anyway the most frustrating thing about Gretchen Felker-Martin's upcoming Red Hood run is how it feels next to impossible to express potential concerns over the run without immediately having your take bandwagoned and twisted by people who are running with the most bad faith interpretation possible of every single thing she says or does and refusing to give even a shred of a benefit of the doubt to a comic that, i cannot stress this enough, *is not out yet.*
i recently posted about my tentative excitement for the run and by and large, i do stand by what i said in that post. i still think GFM's novels are great works, i still think Beast World wasn't the worst Jason comic, and i still think the concepts for the run sound interesting. but given her recent interview and some reason bluesky posts, my excitement is certainly more hedged, i won't pretend otherwise. but it's wildly frustrating to see people twist her words in the worst way possible and share out of context screenshots of the interview they clearly haven't even read. how am i supposed to expect this fandom to read her run with an open mind if they can't read an *interview* to form their own opinion? any shred of valid criticism/concern is immediately muddled by misgyony and transphobia and people doing full on acrobatics to make assumptions about GFM and her run. am i concerned she hasn't read any Red Hood comics or Huntress comics? yes. am i concerned her frame of reference for Helena seems to be that god awful Birds of Prey movie? yes. and am i concerned that she doesn't seem to understand the root of either of these characters? also yes.
but given the fact these two characters literally cannot get any worse? i don't know what you think GFM is going to do, exactly. Jason and Helena have both been at rock bottom for characterization for literal decades. and i can't help but feel male/cishet writers don't get half of this heat for their garbage takes on these characters that set them so far back in the first place. GFM's run might be great, it might be garbage, but it's likely not going to be able to return either of these characters to their "peak era" that fans worship, which atp, was nearly 20 years ago, which seems to be the only thing fans of either character want in order to be appeased and not rip GFM to shreds.
i just can't help but feel like this fandom is setting GFM up to be this generation's Devin Grayson. ie: the queer woman who is their lamb to slaughter to lay every bad writing/character choice for the next ten years onto, regardless of her control and/or involvement of the choices. with the even deeper irony being that Devin Grayson's mythical Nightwing run was *actually good*, most people just either didn't read it, or read only the notorious highlights in incredibly bad faith. it seems like GFM has no room for mediocrity here. unless her run is literally perfection, you're all going to rip her to shreds for it and jump at the bit to be transphobic/misogynistic in ways that aren't even subtle.
#red hood 2025#Jason Todd#Helena Bertinelli#gretchen felker martin#again this post goes on pvp mode in the main tags idgaf#necrotic festerings#fandom wank#DC wank#i am purposefully not linking/quoting the interview/posts for a reason#find it yourself and read it yourself and make your own opinions that are not spoonfed to you#i think regardless of all else it'll be an interesting run#i certainly have a lot to say about things she said in the interview#i just don't think they would add any particular nuance to the conversation currently#so im withholding most public commentary until the comic is out#ive certainly said things privately bc i do like to run my mouth#i just think the public hate train has run it's course and it's barely been 24 hrs since the interview came out which says. a lot.#like do we really think she can do more damage than ppl like scott lobdell or tony daniels. let's be so fucking for real.#the only thing that truly baffled me is uh. i don't think she knows what rebirth is lol?#could've read it wrong but i think when the interviewer mentioned Jason Todd: Rebirth (ie referring to the Rebirth iteration of the chara)#she completely misunderstood/didn't get the term.#which damn she was not kidding about reading *nothing* then#hilarious she didn't read H2SH tho. good for her actually. fuck H2SH i hope she never reads it so it doesn't taint her vision#idk what the overall point of this post is#just pontificating over things some of my friends and i have said privately about our fears for this comic vs the overblown reaction#like idk man just saying “i don't think this run is gonna be good” is fine#but turning it into a trash talking session about GFM? yikes my man#and dragging up every bad tweet you can find? and most aren't even bad? lmao#oh nooo she enjoyed the incest in the massively popular show about incest.#crucify her guards. He doesn't talk anymore.
It was a jarring switch, and everyone still isn't used to Steve's persistent silence.
Because before, he was nearly as chatty as Dustin. Always trying to make the kids laugh, yelling at them and calling them shitheads (albeit lovingly).
He doesn't even laugh anymore.
His windpipe had been badly crushed by the demobat's tail wrapped snugly around his neck.
He had needed surgery.
Surgery that had only added to the lacerations and the keloid scars around on his neck.
And really, it's not that he can't talk.
He couldn't for awhile, and it still hurts sometimes.
But he doesn't fucking want to.
He has nothing left to say.
Because he had made peace with death.
Several times, actually. Throwing the burning bottles, being choked in a dried-out lake by a creature straight from his nightmares.
In fact, he had been mostly ready to venture into the sweet beyond since last summer.
His leg shook under the table, and he was staring at the silver ring on his thumb, spinning it around, and around.
He didn't really like when Robin left him alone at their donation table, she was much better at talking to the people that stopped by, bringing more clothes they didn't need, or coming to pick up something to replace what's been lost.
But Robin was doing her best to move on. Chatting up Vickie in some corner, somewhere.
A small cough got Steve's attention.
It was Susan. Hargrove. Mayfield? Did she go back to her previous name after her abusive husband left her with the corpse of his son?
"I found another box. I guess Maxine had been-" her eyes welled up, and Steve's hands stopped spinning the ring around his thumb. "Well, I think she kept some things of his."
Steve's hands shook as he stood up.
He knew Billy and Max had been much closer than they let on.
He knew Max missed Billy more than she could really express.
He opened the box.
Right on top.
It was that fucking jacket.
The brown leather one. The one that was older and softer, more worn than anything else Billy owned.
Because he loved it. Because he took care of it. Because it was his favorite.
And something in Steve broke a little, and he raised the jacket to his face, and he breathed in deeply. He didn't care who saw. He didn't care that Susan's face had gone pale and her tears had started falling for real.
"Oh."
He barely heard her voice over the blood rushing in his ears, the smell and the memories and don't fucking cry, Steven!
Susan closed the box up carefully. Steve finally lowered the jacket.
"I can put this in your car. So you can keep them. You deserve to-" she glanced down at his hands, and the silver ring, tarnished and glinting on his thumb. "keep them."
Steve brought his hand up to his wobbling chin, touching his fingertips gently under his lip, bringing his hand back down, palm up.
Thank you.
He hoped she got it. Understood the way she understood his tears.
She took his hand briefly.
"I wish we had met differently. I wish-well. I'm sure you wish the same thing."
Steve nodded. His leg had started shaking again, making his whole body tremble. He felt unsteady on his feet.
He fished his keys out of his pocket, handing them to Susan so she could take the box and tuck it in his trunk.
"You take care, then. You, you remember him well."
Steve nodded again, hot tears dripping off his chin.
Yes, ma'am. He wanted to say. I'll never forget him.
But,
he doesn't talk anymore.

You talk a lot about Donnie's triggers when it comes to Raph and Leo, but what about Mikey? Is there anything specifically related to him that would freak Donnie out?
mikey gets brought up the least because he's the least physically imposing, and he very rarely got violent. his abuse was almost solely psychological, at least in the beginning, whereas raph was mostly verbal and leo was a mix of,, uh. everything lol (note that even before he smacked him, even before the closet, he was mentioned to be throwing things at him). most of mikey's abuse was caused by leo except for that one incident in the kitchen, so donnie tends to see leo as more of a threat than he does mikey when he's in a bad headspace. when mikey's alone, he doesn't think he's going to be hurt UNLESS he seriously seems to upset or anger him. (i think if donnie ever hurts mikey during an episode, he's going to take it a lot worse than if it were raph and leo. partially because he's smaller and younger, but also because of. right after the closet. yeah)
i actually think most of the things specifically about mikey were addressed in cw, though, because they were more emotional things-- the fear of being talked about when he wasn't around, for example. all of the food insecurity stems from him, too. leo was a nasty evil gaslighter but mikey was the one that just outright lied constantly, mostly in an effort to "protect donnie's feelings" (or at least to look like he was) and that's a big reason he finds that so uncomfortable. of course he's going to correlate hiding things to actually protect his feelings with talking behind his back.
#ask#canary continuity#cw abuse#mikey is actually so awful about the lying in cl im surprised it isnt brought up much here#i think the faux-empathy is nastier than if he'd just been outright cruel#he'd laugh along when leo bullied him and acted awful and then turn around and hide the depths of how involved he actually was#constantly told donnie it was okay. even hugged him pretty soon before the closet. lead him along and then crushed him#and i do think its fascinating because you gotta wonder about how much of that was like .... actually him#mikey was kind of at war with himself. with raph he fell so easily into it because it twisted a pre-existing mindset#he'd fight against it but only when it veered into territory that was too cruel for him to justify to himself#but with mikey i think he knew better than anyone else that something was WRONG#hell. after donnie pushed him and lashed out i do think he WAS actually upset. four days and he still didnt expect him to be mad#''it was just three hours'' was a lie because he was trying to save his own skin. because there WAS a small part of him that hated the idea#-of donnie being upset with him#it's unseen but i think them going on and on about donnie ''hitting'' mikey was a big reason he shifted from then on#every moment of clarity he had was just smothered by leo and raph feeding into the curse and telling him he had the right to be mad#idk inevitably mikey's greatest downfall is that he was careless and unfocused and a little selfish#he cared about what was *fun.* and when reality hit him that he might be acting bad he wanted nothing more than to be reassured#that he wasnt. he might have come to that conclusion on his own but raph and leo definitely made it worse#god damn donnie trying to be reassuring and considerate actually fucked him up so bad with mikey that's messed up :(#mikey didnt think donnie was capable of fighting back and that's why he turned so quickly when he actually did. Yikes#because like if he wasn't fighting back then surely it wasnt THAT bad... it was just play....

I have not been in this fandom long enough to reasonably judge others' takes however. "EPIC fans are so silly to characterize odysseus as feeling guilty for his actions don't you know he's a war criminal" is definitely a wild one. like first of all to each their own so settle down and let people enjoy things ok. and secondly making choices with a bad outcome, even knowingly and deliberately, does not exclude the possibility of feeling bad about it later. in fact it makes for a much more in depth character because then you get to explore what he does or doesn't feel guilt over, and why, and if that guilt ever edges into regret or not.
#and thirdly i actually find it fascinating the way EPIC had him take a very conscious role in the greying of his morality#it's interesting to me because from my point of view odysseus in the odyssey is almost a passive player in his own myth#and i enjoy taking that very active moral choice and applying it to some of his non EPIC actions#odysseus#epic the musical#uh what is the tag for the epic cycle#as far as I'm aware it's#tagamemnon#?#idk i just think that if you were to ask your character what they would do differently the answer should not be ''nothing lol''#that is either a character who needs wayy more development or a storyteller who needs wayy more practice#also. WAR CRIMES DIDN'T FUCKING EXIST IT WAS THE BRONZE AGE#regardless of how socially acceptable or not his actions may have been#none of those men on the plain of fucking troy was about to sit down and agree on what constituted a crime of war#like if achilles can get away with flaunting straight up deliberate corpse desecration#i don't think anyone gets to say a word against odysseus for being a sneaky underhanded bastard who doesn't fight fair#coming back an hour later to add yet another point. the point of the people with this take is ''haha dont you know hes a bad person''#which fine yes by modern moral standards he is and even by contemporary standards* some of the stuff he does is super yikes man#but that STILL does not preclude him from feeling guilt. 'bad people' can feel guilt#gonna go ahead and explain those quotes around 'bad person' btw um i do not believe in morality like that. no one is fully good or bad#i shant speak on THAT further unless someone asks though#*contemporary is an iffy word here i feel because the default is to call the time of the penning of the text contemporary#despite the events in the text taking place several centuries earlier.#in this particular case because i am speaking from a point of textual analysis i will use the former#however i think that the latter is also a useful reference point

See, regardless the intention with the new Nosferatu what I see over and over especially on Twitter with -no joke- over 400,000 likes are posts about how all this happened because Thomas was way too invested in getting a promoyion instead of staying home and fucking his wife
I mean, it's hard to have sex with your wife if you don't have a home. just saying.
Really, though, the victim blaming going on with these takes makes me so frustrated. Even IF we ignore that Orlok already knows Ellen and feels entitled to her, even IF we ignore that he is doggedly determined (now that she's married to someone else) to show up and reclaim her for good - Thomas. Had. No. Choice.
Not to rant at you, anon, just using your ask to go off on this narrative.
The thing is - Thomas is already in debt at the start. That it's to his friend doesn't matter to Thomas. Honestly it might make the debt seem even worse. He is indebted to Harding financially, he and Ellen are not off to the most secure start, he's already been away for a while due to the honeymoon - this actually is vitally important for them. He needs his job. He was already late - if he hadn't been so late or hadn't realized it, he likely would have stayed home longer. But he couldn't. Then when he's offered this big, lucrative deal, he can't refuse it. Knock commenting about 'if you close this sale, you're job is guaranteed' isn't just tempting him with success, it's also threatening him with failure.
What happens if Ellen relapses and they're destitute? What happens if Ellen is having her seizures again, the sleepwalking, the melancholy, what if it gets worse? Ellen of course is still in the sweet honeymoon phase and thinks that love will be enough to stave those things off because so far Thomas' mere presence and affection has worked. But the thing is, that high is going to come back down. It happens in even the most wholesome and genuine of relationships, and stress - especially financial stress - will not do them any favors. Will not do her and her mental health and her attempts to keep her bond with Orlok suppressed any good whatsoever. I mean, that's basically what is happening in the film. The more they struggle financially, the more desperate things get, the greater the fissures and cracks that form in their marriage, giving Orlok more opportunity to come in and use it against them. Which is quite literally what he does. Thomas staying home, refusing the job, etc., only changes the how and when.
Ellen doesn't quite get it because based on what we know of her background and her father, she's never struggled to make ends meet, she's struggled with wealth and status being used against her. Of course she comes at this from the angle of 'being in a wealthy household didn't protect me', which Thomas can't understand. Neither can Ellen understand Thomas' perspective of being in debt to someone, worrying about failing to provide. I don't think it's simply that Thomas wants to make Ellen comfortable and have a life like she used to - he quite literally is worried that he cannot provide for her at all, especially if she gets sick (mentally or physically).
Like, Thomas in the 2024 movie isn't solely and completely driven by financial success - if you contrast him in the film with how Eggers originally wrote him in the 2016 script or how he's portrayed in the 2023 remake, this Thomas comes across to be more of the mindset that 'having financial success and being of similar standing to Ellen and Friedrich will make everything fine and I will be good enough to deserve her love and his friendship.' The driving factors are really that Thomas a) wants everything to be will for him and Ellen and b) wants to live up to the rigid societal standards of his gender. He's insecure, and he's overcompensating. Which isn't great but is a relatively normal character flaw, and certainly isn't one that is so inherently damning. His love and concern for Ellen still factor into things. He's not turning into a money-obsessed, toxic masculinity-minded asshole or something of the sort. That's why as soon as he's no longer naive to this darkness in the world - the things that Ellen has known of all along - his motivation shifts entirely to protecting Ellen. He understands now that unfortunately, in this rigged, supernatural game they're all trapped in, money means nothing. Money can't save Harding and his family, it certainly won't save Thomas and Ellen. But even IF he had known that all along - it wouldn't have made a difference.
Thomas and Ellen still need to live, Thomas would have to leave for work, and would have to take that job that sends him over to Transylvania. And if somehow they could circumvent that? Orlok still would find a way to separate them. Orlok would still come to Wisburg. Thomas is not the hero in this story, he's the damsel in distress, and unfortunately for him, while he gets to make it out alive, the actual hero who saves the day does not. Thomas loses his wife, but that is not his fault. It's not his fault he got assaulted, traumatized, left for dead, and it's not his fault he couldn't save Ellen. It's not his fault she died.
Ellen was doomed long before she met him, and that wasn't her fault, either.
anyway, all this to say - I'm glad I'm not on twitter. I'm glad I can block people with these takes.
#theirwolf replies#anonymous#anyway sorry anon if this seemed like I was going off on you I was not#I just needed to get some things off my chest#I was ranting with you not at you#considering the people I already have blocked I am more than likely just preaching to the choir but#guess I needed to preach#Thomas Hutter consistently fails at living up to the ideals of his gender and that is why he is precious#he also never takes this out on Ellen; yes he is dismissive early on but not unkindly#his comment about the doctors even indicates imo that he's saying this for her benefit as much as his#he is trying to help her avoid behaviors that could make things worse#it isn't his fault that mental health at the time sucked horrendously and was vastly misunderstood#and 2024 was a lot kinder and more nuanced - in the 2016 version Ellen actually DOES blame Thomas for things#(partially because Ellen herself never summoned Orlok somehow Orlok found out about her on his own)#this is something Eggers removed thankfully#idk like heaven forbid he want to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table and maybe make something of himself#it's like ladykatibeth said on the subject - very 'stay in your place' victim-blamey classism#which is just YIKES imo#it's one thing to not like him or think he was a bad husband or boring or whatever#it's the victim-blaming that makes me so angry#it's ignoring what is literally in the canon text#Ellen summoned him and Thomas went on that trip and neither of them are at fault for the CENTURIES OLD UNDEAD NOBLEMAN'S ACTIONS#Thomas Hutter#Nosferatu 2024

day 13 of @hprecfest — a rare pair | previous recs
trine by toyourdetriment / @yiiiiiiiikes25 (teddy/draco/harry, E, 9.1k)
Teddy throws a match.
a great deal of horniness tinged with despair in various combinations. see also:
Harry’s in the fucking room with them, reverently watching Draco’s cock reshape his godson.
— incidentally an excellent & succinct summary of much of what happens. look,
i didn't even go here.
i would, however, follow @yiiiiiiiikes25 anywhere.
(2) has held me in excellent stead thus far; i do, in fact, go here now.
yikes' work consistently squeezes my arteries narrower (chest pain, breathlessness, palpitations et cetera) & trine is an erotic forcefield. their grip of voice is unmatched, brought about through some of the most nuanced characterisations i've seen; it produces my favourite kind of filth— thick, rich, specific. each permutation of this triad drips with its own crisis, its categorical thrust of desire, particularities of madness. draco's unrepentant, clawing want; teddy's sullen, grinding need; harry's moral hangups sublimating into animal urgency— i needed a drink and then several cigarettes about it.
trine is a masterclass in tension & climax, its style emulates stimulation/brink/explosion in a way that made me want to dissect it for craft. go for the porn, stay to salivate about draco calling teddy "edward" and return for the way yikes' writing is a cresting wave, for the blinking, startled exhilaration of reaching the shoreline & wanting to go again, again, again.
if you haven't read it yet, do yourself a favour today; if you have— well, do yourself a favour today! it's a recent work, but a timeless rec.
#tedrarry#tedrarry recs#rarepair#geets recs#geets does hprecfest#i should probably add a bionote atp that says yikes fan acc#the FORCE of their writing#thumbprinted onto my brain#also don't ask me what that banner is i don't know either#it was so hard to pick a thing for this bc it's so specifically cinematic#that idk how other imagery is meant to supplant what i imagine when i think of it
