” She motions down at her blood soaked sleeve.
He grabs her arm as she begins to walk away. She can see the uncertainty on his face. Leaning down she places a gentle kiss to his lips.
“I’m only going upstairs. I won’t be far.” She looks into his eyes and he nods. “Plus I'm sure you brought back some experiments you need to check on.
She makes her way upstairs and almost makes it to her room before she bumps into Stan.
“Geez, kid, watch where you’re-” He stops talking and grimaces at the blood on her sleeve.”
She looks down and realizes what the problem is. “Oh, don’t worry it’s not mine.”
Stan’s face doesn’t look any less concerned.
“Ford’s fine too, just a little accident. You know how it goes.” She can’t help but laugh.
Stan grumbles something then walks away. An unusually harsh treatment from her normally warm best friend. She brushes it off though and quickly changes. When She’s back downstairs she finds everyone hanging out in the gift shop.
She greets them but only Mable acknowledges her. Stan’s head shoved deep in a newspaper and Dipper’s in Ford’s journal. There’s a moment of silence before Ford bursts out of his lab with a weird octopus-like creature stuck to his arm.
She tries to keep Dipper and Mable behind her for safety but they both peer around her eager to see their new Grunkle. Ford captures the creature easily enough and starts to head back to the lab, but Dipper’s right on his trail offering to help.
Ford turns down his offer before closing the door. Stan gives Dipper a lecture about staying away from Ford.
Dipper points at his newly titled Graunt. “But she gets to spend time with him and do dangerous stuff.”
She frowns. “Dipper, I’m an adult and have been doing this for a long time.”
“You’re still going to watch the season finale of Duck-Tective with us Friday, right?” Mabel checks.
“Absolutely. I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
The next week is spent helping Ford disassemble the portal and helping Stan with the shack. She getting ready for bed when Ford comes into the room beaming and gabbing about playing DD&MD that day.
She smiles and sits on the bed. “I’m glad you're spending time with him. He reminds me so much of you.” her smile falls for a second. “But didn’t Stan ask you to stay away from the kids?”
Ford is taking his boots off and he freezes and thinks. “Stan will just have to get over himself.”
She sighs and lays back onto the bed. “I know you and Stan didn’t have the best relationship before you went into the portal, and I knew it wouldn’t be magically fixed when we got you back, but I did hope it would be a little bit better.” She feels the bed shift as Ford sits next to her.
“Mine and Stan’s relationship has been complicated for a long time. Him bringing me back isn’t going to fix it overnight.” He places his hand on hers.
“I know but,” she sits up with a huff. “I feel like neither of you are trying. When summer ends I don’t want to lose my best friend. Stan means a lot to me, and he’s your brother. I wish you would both just try.
Ford looks almost mad for a second before his face softens. “Come here.” He pulls her into his lap. “For you, I’ll try. Promise… Well… I’ll at least try to be civil.”
She looks at him with a pout before she buries her head in the crook of his neck. “Fine.” She whines with a yawn.
The next day she's ready to watch the season finale of Duck-Tective with Mabel, Stan, and Grenda. She smiles to see Ford is sitting cross legged on the ground playing DD&MD just like they did in college and spending time with his great nephew. However her smile fades when Stan and Ford begin to argue. The argument turns for the worst when Stan throw Ford’s bag on dice on to the ground and causes them to scatter. Then they have to go on a ridiculous fantastic quest to save Dipper and Ford.
Afterwards Stan apologizes to Dipper and it warms her heart. He even says it's okay if Dipper spends time with Ford. She was a little disappointed Ford didn’t join them to watch Their show but she understood. After it was over Dipper went to find Ford.
She sat at the table with Stan to have a drink.
“You were very sweet today.” She almost teases Stan.
“Think you got me mistaken with someone else.” Stan grunts as he sits.
“No, the fact you changed your mind to let Dipper spend time with Ford is really sweet. I don’t think I have to tell you how similar they are. Plus I think it’ll be nice that Dipper can ask him questions himself instead of him asking me to ask Ford questions.” She smiles over her glass at Stan.
Stan frowns deepens. “Didn’t do it for Ford. Did it for Dipper. Ford still hasn’t told me thank you, and I haven’t forgotten.”
She groans. “Why do you two have to be like this?!” She almost shouts. “You’re both so stubborn and hard headed. If you two could just sit down and talk about your feelings like real adults I don’t think we’d have a problem.”
“Not until he tells me thank you!” Stan raises his voice back.
She slams her hand on the table and stands up. “He hasn’t even told me thank you, Stan! He’s appreciative to be home but he’s still upset we risked this whole universe for him!”
Stan stands up and opens his mouth to say something but closes it. He is absolutely fuming as he storms away from you.
She stands there for a second more before sitting back down with her face in her hands. Quiet tears fall down her face and she cries alone for a few minutes. Then she feels a hand on her back.
“Darling, are you crying? What’s wrong?” Ford’s warm, wide hand begins to stroke reassuring circles on her back.
She wraps her arms around his neck and brings him in for a hug. “I’ve just had a lot of big emotions this week. Think they’ve finally caught back up to me at once.” She’s not lying, she's had a lot of emotions to work through this week, but she doesn’t want to mention arguing with Stan. It would just make everything worse.
“Why don’t we get you to bed.” Ford suggests and she nods silently.
She tries to stand, but before she can Ford picks her up bridal style bringing a smile to her face. “Ford, I can walk.”
He kisses her forehead. “I know. But you’ve done so much for me, let me?” He wants to be sure it’s okay. She nods and falls asleep in his arms before they reach their room.
----------
Ford sits up from a nightmare which draws her from her sleep as well. Before she can even ask what’s wrong he tells her.
“We have to warn them. He’s coming.”
----------
“You gave her what?” She shouts at Ford once he tells her about his meeting with Dipper and Mable.
“Was that… was that bad?” Ford’s face flushes red.
“Stanford you gave a twelve year old a crossbow!” She stares at him in disbelief. “Would you or Stanley have been able to use one at twelve?”
Ford thinks for a second and opens his mouth and thinks better of it.
She sighs. “I’ll just go with them to make sure they’re safe.” She srumbles together her things and tosses on a bag. She's about to walk out the door without saying anything when Ford grabs her arm.
“Let’s not part ways angry.” His eyes look over her face and he looks so unbelievably caring.
She sighs and pulls him into a kiss. “I’m not angry, I’m just worried about Mabel. She sometimes doesn't have the best judgment of character. Did I tell you she dated the gnomes at the beginning of summer?”
He laughs against her lips. “I understand you’re worried.” He pauses and thinks for a moment. “I’m worried too. Last time I encountered Bill he drove me away from you. I can’t let that happen again.”
She gives him another kiss. “I know you won’t.”
Later she returns with the girls to the shack, beaten and bruised.
Ford gives her a kiss and congratulates them on getting the unicorn hair. Dipper helps them glue the unicorn hair to the outside of the shack. Ford wraps his arm around her shoulder and she can’t but feel a little bit safer.
----------
She stares at the rift. “Ford it’s….”
He sighs and places his hand on her shoulder. “I’m aware.”
“You didn’t tell me?” She looks at him hurt.
“I didn’t keep it from you to keep it secret. I just didn’t want you to worry.” He sighs.
“But I could help. Ford I just got you back and now it feels like the world is about to end. I can’t lose you again.” He places her hand on top of his.
“Nor I you.” He looks in her eyes then looks away and clears his throat. “I was hoping that, um…” Ford searches his brain for the right words.
“Ford you know I’ll do anything for you, just ask.” She smiles sweetly at him.
“Well, I don’t need you to do anything for me. I was just hoping you’d do something with me.” He wraps his arms around her and rests his forehead on her. “When all this nonsense with Bill is done, I’d really like to finally marry you.”
She laughs. She cannot help it, but she laughs. Ford looks almost hurt. Her hands come up to cup her face and bring him in for a kiss. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t laugh. I just can't believe you were worried about asking me that. I’ve waited thirty year for you, of course I’m going to marry you.”
He smiles against her lips before bringing her back in for another kiss. “I’m the luckiest man alive to have you for a wife.”
“I’m the luckiest woman alive.”
----------
She runs after Mabel as soon as she runs from the shack, but by the time she reaches her, Bill has already been released into reality.
“Mabel no!” She screams as she watches the small girl suspended in the air as she gets wrapped in a bubble and chains and flown away.
“Well, well, well, well, well, well, well. Look what we have here! If it isn’t peace sign herself!” A voice behind her booms.
She turns around, already sure of who the voice belongs to. “Bill.”
“In the flesh!” He confirms as the yellow on his triangle opens and closes, revealing flesh and bones.
She turns and tries to run back to the shack, but is stopped as she is suspended in the air.
“Not so fast peace sign! I think you’d be a useful pawn against my dear friend six fingers!” Bill snaps his fingers and she is encased in a bubble similar to the one that carried Mabel away. “Can't have anything happening to you!” The bubble begins to move and flies to Bill’s Fearamid.
Bill keeps her behind bars. She sits and watches helplessly as people she knows from town are brought in one by one, turned to stone, and placed on Bill’s throne. She silently wishes Bill would have done the same to her, to spare her the awful reality in which she has to witness all this awful weirdness. But she knows that’s probably exactly why Bill didn’t turn her to stone, to make her suffer.
She won’t give up hope yet. She knows as long as Ford is out there fighting, there is still hope. That hope is quickly shattered as she watches Bill set Ford by his throne.
“Hey peace sign! Like my new back scratcher?!” He cackles at her anguished face. “The extra finger really adds to the scratch!”
She pulls her knees to her chest and quietly cries.
By the fourth day she can’t cry anymore, her head aches, her eyes are red and puffy, and she wishes she could sleep more than five minutes. The blaring music she had gotten used to, but the second one of Bill’s minions noticed she was asleep, they'd come over and smack the bars of her cage and wake her up.
---------
Stan is extremely relieved when the kids barge back into the shack. After he greets everyone he looks at the door expectantly.
“Are Fords and-” He tries to say but Dipper knows what he's going to ask.
“I know for a fact Bill has Grunkle Ford, but as for…” Dipper trails off.
They begin to argue a course of action and the other townspeople when Stan accidentally turns on the television. Every person and creature in the shack is brought to the reality that the people of Gravity Falls are being turned into stone, then the camera pans over to show their friend and Graunt.
She is behind bars and looks absolutely worn down.
Mabel and Dipper begin to hype everyone up to band together, but Stan is fast to voice his opinion against it.
“Grunkle Stan how can you say that?” Mabel pouts. “Bill has your best friend and brother. Are you just going to sit her while she suffers?”
Stan watches as everyone begins to form a plan.
----------
“Everyone has a weakness though guy, I’ll make you talk.” Bill threatens Ford at the top of the Fearamid. Ford is placed in chains.
Bill snaps and Ford watches in horror as his fiance appears next to the triangular menace.
“Don’t listen to him, Ford. I’m fine, don’t-” a rope comes up and wraps around her body and mouth.
“No!” Ford lets out an anguished scream. “Let her go, she has nothing to do with this.”
“Oh, Fordsie! Did you forget all the time we spent together? I’ve been in that silly little brain of yours, and I know how much she consumes your every thought! Did you forget who it was that showed you where the ufo was so you could propose to her there?! I know with her by my side I can get you to do what I want! Or maybe…”
Bill draws her close to his eye and looks closely at her. “If you know how to bring down the barrier she must know too! I’ll get one of you to talk for sure!”
----------
She watches in horror as Bill begins electrocuting Ford, knowing she would be next.
“If only one of you would talk, then you wouldn’t have to watch the love of your life torchered!” Bill cackles boisterously.
There’s a loud crash as the Mystery Shack crashes through one of the walls. She looks at Ford with hope on her face. Until Bill realizes maybe if he tortured the kids he could get Ford or her to talk, they both begin to yell before being turned to stone.
Her vision returns to her and she looks around to see everyone back to their normal selves. Ford takes her hand and pulls her to the kids where they share in a group hug.
Ford’s taken aback when he sees his old friend Fiddleford. She feels bad never having gotten around to telling Ford what happened to him. They share in a few heartfelt words and a hug before Dipper brings everyone's attention back to the fact that Bill is outside.
“Drawing a circle on the floor. Well. he’s lost his mind.” Stan shouts.
She lays a hand on Stan’s arm. “Trust him. Please.” Her smile is tired, and she looks so weak compared to the normal strong woman Stan was sued to seeing.
Ford explains the meaning of the symbol on the floor, and everyone begins taking their places.
“The peace sign.” Ford smiles fondly as she takes your place between him and Stan’s symbol.
Everyone takes hands and the ground begins to shake. She reaches her hand out towards Stan.
Stan begins to argue and everyone pleads him to join the circle.
“Stan, please.” She begs her friend.
“Fine, just do one thing, say thank you.” Stan says.
Her heart drops to her stomach. She knew both brothers were too proud and now wasn’t the time for this.
“What?” Ford gawks.
“We spent thirty years trying to bring you back and you couldn’t even tell me or your girlfriend, not wife, thank you!?” Stan barks.
She felt tears begin to prick her eyes. There was no need for Stan to add that she wasn’t his wife yet. She knew he was angry and being petty but it hurt.
“Now’s not the time, Stan.” She scowled, blinking back tears.
“Fine. Thank you.” Ford begrudgingly says and Stan takes his hand. It looks like for a second it might be working, until Stan begins to fight with his brother and breaks the circle.
“You two stop!” She shouts.
But it’s too late. Bill has arrived. He takes Stan, Ford, and her into his grasp and everyone gets ready to fight. Bill snaps his fingers but everyone but the twins levitates and disappears. The young twins are entrapped in a cage.
“Last chance: Tell me how to take Weirdmageddon global and I’ll spare the kids!” Bill threatens.
Mabel yells at him and gets his attention before spraying him in his eye with spray paint, causing his grip on the three to disappear. The kids free themselves and order them to run. The kids run off and they try to follow but Bill traps the three of them in another cage.
All she can do is sit beside Ford as he and his brother share a moment. Ford finally stands and states his idea of letting Bill inside his head.
“You can’t do that to Ford.” She grabs his hand.
“I’ll,” She chokes on her words. “I’ll let him inside my mind and you can erase him.” She's scared. She's so extremely scared to lose everything important to her, but she’s more afraid of losing Dipper and Mabel.
The brothers share a look. “Absolutely not.” They say at the same time.
“But, but,” She whimpers.
“What if…” Stan states his plan, and she's against it. She’d rather take the sacrifice but she knows neither of them would let her. So she watches helplessly as the two exchange clothes.
Stan brings her into a hug. “You’ve really made my life worth living, kid.”
She hugs him as tight as she can. “Don’t talk like this is goodbye, because it’s not.” She kisses his cheek. “I love you.”
“I love you too.” Stan reminds her, he shares a quick glance and hug from his brother, then they wait.
Everything that happens next happens in a blur. Stan, dressed as Ford, agrees to help Bill and steps towards him and Ford and her and are held in bonds again. Dipper screams for Ford to stop. Her vision blurs with tears.
As soon as Bill enters Stan’s mind she kneels down and draws both of the twins close to her and watches helplessly as Ford erases Stanley’s mind.
Everything returns to the normal state it should be. Mabel rushes to Stan's side and begins to praise him, but quickly she has to be pulled back.
She pulls Mabel into a tight hug as Ford explains what happened. They all cry, then they head back to the remains of the shack. The twins hold Stan’s hands.
Her hand is held tight in Ford’s, he holds her hand back equally as tight.
They stand awkwardly in front of Stan as he sits in his chair. Mabel refuses to accept Stan is gone and begins showing him her scrapbook from the summer. To everyone's surprise, it actually starts to work. They all gather around his chair while she reads.
-----------
It’s a few days later and Stan has recovered a lot of his memory. He’s not exactly himself yet but he is on the road to recovery.
It’s late in the afternoon and she’s outside repairing the steps up to the shack when Stan finds her. She greets him with a bright smile.
“Stanley!” She beams. “How are you feeling?” She takes a break from her work and sits down.
“Hey, kid. I’m feeling pretty good.” He smiles back and sits beside her. Then he begins to rub the back of his neck.
“What’s on your mind?” She places a hand on his shoulder.
“How’d ya know?”
“You always rub your neck like that when somethings on your mind.” She reminds him.
He pulls him hand down into his lap and sighs. “Listen, I feel like before I wasn’t the best at expressing my emotions, and when I fully recover I’m probably going to be the same again.” He thinks for a second. “I wanted to let you know that besides Ford, you’re the most important person in my life. You’re my best friend and you’ve been with me through everything, despite what an ass I can be a lot of the time. I wanted to say, ya know, thanks, and I love you.”
Stan can’t look at her face to see her reaction because she pulls him into the tightest bear hug. “I know, but it feels good to hear you say it. You’re my best friend too. If it weren’t for you I wouldn’t have Ford back.” She pulls back from the hug and sits.
“And another thing… I remember when we were all taking hands back during,” he waves his hand, “Ya know… I pointed out you weren’t married to Ford yet. I did it just to hurt your feelings. I was mad that you were okay he hadn’t said thank you to us yet. You’ve always been more level headed than me, more of a peacekeeper.”
She laughs. “I guess that’s why I was the peace sign.” She jokingly throws up a peace sign with her hands. “Joking aside though, all is forgiven Stanley. I could never stay mad at you. It means a lot to hear you talk like this. I know in a few days you won’t want to have conversations like this, so it’s nice, ya know?” The two of them sit in silence as the clouds pass overhead.
----------
Miraculously the Mystery Shack is back in one piece in just a week. Just in time for Dipper and Mabel’s birthday. Ford pulls Stan aside to tell him his plan to sail around the world.
She and Ford had discussed it beforehand, and she understood the boys needed some time alone to bond. She’d be happy waiting for them both to return back home.
“What are you crazy?” Stan playfully shoved his brother. “She’s not invited?”
“Well, no, we had discussed it beforehand and she thought it would be a good idea for us to have some time to bond. As brothers. I’ll miss her of course, but-”
Stan cut his twin off. “No buts! She waited thirty year for you. I say we bring her.”
Ford laughs. “I’m happy to hear you say that. As long as she wants to be stuck in a small boat with two old men I’d be happy to bring her.”
“You do realise she is as old as us right?” Stan calls her over to where the two are talking.
Ford wraps his arm around her waist and she smiles. “Did you tell him your plan?” She beams up at him.
“I did, however,” Ford frowns, and she frowns too. She looks to Stanley for explanation.
“You must be out of your mind if you think you’re not coming with us.” Stan smirks.
“But I thought…” She looks up at Ford.
“It was Stanley’s idea, and it’s fine by me. Actually more than fine by me, lovely even.” Ford leans down to give her a kiss.
“We’re family, so I think it’d be stupid to make you wait here alone for the both of us. So you coming or what?” Stan’s smile is wide and genuine.
She lets go of Ford to pull Stan into a crushing hug. “Thank you, Stan.”
“Yeah, yeah.” Stan rolls his eyes.
Her hand reaches back towards Ford. “Get over here, I need to hug you both.” Ford chuckles but compiles.
Stan surprises everyone by announcing the closure of the Mystery Shack before giving Soos permission to run it.
She keeps close to Ford’s side as they wait for the bus to take the kids back home. Mabel grabs her hand and pulls her down to her level. “You’re the best Graunt in the whole world.”
She hugs Mabel tight and closes her eyes to stop the tears from spilling from her eyes. “You’re the best great niece and match maker in the world. Thank you for getting Ford back for me.”
Stan and Ford threaten the bus driver to let Waddles on. They all wave goodbye and run after the bus, cheering farewells.
Ford holds her close with one arm while the other wraps reassuringly around his brother. “They’ll be back next summer. Until then, let’s have an adventure.”

GF - Timestuck AU: The Power of Mabel ch.6
While fighting over a time machine so one twin can win a pig or the other can win the heart of a girl, Mabel is left stranded in a snowy forest with no time machine and no brother. Oops.
ch.5 - ch.7 (finale)
~~~~~~~~~~
The air was still quite nippy and crisp, but the afternoon sun sparkled on the white snow and made the atmosphere pleasant to stand in if the Main Sequence Star was shining directly on a living organism, like it was on Stan from where he stood on the porch. He sighed tiredly as he dug into his hoodie’s pocket for a fresh cigar and lit it with his Zippo-style lighter. He knew he probably shouldn’t smoke with a kid in the house, but after the few days he’s had, he needed and had well earned a smoke-break.
The door opened and Stan hid his cigar by his side, his right arm glued to his hip to hide the newcomer on his left, but when he saw it was an adult, he relaxed and took another puff. “M’trying to quit.” He mumbled.
Ford snickered. “Yeah, it looks like you’re trying really hard.”
“Don’t be shitty.” Stan said casually.
“Mind if I lend one? I can replenish you in a few minutes.”
Stan stared at his goody two-shoes of a twin and handed him a cigar and the lighter. “You smoke?”
“Not often. For a celebration or after a long day.” Ford answered as he lit his borrowed cigar. “Maybe twice a month. Thrice?”
“Huh.”
Ford looked down at the lighter in his hand, and he was surprised when he recognized it. He can clearly remember seeing the tiny silver box in a store and thinking Stanley would like it as a Only One More Year of High-School present. “I gave this to you.”
Stan smiled as he took it back and pocketed it. “Yeah, it’s a good lighter. Only needed to change the flint a few times.”
“Hey guys!” A small voice called from inside the house. “Do you like vanilla or chocolate?”
The twins looked at each other, smiled, and called back. “Both. Both is good!”
“Both it is!”
Stan chuckled and shook his head. “Knucklehead… I knew she had to be family just by looking at her!” He bragged proudly.
“I suppose I was too distracted by the fact that a cold girl was at my doorstep to recognize the family resemblance.” Ford reasoned, shrugging. “I wanted to make sure I did the right thing. I didn’t exactly feel like getting arrested for kidnapping.”
Stan barked a laugh. “Yeah, you got a good point.” The conman yawned and stretched his arms over his head. “Guess I’ll head out tomorrow.” He mentioned offhandedly.
Ford stared at him, a little saddened and disheartened by this fact that was news to him. “You’re leaving?”
“I mean, yeah?” Stan equally stared at his brother, confused and not daring to be hopeful, but still. “What?”
“I just…” Ford hesitated and busied his mouth by taking a hit of his cigar. With everything that has been said and how well he and Stan have been communicating, he really didn’t feel like ruining it now. He relaxed his shoulders and said with his eyes on the snowy woods. “I was really hoping you would stay.”
Stan looked dumbfounded, like a child discovering candy for the first time, but he looked away and down at the porch floor. “Oh.”
“I’ll of course be taking care of Mabel until Dipper comes back in time for her…”
“He might not.”
“We got over our grudges. They can do the same.” Ford said firmly. “Still, you have a point. Dipper might not be able to come back. Regardless, whether it’s for a short time, a long time, or for the rest of my life, I will take care of her. I might not be the best for her, I can acknowledge that…”
“C’mon, Sixer, don’t be like that.” Stan scolded lightly, giving a sympathetic look to the nerd. “What else can you do, y’know? There’s no way in hell you’re gonna give her up, I’ll kidnap her and run away to Canada before I let you…”
Ford laughed and waved a hand as he smiled. “No no, I promise I won’t.”
“Good.”
“The point is, she loves you. Clearly. And it takes two, and I’ll be busy with my research, especially once the snow melts and the anomalies become more active in the spring and summer, but…” Ford bit his lip. This was a bad idea. If he makes it seem that the only reason why Stan needs to be here is because of Mabel, if or when she’s gone, then Stan will have no reason to stay. And there were many reasons why Ford wanted Stan to stay.
Despite how much of a social-cripple Ford was, he knew that Stan was homeless. His frequent traveling and how full his car was right now was enough proof of that. And Ford hated that for his brother.
But there was another, bigger reason why Ford wanted Stan to stay. So he better just say it.
“Do you know why I went to Backupsmore?” Ford asked.
Stan’s facial expression darkened as he looked away and he shrugged. “Cuz I fucked up your project?”
“No,” Ford answered plainly. “I may not have been accepted into West Coast Tech, but there were so many other colleges that wanted me. I could apply to Yale or Harvard or any college from New York to California and instantly be accepted.
“But I didn’t.” The author added grimly. “Stanley, when you left… When you were gone, I was a mess. So many days I just lied in bed without meals or sleep. Ma was hysterical. I failed most of my exams and only barely scraped a C in the ones I didn’t fail. My GPA dropped significantly and I even lost my Honor Roll. Thankfully my past grades were enough to let me graduate with a 3.2, but my clean record was stained and a lot of prestigious colleges didn’t want me.
“All I wanted at that point was to get as far away from Glass Shard as possible. Luckily there was a small college outside of San Francisco that practically accepted everyone and had a wide range of studies to offer, so I applied and was accepted by graduation day.”
“Good for you.” Stan grunted.
“No! The point is, I…” Ford groaned, feeling like he was failing, but he had to try. “I understand if you don’t want to stay. I understand you have your own life and things you want to do, and I can live without you again if I have to, but… I really, really don’t want to. Yes, I know that part of growing up is going in different directions and being independent and all the other bells and whistles, but it doesn’t have to be. So, if you can tolerate living under the same roof as me again, and if you’re okay with it, I want to offer you a job.”
Stan raised an eyebrow at the six-fingered man. “What kinda job?”
“The committee gives me monthly boosts so I can continue my research. As long as I prove to them once a year that progress is being made, I have a good income coming in. It is a big job, exploring the large woods, climbing mountains and waterfalls, combing the lake, mapping the Enchanted Forest, and hunting down monsters and anomalies to learn more about them. I’ve always managed to make it out of trouble alright, but… I need a partner, and I want to keep it in the family.” Ford smiled at the last sentence.
“What are you saying?” Stan sneered, not daring to believe, not daring to hope, but that stupid smile Ford had…
“I’m saying I want you to do this with me, Stanley.” Ford said matter-of-factly. “I can share the grant with you after bills are paid and groceries are purchased. We can renovate the small room on the ground floor to be Mabel’s bedroom and you can have the entire attic as your own space.
“I know it’s not sailing around the world, but… Please. Will you give me another chance?” Ford pleaded with a soft smile.
Stan grinned and shook his head. “Shit, Sixer, you’re a better salesman than me.” He looked him in the eyes. “Okay. Yes. I’ll stay.”
Ford’s cheeks puffed with happiness as he smiled, his lips pressed together, and he looked ahead, happily daydreaming his future. Being surrounded by weirdness for a living was amazing by itself; doing it with his twin and raising their niece together on top of it was better than anything he could have imagined.
Stan was watching him and laughed good-naturedly, then held out a hand to him. Ford blinked at it like a startled owl, but then returned the smile and sealed the deal with a high-six.
Both brothers stood contently outside with their cigars for a minute, but then heard a bowl clatter on the floor. Mabel must be making a mess in the kitchen, which was fine.
What wasn’t fine was the sound that followed of a body falling on the floor.
Ford raised an eyebrow and called calmly, “Mabel, are you alright?”
They both expected a quick “yeah, sorry, I’m okay,” and maybe an explanation to follow, like she tripped getting down from a chair or something. But there was no reply.
“Mabel, sweetie?” Stan hollered, trying not to sound mad or scared or anything but cool-under-pressure, but this voice trembled with fear.
Still no answer.
Ford and Stan quickly discarded their cigars and bolted inside. Racing like children for cookies, they soon stood at the doorway of the kitchen and were horrified to find Mabel sprawled on the floor on her front, her hair scattered over her face to hide her expression, and her legs and bottom-half of her body slowly fading.
Literally. Fading. Mabel was fading away. She was disappearing like a stain on cloth.
“MABEL!” The men screamed and were immediately on their knees beside her. Ford scooped her up into his arms and felt her pulse and looked over her.
“What happened to her?!” Stan cried out. “Pumpkin, what’s wrong?!”
Ford’s eyes widened in panic as a horrifying realization slapped him in the face. “Mabel… You changed history.”
The tired girl nodded with her eyes closed. “If… If you guys had a fight… and never made up… in my timeline, then I guess…” Mabel paused to yawn tiredly. It didn’t hurt, but she was really sleepy now.“I guess that timeline doesn’t exist anymore, huh? I guess I don’t exist anymore.”
“WHAT?!” Stan yelled and took Mabel’s hand and squeezed it. “We have to do something! You’re family! You’re… We can’t just let you d- not exist!”
Ford held Mabel tighter and closer to his warm chest, making her smile. She swore she could hear his heartbeat. It was too fast. She would have to fix that. Poor Ford was also shaking like a leaf. Mabel could fix that, too.
“I’ll exist.” She smiled up at her uncles. “In a few years.”
Ford bit his lip. He shouldn’t ask this, it was probably dangerous to learn about the future, but the worst was already happening. What else could possibly happen that was worse than losing his girl? Ford couldn’t help but ask, “When?”
“August 31st, 1999.” Mabel’s eyes dazzled. “You’ll meet Dipper, too.” She shifted her eyes to only Stan and whispered, “Did you know you were there? You came to see us when we were born?”
Stan’s eyes watered as he smiled at the new piece of information. “I did?”
“You did. I came out first. You were so proud when I kicked the doctor in the jaw.”
Stan made a watery chuckle and wiped at his eye. “That’s my girl.”
“Dipper came next. He was blue. Umbilical cord wrapped around his neck.”
“Was he okay?” Stan asked.
“He was fine. You knew he would be. You never doubted.”
“I never will, pumpkin. I swear.”
The fading is now much worse. It was spreading over Mabel like a virus. Her legs were hardly visible to the naked eye, and even her shoulders were losing color. This Mabel is almost completely gone.
Ford, pressed for time, bit his lip as tears flooded his eyes and he cupped Mabel’s cheek and cradled her. “I… I can’t let you go! We just started to become a real family! Wh-What am I going to do without you?!”
Mabel smiled and used the free hand not holding Stan’s trembling hand to caress Ford’s jaw and lower cheek, then cupping his face so her fingertips grazed his sideburn. “It’s okay, really. I’ll see you again, and next time it’ll be when both of you come to see us. Totally worth it.”
Ford held his breath, and shut his eyes, a tear escaping from each eye and sitting comfortably in the corners of his windows to his soul. Stan hiccuped a laugh and rubbed her hand between both of his. Both of them were doing everything in their power not to cry.
To that, Mabel laughed and said, “Boys are stupid. It’s okay to cry.”
The cursed power of Mabel. Making people be honest and breaking dams.
Ford curled into his niece, his face sloe to her heart, and cried gently. He wasn’t ready, but he didn’t think he could ever be ready for this.
Stan laughed with tears streaming down his face and he kissed Mabel’s tiny fingers trapped in his hold, then held their hands close to his bowed forehead and just focused on feeling her pulse between his palms.
It only lasted another minute.
Ford was mortified when his chest sank and his arms were empty. He threw himself back and stared at his lap and felt sick to his stomach to find his little girl missing.
Stan’s hands also clasped together and he squeezed tightly, his fists against his trembling lips as he cried.
The genius who always seemed to know what to do didn’t have a damn clue what to do with himself. He growled in his throat, squeezing his eyes shut and gritting his teeth, then let out a painful howl and moan that most definitely disturbed birds and made a deer or two gallop farther away.
Ford removed his glasses and held his knees, sobbing his heart out. Stan blinked his tears off his eyes, resulting in them rolling down his face, as he watched his brother completely shatter to pieces. He had seen him upset before, sure; all those years of bullying, of Pa’s outbursts and sometimes physical punishments, hopelessness that he was actually worth something. You don’t spend seventeen years with a person and not see them break every so often, granted the blessing to help them put themselves back together again.
But Ford didn’t need Stan to swoop in and fix it. There were no bullies to punch or parents to stand against or jokes to crack that would make this okay. All Stan could do was throw his arms around him and bury his face into Ford’s shoulder and cry, too.
So that’s what they did on the kitchen floor for over an hour.
~~~~~~~~~~
Dipper blinked to try to see, but all he saw around him was inky blackness for miles. His heart raced as he looked around for his sister. “Mabel? Mabel! Mabel, answer me!”
The boy scrambled and collapsed out of a portable potty at the fair. He blinked his eyes rapidly to adjust to the sunlight, scurrying off his hands and knees, clutching the warm time-machine in his hands. Wendy was still admiring her price and Robbie was still sulking, and Waddles was still trying to get away from Pacifica.
That didn’t matter! Mabel was stranded back in time! But how far back?! When was Mabel?! Dipper started jamming the button, but the machine wasn’t working, and it was soon swiped from him by a black-gloved hand.
“Mason Pines,” A gruff voice commanded above him and Dipper looked up to find two new guys with that Blendin guy. The two other guys were muscular and guarded with high-tech armor.
“You are under arrest for violating the Time-Traveler's Code of Conduct and for jeopardizing the timestream.” The man labeled as Dundgren stated as serious as death.
“Do you have any idea how many rules you just broke?!” Blendin squawked. “I’m asking. I wasn’t there with you. It was probably a lot, right?”
“Wait, wait please!” Dipper begged as the two members of the Time Paradox Avoidance Enforcement Squadrent each grabbed the boy by an arm. “My sister! She’s still back there! We have to get her!”
“You have the right to remain silent.” The man labeled as Lolph informed robotically. “Anything you say can and already has been used in the Court of Time-Law.”
“Let me go, Mabel needs-...” And Dipper and the three time-travelers were blasted forward in time.
~~~~~~~~~~
In the endless space of time, Dipper was levitated off the ground by a giant baby using the power of his forehead-hourglass to trap him in a baby-blue field. Members of the the Time Paradox Avoidance Enforcement Squadrent circled the two, and Blendin stood with his arms crossed over his chest and smiling smugly as the kid who caused so much trouble was getting what he deserved.
“You and your sister have broken the eternal laws of space-time.”
“I’m sorry!” Dipper cried out, trying to fight the energy circling him, but it was futile. “I’m sorry! Do what you want to me, just help my sister!”
“Your sister does not require help, nor do you require punishment.” Time Baby informed as he held his feet. “You are lucky the events that occurred do not change anything drastically. However, your timeline has shifted and therefore this reality’s version of you and your sister are no longer viable and will cease to exist.”
“What?!” Dipper squeaked and looked down at his body to find his legs disappearing. “No no NO! What’s happening to me?!”
“You and your twin sister will be born again on August 31st, 1999, but too many things are different in your timeline for this version of you to continue to exist.”
“W-W-What did I do wrong?! What did I change?!” Dipper cried out as his whole body was drained of color. “What changed in our timeline?!”
“Your uncles have amended their bond thirty-four years ahead of schedule. As unfortunate as this is, your sister miraculously delayed the plans of Bill Cipher by an entire millennia.”
“What uncles?!” Dipper asked, panicked as the fading reached his neck. “Who’s Bill Cipher?!”
“If you wanted the answers you sought out, you should have been patient.” Time Baby scolded. “We all get the answers we seek… in time.”
“P-P-Please!” Dipper begged as he appeared as a ghost. “Please! What did Mabel do?!”
Time Baby cruelly stayed silent, testing Dipper’s strengths, but he was dying, anyways. Might as well.
“She met the Author of the Journals. Your missing uncle.”
Dipper’s eyes widened. “Mabel…” He rasped, and then he ceased to exist.
(Mostly replying to the tags on OP)
The letter Wendy gives Dipper does strongly imply they plan to be in town again by summer 2013, so there is some canonicity to the notion that boatventures aren't meant to be a full-time, rest-of-their-lives, never-going-back enterprise. Plus, all the reasons you mention - I particularly imagine Stan might miss the town itself more than he expects to, because really, GF was the first real home he ever had after his parents kicked him out. For the previous ten years, he'd never been able to stay in one place besides a prison for very long, and we know that Stan is a) a man very attached to his comforts and b) very, very sentimental. He even sounds more fond when reminiscing about his childhood than not, even though it's hinted everything was always a lot less happy than he likes to pretend it was forty years later.
I think he also bases his self-esteem (such as it is) on the combination of defining an in-group that matters to him, then trying to get said in-group to approve of him....and while Ford was apparently basically enough of an in-group to work for him when he was a kid, it's been forty years since those days. In the meantime, his circle has expanded - man's had a borderline worshiper (in the form of Soos) for the last ten years before he got Ford back, for goodness' sake - and he was downright elated about how "the whole town loves us now!" after the events of "Gideon Rises." The Shack itself was also an accomplishment that was entirely his own, something he could only be said to have ridden Ford's coattails on in the very loosest sense of the term, and I suspect that makes a difference; he sounded so proud of himself when he mentioned that "finally, I'd found something I was good at" when talking about the early days of the Mystery Shack, and it seems he collected newspaper articles pertaining to it for years, too (based on the changing displays around his mirror in the aging-up montage in "A Tale of Two Stans"). The town will never be the central group, that's the group he defines as "family," but the public of GF, and the stability of having a place in society, where he knows and is known, that goes with said public... I seriously doubt he's genuinely indifferent to them, either. Add in how he's now being proclaimed the town hero on the news broadcasts in the finale (and proclaimed as such under his own name, even), and he might end up essentially only wanting to leave periodically because of the odds there will be a parade when he comes back.
Plus, as the tags mention, Soos. We very rarely get to see it on screen, but there is evidence that Stan is fond of him, in his own way. In his memories, we see him confide in Soos, including unbending enough to talk a little about his childhood and even his father; we also learn from Dipper in the Journal that Stan has memories of teaching Soos to box as a kid, which (since Stan still keeps his gloves around his room as an old man, even, and seems proud of having learned the skill when he was a child) it seems safe to assume was a bonding exercise of sorts. In the episodes of the show, Stan occasionally takes the time to explain business concepts to Soos, and will even (albeit more rarely) listen to Soos' business ideas from time to time. Bill, while inside Stan's mind, also refers to "Stan's family - Question Mark, Shooting Star, Pine Tree!" It must be acknowledged that Bill is a lying liar who lies, of course, and that he was clearly planning to manipulate the Mystery Crew and its emotional issues surrounding, among other things, Stan into inadvertently helping him from the first second, so it's possible he was just saying what he knew would hit an emotional button in Soos (either because pushing Soos' buttons had the potential to be useful later, or because Bill just enjoys pushing buttons), but if he isn't lying, then this nevertheless does lump Soos firmly in with Dipper and Mabel in the "family" category. Support for the idea that Stan might genuinely feel that way could, one could argue, be found in Soos' behavior: he behaves, for all intents and purposes, as a member of the Pines family. Soos is seen attending Pines family movie nights, and accompanies the family through the entirety of "The Golf War;" in that episode, Pacifica even refers to him as a member of the Pines family (though she does also later refer to him as a servant...must not headcanon Pacifica having some degree of genuine bond with her servants, a real attachment to the butler and her nanny and such others as might have taken, even to a limited and inadequate degree, up some of the emotional support roles her parents clearly aren't that interested in filling....). So yeah. Stan might well miss Soos.
Finally, well...Stan refers to himself constantly as an "old man," and while Ford only calls himself old when he's trying to make an excuse to awkwardly ask someone to stay with him without coming out and admitting that he actually just craves human contact, fact remains that the man is over sixty and hasn't had the easiest life. Realistically, there's only so many years that the sea life is going to be remotely plausible for them (even if the extra exercise is really good for Stan in the short term).
**Confession time - I have headcanons around some of the issues I discuss here.
I have the idea that as a young adult, Dipper might accompany the Stans on some of their later adventures. It's a background detail in the one (1) future story I've written, though I keep having vague ideas about exploring it further. Apparently, in my world, Dipper doesn't settle down until at least thirty-five, if he ever does at all (never decided on that issue).
Pacifica might end up working in the stables at the Building Formerly Known As Northwest Manor, at least as a teenager - she's visibly disturbed by the idea of being separated from her horses in the finale, and her comment on her wrecked appearance before she appears on a magazine cover in total disarray during Lost Legends ("I look like...me") indicates that she has a more rough-and-tumble side than her generally immaculate appearance might otherwise suggest; we also know she's apparently a pretty dedicated athlete (practicing mini-golf for hours with a specialized trainer) and her profile in the online pages of LL indicates she likes what sounds like fairly violent video games. When her idea of the Northwest legacy is well and truly shattered, she yanks off her diamond earrings and throws them away, as if rejecting the appearance her parents have pushed onto her now that she's become disgusted with the whole concept behind it. While she probably does have some genuine interest in fashion (she attempts, however briefly, to stand up to her mother to defend her own taste in shades of green in "Northwest Mansion Mystery," and when denied the right to wear what she wants, she comes in purple instead of in any shade of green) she also has an inner tomboy side I expect she'll explore more in the months and years after the show. Plus, getting a job would just be one more way to basically shoot her parents the passive-aggressive bird while simultaneously further integrating her into the social structure of the town proper, where she's now at least somewhat accepted.
Soft Hearts and After-Midnight Talks
Ford can’t let go of the past. Mabel can’t stop worrying about the future.
Put together, they’re a melting pot of insomnia and overwhelming emotions.
AO3 Link
Love had never come easy to Ford.
As a kid, his father always said it wasn’t manly to show affection. It made a man weak to wear his heart on his sleeve, and he was merely doing him a favor by showing him tough love, because out in the real world the men who put their emotions first would get torn to shreds.
His mother tried her hardest, but she too had times where she was too busy running her psychic hotline or helping Pa run the pawn shop to pay him much attention.
Ford supposes the closest he ever had to unconditional love as a kid came from Stan. Whenever Ma or Pa were too busy, or the kids at school were screaming and running from his deformity, he knew he could always rely on Stan to be there for him. He’d always been the one to throw a punch for him, to talk him through a panic attack, patch up the scrapes and black eyes he’d received from Crampelter, or even assure him that getting a B minus on an exam wasn’t the end of the world, even if his eyes were rolling into the back of his skull the entire time he said it.
 But even that sort of love felt fickle. The night of the science fair, it felt as though something inside of Ford shriveled up and died, and he knew that the rejection from West Coast Tech was only the half the cause of it.
When Stan drove off into the night, it’s as if he took that shriveled up little piece of Ford with him as his grand final fuck you.
After that, Ford tried everything he could. In college he buried himself into the research he was most passionate for, but that could only get him so far when Fiddleford would drag him to bed and force him to be alone with his thoughts. He’d tried going out drinking to forget said thoughts, but he learned the hard way that he was an emotional drunk and alcohol only made those thoughts worse.
If there’s anything he did know, it’s that this lack of love in his life could probably explain how he was able to fall for Bill’s cunning tricks so easy.
“Unlovable?” Bill’s words still rang in the back of his head. “By the time this portal’s finished, you’ll have the whole world at your feet! You’ll be a household name! There’ll be thousands cheering the name Stanford Pines, the man who changed the world!”
What a fool he’d been, blissfully ignoring all of the warning signs for even the slightest chance that a gateway between worlds could earn him love.
What an even bigger fool he’d been to turn away his brother’s love even after ten years of nothing but fear and resentment standing between them.
Ford sighs. He knows, logically, that dwelling on the past will only make things worse. He knows things are okay between him and Stan now. They’re setting off on their first journey on the Stan-O War II next week; things couldn’t get any better between them.
But he also knows that insomnia and intrusive thoughts are a package deal. He’d tried sitting out on the front porch to gaze at the stars and feel the late-summer air on his face to relax, but his inner demons always find their way.
There’s a tiny knock on the doorframe behind him. He jumps at the noise, and turns to see who else could possibly be awake at nearly three in the morning. He’s half expecting Stan, but to his surprise it’s Mabel, sleepily rubbing at her eyes with one hand and holding a half-empty cup of ice water in the other.
“Grunkle Ford?” her voice is groggy and strained. “Is that you?”
“Mabel?” is the only comprehensive response that comes out. “What are you doing up so late?”
“Dipper cursed me with his insomnia and now I can’t sleep” she pouts, and takes a sip from her cup like it’s a shot glass as he joins him on the couch. “Why are you still up, Grunkle Ford?” she squints. “I feel like I should ask you the same question”
He chuckles. “Nothing you need to worry about, dear. I’m just doing some thinking”
“Hmmm…” she squints long and hard at him, like she’s trying to read his mind. “Okay, but I’m watching you. I’m the expert at annoying people until they tell me what’s bothering them”
Ford can’t help but smile. Noted,” he replies, and shifts his position so he’s facing more towards her. “What about you? I’m the expert in insomnia, so I can’t imagine it’s the only thing keeping you awake"
For the briefest of moments, Mabel’s playful smile drops. She hides the sudden shift by taking another sip of water.
“What? Psshhh…” she dismisses the thought with a wave of her hand. “That’s silly! Everyone knows insomnia means you can’t sleep for no reason. Some expert you are, Grunkle Ford”
She smiles, but it’s strained, and fake, and nothing like the usual smile she flashes when she’s joking around.
“Mabel.” Ford says once, in a firm yet soft tone, and she winces.
“Okay, fine” she mumbles, and drinks the rest of the water from her cup before she continues. “I’ve been having some dumb thoughts too”.
Ford shakes his head. “There’s no such thing as a dumb thought, Mabel. Even if it’s bothering you, it’s indicative of how you’re really feeling” he pats gently at his lap, inviting her to scoot closer. “Maybe I can help” he smiles, ever so slightly, ever so softly. “Even us experts mess up in our own fields sometimes”
She moves too quickly into his arms for a hug for him to read her expression properly.
“Then I feel like a big dumb hypocrite” Mabel murmurs into Ford’s sweater, her voice on the edge of breaking.
Ford frowns, and places an arm around her to reciprocate the hug. “What for?”
Mabel scrunches up his sweater in her fists. “I...I made this whole big ordeal about Dipper wanting to stay here with you after the summer’s over for the apprenticeship, and I still don’t want us to be apart, but…”  she buries her face into his sweater, like she’s ashamed of herself for even daring to speak them. “...now that summer’s actually over, and Dipper and I are supposed to be leaving in the morning, I’m not sure I even want to leave”
Her voice finally breaks, and she sniffles into his sweater. “Everyone’s always saying that the real world is so scary, and high school is the worst, and all these things about not knowing what you had until it’s gone, and...I don’t want it to be gone, Grunkle Ford, I love Gravity Falls. But I can’t just tell Dipper that, because then he’ll get all worried, and think that he did something wrong, because he’s already apologized for what he said when we were fighting a thousand times, and-”
Ford gently grips Mabel’s shoulders to cut her off, and pulls her away to make her look him in the eyes. “Mabel, are you going through all of this trouble because you’re worried you’re going to...miss Gravity Falls when you get home?”
“Not just the town!” Mabel exclaims, and rubs at her eyes with her wrist. “I’m gonna miss everything! I’m gonna miss the Shack, I’m gonna miss my friends, I’m gonna miss you and Stan,” she counts off on her fingers and sighs. “I miss everyone at home. I do. But now that I have so many friends here, I don’t want to feel like I’m leaving them behind”
There’s a brief pause, but before Ford can open his mouth to respond, Mabel goes on, murmuring so quietly it’s as if she doesn’t mean to speak out loud at all.
“Or...I don’t want to feel like they’re leaving me behind.”
...Oh.
The fear of being left behind.
Forgotten.
The fear of becoming….unlovable.
That….Ford knows better than anybody.
“Mabel, listen to me,” Ford gently tugs on her chin to force her to make eye contact with him. “Nobody in this town is ever going to forget you. It doesn’t matter if you’re gone for a year, or three, or ten, I can guarantee that the next time you step foot in this town everyone’s going to remember the name Mabel Pines”
“You...really think so?” she blushes.
“I know so,” he nods. “And it’s got nothing to do with Weirdmageddon, or saving the world, or any of that. It’s because you’re magnetic, Mabel. You’ve got a personality that everyone loves. I bet that pizza delivery man you became pen pals with is just sitting at home eagerly awaiting his first letter from you”
She giggles. “I don’t know about that…”
“Still,” Ford continues, “You’ve shown kindness to everyone, Mabel. People don’t forget kindness easily.” he gestures out towards the forest. “Gravity Falls may not be your home, but the people who lived here sure don’t seem to see it that way. You’re not just a tourist, or just some kid visiting her great uncle, you’re one of them.” he beams. “They’re lucky to have had you, Mabel, even just for the one summer”
Her eyes have pools of tears in them, but the beaming smile on her face outshines them. She hurls herself at him in a tight hug, burying her face deep into his sweater.
“I’m lucky to have you too, Grunkle Ford” she murmurs. “I love you”
I love you.
Ford hasn’t had those words spoken to him since he was a kid.
I love you.
It feels like he’s floating on air, and the most grounded he’s felt in decades. It’s freeing, and exhilarating, yet it’s comfortable, and warm. It’s unfamiliar, yet everything he ever lost.
The words ring in his ears and bounce around in his chest before they settle comfortably into the piece of his heart that had been broken for decades.
I love you.
Mabel Pines, after everything he’s put her through, loves him.
A sound escapes him that’s halfway between choking and sobbing. He pulls her even closer into his arms, and silently vows to never let the cruel world dig its pessimistic claws into her for as long as she lives.
“I love you too,” he manages to whisper, and gives her a smooch on the top of her head.
Act 2
Chapter 24: The Right Tools
Thud!
“Oops.”
Tiny particles invade Wybie’s throat. He started coughing and found he couldn’t stop.
“I think you went overboard on the glitter…” Wybie managed to choke out.
“Nonsense! There’s no-” Mabel began to cough. “Such thing... as too much…” But she couldn’t finish her sentence, and instead, she doubled over with wheezing, hacking breaths.
“You were saying?” Wybie asked. It was becoming easier to breathe as the glitter began to settle on the floor of the attic bedroom around them. “Also… why did we need glitter again?”
“Neil, tell him,” Mabel said with a nod to the red-headed kid beside her.
"Glitter enhances everything," Neil informed him matter-of-factly. "It's called aesthetic."
"And more of a good thing is always a good thing!" Mabel added cheerily.
Wybie raised an eyebrow at her. "I'm not sure that's true." However, he didn't say anything more than that. Wybie had known the girl for only a few days, and he had already learned that arguing sense into her was pointless.
Wybie looked down at the square device on the ground which used to be black, but was now pink, had a collection of cupcake stickers, a cat made out of puff paint with big eyes, and rhinestones clustered in any additional left over space. With Mabel’s newest addition, the whole device was also now covered in glitter. As mismatched and horrible as the whole thing looked, he had to admit the cat was painted really well. After the mummy project, Wybie had no doubt that the girl was talented artistically, even if she did have… unusual tastes.
When Neil and Mabel said that they wanted to help Wybie fix the EMF meter, he expected that they would just help him find supplies. He didn’t expect… this kind of help.
“What’s wrong with how it looked before?” Wybie asked.
Mabel shook her head, as if he had just asked the silliest question she had ever heard. “If you were a ghost, what would you be drawn towards? A boring black square box? Or this work of art?”
“Definitely this,” Neil agreed. “It's a lot more fun and everyone likes cupcakes!”
“But the problem wasn’t about getting the ghost’s attention,” Wybie explained. “The problem was getting the device to work properly.”
After they got home from getting lost in the woods and finding the mysterious cabin, Wybie had started working on building the EMF meter while the rest of the kids finished the fake mummy for the shack. It wasn’t a very complicated device, and by the next day, Wybie had the device built. EMF readers detect electromagnetic fields that are given off by electronics, especially old electronics that don’t have their wires properly shielded. EMF fluctuations are also said to indicate ghostly activity. The idea was, even if they couldn’t see Luis themselves, the EMF meter should be able to pick up his ghostly energy… provided they were far enough away from any electronics that could set off the EMF meter. Wybye was still a little skeptical of the science, but he didn’t have a better idea.
Coraline and Norman had been eager to get back to the Cardinal’s old mansion to see if they could find Luis again as soon as possible. They wouldn’t be able to communicate with him if they couldn’t see or hear him, but at least the EMF reader would indicate if he was still around or not. Once they knew if Luis was still around, they could work on other ways of communicating with him.
When they arrived back at the old mansion, Wybie turned on the EMF meter and it immediately calibrated to the surrounding area. The device had an indicator needle that could swing between green, yellow and red; green indicating low electromagnetic energy, yellow indicating medium, and red indicating high levels.
At first, the device was reading green, but as they stepped further into the house, the needle swung to yellow, and the device started letting out a slow beeping noise. Excited, Wybie tried to find the source of the electromagnetic field disturbance by moving the EMF meter around. Coraline eagerly called Luis’s name, but she got no response.
As Wybie swung the device to his left, he noticed that the device started beeping louder as the needle detected more activity. He moved to the left and the beeping increased, the needle moving to red. Slowly, he seemed to be narrowing in on the location of the disturbance. He stopped in front of Norman, and Norman moved out of his way- only for the beeping to decrease again as the needle moved back down to yellow. Wybie adjusted his position, and he was able to pick up the trail again… only to find himself standing in front of Norman for a second time.
Norman’s eyes widened in surprise and the color seemed to drain from his already pale face.
“Wh-what does that mean?” Norman asked nervously as he eyed the EMF meter. “Why is it focusing on me?”
“I’m not sure,” Wybie said as he fiddled with some of the buttons on the meter. “Do you have your phone on you? You should give it to someone else. Maybe that’s what’s setting off the device.”
Norman did so, handing over his phone to Neil.
Norman stepped away from the EMF meter, but again, it focused in on Norman, beeping incessently.
Norman shifted uncomfortably as everyone stared in confusion at the device.
“Wait, I think I’ve seen this movie,” Raz exclaimed with a fake gasp. “Norman’s been dead the entire time!”.
A few lighthearted chuckles from the group eased the atmosphere, and Norman let out an awkward laugh himself.
“It’s probably because Norman was possessed by Luis,” Dipper suggested. Some of his ghostly energy must still be on him, which is messing with the EMF meter.
“Can you do something about that Wybie?” Coraline asked. “We aren’t going to be able to find Luis if the EMF reader keeps lighting up everytime Norman gets close, and I really don’t want to have to wait to find out how long ghost energy can last on a person.”
“I can probably make the device less sensitive,” Wybie said. “That should make it harder to detect Norman and more likely that it will detect a bigger electromagnetic disturbance, like a ghost… theoretically. That's assuming this is even a valid method of finding a ghost.”
“I can leave,” Norman suggested hesitantly. “Maybe that would make it easier for the EMF meter to work if I wasn’t here?”
Dipper shook his head. “No, you should stay. We want to make sure the instrument is actually reading a ghostly entity, not just left over energy. We can actually use you to make sure the calibration is correct.”
“The new calibration might take a while, but I think it will be ready by tomorrow,” Wybie said.
Coraline frowned impatiently, but nodded. “I guess we have no choice but to wait until then.”
“Oh! I can help you, Wybie!” Mabel said eagerly
“Me too!” Neil chimed in.
“Sure,” Wybie said with a shrug.
After all, how could more help be a bad thing?
Past Wybie had been so naive.
Well, Mabel and Neil hadn’t messed with the inside of the device, and as long as it was still functional, that was the most important part.
”You fixed the inside and we fixed the outside! We make a great team!” Mabel said, patting him on the back.
“The outside wasn’t broken-”
“Agree to disagree,” Mabel said flippantly.
“But I haven’t completely fixed it yet,” Wybie said. “I still need to screw this back panel on, but the screws I had to use for the back panel are a lot smaller.” It was a common occurrence when Wybie built things out of spare parts. No big deal. He just needed to use different tools. “I need to use something else. Neil, can you hand me that smaller screwdriver by your leg?”
“Sure!” Neil said and offered the screw driver to Wybie, who thanked him.
“I guess it’s time to find out if it works,” Wybie said as he finished tightening the last screw. “Coraline wanted to try the mansion again today as soon as this was done.”
“Didn’t Mr. Pines want us to work in the shack all day? Won’t he be mad if we all just left?” Neil asked.
“Raz and Lili left a few times yesterday and I think they were gone this morning and I don’t think Mr. Pines noticed. He was too busy with all the tourists,” Wybie said.
“Oh yeah… Why do you think Raz and Lili keep leaving without telling anyone?” Neil asked.
Mabel’s smile widened. "I bet Coraline’s right and they're sneaking away to make out!"
"But whenever they leave they are always really serious and determined. That’s not how people look on TV when they’re about to go kiss someone, or my brother with his boyfriend,” Neil said.
“Also if they are just sneaking off to kiss, why would they be gone for hours?” Wybie added.
“Because they are going on romantic dates, obviously!” Mabel insisted.
“Two to three times a day?” Wybie countered.
Mabel shrugged. “They’re in love!”
“Maybe.” Wybie said, but he suspected there was more to it. Perhaps they were trying to get out of doing work around the shack? Or maybe they had found something more interesting to do in Gravity Falls?
“Do you think your Grunkle would be okay if we left the shack early today to go to the mansion?” Neil asked.
“It depends,” Mabel said thoughtfully. “Grunkle Stan cares if it eats into the profits. With all the new customers we’ve been getting because of the mummy exhibit, he’s probably too happy to care. It’s also past the mid-day rush anyway. We probably won’t get another big batch of tourists until tomorrow.”
Wybie was glad he had been lucky enough to avoid the crowd of tourists that had come to the shop to see the grand reveal of the mummy. The reason Wybie had time to finish the EMF meter was because Coraline, Dipper and Norman were handling the gift shop so they weren’t needed downstairs.
Wybie looked over his EMF meter and turned it on. It hummed, but didn’t start beeping right away, which was a good sign unless the twins bedroom was hunted. In which case it should be beeping very incessantly…
Wybie sighed and turned off the device.
“What’s wrong?” Mabel asked.
“Machines I understand. I could tell you a hundred facts about the different spiders and slugs living in the Pacific Northwest. When I don’t know something, I can research it until I figure it out. But this… ghost stuff. I don’t understand it at all
Mabel cocked her head to the side. “And that’s… bad?”
“Yes!” Wybie said, throwing his hands into the air. “We spoke to a ghost, we found a cabin in the woods powered by magic! I’ve seen all this crazy stuff in the past two days and I don’t know how to make sense of it! How am I supposed to learn or study about something that just breaks the laws of physics? I know ghosts are real. I saw Louis with my own eyes and I’ve known monsters are real ever since… Well, that thing that Coraline doesn’t want to talk about. I can see it, and believe in it to a certain extent, but how am I supposed to understand it? What units of measurement do I even use for ectoplasmic energy or the amount of magic powering the cabin? How am I supposed to understand it, let alone build a device to detect it?” He held up the EMF reader in frustration.
To Wybie’s surprise, Mabel giggled. “You sound like my brother.”
“I do?”
“Dipper will go on and on and say that he loves mysteries, but that’s not true. It’s not the mystery he likes, it’s solving them. The truth is my brother hates mysteries. He can’t stand the uncertainty… he hates not knowing, it eats at him. What he really enjoys is putting the pieces together. You’re similar, you like taking things apart and then putting them back together, but better than before. But with this ghost and magic stuff you’re stuck.” She held up his discarded screwdriver. “Your usual tools aren’t going to help you understand.”
“So what I’m I supposed to do?”
Mabel shrugged. “I don’t know. I don’t know how that stuff works either. What do you usually do when you’re stuck and what you’re trying to do isn’t working?”
Wybie frowned. It wasn’t uncommon for him to get stuck with an engineering problem, but what did he do when he was completely out of his depth?
“You get better tools.” Neil said eagerly and Wybie looked up. “Just like you had me get a different screwdriver for the different sized screws.”
Wybie nodded slowly. “I improvise. But how am I supposed to get better tools to understand magic and ghost stuff?”
Mabel shrugged again. “I guess that’s just another mystery?”
Wybie groaned. “I hate when there are too many mysteries and not enough solutions.”
Mabel grinned. “Welcome to Gravity Falls.”
I'm finally back with the beginning of Act 2! I hope you liked it!
I've also been busy going back and editing this story. I haven't made any major changes so there is no need to reread the story since everything is mostly the same!
