I lowkey ship Jinu with Baby

In a very "this is the fanservice ship" way. Bc I think something the movie failed to portray is the shippings happening within the groups (Huntr/x too, but polytrix is very healing to see tbh lol)

And maybe I'm just biased bc I love Baby and Jinu, and I think Abby x Baby is kinda... Meh. Or maybe it is the fact that my first mlm ship in general and in kpop was "main vocalist who's a little flirty but absolutely weak in the knees when it comes to the not-so-innocent maknae" vs "maknae who feigns innocence but absolutely isn't and uses their cutesy looks to terrorize people"

Yugi muto a lucky sonuvabitch for having the unique gift of never having the problem of saying or seeing something unbelievably funny and having no one else acknowledge it. Yami is always there laughing with him.

But also cowabummer thinking on cause, Yugi definitely, as an adult, would instinctively say something under his breath and be met with silence because Yami, his partner, isn't there anymore like Yugi definitely feels Yamis absence all the time but those little moments

When laughter just isn't there anymore? Maybe that's when Yugi feels it the hardest.

This has probably already been said but I wanted to write my two cents on the matter.

While I'm fine with the depiction of Atem being a smooth-talker and a flirt there's something about him being awkward/shy about romance that I enjoy more. Canon already implies Atem is romantically clueless but I like to take it a step further.

This guy is so confident and level-headed but when it comes to being romantic, he's shy. The idea of Atem, who is very confident in most situations, being romantically shy makes him endearing imo. Like you hold this man's hand and he's gonna think about it for weeks.

Firm believer that he uses more "old fashioned" ways to refer to his s/o as. I mean come on dude is from the ancient world. So no calling his s/o "babe" in this house. Shudders. No, he definitely calls his s/o "my love" and "my dear" and "darling/my darling."

And because my guy is touched-starved this dude's a cuddler. Doesn't matter who the big spoon/little spoon is as long as he's engaged in physical contact with his lover. In a moment of boldness he might even pull them down on his lap just to have them close. Cuddling on the couch while watching movies. Falling asleep while his head is on his s/o's lap as they card their fingers through his hair.

But yeah I believe in romantically shy Atem supremacy.

Hey, so for anyone who grew up with or just watched the 4kids Yugioh dub, do you remember that time in Duelist Kingdom when Yugi dueled the supposed ghost of the supposedly dead Kaiba? You know, that episode with all the talk of the practically phantasmal probability of Yugi’s victory?

And then when ‘Kaiba’ unmasked himself as this creepy clown looking guy, you know he revealed that he was essentially the personification/manifestation of the darkness of Kaiba’s soul that Yugi banished to the Shadow Realm with a mind crush at the end of their duel in the first episode. Only to have been freed from the Shadow Realm by Pegasus and sent to defeat Yugi?

Thus actually making this guy a genuine shadow/evil-counterpart to Kaiba that Yugi has to defeat in a twisted repeat of their first duel, and Yugi effectively cleaning up unfinished business when he defeats this shadow doppelganger of Kaiba and banishes him permanently this time.

As well as presenting a pretty good example and exploration of the strange, occult mysticism at work in this setting and the kind of power that both Pegasus and Yugi possess through their Millennium Items. It turns out that Yugi really did banish this dark piece of Kaiba’s very soul to this mysterious ‘Shadow Realm’, and that Pegasus was able to actually retrieve this piece of Kaiba’s soul, give it a body and make it his minion. And that Yugi is powerful enough to then PERMANANTLY banish this specter back to the shadows, never to be free again. Or, depending on your interpretation of the wording, Yugi’s mind crush may have just outright DESTROYED this piece of Kaiba’s soul for good.

An act which is certainly reinforced by the following ultimatum Yugi delivers to Pegasus, a statement delivered magically/telepathically over the video-screen that Pegasus is watching, something that even echoes what PEGASUS did to Yugi in their first duel, with Yugi wreathed in an aura of mystical power that ends with Yugi shattering the glass in Pegasus’s hand.

So that’s the dub version…

…And then you find out that in the original Japanese dub, the Kaiba doppelganger was… just a random evil, creepy clown working for Pegasus who was really good at disguising and impersonating people and decided to pretend to be a dead Kaiba to mess with Yugi.

For some reason.

As sacrilegious as it may sound, I feel pretty comfortable in saying that the English dub did actually make a few GOOD changes.

And yes, I know that in the manga, it was a ventriloquist with a Kaiba dummy who claimed that Kaiba's soul was in the dummy but was really just bullshitting. Which frankly I consider only MARGINALLY better than 'random evil clown disguised as Kaiba', simply because we get to see Yami go all Season-Zero on him with a sick penalty game.

Do you guys ever think about how much of a contradictory character Jamil is?

Like I don't have the energy rn to write a full essay with proof and all about it but?? The way we're told that Jamil is the kinda person to use someone else for the dirty work but when we look at his actions Jamil actually does a lot of the hard work himself and, specially when it comes to Kalim, refuses to take shortcuts for some goddamn reason???

Shipping aside, am I really supposed to believe Jamil when he says he hates Kalim when:

There's a voice line where Jamil says he actually isn't into cooking but does it for Kalim out of convenience, and yet explains (in his school uniform vignette I think?) that it's probably safe for Kalim to eat food from the cafeteria, which makes sense!!! After all, what kinda idiot would poison the whole school (full of elite students btw) just to get to Kalim?? And yet, Jamil still insists on cooking 3 meals a day every day for him...

Jamil does his hair with magic so he doesn't have to waste time on it, but does Kalim's headpiece and makeup by hand every morning (I know that kind of magic is hard and takes a lot of practice but hear me out, he had at least 5-10 years to practice on Kalim)

At the start of the Glorious Masquerade event, Jamil, despite quite literally having a mental breakdown over how much he doesn't want to take care of Kalim or be around him in book 4, seems very anxious and worried about leaving Kalim... FOR 3 FUCKING DAYS

Also how he thinks he's really good at masking his feelings and true intentions and yet Kalim is waaay better at him at masking. Like no one in-game nor most of the fandom ever seems to realize Kalim often masks his negative feelings with a positive and (intentionally) naive attitude. But when it comes to Jamil? Leona, Azul, Vil, Floyd and whoever else, all of them looked right through Jamil's act and some of them even said/implied Jamil is easy to read...

So yeah, Jamil often lies... mostly to himself

Stop me if I sound fucking insane but

I interpret Blind and Puzzle really differently. Like Yami (s0 especially because I'm really biased for bastards) x Yugi is to me super different to Atem x Yugi like night and day kind of difference.

Yami, if he had his own body, would be kinda a huge dick. Not maliciously but he definitely has resting bitch face syndrome and would not mask in the slightest. If you're boring him, he's going to tell you that you're boring to your face. Yugi would be the only person he goes out of his way to treat openly nice towards while with the rest of the yugang he's a lot more subtle. Not a 'he's actually secretly the biggest sweetheart' way, but if they asked him for help, Yami would help. He would remember the little details about them and act on it without expecting anything back because they're Yugi's friends and to be with Yugi means accepting all parts of Yugi (friends included). He's can be mean, emotionally distant to everyone and way too blunt at points- but he's also kind in a quiet way. He listens and put details to memory. He's honest and if he says something, Yami means it genuinely. Yugi in this kinda relationship would be a lot more proactive, the one to initiate dates and intimate moments. The guy to talk the entire time they're eating out while Yami just stares at Yugi. To others it seems really unbalanced and probably toxic, but Yami loves listening to Yugi and remembers every word he says. Yami isn't that adventurous of a person so if he planned every date, they would just be home playing games together so Yugi voluntarily plans the dates for them. Yugi loves affection, practically NEEDS it but Yami could live without it so Yugi initiates it as much as he wants and Yami always happily reciprocates. Their relationship is complex, weird and very nonconforming but it's what works for them.

BUT THEN ON THE OTHER HAND? Blindshipping?? Complete opposite.

If Yami cared too little, Atem cared too much. The dude suffering from Golden Child syndrome, had so much shit to deal with up until the end that he would be constantly be masking. Always going out of his way to appease and help those around him, making sure everyone is happy. Atem would genuinely love Yugis friends and try hard to be a part of the group, he would try hard to be a part of every part of Yugis life because he would feel like he constantly has to earn it because Yugi is just that wonderful of a person to him (obviously, Yugi tries to tell him that Atem is perfect the way he is). Atem does everything with his whole pharaoussy, half-assed doesn't exist in his vocabulary. He's the one to plan the dates down to the minute, he's the one that initiates most of the kisses, hugs and intimacy, he's the one to compete with himself to top whatever he did the previous anniversary. This man is insane. Yugi with Atem is a lot more laid back and calm than he would be with Yami. Atem is all the energy so Yugi is the calm.

Yami is the type to look at Yugi and say "What a happy coincidence that I met you in this life time."

Atem is the type to say instead "We are soulmates, the Gods themselves couldn't design a more perfect pair than you and I."

Sooo… random little Yugioh thing that’s been bugging me for a little while:

I don’t think it’s appropriate for Yugi to be playing Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl or even most of Yami’s iconic monsters post-series and after Atem/Yami passed on.

I was looking at the recently-released ‘Shining Sarcophagus’ set, which is an archetype of cards based around the cards Yugi used in both his solo duel against Yami Bakura and of course the Ceremonial Duel against Atem at the end of the series. And for the most part, it’s actually pretty cool.

Like it’s got retrains of Silent Magician and Swordsman, Marshmallon, the Gadget Trio plus Stronghold the Moving Fortress, and Gandora the Dragon of Destruction, as well as a couple of magic cards referencing Card of Sanctity and Turn Jump.

And it’s all tied together by the titular new Shining Sarcophagus, which references Yugi’s use of Golden Sarcophagus in the Ceremonial Duel. And in particular how he used it to secure the win against Atem by negating his attempt to revive Slifer the Sky Dragon.

So for the most part, this set it pretty cool…

…except for the fact that it ALSO includes its own versions of Dark Magician and Summoned Skull, plus a new Dark Magician-focused version of Mirror Force.

And like, that doesn’t seem appropriate, you know?

Obviously it REALLY doesn’t work in the context of this set being meant to represent Yugi’s deck in the Ceremonial Duel against Atem. Since, you know, Yugi didn’t USE Dark Magician in that duel and was actually DUELING AGAINST THEM.

And looking more broadly, for example at Yugi’s post-series duels in Dark Side of Dimensions, I feel like Yugi playing Dark Magician and other similar monsters kinda does a disservice to his character. When you get down to it, Dark Magician and Dark Magician Girl are intrinsically tied to ATEM. As in, they are literally the present-day incarnations of two of Atem’s closest friends from their lives back in ancient Egypt.

So when we consider how the culmination of Yugi’s character arc in the series is him stepping OUT of Atem’s shadow and standing on his own, to the point that he is even able to ultimately DEFEAT Atem himself, it makes Yugi using Atem’s iconic monsters feel just a bit regressive don’t you think?

Like it makes Yugi using Dark Magician, Dark Magician Girl and Gaia the Fierce Knight in his DSOD duels feel more like fanservice at the expense of character-development.*

Though funny enough, with that said I do actually think Yugi’s use of Atem’s monsters in the movie can work… with ONE specific change.

For one, Yugi DOES still use a number of his Ceremonial Duel monsters in his duels against Aigami and Kaiba, like new versions of Marshmellon, the Gadget monsters, a new Moving Fortress and Gandora X.

And notably when Yugi first brings out Dark Magician against Kaiba, he gets beaten pretty early by Kaiba’s new Blue-Eyes Chaos MAX Dragon, and it is Yugi’s Gandora X that takes down Kaiba’s new superboss Deep-Eyes White Dragon.

Which brings us to the ONE change that I think would make the end of this duel so much better for Yugi’s character and just be REALLY cool narratively in general:

In the movie, after Gandora X and Deep-Eyes White Dragon destroy each other, Kaiba tries to revive his Deep-Eyes (with a Monster Reborn that Yugi gave him earlier), but Yugi is able to negate this and bring back Dark Magician who is able to finish Kaiba off for good, or at least is ABOUT to when the new and improved Super Ring-Possessed EVIL-Evil Yami-Aigami (or ‘Yamigami’ as I like to call him) shows up to crash the party.

BUT! What if INSTEAD of Dark Magician, Yugi was able to bring out Silent Magician to deal the final blow to Kaiba?

I mean, how fucking PERFECT would that be symbolically? For one, it would complete the parallels to the Ceremonial Duel, with Kaiba trying to revive a powerful dragon with Monster Reborn just like Atem, only for Yugi to negate it and finish him off with Silent Magician.

But more than that, it would be a positively BRILLIANT slap-in-the-face for Kaiba. Throughout the entire duel, Kaiba has done his best to be utterly dismissive of Yugi, viewing him as nothing but a roadblock between him and his REAL goal. Kaiba doesn’t want to duel Yugi, he WANTS to duel ATEM.

So how PERFECT would it be if Kaiba winds up facing defeat NOT at the hands of Atem’s iconic magician, but instead YUGI’s? Effectively FORCING Kaiba to recognize that it is NOT Atem who is about to defeat him, but YUGI.

I just think that would be REALLY cool XD

*Though I will freely admit that I love that the movie introduced a proper ‘Magician Girl’ archetype for DMG. I guess I just wish the movie could have introduced them without Yugi using them? Maybe by contriving a duel for Tea to be involved in where it’s revealed that SHE’S using Dark Magician Girl now along with the new Magician Girls? I think that would be fun XD
