April 4, China:
These are foods from a popular fast food (yes, this is Chinese fast food) chain in China called Yonghe King/永和大王:
Wonton soup meal (with sides; bottom is a cup of their signature soymilk) (my relatives were in the picture so that's why the top is covered up):

experiencing other people's patience and poignancy that make them look like a well tempered synthesizer in that moment of observation is so humbling but i cant help feeling heavy and sad when i see it. i wish i could just appreciate it for what it is and move on with my day but i don't know, i find something sad in everything i see that is not traditionally breakneck speed, if i am not unearthing revelations and disrupting myself with them every day what am i doing with my life then.. so i turn to people who cook, i love when people cook and more than anything i love watching them cook and take their time. there was a video i watched recently of people burning incense at the yonghe temple, there were people who left rather quickly but some were there watching it burn kind of like a public devotion and i wish i was there with them, i would watch too. people who fish, all the old men that i see on my walks at 7 am when there is no one outside preparing their equipment, getting comfortable to sit by the river. i turn to so many different people almost in awe, i feel their calming presence and i get so sad, i am already so low but this really rips me to shreds. truthfully as much as i want to crash i am also very angry with feeling this way because i got a taste of the other side, why drive yourself to collision when you could be doing anything else like i desperately wish for certain things to go slower

"Three Pavilions Prelude"/"兰亭集序"
Genre: Calligraphy, Poetry
Author: Wang Xizhi
Details:
In Zayne's "Moonlit Dream" memory story, a book merchant is overheard advertising two texts he has for sale. The second text mentioned is called "Three Pavilions Prelude" in the English version of the game (left). But in the Chinese version (right), it is shown as "兰亭集序"("Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion Gathering").
Tumblr media
"兰亭集序"("Preface to the Poems Collected from the Orchid Pavilion Gathering") (left) is a famous calligraphy piece by Wang Xizhi (right). Wang was a politician and writer from the Jin Dynasty who is often regarded as the greatest calligrapher in Chinese history. This particular piece was written by Wang at the end of the Spring Purification Ceremony in 353 CE. At the end of the day, twenty-six literati composed a total of thirty-seven poems. "兰亭集序" was then composed by Wang on the spot and served as a preface to this collection of poems. I've included the Chinese transcription as well as an English translation at the end of this post.

Transcription and Translation:
English:
"In the ninth year of Yonghe, at the onset of late spring, we have gathered at the Orchid Pavilion in the North of Kuaiji Mountain for the purification ritual. All the literati, the young and the aged, have congregated.
This location has high mountains and steep hills, dense woods, and tall bamboo, as well as a clear, limpid stream reflecting the surroundings. We sit by a redirected stream, allowing the wine goblets to float beside us on its winding course. Although without the accompaniment of music, the wine and poem reciting are sufficient for us to exchange our feelings.
On this day, the sky is clear, the air is fresh, and a gentle breeze is blowing. Looking up, we admire the vastness of the universe; looking down, we see the myriad works of poetry. Letting the gaze wander and the mind roam, one can fully enjoy the pleasures of sight and sound, truly a delight. People's interactions with each other quickly pass through a lifetime.
Some would share their ambitions in a chamber; others may freely indulge in diverse interests and pursuits. The choices are plenty and our temperaments vary. We enjoy the momentary satisfaction of pleasures that regale us, yet we hardly realize how swiftly we age. As desires fade and circumstances change, grief arises.
What previously gratified us will soon be a relic, we cannot help but mourn. Whether life is long or short, there is always an end. As the ancients said, "Death and birth are momentous." How agonizing!
Reading the past compositions reveals a consistent melancholy from the ancients. One may find themselves lamenting in response to their words, unable to articulate their feelings. It is absurd to equate life with death, and it is equally foolish to think that longevity is the same as the short-lived. The future generations will look upon us, just like we look upon our past. How sad!
Hence, we record the people presented here today and their works; Even though time and circumstances will be different, the feelings expressed will remain unchanged. Future readers shall find the same empathy through this collection of poems."

Jiang Wei led a whopping amount of ELEVEN expeditions against Wei after Zhuge Liang's death. A lot of these expeditions were defeated and pushed back by Wei military officer Guo Huai, who once served under Sima Yi during his war against Zhuge Liang.
Jiang Wei's troops sustained heavy casualties and suffered defeat at Shanggui County while fighting against Wei military general Deng Ai during the ninth northern expedition, which made many people in Shu dislike him for his warmongering against Wei and draining his country's resources just for his own personal goals of uniting the land under Han and not the for the actual good of Shu, which suffered from the numerous campaigns.
He had quite the confusing relationship with Zhong Hui, a Wei military general who admires Jiang Wei but also fought against him during his northern expeditions. Zhong Hui treated him well after he surrendered to Wei (under Sima Zhao), travelling in the same carriage and eating at the same table.
Jiang Wei sensed that Zhong Hui had the intention of rebelling against Wei and sought to exploit this opportunity to stage an uprising and restore Shu. He told Zhong Hui:
"I heard that you have been very detailed and comprehensive in your planning since you got involved in Huainan. You have never miscalculated before. It was because of your help that Sima Zhao became the Duke of Jin and gained control over the Wei government. Now that you have vanquished Shu, your fame spreads throughout the Empire and the people sing praises of you. Wouldn't Sima Zhao feel worried that your glory will outshine his? Are you willing to live in seclusion for the rest of your life to avoid bringing disaster upon yourself? In the past, Han Xin didn't betray the Han dynasty but the emperor still doubted his loyalty. Wen Zhong didn't heed Fan Li's advice to retire and ended up being forced to commit suicide. Were they muddleheaded rulers and foolish subjects? They weren't. They were forced to do what they had to because of power politics. Now that you have made a great achievement and earned everlasting fame, why don't you follow in the footsteps of Fan Li and go into retirement to save yourself? You can then tour the peak of Mount Emei or travel around the world like Chisongzi."
Zhong Hui replied: "What you just said is so far-off. I can't do this. Besides, given my current situation, there isn't a need for me to do this."
Jiang Wei then said:
"I only suggested that you go into retirement. I am sure that given your intelligence, you can think of other options and carry them out. You don't need an old man (around 61 at the time) like me to get longwinded on this."
They became even closer friends after this.
Jiang Wei finally managed to instigate Zhong Hui to start a rebellion against Wei and the duke of Jin, Sima Zhao. Some of Zhong Hui officers did not comply with the rebellion and led a mutiny, killing both Zhong Hui and Jiang Wei, as well as Jiang Wei's wife and child(ren)
According to Jin dynasty historian Sun Sheng:
"During the early Yonghe era, when I accompanied General Huan Wen on a campaign against the Cheng Han state, I spoke to many Shu locals about Jiang Wei. They told me: 'After Jiang Wei surrendered, he wrote a secret letter to Liu Shan saying that he was going to pretend to serve under Zhong Hui and wait for an opportunity to assassinate him and restore Shu. I hope that Your Majesty can temporarily endure humiliation over the next few days. I am planning to overturn the situation and restore our state in the same way the Sun and Moon transition from darkness to brightness."

CENTRAL HALLS
➺ HALL OF SUPREME HARMONY (TAIHE DIAN; 太和殿, TÀIHÉDIÀN)Think of this as the “stage of ultimate power”—the largest and most important building in the Forbidden City. It was where emperors hosted grand ceremonies like enthronements, royal weddings, and state celebrations. Its golden throne and dragon carvings radiated authority, reminding everyone of the emperor’s divine rule.
➺ HALL OF CENTRAL HARMONY (ZHONGHE DIAN; 中和殿 ZHŌNGHÉDIÀN)This smaller hall acted as the “emperor’s green room”—a place for the emperor to prepare and rehearse before major ceremonies. It gave him a quiet space to rest, finalize rituals, and mentally prepare to face the grandeur of the court.
➺ HALL OF PRESERVING HARMONY (BAOHE DIAN; 保和殿 BǍOHÉDIÀN)Known as the “hall of final tests,” this space was where imperial banquets were held and the top-ranking scholars competed in the last stage of the civil service exams. It symbolized the bridge between talent and power, as successful candidates earned coveted roles in the empire.
RESIDENCES OF THE EMPEROR AND EMPRESS
➺ PALACE OF HEAVENLY PURITY (QIANQING GONG; 乾清宫 QIÁNQĪNGGŌNG) – The Emperor’s ResidenceImagine this as the “emperor’s headquarters.” Early in the Qing Dynasty, this was the emperor’s living space, but later it became a formal area for state affairs and meetings. Its ornate design reflected the emperor’s central role in ruling the empire.
➺ HALL OF UNION AND PEACE (JIAOTAI DIAN; 交泰殿 JIĀOTÀIDIÀN)Acting as a “symbol of balance,” this hall linked the emperor’s and empress’s residences, representing harmony between yin and yang. It also housed the imperial seals, tools of state authority, symbolizing unity in governance.
➺ PALACE OF EARTHLY TRANQUILITY (KUNNING GONG; 坤宁宫 KŪNNÍNGGŌNG) – The Empress’s ResidenceKnown as the “empress’s haven,” this palace served as the residence for the empress and a site for significant ceremonies like imperial weddings. Its name reflects her role in maintaining harmony and fertility within the imperial household.➺ IMPERIAL GARDEN (御花园 YÙHUĀYUÁN)This lush garden was the “royal family’s retreat.” Pavilions, rockeries, and ancient trees offered the emperor, empress, and consorts a serene escape from court life. It showcased traditional Chinese landscaping, blending art and nature into perfect harmony.
SIX WESTERN PALACES (西六宫, XĪLIÙGŌNG)
➺ PALACE OF ETERNAL LONGEVITY (YONGSHOU GONG; 永寿宫 YǑNGSHÒUGŌNG): This palace housed senior concubines or favored women, such as Imperial Noble Consorts or high-ranking Consorts. It is known for its richly decorated interiors, symbolizing the high rank of its inhabitants and reflecting the emperor’s wish for a long and prosperous life.
➺ PALACE OF ETERNAL SPRING (CHANGCHUN GONG;长春宫 CHÁNGCHŪNGŌNG): Home to Imperial Noble Consorts or highly ranked Noble Consorts, this palace is distinguished by its elegant and understated design, symbolizing longevity and prosperity. It represented the emperor’s favor and the well-being of the imperial family.
➺ PALACE OF GATHERING ELEGANCE (CHUXIU GONG;储秀宫 CHǓXIÙGŌNG): Once the residence of Empress Dowager Cixi, this palace is famous for its lavish decorations, including silk panels and intricate carvings. It was home to Imperial Noble Consorts and Noble Consorts, reflecting both opulence and historical significance.
➺ PALACE OF UNIVERSAL HAPPINESS (XIANFU GONG; 咸福宫 XIÁNFÚGŌNG): This tranquil residence was for Consorts and Imperial Concubines, offering serene gardens and a peaceful atmosphere. Its name symbolizes happiness and harmony within the imperial household, providing a retreat from the tensions of court life.
➺ PALACE OF MANIFEST BENEVOLENCE (YONGHE GONG; 咸福宫 XIÁNFÚGŌNG): A modestly decorated palace, it housed lower-ranking Concubines or Noble Consorts. It was less prominent than other western palaces but still offered a residence for women with less political influence in the imperial harem.➺ PALACE OF ETERNAL HARMONY (YONGHE GONG; 永和宫 YǑNGHÉGŌNG): Designed as a peaceful space for Concubines seeking quiet contemplation, this palace offered a retreat for reflection. It was a place for introspection and spiritual solace, away from the bustle of court politics.
SIX EASTERN PALACES (东六宫, DŌNGLIÙGŌNG)
➺ PALACE OF GREAT BENEVOLENCE (JINGREN GONG; 景仁宫 JǏNGRÉNGŌNG): This palace housed the Empress Dowager or other influential women in the court, such as the emperor’s mother or heirs. Its decorations, symbolizing benevolence and virtue, emphasized the maternal authority and moral influence of its residents. ➺ PALACE OF CELESTIAL FAVOR (CHENGQIAN GONG; 承乾宫 CHÉNGQIÁNGŌNG): Reserved for Imperial Noble Consorts, Consorts, or Imperial Concubines who had borne the emperor’s children, this palace is known for its ornate design, reflecting the high status of its residents and the emperor’s favor toward them. ➺ PALACE OF ETERNAL HARMONY (YONGHE GONG; 永和宫 YǑNGHÉGŌNG): Similar to its western counterpart, this palace housed Noble Consorts or Concubines with a quieter role in the court. Featuring serene gardens and courtyards, it offered a peaceful retreat for personal reflection. ➺ PALACE OF PROLONGING HAPPINESS (YANXI GONG;  延禧宫 YÁNXǏGŌNG): Known for its European Baroque architectural style, this palace was a residence for Concubines and Noble Consorts. It was partly rebuilt during the Qianlong Emperor’s reign but later fell into disrepair, symbolizing Qing openness to foreign influences. ➺ PALACE OF PURITY AND TRANQUILITY (SUQING GONG;肃清宫 SÙQĪNGGŌNG): This simple and serene palace was designed as a retreat for lower-ranking Concubines or Noble Ladies, offering them a quiet space for reflection and solitude, away from the complexity of court life. ➺ PALACE OF LASTING BLESSINGS (YONGSHOU GONG; 永寿宫 YǑNGSHÒUGŌNG): Reserved for lower-ranking Consorts, Concubines, or retired women, this palace symbolized the emperor’s wish for enduring prosperity and blessings. It provided a peaceful residence for women no longer involved in the active imperial harem.
➺ THE COLD PALACE (冷宫, LĚNGGŌNG) was not a specific, singular palace but rather a general term used to refer to places where disfavored imperial concubines, consorts, or court members were sent. These women were effectively confined, losing the emperor’s favor and their political or social standing. The Cold Palace was often located in remote or less-maintained parts of the Forbidden City, far from the central Inner Court and main residential areas.
There is historical evidence suggesting that parts of the Six Western Palaces or other unused, deteriorating buildings within the Forbidden City were sometimes repurposed as Cold Palaces. One of the more commonly referenced Cold Palace locations is the Palace of Prolonged Happiness (Yanxi Gong) after it fell into disrepair following a fire during the Qianlong Emperor’s reign.
These spaces were intentionally isolated, with simple or dilapidated conditions, reflecting the loss of favor of those confined there.

It hurt like a bitch!
The fall wasn't at all as dramatic as he dreamed of it being a few times but the panic that riddled his veins and heart when they took that leap of faith, hand in hand, was something that their pursuer couldn't take from them. The plummet of his gut in the air, the drop towards the rapids and a piss-poor aim landed Lance in a hellish underworld scream of pain. Bubbles of precious air lost with the agony of his leg clipping a sturdy rock at the lake bottoms wait. Lungs burned, vision blurred and his teeth clenched with a mouthful of water that didn't at all help with his strength slipping from his adrenaline overworked joints. As blood tainted the waters, his mind made some sense of the rapids pushing them down the stream.
The rush of air from his lungs returned with sputtering, a yank from his collar and arms around his torso had him at the surface, bleached in sunlight and welcomed the burn of heaving water once swallowed. It hurt, he was in so much fucking pain he could only bite at the hand that covered his mouth to try and not give away their position to eyes looking over the edges way above. Salt and tears mixed without restraint, shaking like a newborn as Darcy looked after them both down the flow but something else was at their back wasn't it? The noise was too rushed, too loud to be a simple drop, another bump - no no, this was another fall. Another long drop that was rapidly pulling them in.
"Fuck, fuck, I can't sw-swim, Darc! My leg!" He couldn't finish his sentence as a log or something knocked his limp under the surface reigniting the pain that made him choke again on his tongue. "uugk! Fuckfuckfuck!" As he reached out to grab onto anything, muddy bank and grass peeled in his fingernails but it was a scramble for the ages, he had to get out - he wouldn't survive another drop but just as he thought about it. Hands on his back pushed him forward as he reached for a sturdy looking ledge of grass and stone. "Darc, I got it!" Of course though, as he pulled himself forward, logging his good foot into the sandy bank that'd yet to turn to silt, he looked over his shoulder to watch Darcy be pulled away.
"DARCS!" Hand slipped but his fear of being swept away the same made him scramble back to the ledge, cutting his palms in the process and tearing more of his shirt with a shout over his shoulder. "Darc! Darc! No! You fucki---!!" Bubbles and foam, eyes stung and head under for a sharp few seconds. It woke him up, made him shiver and curse everything upon pulling himself to the surface once more to climb onto the shore. Wincing and clutching at his thigh of the broken limb that limply sat on the earth now.
Lashes blink and blink and blink but the tears never stopped down his features as he stared at the falls drop in disbelief. Of course, of course, of fucking course - they wouldn't have luck on their side. As he bent over his lap, he heaved vomit, water mostly from the fall but it was hot and it hurt with his hoarse sob. "Be alive, be fuckin' alive, I swear to god… I swear…" Clawing bloody prints across his over front, he clutched at his heart and wept himself into the darkness of exhaustion. Waking only to the bellows of the Ragtag's finally finding them a few hours later. Lance was delirious from the bloodloss at best, to Yonghwa it was a very bad sign.
Lance remembers being in and out of agony - his leg reset, wrapped and medication pushed into his arms and mouth. Everything felt hot and clammy one second, then he couldn't stop shivering the next. A tent overhang kept the elements off Lance but it was never easy to tell if it was rain that soaked his face or the ever-flowing tears as he prayed Darc's name like a mantra to all ears listening. Yonghwa was to suffer the worst of it though, the way Lance's body moved on autopilot to return to that lake side, to look for Darc and wait for him where he was left behind. The screeching of refusing to be moved, even daring to stab himself if Yonghwa even dared of taking him away from this plot of camp.
It was heated, stupidly so, but Yonghwa had to understand as they both stared into the fire that burned warmth into Lance's bones once his fever broke. "Give me two weeks… please." Yonghwa couldn't dismiss that, Lance wasn't going to lie and tell them to stay though, "You can lead the rest of them - take them to where he planned in the first place. I'll stay here… with some of the slower ones, those that are healing too. I'll … remain here and wait for him c-cause he'll be back for me." He promised, he always kept those no matter how long it took to make them happen.
Lance wouldn't be able to thank Yong' much more than he has already for keeping the spirits up. The gang was working hard to keep things normal, though Lance was a pillar for sure but he also wanted that selfish with his desires. He knew what a family could become if they had everything planned out but it was hard to do such a thing with so many people in their lives. To keep everyone happy was impossible, so it was much easier to split everyone, those that wanted a break to rest their legs and eat what meager food that had left and rationed from camps like behind. Those that wounds like his own, and some that offered protection and company to the less able. It was a plan that worked well, Lance though felt guilty for taking most of the medication even if he wasn't conscious for the majority of it.
It was crazy though - how fast the days went. As he laid out with his legs healing slowly but faster than most. The drugs they had were the real deal, though could of sold for a bunch of coin for them to get food but instead he was downing yet another douse as he felt pain flaring that last three hours. It was five days in when he finally was able to stand upright, crutches under his pits and his body able to finally have a bath that wasn't a bed sponge from one of the elder's here.
Now able to hobble around the camp, he was able to keep food down again, but he didn't linger around the place with them much. Lance always made his way to the edge, staring out at the stars that covered their heads whilst watching the lakes in the distance. He didn't know where Darcs was taken too but he knew, something in his heart, he knew he'll be on his way back. As he sat with a wobble and inhaled deep to keep his tears at bay, he swiped at his face several times before returning for the night. He couldn't say he smiled or laughed with camp much but he sat with them at the main fire. Needing something to warm his sides up since he didn't have his best friend… his partner, doing it for him.
It was hard, the days fell faster and the stars moved on. His people were getting restless now they healed up faster and food was becoming less. Lance didn't stop them, standing amongst his own supplies to tell them to carry on, to follow the path Yonghwa laid out for them. Farewells and only three people were left including Lance as he did his best to get himself walking faster, his crutches were going to be an issue on this terrain but maybe if he can get his Pangu to work again, his spearback could help out tenfold too. Still, as he moved to take his bedding up again for the rest of the evening.
Coming to the 12th night, his hope for Darc's return wavered, he couldn't eat much at all that morning but he did whisper for the two people that stayed with him to help him pack the camp up. Slow, they were to put away blankets, tents and strings. Washing the last of their breakfast dishes where he was sat and able, Lance was feeling the weight of possibly losing his … fuck, it hurt. It hurt a lot. His chest was tight the more he thought about it. What if Darc didn't resurface? What if he got broken over rockbeds too? Fuck, he hated how tight his jaw got as he thought on it, his shoulders felt so heavy… his stomach cold and bones ached. His leg was the worse in these moments, as if the medication he took was barely touching it but he had to stretch his neck. Cursing under his breath yet again he rubbed at his lashes with his wrists, hands suddy with soap from cleaning hanging away from his tears…
"Fuck… please come back. Please." Darc wasn't allowed to leave him behind like this, to let him rot with the guilt, to make him starve for that one voice to call his name… Lance! Just like these memories, the echoing voice in his head, it was so real, so close… Lance moved to place his hands on his knees, sniffling upon rubbing hands clean from the chemicals to be able to wipe at his face. Lance! It made his shoulders jump, looking up from his palms and turning his gaze to their helpers, Lance noticed that they too were looking around them. So… wait, wAIT.
Lance turned around, the ping of pain ignored as he knocked his leg into the bowl spilling it over but he found his heart in his throat. His lashes wide and his features gaunt from his lack of food and good mental health but it was like seeing the sun. The horizon was cut, broken over with the figure of what his heart desired the most. How his soul felt like it was ignited with a firework. "D…Darcs?" As he felt his blood rush to his ears, the sound of the world become nothing to him. Instead, he grabbed at his crutch knocking it over only to follow it without a care. Scrambling to his feet, rock seat used in aid, "Darc! DARC!" Hobbling, he winced at the pain in his leg but he couldn't careless, not as he dragged himself to the edge of the camp, to meet up with the idiot that sacrificed himself in that dumb ass moment.
You couldn't make Lance make sense of his emotions at that point, in fact he didn't know who held onto who first. The sensation of two bodies colliding, his frame being lifted no doubt and he didn't bother hold onto his crutch to instead wrap around Darc's head and shoulders with tears pouring from his exhausted eyes. "Alive… you're alive, I knew it, I fuckin' knew it…" He near screamed his relief as he clutched at hair and clothing, as he pressed his face into their shoulder and neck, sobbing more and more with the release of everything he held deep in his darkness. "Aah… aaaah… you fuc-fucker… never, never again!" Snot, tears and sweat, he didn't care everything he was able to smear on this idiot, Lance did.
"Never again, never again." A mantra this time to be printed into the flesh of his companion along with everything left unsaid. Well, it was when Lance's hands grasped at the bastards face and their lips collide with roughness that could of split lips if teeth clicked with the emotional need to say everything left in his mind about this idiot in his heart... I waited, I waited for you and only you.

Account of the Di (WS101)
[I.e. the kingdom of Chouchi. This post covers down to the ascension of Yang Baozong in 429]
The Di are a separate kind of the Western Yi, titled the Baima. At the juncture of the Three Eras, perhaps Bai was a lord or chief, but in that period there was a single court audience. For that reason the Poetry claims:
Since those Di and Qiang, do not dare not to come to the King.
From Qin, Han and onwards, for generation they lived in Qi, Long and southwards, and Hanchuan and westwards, and established themselves as prominent leaders.
In the middle of Han's Jian'an [196 – 220] there was Yang Teng, he was a great leader of the section's family groups. Teng was brave, strong and with many plans and schemes. He was the first to move to Chouchi. Chouchi has an area of a hundred [bai] qing, because of that he used it as a title. [All] four sides are steep and sheer, and are 7 li tall. The road coils like goat intestines for thirty-six rotations. On its top is the source of the Feng river. They cook the earth to achieve salt.
After Teng there was someone named Qianwan. Wei designated him as King of the Baiqing Di. Qianwan's grandson was named Feilong. He gradually grew strong and flourishing, Emperor Wu of Jin made use of him as General who Pacifies the West.
He had no sons, and reared his sister's son Linghu Maosou as his son. Middle of Emperor Hui's Yuankang era [291 – 299], Maosou titled himself General who Supports the State and Worthy King of the Right, the crowd of Di pushed him forward as ruler. Many of the gentlemen Within the Passes who drifted and moved about relied on him. Emperor Min used him as General of Agile Cavalry and Worthy King of Left.
Maosou died, and his son Nandi controlled the position. He and his younger brother Jiantou divided the entourage. Nandi titled himself Worthy King of the Left and stationed at Xiabian. Jiantou titled himself Worthy King of the Right, and stationed at Hechi.
Nandi died, his son Yi was installed. He titled himself Envoy Holding the Tally, Dragon Prancing General, Worthy King of the Left, and Duke of Duke of Xiabian. He used Jiantou's son Pan as Envoy Holding the Tally, General of the Best of the Army, Worthy King of the Right, and Duke of Hechi. He was subject to Jin, and Jin used Yi as General who Conquers the South.
3rd Year [of Xiankang, 337 AD, per Songshu], Yi's senior kinsman Chu assaulted and killed Yi, and also gained his multitudes. He installed himself as Duke of Chouchi and was subject to Shi Hu. Later he claimed to be vassal to Jin. 10th Year of Yonghe [354 AD], changed Chu to be Duke of Tianshui.
11th Year [355 AD], Yi's younger brother Songnu sent his aunt's son Liang Sanwang to take the opportunity of attending to straight away with blade in hand kill Chu. Chu's son Guo led left and right to excute Sanwang and Songnu, and then installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Huan Wen petitioned for Guo to be Inspector of Qin province, and for Guo's son An to be Grand Warden of Wudu.
12th Year [356 AD], Guo's junior uncle's son Jun killed Guo and installed himself. Guo's son An betrayed Fu Sheng, killed Jun, and then declared himself a vassal to Jin.
An died, his son Shi installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. Jin's 3rd Year of Taihe [368 AD], used Shi as Inspector of Qin province, and his younger brother Tong as Grand Warden of Wudu.
Shi died. Tong deposed Shi's son Zuan and installed himself. Tong was also named De. Zuan assembled a faction, assaulted and killed Tong, and installed himself as Duke of Chouchi. He dispatched envoys to go to Emperor Jianwen, who used Zuan as Inspector of Qin province. Jin's 1st Year of Xian'an [371 Ad], Fu Jian dispatched Yang An to invade Zuan. He overcame him, and moved his people to Within the Passes, and emptied the land of Baiqing.
At the death of Songnu, his two sons Fonu and Fogou escaped and ran to Fu Jian. Jian used [a daughter] as wife to Fonu's son Ding, and designated him as Master of Writing and [General who] Leads the Army. At the defeat of Fu Jian, Guanyou was disturbed and chaotic. Ding exhausted his strength for Jian. When Jian died, he led the multitudes to run to Longyou. He moved to govern Licheng, which is 120 li from Chouchi, and set up granaries and stores at Baiqing. He summoned the barbarians and the Xia, and obtained more than a thousand families. He declared himself Dragon Prancing General and Duke of Chouchi, and declared to be vassal to Jin. Xiaowu promptly used what he had titled himself to make use of him, and later used him as Inspector of Qin province. 4th Year of Dengguo [389 AD], he thereupon had the land of Qin province, and titled himself as King of Longxi. He was later killed by Qifu Qiangui. He had no sons.
Fogou's son Sheng first was overseeing the state, and defended Chouchi. He then controlled affairs, titled himself General who Conquers the West, Inspector of Qin province, and Duke of Chouchi, and conferred posthumous title on Ding as Martial [wu] King. He divided the various Di and Qiang to make twenty sections with Army-Protectors. Each he made a garrison posts, and he did not set up commanderies and counties. Thereupon he had the land of Hanzhong, but continued to declare to be vassal to Jin. Beginning of Tianxing [398 – 404], he dispatched envoys to court [i.e. the Wei court] with tribute. A decree used Sheng as Great General who Conquers the South and King of Chouchi. He was isolated and blocked off by Yao Xing, and did not mange to communicate annually with tribute and envoys. Sheng used his older brother's son Fu as General who Pacifies the South and Inspector of Liang# province, to defend Hanzhong. Middle of Liu Yu's Yongchu [420 – 422], ennobled Sheng as King of Wudu. Sheng died, his private posthumous title was Kind and Civil [huiwen] King. His son Xuan controlled the position.
Xuan, courtesy name Huangmei, was titled Great General who Conquers the West, Opening Office with Ceremony Similar to the Three Ministers, Inspector of Qin province, and King of Wudu. Though he was a declared vassal to Liu Yilong, he continued to defer to the symbol of Jin's Yongxi era. Later he started to use Yilong's Yuanjia calendar.
Earlier, Sheng spoke to Xuan, saying:
I am aged and already old, and will end as a subject of Jin. For you it is good to serve the Song emperor.
For that reason Xuan deferred to him.
Xuan was good at entertaining scholars, and was cherished by migrants and long-time [inhabitants]. 4th Year of Shiguang [427 AD], Shizu dispatched the Great Swan-geese Arranger, Gongsun Gui, to designate Xuan as Great General who Conquers the South, Chief Controller, Inspector of Liang# province, and King of Nanqin. Xuan sent up a petition to request to be aligned with inner vassals. Allowed it. Xuan died, his private posthumous title was Filial and Luminous [xiaozhao] King. His son Baozong controlled the position.

Happy (slightly early) New Year to everyone!
And also an update for my 2024 China series:
I was going to finish posting the pictures I took from the National Museum of China, however I didn't finish the Ancient China exhibition, because it was HUGE. I think basically the entire bottom floor of that museum was dedicated to this one exhibition, and we only saw less than half of it (going chronologically, we stopped and left right before the Tang dynasty section), since we had only one day planned for this museum. That was a huge mistake, and one of my two biggest regrets from the entire trip. Should have planned at least two days for this one museum.
BUT thankfully, the Ancient China exhibition is permanent! So I'm definitely going back there in spring-summer 2025 and I'm going to finally finish seeing that exhibition. I do have some pictures from the hasty visit this year, but since I am going to finish it next year, I think I will save the posts for that exhibition for next year. This means there will only be some pictures left for the porcelain exhibition (different from the Dehua porcelain exhibition, this one exhibits historical artifacts) and the ancient texts exhibition, those posts are in the works right now.
For my trip to Beijing next year, I'm also planning on visiting the Palace Museum/故宫博物院 again (aka Forbidden City/紫禁城). It's been 20 years since I last visited the Palace Museum, that was back when Palace Museum didn't have as much restoration work done or as many visitors. As a child, my biggest memory from that visit was the grass growing on the roof of the buildings.....that was strangely funny and sobering at the same time. It will be really exciting to see what has changed in this 600+ years old palace over the past 20 years.
A video of the seasonal scenery in the Palace Museum, by the Palace Museum's official channel (ugh I will be missing out on all the flowers!):

Besides National Museum of China and the Palace Museum, I am also planning on visiting other cultural and historical sites in Beijing like Prince Kung's Palace Museum/恭王府博物馆, Yonghe Temple/雍和宫, and Hongluo Temple/红螺寺. Maybe the Beijing Zoo/北京动物园 too (mostly to see the pandas lol). It's rather early so none of this is set in stone yet, but I'm definitely going to at least a handful of places.
See y'all next year (next week)!
