I love when I'm writing a scene casually, not really focused or worried about proper grammar because it's only the rough draft and my attention is split elsewhere... But then I suddenly figure out how to write that one specific missing scene, bridging all the gaps, tying up every lose end. It feels so good. Like how it physically feels pressing the final puzzle piece in. My brain feels good.

When Comes the Dawn, book 1 of 2

Slide 2: wdym my fantasy story has to have magic?

Set in a fantasy world loosely set in the late antiquities/early middle ages., where everyone alive has the capability to harness magic. But actually using it requires strict and intensive education (and maybe a phD or 5) so most people only know very basic spells.

In Trinitarian belief, it’s believed that the goddess Meidther gave her blood to bring humans to life, and because of that people are imbued with magic. No living person can be alive without magic because it’s literally impossible! Wait -- the emperor of Aetier has a what????

So there’s this weird phenomenon where on very rare occasions, babies will be born without magic. Called “deadbornes”, these babies are incompatible with life and usually end up passing away minutes to days later. With one notable exception (we’ll circle back to this later)

Slide 3: the set-up

The Empire of Aetier (or if you ask any local: “the gods’ specialist little empire”) has a very unique way of handling succession in the imperial family. That way is murder. Just murder. All heirs plot against one another in a formal-informal system called “The King’s Game.” It’s supposed to be a competition of skills, but it’s kind of warped itself into state-sanctioned fratricide (NOT to be confused with a battle royale. That’s just uncouth /j)

The last King’s Game ended 22 years ago, when Dantalion vi Aetier defeated and killed his half-sister in battle. As the victor, he crowned himself the new Vasilier of the empire and proceeded to bring in a new golden age of prosperity for his people. And nothing is wrong and everything is beautiful, and there is no way this can go wrong

... right?

It all starts on the day Fenice was born... where instead of being the healthy and uber powerful child Dantalion expected her to be, Fenice turns out to be a deadborne. Deadbornes are considered harbingers of ill omens, and siring one is a terrible way to start your new reign. And even stranger still is the fact that Fenice...doesn’t die? Someone call the priest and ask them what does it mean if your death omen refuses to go away

Slide 4: The plot

The end of the Hesperia-Aetier war brought new lands under the Empire’s rule, and with it, new ways to gain power and prestige in the Imperial Court. The biggest thorn in the empire atm is that Hesperia’s last king is still wandering the lands somewhere, waiting to strike.

Imperessa Fenice vi Aetier (who’s still alive and kicking) just lost her mom in the war, and now she’s desperate to prove herself to her estranged father that she’s more than a disappointment and wasted potential. And what better way to do that than to succeed him as the next Vasilier?

The problem? Only those that undergo an Ascension are considered legitimate contenders for the throne. The other problem? Dantalion won’t give her one.

Fenice: “Trade offer: I receive my own province to rule and an Ascension. You receive the head of the deposed king of Hesperia.” Dantalion: “Deal. But you have to marry his brother though” Fenice: “What”

Now wedded and gifted with a province of her own to rule , Fenice actually has to set-up her own power base and follow through with her end of the deal to find and kill the runaway king, as well as extinguish the rebellions he’s so keen on igniting.

But the more she looks for him, the more she realizes he’s being backed by someone much more powerful. But who?

And on totally unrelated note, there seems to be some weird rumors going around of some guy claiming to be Aretos vi Aetier, the son of the very same person Dantalion killed during the King’s Game 20+ years back. But that’s obviously fake news. Surely no one will fall for it!

generally a nice guy but recent events has him very stressed and angry 24/7

has murderous urges almost all the time

My main project is Starborne, which is the largest, longest, and most fleshed-out of all my current projects. I try to mainly focus on one WIP at a time so I make sure I see it to completion. Starborne's main genres include high fantasy, romance, adult, adventure, and lgbt+. It will be divided into roughly 2-3 volumes due to its very unorthodox structure.

hi there, writeblr! i’ve been inactive for a long time (1+ years probably) and want to get back into the writing community here, so consider this my brand new introduction.

i’m tris, 20+, perpetually sleep-deprived, and the best at writing when i say i’m not and not writing when i say i am. i like to read, listen to music, play video games, and write. i’m also on twitter at @/triswrites.

cranesong: a prince, a thief, an assassin, and a liar walk into a bar. only one of them is who they say they are. this is the land of gods, monsters, and mortals. watch your back.

at the top of the tower of cranes is an untold treasure. whoever reaches it first will be pardoned for their crimes and freed from the prison. but for four, what they seek goes beyond the so-called treasure. they have nothing left to lose. at the top of the tower rests their future, no matter what it may be. fantasy. rapunzel meets tower of god.

When bodies from the morgue go missing, a memory thief joins a flapper to take part in a dangerous affair with an underground mob, in hopes to find the truth. Though their plan is not that simple when the siblings cross paths with a notorious killer. The suspect in question might be the evidence to their erased past. [ crime fantasy, koschei retelling ]

The Lacedaemonids are gifted in the art of war and Hyakinthos is no exception. He dreams of fame, to be remembered eternally and it grows into an obsession when he attracts the gods’ attention. So...You Want to be a Writeblr? | A Crash Course and Resource Guide

This post was primarily made for people wanting to make a writeblr and those new to the community in mind, but can be used for anyone. So, who am I? Hi, Maddie here. I've been on writeblr for a few years so I'm pretty sure I know how this whole writeblr thing works, and I wanted to give some advice that worked for me to new writeblrs who might not know where to start!

This crash course will generally cover these topics:

how to get started

intros and formatting them

interacting with the community

graphics, edits, and where to make them

helpful blogs

but if you'd like me to go over something that I missed or glossed over, feel free to send me an ask!

The first decision you'll have to make is whether your writeblr will be a primary or secondary blog. Primary blogs allows you to reply and follow other writeblrs as your writeblr, but it will require making another tumblr account if you want a clean slate. Secondary blogs will make it easier to keep everything under one account and move/change primary blogs as needed, but you can only interact with others as your primary blog outside of reblogs.

Once you've made your blog, I recommend taking some time to choose a good blog theme for people who visit your blog. You want something visually pleasing and easy to read/navigate.

@writerthemes is an entire blog centered on finding themes and pages for writeblrs.

Once you have your blog set up, go and make a writeblr intro! These serve to get your name out into the community and is a quick way show people who you are and what you're working on. You can format your intros however you want, but I recommend including these key points.

Writeblr intros tend to follow this general format:

General Personal Info: Name you'd like to go by, pronouns, age*, a little bit about yourself and your hobbies (optional)

Your WIPs: If you have multiple, give a brief summary of the plot and its genres. If you plan to only have one, feel free to combine your writeblr and wip intro

*Age: a lot of people on writeblr are young and/or cautious of people they interact with. It's absolutely ok to not specify your age, but at least indicate whether you are an adult or a minor and do not lie about your age range.

WIP Intros are a great way to summarize what your wip is about to anyone wanting to learn more. Most WIP intros tend to include the:

Title

Genre

Themes/Tropes

Summary

Excerpt (optional)

Brief summary of main characters (optional)

Draft Status (optional)

Character Intros are optional but they're popular posts to make. You can be as detailed or as vague as you want. Basic character intros include:

Their general Info: name, age, pronouns

Excerpt (optional)

Writeblr is a community for writers to make friends and find support; what you get out of writeblr depends on what you give back to it, and that means taking the first step and interacting with others. There's no foolproof way to get the kind of interactions you might want, but here's a couple of ways that worked for me:

Interact with other people's wips: find writeblrs and wips you like and start commenting on them! Even if it's just in the tags, or a reaction image, or a key smash.

Participate in ask events like Storyteller Saturday (StS), Meet and Greet Monday (MGM or MaGM), and Worldbuilding Wednesday (WbW): Send people asks relating to their wip on these days. It's a good way to start interacting with other people and most writeblrs tend to send an ask back. There are also a lot of open questions posted on writeblr that you can reblog and answer.

Use common writeblr tags to get your posts out: #writeblr #writers on tumblr #writing #writers some writeblr networks also have open tags for anyone to used

Join a writing discord: there are a lot of writing discord groups floating around, and the informality of discord makes it a lot easier to get to know other writers. It's also a good place to get writing advice, wip help, share your work with others, and just have fun. (Shameless promo for wtw - come join us guys <3)

— graphics, edits, and where to make them.

Writeblr is a place specifically for writing, but I can't deny that people are more likely to pay attention to a work if there's pretty graphics to go along with it. For people who might be new to making graphics or edits, here are a few resources to get you started

Canva.com is a great resource for beginners. It's a free browser-based graphic design platform with a lot of free photos and graphics you can mess around with. You need to make an account to use it and some resources are behind a pay wall, but you can do a lot of things with what is free.

Unsplash, Pixabay, and Pexels are some of the best places to get unlicensed, royalty-free photos to use in your graphics as opposed to pinterest.

Tumblr also has a lot of free PSDs you can use to make edits. You'll need some basic photoshop skills and a photoshopping software. Make sure to credit the maker if you use their PSD.

Photopea is a free, broswer-based Photoshop alternative. It has a tendency of crashing or lagging sometimes, but it gets the job done.

GIMP is another Photoshop alternative that you can download to your computer.

This is far from an extensive list of writing-resource blogs out there. These are just a few blogs that have helped me in my own writing and what I hope might help you guys too.

The ScriptX Blog Family is an ever growing and changing network of blogs of content experts ranging from a wide variety of topics ranging from psychology, medicine, equestrians, military, autism, ballet, foodies, etc.

@writingwithcolor a wonderful writing/resource blog centered around racial, ethnic, and religious diversity. For those writing characters outside their own race/ethnicity/religion, here is a good place to ask questions and concerns you might not easily be able to answer.

@rainbowwriting a writing/resource blog centered around helping writers include better LGBTQIA+ diversity. [Note: I'm not certain if they're still active, but their archive is still a good place to read up on and get information.]

@wordsnstuff had a ton of writing-related resources from developing plot, characters, researach, drafting, prompts, and even genre-specific resources.

@inky-duchess is not only a fantastic writer but she's also very knowledgable on European history, how monarchies and the aristocracy work, and different writing theories.

@pens-swords-stuff is both a wonderful writer and a good source of writing-related advice!

@howtofightwrite a blog for writers looking to write realistic fight scenes

@mimzy-writing-online is another great writer and a writing advice blog! They have a useful advice series on writing visually-impaired and blind characters as well as more general writing-related advice.

Tips for New Writeblrs

i’ve been seeing a lot of new and young writeblrs popping up recently, and i know the community can seem a bit daunting at first so i decided to make a post with some tips i wish i’d have known when i first joined!

↳ INTERACTION IS KEY

first off, and i cannot stress this enough, is the importance of interacting with other writeblrs. this community is here to help us all grow as writers, and one of the best ways to do that is to find writer friends. there’s so many incredible wips on writeblr, and it’s a genuine treat to get to see them develop further. interaction comes mostly through reblogs on tumblr, but for making actual friends, your best bet is joining a writing discord server. @welcometowriteblr​ is an example of a writeblr net with an open discord, but there are also many others out there catering to specific genres and subcategories.

↳ CLOUT IS MEANINGLESS

tumblr is bad enough at interaction on its own, but it’s especially true in communities like writeblr. unlike litblr graphics or fanart, writeblr content usually doesn’t come with a built-in audience unless you’re writing fic. so instead of trying to appeal to trends and getting lost in a sea of identical wips, your priority should be creating something you’re actually passionate about. a wip is a huge commitment, and it’s important to find a project you love instead of hopping from trend to trend. it’s ok to drop wips and realize that maybe it’s not the right time to write them, but wips are not solely there for notes.

↳ WRITEBLR, NOT GRAPHICBLR

it may not always seem like it, but this is in fact a writing community, and not a graphics one. making pretty graphics can be really fun, as well as doubly functioning as a procrastination tool. however, the main reason we’re all here is to write. don’t spend all your time on making pretty pictures for tumblr and then only ever complaining about how you never write. a lot of the most popular meme posts are jokes about writeblrs never writing, but the community is called writeblr for a reason.

↳ DO YOUR RESEARCH

so you have a wip idea. now what? now it’s research, research, research. this is especially prevalent in fantasy worldbuilding but really applies everywhere: you cannot pick and choose the parts of a culture you like while ignoring all others and their implications. there are certain topics that need to be handled with delicacy, which in itself requires a lot of research on its own. then there’s writing characters different from you. there is a vast difference between tokenism and representation, and the first thing is to make sure you actually treat your characters and world with respect. don’t rely on people from those groups to call you out for your mistakes—google is free, and it’s not their job to deal with your mistakes. if people are open to helping though, you should reach out to them if you still haven’t found your answers. @writingwithcolor is an excellent resource, and there are many other blogs dedicated to giving advice.

↳ CHOOSE ACCESSIBILITY

this is a community focused on writing, so your priority should be making that writing as accessible as possible. i know scripts and fancy text are a popular aesthetic, but @ikilledmyocs made an excellent post here as to why you should avoid them; namely, they’re an accessibility nightmare. i promise that your posts will still look nice, and more importantly, they’ll actually be readable. the same goes for blog themes. large text and high contrast are your friend! @serpentarii has a wonderful theme recommendation post here with some examples of writer-friendly themes.

↳ DON’T GET CAUGHT UP IN PROSE

and lastly, this applies particularly to new writers in general. very purple, floral prose is popular on writeblr, and sometimes it can seem like it’s the only writing on here at all. however, you’re here to actually write a wip. the purpose of your first draft is to exist, not to win a pulitzer, and it’s perfectly ok for it to suck. making it actually good is the job of future drafts; after all, you can’t paint a house that hasn’t been built yet. your writing style will come with time, and simpler writing also has its place up there with pretty prose. i can promise that coherence is far more important than putting nice-sounding words together without actually knowing what they mean. that isn’t to say that floral prose is bad, but it isn’t the only writing of value, and i think that we sometimes forget that on writeblr. just sit down, take a breath, and write.
