despite pages of poems and the entire book i wrote you - you only ever wrote me two songs. the first has the lyric coming up on 7.13, the date we first started really flirting. it's been three years from then, and my life has been utterly ruined. we haven't spoken in a month. i oscillate between being a wreck and being wildly, manically happy. i go long periods without thinking of you - and then i keep myself up, tortured by memories.

three weeks before you discarded me; you took me ring shopping. you would tell me so many times i was the love of your life, someone that you "couldn't live without."

the last thing you sent me was that second song - a new one, finally. it's about how i'll never get what i want. about how miserable the idea of a life with me is.

my mother was furious. i had to call her - i was sobbing on the floor of my bathroom about it. She knows it kills me that i can't have kids, i said, breathless, silver and shaking with anguish, Why would she make a fucking song about how sad that is.

you know her, and you know how gentle and forgiving she is. how rare her anger is. her response was slow, deliberate. sweetheart, she said, she can write any song she wants. i know my girl. you are going to write a book instead.

i hiccupped a laugh, but she was still talking. she dropped her voice low, almost scraping through the phone and onto the floor with me. it was a strange tone, almost like feeling a storm coming when there's nowhere safe to be.

i want you to rip her apart, she said. do you think you can you do that for me?

Oh boy, the Ao3 ship stats went up on Twitter today and ofc people are mad as fuck over the lack of F/F ships and every ship being "too white"

Am I crazy or do I remember the person who makes these ship stat charts being dragged last year for using faulty data and misrepresenting all the numbers? I mean I'm assuming it's the same person doing it because we have this discourse every single year. So how does anyone know if they're being honest or if they're just lying and misrepresenting everything again?

Yeah, the same person just came out with their summer stats, and it's the same terrible methodology as always. @5ummit is the person with the big debunking post.

Last January, someone else ran the same stats with reasonable methodology. I don't see a half-year update from them, but the January stats shouldn't be *too* different, and frankly, estimating what's popular this summer from what was actually popular last January is going to be far more accurate than estimating it from bizarro equations that have nothing to do with reality

The "too white" thing wouldn't be nearly as much of an issue if they'd stop flattening all the Asian media and erasing the cartoon characters' ethnicities. Or we'd be able to see what the issue actually is.

Same with F/F. Because the methodology is so nutso, it's impossible to tell from the bad stats how many F/F ships are in among the top 100 in the first half of this year.

But I can tell you that between January and the end of July of this year, 155,607 new F/F works were created. If we expand the search to include older works which were updated within that timeframe, there are 329,385 (this figure will shrink with time as ongoing works continue to be updated).

(arguably I should have pruned OFC/OFC, but I think leaving it in and pointing out that original work is the top fandom in this search is relevant. There's tons of F/F on AO3, it just might not be where you're looking for it)

Analysis of characters' ethnicity isn't nearly as easy. We could repeat the same process as above for the Character(s) of Color metatag, but these tags aren't actually used that often outside of headcanons and racebends. There's no need to tag the fact that Wyll Baldursgate is Black, everyone who recognises his name in their AO3 search results knows that already.

And then we have less clear cut ethnicities with all the cartoon characters, deliberately ambiguous characters, aliens and fantasy races, and characters played by PoC actors who look White to much of the audience.

Figuring all this out would take rigorous research of both canons and fannish interpretations, preferably by a team who can counter one another's biases. The slapdash assignment of ethnicity by one woman with an agenda who isn't personally familiar with every single canon in the list is, well, her guess is as good as mine, and I know mine's just a guess.
