Yokaitober, Days 5-8
I know its the 16th and over halfway through the month, but I promise I have been (mostly) keeping up with Yokaitober. My issue is that building habits is hard, and I am definitely out of habit on posting to tumblr.
In the second series of yokai for the month, I covered a pretty wide variety of creatures, including the jubokko, a bloodthirsty tree that was actually created in the 20th century; Keizobo, one of five famous kitsune from Inaba; the yogen no tori, a helpful, pandemic-predicting raven that was "seen" only one time; and the hinoshu, a rock-like yokai the size of a germ who lives in people's spleens.
If you'd rather not wait for me to remember to post these yokai before seeing them, you can always sign up to follow me over on Patreon, where I post new yokai (almost) every day of October. Plus, if you pledge as little as $2/month, you can get access to some other great 5e homebrew, including new magic items, spells, and monsters, every single week.

Drifloon aren't a specific youkai, but some ghost in old Japanese stories resembled or were compared to balloons. Dunsparce is based on the tsuchinoko, a snake that has a fat body lol misdreavus are based on nukekubi a youkai that's head detaches from the body and floats around to apparently drink people's blood and cause mischief.

Some designs I've made in October based on YokaiTober2022 prompts! I haven't finished last week but I am still pretty fond of these concepts.
I kept Sacred for myself for one of my settings and I am planning to put all the others on OTA on my Toyhouse sooner or later.

A tragic fairy tale! From the #yokaitober list, it’s Tsuru Nyobo. The Crane Wife!
I haven’t seen this story get counted amongst yokai much but I have seen it in many collections of fairy tales from around the world. I’d like to think that she’s fairly well known because of that but then again, when people think of fairly tales they rarely seem to think of anything besides the Brothers Grimm.

Yokaitober, Days 1–4
Like many people, each October I participate in my own version of the Promptober trend. But instead of art, I spend the month creating new homebrew for D&D; a full 31 days worth of it. I try to change it up each year, and in 2022 I did Arcanatober, with 31 days of magic items, spells, and monsters themed around the major aracan of the taro deck. This year, I'm going all-in on monsters, with Yokaitober, a celebration of yokai from Japanese folklore and mythology.
Yoaki are something I've had an interest in for many, many years, and I thought it might be fun to put that knowledge to use, as well as give myself an excuse to research even more of them. So while I'm making a post every day over on Patreon, every 3 or 4 days I'll gather the results and post an update here, free for everyone to read and use in their own 5e adventures at home.
The first four days, I wrote about the hahikigami, a living broom made from a tool for cleaning shrines; the amabiko, a three-legged monkey creature who likes to give medical advice; the hanzaki, a real-life giant salamander who just happens to have a yokai counterpart; and the mikoshi nyudo, a priest who's infinitely growing neck is designed to make you just dizzy enough that it can try to eat yours.

it’s yokaitober! i knew i wouldn’t be able to commit to a drawing every day so i’ve done one per week!
this week, we have a bake-danuki, a nekomata, and a daitengu! to be honest, this is starting to sound like one of those “walks into a bar” jokes....
