The more I think about how the press and the majority of the public in general love to clutch their pearls and act so scandalised by Queen and specifically Freddie's “overindulgence in excess and hedonism” and how WiLd and DeCaDeNt their parties were, largely bc of the fact that
1) Freddie was gay and thus
2) lots of people in his social circle frequenting their parties were “social deviants” and “freaks” (as the press at the time loved to emphasise) aka queer people, in comparison to most other classic rock bands and
3) the serophobic narrative that Freddie “had it coming and drove himself to a painful death bc of his out-of-control homosexual promiscuity, drug use and partying”;
even though there has been no story suggesting anything shady or unethical or non-consensual as far as the band’s involved regarding these WiLd PaRTIeS, other than excess in terms of sex, drugs and alcohol
while other “straight” bands who did not have a gay lead singer or drag artists, cross dressers and queer people at their parties did far more decadent, degenerate things, like literal violent crimes and depraved acts that directly hurt actual vulnerable people, and managed to skate by unscathed with relatively less scrutiny and judgement from the press and the public,
the angrier and more disgusted I get.
