The voluntary effort by online platforms dates back to 2022, and sets out a range of commitments and measures to counter fake news online. All major online platforms except Elon Musk’s X will by July see voluntary commitments on disinformation formalised under the EU’s platform rules, the Digital Services Act (DSA), the European Commission announced on Thursday. The integration of the code of practice on disinformation into the DSA will “make it a benchmark for determining platforms' compliance with the DSA”, the Commission said. The code, dating back to 2022, was initiated and signed by 42 companies including Google, Meta, Microsoft and TikTok. It sets out a broad range of voluntary commitments and measures to counter online disinformation, such as transparency of political advertising and cooperation during elections. Making it more formal will mean that the Commission can more easily assess whether the companies comply with the DSA. However, signing it does not “presume innocence”, a senior EU official said.

Beware clickbait accusations

Hi fandom, here's what happened yesterday: A reporter named Rachel Johnson, who is the sister to Boris Johnson and a big terfy supporter of JK Rowling, released a 4-part true crime podcast featuring two women accusing Neil Gaiman of SA. Yesterday. The day before the UK elections. This post explores the possible political links in more detail.

CW: this post is free of graphic details, but if you follow these links, there may be explicit descriptions of sex, kink, and bdsm, plus mentions of mental illness and suicidal thoughts.

I want to believe and support survivors, and I also want to base my thoughts and actions on facts. I thought the xitter livestream commentary from Not Becky for all 4 episodes was very insightful. There's also a first episode transcript without extra commentary. (Edit: released after I wrote this post: the full audio plus transcripts for all four episodes of the podcast are now available to download here, or you can read all four transcripts in your browser.) I have since concluded (pending more time to think and read and learn, or any new information, of course):

This seems like the worst kind of clickbait, an unjustified mess that will hurt everyone involved (except possibly a few politicians who might benefit somehow, we'll see). The evidence the "reporters" present directly contradicts their accusations. They're counting on people reading headlines and not digging any deeper.

They tried to make something sinister where there was apparently consent and a caring relationship. Have they exploited one or both of these women? S, in particular, is described as vulnerable and with a history of unspecified mental illness. They have all of the message history between S and Neil, and her messages make the sexy stuff between the two of them sound enthusiastically consensual. There are even messages (multiple!) where she specifically says everything was consensual. Here's one:

They're playing horror music in the background to try to make us feel horrified, even as S reassures us that things were consensual. It's emotional manipulation by the reporters.

The times S sounds upset during the interview are the times she talks about Neil leaving her behind or not paying attention to her. Not the times she talks about consent violations. Her stories during the interview are inconsistent, and they contradict her messages with Neil and with others. Maybe we'll get better information from a more reputable news source, or maybe not, I don't know. I also don't know why anyone who cares about her would have advised her to do this interview.

Then they tracked down lots of other women who know/have dated Neil and they all had glowing things to say, except one other lover from 20 years ago, K. She described some bad sex, and then pointed to a time in their 2-year relationship when she felt something wasn't consensual and he thought it was. And after their breakup, they continued to text and flirt, for decades.

This podcast "exposé" feels like explosive clickbait with political ramifications. The evidence here doesn't support a pattern of poor conduct so much as establish Neil as a fellow well-meaning human with imperfect judgement. That doesn't mean the accusations are all made up; intimate partner violence is complicated, and the responsibility for checking in and getting regular enthusiastic consent from partners is very real, especially when kink or bdsm are involved.

I don't know what the right balance is here between supporting survivors, thinking critically, assuming good intentions, and waiting for better information, but I feel confident that this podcast alone is not enough to condemn anyone aside from the irresponsible journalists who inflicted it on the rest of us.

Hello! So sorry to bother, but have you had any updates on the Word-Stream/Speechify situation?

Just one: like I posted on Xitter and Bluesky last night, as of yesterday afternoon, the links to individual works as they were listed on WordStream are gone from both Google and Bing. Hurray, right? Surely we’re all sick of this whole debacle and there’s far more important things to worry about. If all is well that ends well, surely there’s no need to still be angry.

Well, I am. Here’s why:

When I checked on Wednesday, the links to my own work on WordStream were still listed. So rather than it taking a week after Cliff Weitzman first hid the fanwork from view, it took a little over a week from the moment he first promised privately that they would be deleted. Which, fine. Perhaps Cliff didn’t really know what he was talking about when he gave that timeframe. Or maybe he told a little white lie to create the impression that he always intended to do the right thing. It seems more likely to me, though, that Cliff still believed—even after the backlash he received—that he would get away with honoring only individual takedown requests. Or worse, that he needed just a little bit more time with the stolen material to figure out an alternative way to profit off it—preferably without us noticing, this time.

But who knows? I certainly don’t! All we can do is speculate, because publicly, Cliff Weitzman has remained completely silent on his copyright infringements. All we got was the initial justifications he and his sockpuppet accounts used in comments on the original Reddit and Tumblr posts. After those were so understandably ill-received, Cliff only ever communicated with a few individual authors who contacted him directly and repeatedly, blocking people who addressed the issue on Twitter and quietly distancing himself from WordStream by deleting a blog he’d posted to Speechify.com dated December 20th—where Cliff promoted WordStream’s platform specifically to fanfiction readers. (See my enormous timeline post for details and screenshots of said posts before they were taken down.)

And this is why I’m still angry: As long as Cliff Weitzman faces no real consequences for his actions, he won’t see a need to own up to his mistake; and as long as he’s able to delay taking responsibility, this isn’t over. This didn’t end well.

After all, wasn’t this the next-best scenario for Cliff, second only to him turning WordStream into a (for him) effortless, infinite money-making machine? He took something we provided for free and fed it to AI so he could more easily put it behind a paywall; we found out and protested; Cliff quietly erased all evidence of his crime; and we went—almost equally quietly—away.

I want to make sure you know that I continue to be genuinely amazed and intensely grateful for how quickly the news about WordStream’s copyright infringement was shared—and continues to be shared—throughout fandom, on tumblr in particular. If it hadn’t been for our collective outcry here and on Reddit, WordStream would very likely still be up in its original form, and Weitzman would be reaping the benefits (those subscription prices were steep) today.

But it’s been frustrating to see that, with the exception of mentions in articles on Substack and Fansplaining (the latter of which is a particularly awesome and thorough read on fandom’s decontextualization) and a Fanlore listing, our outrage never really spilled out beyond the safely insulated, out-of-the-way spaces that are tumblr, a handful of subreddits and bluesky. And I believe that—unfortunately—we are collectively responsible for that part, as well.

Most of us seemed content to only spread the word by circulating the same two posts on tumblr. (Have we all given up completely on every other social media platform? Am I the only remaining straggler?) And soon after Cliff Weitzman hid WordStream’s fanfiction category from view, our interest in the issue took a sharp dive even there. Are we genuinely deceived into believing the issue has been fully resolved? Do we truly fail to realize that Weitzman’s refusal to admit that what he did was wrong left the door wide open for the next greed-driven tech bro to wander through? Or is the true naivety in thinking that, as a community, we can keep this kind of attack on fandom from happening again? Has our disillusionment already gotten that bad?

However the situation spins out from here, Cliff’s actions will set a precedent. If we fail to show Cliff and his ilk that attempts to profit off fandom’s unpaid labor have consequences, their tech companies will keep trying until something eventually sticks. They might be a little smarter about it next time; obscure their sources a bit better, maybe leave the titles and the authors’ names off. Or maybe they’ll go a bolder route: maybe next time they cross the line they’ll do it boldly enough for IP holders to take notice and stop tolerating fanwork entirely.

Doesn’t that make you angry, too?

There’s this whole other mess of thoughts I would love to be able to untangle about how commercial influence is contributing to the steady erosion of fandom’s foundations, but I’m tired, and other people have said it all much more eloquently than I ever could. Seriously, go read that article on Fansplaining. Or listen to the podcast version of it. Better yet, as long as you’re wearing your noise-canceling headphones, go listen to a podfic of one of your favorite fandoms’ works, and enjoy the collaborative joy and creativity of the people who Cliff Weitzman refuses to believe exist. (In one of Speechify’s other blogs, Cliff claims there are only 272 podfics on AO3. Would you like to run that ChatGPT prompt again, Cliff?). Honestly, much like Cliff Weitzman’s infuriating denial of the fact that fandom fucking has this covered, thank you very much, there’s so. Many. More. Things for us to talk about. There’s the connotations of WordStream’s dubious ‘upload’ button, for instance, or the fact that the app scraped (and in some cases, allegedly, still lists) copyright-protected original fiction as well, or WordStream’s complete lack of contact information, which is illegal for an internationally operating app. And oh! Has anyone reported more thoroughly on Cliff’s app’s options to ‘simplify’ or ‘modernize’ uploaded works, or—my own very favorite abomination—to translate them into something Cliff calls ‘Gen-Z Language’? Much like his atrocious AI book covers, it would be hilarious, if it didn’t make steam come out of my ears.

Anyway, there it is. I highly recommend you do all of that. And then, if you aren’t familiar with it already, go do some research re: fair use and your rights as the copyright owner of your works. A good number of people commenting on this controversy expressed stunned surprise or fearful hesitation about claiming any sort of ownership of their fanfiction. The more informed we are about our rights, the more willing we will be to defend them.

Please don’t stop writing or sharing your work. If you can’t bring yourself to work on your WIPs today (trust me, I get it), post about this situation instead. Tweets, skeets, whateverthefucks—about WordStream’s theft, about how this reflects on Speechify’s already shady business practices, about how Cliff’s actions and justifications have personally affected you. You’re welcome to share or copy my posts on these platforms, but since Cliff already blocked me, I very much prefer you post your own. If you do, call Cliff Weitzman by his full name and tag or include both WordStream and Speechify to ensure Weitzman will recognize he has both a personal as well as a professional stake in handling the situation with integrity. Leave your concerns in reviews on the Speechify app. (We weren’t provided with a more appropriate place to put them, after all!) Consider calling for a Speechify boycott until Cliff accepts accountability for his actions.

Do avoid making exaggerated claims, and don’t call for physical retaliation against Cliff’s person or his property. We don’t want to give him or Speechify even the weakest of grounds to claim defamation or threats of violence. Focus on the facts: they’re incriminating enough by themselves. Show Cliff that we’re determined to keep bringing up his company’s wrongdoings in public spaces until he demonstrates that he understands why taking these freely shared fanworks and monetizing them was wrong, and takes steps to ensure it won’t happen again.

One last thing—and this is really more of a general reminder—please stop suggesting I handle this situation for you. People have come to me asking for action items. The resulting flashbacks to my days as an office assistant were extremely upsetting. In all seriousness, casting me as some sort of coordinator or driving force behind this backlash actively hurts the cause. Not only does it downplay fandom’s collective efforts, it also makes our message extremely vulnerable. It would be all too easy for Cliff to silence one singular source. Wikipedia will not maintain mentions of this controversy as long as it leads only to Easter Kingston’s attempt to summarize what happened as it was happening. You only know my name because I stumbled upon WordStream’s theft and decided to get my friends involved. I am not more knowledgeable, more skilled or more angrily invested in this issue than you are (or can, or should, be). I draw pictures and I write stories and I worry about the shift I’m seeing in fandom after having been on this ride for even a few pre-livejournal rounds.

I’m not going to stop doing any of those things. But I am going to allow myself to step away for a bit, make my wife dinner, and catch up on our shows.

Welcome new Transformers fans!

You might have seen this Don't Make Me Tap The Sign meme floating around. Transformers One has been out for a little while now so I want to expand on it as well as some other TF fandom things.

What does "Transformers doesn't have a set canon" actually mean?

Essentially, every new Transformers story is a reboot. They might draw from or expand on concepts from previous iterations but canonically each continuity family is separate. This means all lore is extremely flexible - origin stories, relationships, even personalities can change wildly between iterations and while some may be better or worse than others, they are all equally canon.

For example: Orion Pax was a dock worker in G1, an archivist in Prime, and a miner in TF One. None of these contradict each other.

Continuities also tend to share ideas without being directly connected. For example Transformers One draws from Transformers Prime in multiple ways (e.g. it features Airachnid) but it is not a prequel to Prime and in fact directly contradicts it. Yes I know there's a guy on xitter claiming tfone is a prequel to the Bay movies but he's wrong.

What is a continuity family?

Most storylines include tie-in novels, comics, video games, and other shows that all share the same canon.

The Aligned Continuity is the most well known. It consists of Transformers Prime, Rescue Bots, Rescue Bots Academy, Robots in Disguise 2015, multiple video games, and some tie-in novels and comics. They are all ostensibly set in the same canon... except the Aligned Continuity is inconsistent so even its lore is loose :')

My point is that while every continuity is separate, some shows are connected.

(Sorry if this is confusing. It is confusing. You get used to it)

What about fanon?

The Transformers franchise is old enough that a lot of fanon has become so pervasive it exists in a sort of nebulous space where it feels like it could be canon or at least become canon once enough fans are working for Hasbro but essentially: oh boy is there a lot of fanon

For example: seeker trines, doorwing speak, the Unicron Singularity and all forms of robot sex (sorry) are fanon, but they appear so often in fanworks that it's easy to get confused (I know I do!)

It's safest to assume something isn't canon unless you've seen it in a show (and even then, it may only be canon to that particular show)

Can I mix-and-match in my own fanworks?

Absolutely! It's very common for creators to set a story in one continuity but transplant a character from another, or use a different backstory, or borrow whole plot points from different canons. Chop up that lore and make a delicious continuity soup.

So why is this important?

It is very, very, very, very, very frustrating to be "corrected" about something that isn't relevant, or to see someone critisize a show based on lore that doesn't apply, or to have a character be called OOC when they're not, etc. I think a lot of fandom slapfights could be avoided if more people understood how loose Transformers canon actually is. Do what you want with your own creations but please be mindful when it comes to interacting with other people's.

You don't have to know everything about Transformers to be in the fandom and have a good time - if you're only interested in TF One that is perfectly alright, you don't need to watch every show and read every comic and play every game to be considered a fan of something.

But if you want to find out more I recommend checking out the TFWiki - it isn't perfect but it gives a good rundown of most general lore as well as details about specific shows.

I'm trying to get my creative juices flowing again so I can get back to rambling and writing, but the recharge is slow going. I am starting to get little sparks back, but only enough for one of those small little off the wall "what if" scenarios I used to post over on xitter before it decided it didn't like me posting/reblogging/replying anymore. So I figured, heck, why not encourage myself and revive a fun time over here?

So with that said, here's a fun little cursed thought for everyone to play with.

Remember how Ian kept stressing over anyone finding out about the private things they do together? What if the problem wasn't just internalized shame and fear that anyone might know that Ian was having sex and being "sinful"?

What if the problem was the relationship itself? What if Ian and MC being together romantically as partners was the thing what he desperately wanted to keep from everybody and convinced MC to keep it a secret? What if no one knew that they were anything more than friends?

Well, except for Shaun, of course, considering he walked in on Ian naked in MC's bed eager for some action. It's kind of hard to come up with a platonic reason for Ian to be naked in their bed surrounded by lit candles, rose petals, and mood music.

I mean... Ian did have goals of becoming an actor and model. He did say being seen on a date would be bad for his image after all... Perhaps MC feeling like Ian's dirty little secret was just another reason why their relationship fell apart, and why he fell to the temptation to cheat.

After all, what better way for Ian to convince a person that he's not in a monogamous relationship than by sleeping with them?

There's plenty of angsty possibilities with this idea, especially if a MC doesn't exactly match up with cis/hetero-standard norms and/or conventional "ideal" beauty standards... or even simply doesn't have the same hypersexualized figure as the lady in the porn ecchi Ian enjoys reading. It could be quite the blow to anyone's self-confidence if MC questioned if Ian wouldn't be ashamed to let everyone know he was in a relationship with a girl that looks like her.

Huh. This post went longer than I expected and turned into a bit of a ramble. Awesome! I guess I should do this more often to get my creative juices flowing again.

Anyway, I hope y'all enjoy playing with the "what if" possibility that Ian and MC's relationship was a secret no one was supposed to know.

I haven't spoken much/at all about the avewy situation so idk why you're here except to try and stir up more intracommunity resentment and fighting. Given that you're clearly a radfem, that's kinda a given.

I, and many others, were already aware of Rita's transandrophobic remarks and stances. Literally going through Lou's own blog, whom is the person your radblr blog screenshotted, shows that while he was directly subjected to Rita's harassment, that he still believes that what is happening to her is not right. This is the stance of the majority of the trans people who use the transandrophobia word and tags.

To be clear, Rita is not a good person imo. From the little I've seen of her time on tumblr, she and I would've had some serious beef. That said, her situation has brought to stark attention something that black people, sex workers, and trans people have known about for awhile: tumblr does not give a shit about you and is rather terribly run.

The CEO's escalation of harassment to fucking xitter proves that we're as much in the hands of a tech manchild as xitter itself.

I've not been talking about Rita because the situation isn't news to me. Like I said, it's been talked about plenty before, but it's blowing up now partially because this is an attractive white woman who is being targeted by the CEO and it lines up with a sexual harassment copypasta being sent out to trans femme people on tumblr (second part is more of an extrapolation on my part). Hey! So, writing and things

Hey! So, things.

Good Omens: As my energy and health comes back I've been working on "in hiatus" fics, which feels great. All my fics are my babies, and I hate neglecting them. I'm encouraged that not everyone seems to have forgotten them.

I also have only two fics to go in the 31 first kisses series. The penultimate one will probably be movie scriptverse, and I'm planning something special for the very last.

Other fannish stuff: Eagerly waiting the last season of my beloved Malevolent. I loved Thunderbolts* and it's got me back into actually using my Marvel Unlimited account. FInally caught up with my favourite, Runaways, including Daken: Dark Wolverine which was terrible edgy shit and Ironfist and Power Man which was great, ready for the 5 issues limited series of Runaways coming out next month. Started New Champions, looking for some other book or event. If anyone is into comics, I like lower powered/D rank characters with strong character arcs, open to (Marvel) suggestions.

Original writing: I want to get back into self-publishing and I've been writing like hell, a mixture of fluffy romcom and erotica, and the sequel to my one m/m Regency. I also have a book (dark-ish m/m romance) on sub, wish me luck.

Social Media: I've also been arguing too much on Reddit, which is a bad habit, and I'm thinking about blasting my account from space. I don't enjoy arguments, they make me feel restless and unhappy. My positions on things have been pretty consistent: support AO3 as a non-commercial space which hosts all fanfic regardless of other concerns, maintain author control over archived fanfic (including tagging), don't bully people for what they read or write, don't like don't read, if you find yourself reading something you don't like, make use of the back-button.

Should be pretty uncontroversial as they are the founding ethos of the site, huh? But Reddit is full of Xitter and TikTok damaged antis and people immersed in the Tumblr subculture of "everything you do for fun should be a side hustle or link to donations" and it just gets exhausting.

I should nuke it. But I kind of feel also that when people spread misconceptions or direct lies about tag wrangling, I should be there to help? I don't know.

Other things: I've been roleplaying more consistently. Mostly the Labyrinth rpg which if you can get your hands on it is brilliant and, satisfying, looks like Sarah's book. My wife is keen to play D&D 5.5e or whatever it's called, and play duet, with me running her as a party through it. Solo RPG is still fun, still in In Nomine-verse (which Good Omens fans should totally check out).

Australian election went extremely well, except that the Greens (the one party I have any kind of loyalty to, although I'm too Australian for real party loyalty) got less seats than usual. But at least Temu Trump was decidedly shown the door and the Lesser Evil of the parties is in majority government. Huge relief.

Real life: I had to register kiddo for High School. Mind blowing. He won't be going, but... my baby will be thirteen next year!

He is still the best kid in the entire universe, and romana03 is the best wife.
