i’m so sorry for the late reply. happy (very late) wip tuesday! thank you so much for this.

i’ve been working on three wips!

a bazaar for magic - a dark, steampunk, industrial-ish fantasy about a person who sells stolen magic and all the trouble that surrounds him. there’s inter-dimensional travel, disabled mcs, pocs, are-they-really-humans, femme fatales and grumpy emo captains. (young adult)

grave mercy - a dark horror fantasy about two very different vampires individuals in an alternate version of hell. they basically end up teaming up in spite of hating each other to unravel the mystery of their ‘savior’, a divinity called the Wanderer. there’s vampires, scary beasts, a wack version of vatican city, the hardest tragic bromance (romance?) of your life and in general a lot of dying and suffering. (adult)

a florist’s guide to twisting time - a japanese au fantasy + dark comedy loosely based on the showa period about the dark art of botanical alchemy… and its relation to time travelling! it’s a really crazy concept lmao but it works. also this is my secret exercise wip. all i can say is a lady necromancer is the mc, there’s found family, a flower shop named after foxfruit and a greenhouse with live hearts in plant pots. (young adult)

Hello, I don't know if you personally can help me with this, but I thought I would give it a go. I am trying to work on a few new books/ideas and I want more representation in my books. Race, Sexuality, Gender/lack off, etc and I was wondering if you would know of any way for me to do this correctly without offending anyone or making the characters represented, inherently stereotypical. I know that researching will help, but I was wondering if you had any ideas. I want to represent, and not lack

First of all, I want to really stress this:

Research is absolutely necessary.

Racism, sexism, heterosexism, ableism, and any other -ism out there is an extremely complicated, multi-faceted issue with a lot of intersectionality, interaction, history, and variability.

People have different experiences, various groups have their own obstacles that aren’t applicable to others, and it’s incredibly important to educate yourself on whatever group you’re writing.

Read up on issues they face, see if you can find articles or interviews about people talking about their experience, maybe you’ll be able to find someone who is willing to educate you and answer your questions. Look into the culture of the group, their customs, their beliefs, stereotypes and microaggressions that they go through.... There’s a lot to look into, and the resources are out there.

In order to avoid stereotyping and tokenizing your characters, you have to first understand what is offensive, and why it’s offensive.

Otherwise here are some very general tips.

Give your characters depth.

Seems obvious, but it’s important. Stereotypes are offensive because it is often the only thing a badly written character is allowed to do.

For example, the ‘quiet Asian girl’ is an offensive stereotype. Does that mean that you can never make an Asian character that’s on the quiet side? Not at all! You can make a quiet Asian girl as long as that’s not the only part of their character. 

A good way to think about this might be to develop a character who happens to be part of a certain group, if you’re worried that you might accidentally stereotype them.

As long as you’re giving them the same amount of depth as your white, cisgendered, able-bodied, privileged-in-other-ways character, chances are you’ll be doing okay.

Avoid tokenism

Tokenism is essentially the act of including minority characters to make it seem like there’s diversity, but there’s not enough of it.

You know the whole ‘token minority’ character thing that happens when there’s only one POC in a cast full of white people? This is it.

Tokenism is harmful because it sends the message that there is only one type of that minority group. There’s a really simple way to try to avoid tokenism in your story: Have more than one POC! Have more than one gay person! Have a variety of minority characters in your cast, and give them all depth. 

Include diversity, but don’t make your story about the minority experience

This is the difference between “My WIP has a Mexican-American character” and “My WIP is about what a Mexican-American goes through in their life”.

It’s generally a good idea to avoid writing about what you don’t experience. For example, I’m Japanese-American; I could write a story about being an Asian person in America and what that is like. However, I don’t know what it’s like to be a transgender person in America, so I can’t write a story about their experiences because it would be filtered through my privileged, cisgender perspective, no matter how careful I try to be.

Of course, I can still include trans characters in my writing! I just shouldn’t focus on their experience of being trans, and avoid tokenizing and stereotyping them by reducing their identity to nothing but them being trans.

Consult sensitivity readers

Sensitivity Reader — A person who reads through a draft to check for issues of representation, cultural inaccuracy, insensitive language, etc. For example, if you are a white author who has black characters in your story, you should have a sensitivity reader who is black, so they can let you know if you are accidentally being offensive, or misrepresenting them in any way. Many writers will have multiple sensitivity readers to give them feedback, so they can make the proper changes to be more inclusive and culturally sensitive. Can be paid or unpaid, depends on the author.

It is incredibly important to find someone of that culture/background/minority group to read through your drafts when you are ready, so they can let you know if there is anything that needs to be changed to be more appropriate and sensitive.

No matter how well you may have educated yourself on topics like this, no matter how much research you’ve done, the only people who can really tell you if you’re doing something right or if something is offensive or misrepresented is people from that group.

And I won’t lie to you, it can be rough. I can be really frustrating, or you may want to get defensive. 

But please listen to your sensitivity readers. Take them seriously when they point out something that needs to be changed.

It’s also best to have multiple sensitivity readers to get several perspectives from the group, because one individual is not responsible for speaking up for their entire group.

This is by no means a comprehensive, fail-proof guide on how to be sensitive in how you represent different groups of people outside of your own experiences. This is just meant as a very general set of advice to get you started. It’s important to do your own research, and be respectful in how you go about finding information.

Chances are, you’ll mess up at some point. You might accidentally be offensive without meaning to. You can fix this, just be willing to listen and be flexible to changing things so that you can better represent underrepresented characters.

Dear Fellow Writers: Favorite Tropes

 Okay, because I am sick and tired of the ‘tropes are bad’ and ‘you are a garbage writer if you ever used these tropes even once in your life’ mentality that seems to plague the writeblr community, I decided to do this. What is this, you may ask? Well, this is me asking writers about their favorite tropes and why they are their favorite tropes.

 One important note: Please do NOT bash or belittle other tropes in this discussion. We are here to talk about tropes we enjoy, not tropes we don’t.  Thank you. ^-^

 I shall start:

 I have always, even when I was a kid, been a sucker for the trope where the party of adventurers are faced with overwhelming odds and one character stops running. Looks the rest in the eyes and says something along the lines of ‘go, I will hold them off.’ And They do. They stay and face the enemy while the others are running off, tears in their eyes as they’re hearing their friend’s last stand.

 Bonus points if there’s one character they’re dragging off with them whose screaming the first character’s name, or if there’s that one friend who doesn’t run and stands beside the first character and they have that conversation along the lines of:

 ‘B, you need to leave.’

 ‘We started this fight together, A, and we’ll end it together.’ 

 And a smiles ‘Have it your way then.’

 I have never quite been able to pin down why this trope is my favorite of the many tropes I enjoy. Perhaps it’s just the wave of raw emotion that hits when the characters realize they aren’t coming back, maybe it’s the way that the character gave them an extra chance when there were none, or maybe it’s after effects. When characters are grieving, pushing forward in that one character’s name, trying to make something of themselves or complete their quest to make the sacrifice worth it.

 But what about you guys? What are your favorite tropes?

Reasons Why I Love You

Now, I know that I have already started showing appreciation to people through TPP and BotW, but you guys (well, most of you) know me... when I get to drinking, I get to loving.

Well, okay, I haven’t even opened my bottle yet, but this is some pre-drink love. :p

(btw, I recommend every blog on this list to you guys!)

Okay, so there’s a few people that have really stuck things out with me through an amount of time. And I know generally when I make these, I try to make them about new friends (and I will probably end up doing one of those today as well, but for now...), but right now I just want to make an appreciation post for people that have stuck it out with me through the highs and lows of this blog, because trust me... I am not ALWAYS so social and chipper.

So! Without further ado...

The first person I wish to recognize is @franky-ts. She is one of my first friends I made on tumblr, if not THE first (out of the people I still talk to). We call each other our twins/sisters because we’re so alike and are both Tauruses with water moons (mine’s Pisces; hers is Scorpio). She is so fun to talk to and she is always willing to lend a listening ear, no matter if it’s good bad or ugly. She’s been here for me for years! Since like 2014 or 2015! I’m so grateful to have a friend who’s always there for me and who lets me return the favor. We have picked each other up from so many lonely nights and so many tears and such... and I’m so grateful to know you. I hope to get to know you in person one day, that would be such a dream!

Next I wanna talk about @mvcreates. Mina, much like Franka, is a woman that has been here to talk me through a LOT. And she is incredibly patient and understanding. And intelligent! And wiiise. She always knows what to say and how to say it to make me feel better or to calm me down when I’m freaking out.

But it’s not just that. She’s so in love, and it’s so obvious and so inspiring. I love and look up to her relationship in ways that very few relationships have ACTUALLY inspired me. I love this girl and I’m so grateful to the interweb Lord for putting her in my path because I can’t imagine tumblr without having such amazing friends such as her.

@leave-her-a-tome is next. Our friendship started with a comment on an idea post of mine about Death Has a Face, when Ikuisuus was only a concept, a random idea that popped into my head. She said she loved the idea and that it’d inspired her to draw something, and the beautiful friendship blossomed from there. Now it’s been over a year (can you believe that!?) of friendship and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

Eris inspires me in many ways. Her kindness, her friendliness, her TALENT!!! I mean, have you seen the drawings she made for that WIP? Good god is she talented!!! Eris is amazing through-and-through and I’m so glad to have her in my life. We haven’t chatted as much as I’d like, but that’s probably a lot my fault. I focus so much on making new friends, sometimes I’m not the greatest at maintaining my current friendships. I hope to end that trend soon.

Then there’s @dawnoftheagez. Dawny-poo, as I call her. ;) Dawn is one of the first people to show my new writing on this new blog the enthusiasm and support and LOVE that she did. But it was more than that. She shows ME love and support every time we talk. She’s always checking up on me. She’s always making sure I’m okay. Yes, I have other friends that do it too, but she does it every time we talk. She genuinely cares about me, as I do her. And I hope she lives the happiest life she possibly can.

Next up is @jade-island-lives. Good god. Jade. My girl. My little mermaid-loving girl. One of the people I got closest to the fastest (along with Franka and Dawn). She is so friendly, so talented, and it breaks my heart when I see her suffering or doubting herself. She has so much to offer this world, and I wish the world would reciprocate the love and effort that she puts out. I hope that you live the happiest life possible as well, Jade, because you deserve to be happy, to feel safe and to feel at home. You deserve to be HAPPY with your life and to have confidence in everything you do, because frankly... everything you do leaves me speechless and awe-inspired.

@gloriousdevourerofstories - we haven’t spoken much lately. But I still consider you a dear friend. A wonderful mutual since the days of my old blog and so fun and exciting to talk to! Her love for reading and writing knows no bounds and she will support you no matter what. She deserves to have the same love and support and enthusiasm that she gives to others. I hope that you are happy. We haven’t really spoken in a while, but I hope whatever you’re up to, you’re happy doing it.

@confundere. Girl. Another great friend that I received through the blessing of support. You are... amazing. Such a blessing on this world. You are so warm and friendly and sweet, so fun to chat with and get to know. Someone I feel like I can open up to, even when you say the wrong thing or don’t know what to say... I still know you have my back because you genuinely care and I not only appreciate that about you, but it’s only one of the many reasons why I love you. You are an absolute sweetheart and I’m so glad to have met you on this damned site. I’m so grateful to everything you’ve done to me over the last 1+ year(s) and I’m so glad that we’re friends, even if we, too, haven’t really chatted in a while. Thank you for being a friend.

Another one I’ve known for a while, though I’m not really sure if you consider me as much of a friend as I consider you, would be @fatal-blow. Your art... is inspiring. It’s SO BEAUTIFUL! You are SO full of talent that it just warms and amazes me. You are so friendly! Even when I’m having self-doubts and feeling like my enthusiasm is annoying you, you are right there to reassure me, as many times as I need, that it’s not and that you appreciate it. And I love that; people that are willing to explain and re-explain their thoughts and feelings about things, even though they’ve said it ten, fifteen times... are my favorite kind of people, as a person with pretty damn bad anxiety. So thank you. Also, you’re just awesome.

@ofvisitorsthefairest, we haven’t chatted in a while but I still consider you my friend. People get busy, life happens and I totally get it. But I do appreciate you and your friendliness and how great you are. (: Thank you for being my friend and I hope things are going well for you right now. I hope you’re happy, because you deserve the world. No, the universe. (: stay healthy, friend!

@ramblingsofabourbondrinker is another person that I found again after I came back to tumblr. Though he now goes by his first name instead of his middle name, it was easy to find him because his blog name remained the same. That same ol’ bourbon drinker. :p if we ever meet up, I am totally going to a bar with you! I feel like you’d be such a fun person to drink with and swap random stories & story ideas with. (: I get SO EXCITED every time that I see you on my dash!! I’d be lying if I said you weren’t one of my tumblr crushes. You’re too amazing and wonderful not to be. But I hope that we stay friends, and keep our social life for a long time, because you’re one cool stud xD

@pens-swords-stuff was another of the first people I met through my writeblr, back on my old blog. We used to have long chats via her ask box, long enough that I’d keep having to wait for the hour to be up because I’d always send her all 10 asks within the hour and be too shy to message her. However, Undine is FAR from being a person to be scared of. She is warm and friendly and so helpful! She’s always there for the people that look up to her and that ask her questions, but it’s more than that. She’s isn’t Google for writers. She isn’t here to be used to get ahead in your writing. She is a wonderful, funny, friendly and kind-hearted person that deserves so much out of this life, and I hope she gets it! Thank you for putting up with me all these years, friend. <3

@theshadowsofthenight is someone that, maybe I haven’t spoken to A WHOLE LOT but I still consider a friend. Shadows is so friendly and nice!! And they’re always there to play my prompt games with me (they used to have so much fun with me, playing my 4 random words games, especially when I first started playing them), and I’ve loved every interaction with them. Stay your wonderful, beautiful self, friend!

And I’m sure there are so many that I’m leaving off. But I’m afraid this post is long enough. To every one of you, new and old, thank you so much for following me. Skurasday 15th of Raamer, 518 A.S. Year of 2 Fish - Reign of Queen Ingrid the Mighty

Rheia ran through the storm-tossed forest outside of Auberhaven. Lightning split the sky repeatedly, sending the world into brief, stark relief. 

A moment frozen in silver and shadow. Trees moaned in the wind and rain pelted down with a vengeance.

On and on, she ran, but still heard the heavy footfalls of something chasing her. Faster than it had any right to be.

It was gaining on her, the footsteps nearly overpowered by the rain, but she could still hear them. Feel the trembling in the earth as he approached.

Tell me about your WIP Tuesday

Hey @dawnoftheagez, I really like this idea!

My main WIP has been in the ‘In Progress’ phase for quite some time now, but while I’m editing Draft 7, I’ve been able to appreciate the side stories I’ve written in the same universe a lot more!

One these splinter stories is ShadowJack. I put on my snarky gumshoe detective hat while writing it, and even though I wasn’t quite sure how the mystery would be solved until Chapter 6, I’m really happy with how it turned out!

If you ask him, Jack Falcon will tell you he loves living in Halifax, Massachusetts. There’ll be a tinge of sarcasm in his voice, but if you ask him a second time, he’ll repeat his answer, and probably ask if you were deaf the first time around. But if you ask a third time, especially late at night with a couple of drinks between the two of you, you might get a different answer.

The shadows on the wall behind the private eye wouldn’t change, but they might loom over you, and dwarf Jack himself. Only then would you get the sense that there’s more to this detective than meets the eye.

Jack has left behind a lot of people, and pushed a lot of his past as far away as possible. It’s easier to pretend that it never happened. But you can’t shed a light without casting some shadows. And Jack, for better or worse, has made it his business to shed a light on things.

What’s your favorite part of the Writeblr Community?

I love how kind everyone is! I have several social media accounts all over, but I’m usually terrified of saying anything — I used to comment and post here and there, but I eventually went back and deleted everything and just became a lurker because I had such terrible experiences. With writeblr however, I never felt that same fear and reluctance to post, comment, and otherwise make my presence known. Plus, this place is full of such talent and inspiration!

What is something you love about you and your writing?

I love my characters! If there’s one thing I’m confident about in my writing — and honestly there’s not a whole lot of that yet — it’s my characters. Particularly the ones found in For Queen and Country. They’ve all become so in-depth and developed. Additionally, when I was younger I struggled a lot with differentiating my characters and they were all pretty bland, so I’m especially proud of how distinct they all are. They all have their own flavor, they all have become fully realized, and I always know exactly what they’ll do in any given situation because they’ve become so realized.

Compliment two writeblrs here! It can be anyone!

I am going to scream my love for @royalbounties​ forever!!! Jaecyn is probably one of the people I’ve had the pleasure of talking to the most and they’re always around when I want to chat, and I’m so grateful for that! They’re such a kind and supportive person who’s just an absolute joy to see on my dash. Also The Killing Song is such an amazing story!!!!!!

I also think that @esoteric-eclectic-eccentric​ deserves a lot more love and support then they currently receive!! Not only are they one of the most supportive people in this community, they’re a fantastic artist!!! I am confident that there is probably no one else that offers to do OC art at the frequency and quality that they do, and they also offer to send a lot of asks to people without asking for anything in return. Their art is so adorable, and their writing is so delightful as well!!! I’m particularly fond of their character names :)

Just to make this easier on me... I’m going to do the last 10 people I’ve messaged... that I’ve had a real, good conversation with.

So to begin, @dawnoftheagez. You already know how much I love you. I’ve learned more about you in the last week than I’ve learned about you in all of our time of talking! But I love how dark and twisted yet soft and sweet you are. You are so amazing and I am enjoying introducing you to new friends. I hope you make lots and lots of friends on this site.

@books-of-lunacy, man, girl... you’ve been having a rough time lately, but you know what?  You’ve been so strong and pushing through it. You’re amazing. And lovely. And incredible. I’m so glad to have met you and I hope that you live the most amazing and fulfilling life that you possibly can.

@jade-island-lives, oh, dear lord. If you don’t know how I feel about you by now, you never will xD I think you are one of the most incredible... sweet... loving... talented... strong... passionate people I’ve ever met. You have such a love for your OCs and it’s so fun to talk about our writing together because together, we have more passion for our writing & OCs than I’ve ever seen.

1) Do you write chapter titles? If so, ranks them from roman numerals to Rick Riordan in creativity.

Uuuuuh, yeah mostly? I’d say they’re about mid-way between Roman Numerals and Rick Riordan. >.>

2) Who is your favorite character that you’ve ever written?

Rheia, but also Abram??? And Elya??? Her books aren’t going to be for a while, but I did some RPs with her, and she’s just. So Good??? Innocent Confused Combat Baby???

3) What’s your favorite tropes to read?

Oooh, Slow Burn Romance is 10/10 one of my faves. It’s such blissful agony. >.> That’s the first one that comes to mind.

4) What is your max number of characters you’d be willing to write into the main cast of a WIP?

My first draft of my WIP had about 3-4 POV MCs for it, so I think that’s about my limit? 

5) What made you start writing?

In grade school, I had a lot of trouble expressing negative emotions without bursting into tears. A teacher suggested I try writing out the issues I had, and it actually worked?? Then I just applied the method to the stories I had in my head, but no one had the time to sit and listen to? I guess that’s what got me started writing. XD

6) What is one thing you would NEVER write?

I used to say that I would never write smut, but then my brain got kidnapped to Smutville and I couldn’t write anything BUT smut for about 2 weeks?

So I’m not ruling anything out per se, except that I don’t have much interest in sci-fi currently, so that’s probably not going to be a focus anytime soon.

7) If you could choose one genre to be the only one you could write for the rest of you life, what would it be?

Fantasy or Fantasy/Romance. Definitely. XD

8) Do you make playlists for your characters? Why or why not?

Not for any specific characters, really. I have a general “writing playlist” or select a song that suites the specific scene that I’ll put on repeat.

The closest to a character-specific song is for Abram, which Husband found and showed me (cuz he helped with like 90% of Abram’s character creation). “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

9) What is (one of) your favorite line(s) in your current WIP?

Only one???? Gaaaaaaaaaaaaah

In the back of her mind, that cold, distant voice sounded again. As if ice and starlight had converged. Bubbling up from the depths of her mind like the breath of an unspeakable beast from beneath the deepest seas.

10) If you could bring one of your OCs to life, who would it be?

Here’s a question, would bringing the character to life inherently bring the magics/world rules that make the character possible come to life as well?

Well, that’d still apply to any of my current WIP’s OCs so that doesn’t help me much, but I’d say Rheia. Mainly because she’d cause the least amount of trouble in the real world. XD
