For names of stuff in ffxiv if i think the EN name is close, i go with it, otherwise im going with the Japanese. Like “primal” for 蛮神 or “Maelstrom” for 黒渦団? Yeah I can see the reasoning and I think they’re good. But paragon for 天使い??? Nah, that does not convey the same thing as heavenly envoy so I’m not using it. Or I forget what the EN was for 暁の血盟 but it definitely wasn’t as cool as blood oath of dawn.
And also arbitrary name changes like why Dalamud instead of Dalagab? I’m just gonna go with the original especially cause I’m always seeing it… also I haven’t even met the guy yet but why would you ever translate the name ファダニエル as Fandaniel instead of Fadaniel, like it’s a one letter difference and it sounds way worse in EN, I legit thought he was a YouTuber that streamed the game or something instead of an actual character for the longest time because of it LMAO

#final fantasy xiv#ffxiv#ffxiv fandaniel#the cutscene where he's dancing and pacing in front of zenos in the armory while they talk genuinely startled me a little#with how accurately the editing and camerawork captured What That Stim Feels Like#i'm less inclined to do Large Amounts of Spinning and Bending; and the way i get my arms involved looks different#but something about the energy to it and the center of gravity and the way he Turns when he steps is just Oh Wow Yeah Same#on one hand; surface-level he's the type of Unhinged Manic Pixie Dream Boy that you'd think would be a bit on the nose for adhd headcanons#(which would be valid anyway to be clear but still)#but like. motherfucker has adhd just look at him#and honestly i like that a lot because 'surface level' is the keyword here. he Has Depth and is adhd about it#i need to find that post about how masking doesn't necessarily mean trying to pass for neurotypical#among other things; it can look like playing super hard into Look at How Megadifferent and Quirky and Weird I Am; and yeah that's him#and tbh he kind of vibes to me as having gotten into Being an Obnoxious Flamboyant Theater Kid#specifically because it's a useful cover for being his brand of ND#'those damn wacky rich gay nobles' as an explanation for your behavior is going to get you a very different niche in society#than 'that weird dude who talks strangely and can't sit still and whose social cues are A Little Off'#'and makes bizarre disruptive distracting movements with his body while he talks'#anyway diversity win etc etc i love him#ableism mention cw#ffxivtag#FF tag

In my professional opinion, they fucked up by creating Zenos and having him be a villain for three whole expansions, because now it appears on the surface that he's THE bad guy of the franchise.
You are not capturing that again in your storytelling devs. And you can't pull Emet-Selch off twice.
Good luck crafting another long-standing villain that's iconic enough to earn a spot in Dissidia games.
You are so correct YES - I told you this before but Zenos is one of the few characters I knew of before I even started playing ffxiv. And like, I used to be SUPER against picking up this game bc I was dead-set on being a wow-player only and I thought ffxiv looked stupid. ( Oh how wrong I was lol.) BUT!! Zenos!! I knew about him!! I had seen him! I was motivated to try the game because of him. (And to give him credit as well, Emet-Selch.) The villains of ffxiv is like the PULL of the game. So I uh....I ... trust the writers to know what they're doing. And I hope that they're aware of how iconic these characters are.

im fully ffxiv-pilled now but i do need to respect my roots as a WoW player. and i don't mean WoW player until like last year or anything, i mean my mum and dad taught me how to play WoW when i was like 10. i had a human warlock named heminie (this was meant to be hermione because it was the first witch female character i thought of but i couldn't spell). i could not tell you a single thing about the overarching plot but i used to collect pets so i spent most of my time farming random mobs so i could get tiny dragons and shit. i remember the day i got the emerald whelping i was soooooo chuffed. it looks like this btw

#ffxiv#the lighting in every one of these shots is SO gorgeous#i could make them prettier if i played around with photoshop but i don't feel like it rn#i am just Appreciating It#finished the first chunk of the heavensward patch quests. having a great time. wow#i'm also officially in love with aymeric that man is SO man of all time i can't believe this game has TWO of them#i've been figuring out lelesu's arc through her grief and i've been going insane about the like#parallels in that the quests are about ishgard's struggle to move forward from the past and look to the future#and lelesu is also in her personal life struggling to move forward from the past and look to the future wrt haurchefant#and in both cases ofc aymeric is the one to so steadily champion every step taken#i am feeling VERY normal. someone talk to me about her hough#oc: lelesu lesu

in ~5 days i have played 27 hours of da inquisition ... despite also having had to go outside the last 5 days for leisure or college/health related stuff. Goddamn.

#me.txt#i have never played and will never play world of warcraft. i played ffxiv which was better than wow in most ways and i still didn't like it#mmorpgs just aren't for me#but...#mmorpgs are fascinating. a little microcosm of our society#but more violent and lawless#humans allowed to be their best and worst with minimal consequences#individual economies sometimes. pandemic research. ffxiv has a housing crisis#and i wish i could keep acting like this is a purely academic interest but unfortunately i found a blorbo :/#in my defense anduin is ALSO very fascinating because he basically grew up with the player#i've seen people talk about how they grew up with them or talk about how it kinda felt like they helped raise him#i've actually done the math and he's (kinda) consistently a similar age to me throughout expansions#that's so cool!#it's definitely not something you see often. suddenly you have to wonder about a video game character growing old and dying? as you do?#but again it's not purely academic. i only like 1) good good sunshine boys 2) mean powerful women 3) villains#and an optional 4) traumatized pretty boys (this is optional because of the large venn diagram overlap with 1) and 3))#and. WELL.

Stalin watched and enjoyed John Wayne movies so I don't know why some communists are obsessed with not ever watching/reading/playing "problematic" media. It's about being able to take a critical eye to it, tear them apart and understand what makes a piece of media kinda/really shitty, but without killing your enjoyment of it or defending it
