So much reference. I have a folder full animals pictures ranging from full bodies to skeletons to close ups of random body parts like feet. And too much random practice. (see will redraw them 100 times to them right) I love drawing animal feeties. Their just so cute and fun.

It totally looked like final season animation to me, so I went looking for it and it’s this episode: [Season 5, Ep 220: The Final Jouney (The Final Test)]

This scene specifically:  Angrily, Kaiba grabs Yugi by the collar and lifts him up, saying he's not going to stand there and watch Yugi give a title shot to his imaginary friend. (Japanese Kaiba tells Yugi he can't beat the other Yugi.) Joey tells Kaiba to drop him, while Yugi says this is something he knows he needs to do. And deep down, Kaiba knows it, too. (Japanese Yugi says this is something he must do.)

I believe Atem has locked himself in his soul room to mentally prepare for the ceremonial duel, which is why he doesn’t take over here.

Ok, so, I thought about it and Ryou might be the obvious answer, but hear me out. The combination of Ryou AND Bakura as one person because while Seto Kaiba can finally comprehend that Yugi and Atem are two different people, Ryou is still an enigma and it wouldn't even cross his mind that Ryou is also two people.

So you have Ryou, this quiet, reserved, seemingly harmless guy who, when he duels, is suddenly edgy, twisted, and sadistic. So as the game starts to break, more and more of the Bakura side starts showing. I can't think of anyone (or 2 people in this case, haha) who'd be a better fit for Yuri.

OKAY I AM DIGGING THAT 'faulty duel AI' concept??? Like the whole reason ddlc 'works' is because dating sims only measure success based on narrow parameters of doing the 'right' actions in order to get a desired result. But card game simulators to an extent also only exist to be won-- and all AI opponents exist to ultimately lose to a player. If one or a few of them become aware of this and look for a 'real person to play with,' that would be so unsettling but also so intriguing

AI Atem that can never be like the real Atem because losing isn’t an option - the meta of the person winning, turning the sim off and AI Atem ceasing to exist, holding up a dark mirror to Atem’s defeat by Yugi to put his soul at rest.

AI Joey who is innately faulty due to Kaiba’s failure to understand how Joey could ever win if he’s so flawed, and Kaiba’s warring desire to make a good AI, but not a Joey that could ever beat him. AI Joey who learns the only way he can ever win is by luck and playing the RNG of his ‘Random Deck Mode’ to slowly learn what are the better cards and strategies against the opponent. The rift this creates between him and AI Atem, who knows the day will come that AI Joey is going to be the most difficult one to beat, and where does that leave him?

AI Yugi who was mostly finished, but abandoned while Kaiba was still working on the aesthetics, because he couldn’t pretend Yugi was in any way Atem any more. AI Yugi with the default dueling system, and the one you learn to play against, who greats you when you turn on the game, even though you’re kind of bored with it by now, and you’re not sure you can bother to lose another duel. AI Yugi who suddenly challenges you to a game of Ludo. Backgammon. Poker. Snakes and Ladders. Dungeon Dice Monsters. Scrabble. Cluedo. Chess. Risk. Just so you keep playing. Play whatever you want. But you do. have. to. play.

So you reblogging and making a lot of YuGiOh stuff got me interested (I never watched the show as a kid, and if I did it freaked me out and I'd turn it off really quickly) but I never knew that there was a spirit and there was a lot of ancient Egypt stuff??? I thought that Yami was just 'Game-Face Yugi' and there was a lot more depth than I initially thought.

Oh man, you’re in for a treat especially if you delve deeper than the (English/4Kids) dub. Because if you read the manga, you get the stuff that wasn’t included in the Duel Monsters Anime (but was animated in what we fans call “Season 0″) which was a lot darker and dealt with a variety of different games - not just card games. Also Yami killed people. That was A Thing. Season 0/ the manga in general is a LOT darker than the show. And the Japanese anime adaptation still left in some pretty dark things while others they were like “ehhhhn, you know what? Maybe the child shouldn’t skin his father. We’ll let him stab him, but we have to draw the line somewhere”

Takahashi mentions in an artist’s comment towards the end of the series that his original concept for the show was as a Horror series, and I still think “ARE YOU SURE YOU DIDN’T?!” whenever I see it.

Yugi and Atem (Yami) and their group of friends are all really interesting characters that go through some amazing character development throughout the series. It’s downplayed or written out in some cases of the english dub, but its still there in the Manga and the original Japanese. And When I say character development, I don’t mean it’s always positive, but it feels natural for the characters and they do tend to come to terms with said development not necessarily being a good thing.

And as for Yugi and Atem specifically, whether you interpret their relationship as platonic, friendly or romantic, they still have one of my favourite damn relationships ever written. It’s probably the most dynamic relationship in the series considering how much it changes from the first chapter to the last (and the last chapter STILL makes me cry, okay. I’m STILL not okay even 13 years later)

The Ancient Egyptian stuff is fun with some basis in historical stuff (because Kazuki Takahashi did a lot of research), but it is still a fantasy that takes a ton of liberties. Makes for a lot of beautiful art and interesting fanfic ideas, though!

And then there’s Yugioh Abridged, which, I think, even with only a cursory understanding of the franchise is still one of the funniest damn things ever made by a human being. And when you know the show/story, it’s even better.

The spin-off series are hit or miss with me. I haven’t seen them all, but some of them, like 5DS, are WAY BETTER THAN THEY HAVE ANY RIGHT TO BE. Someday when I have more time I would like to watch all of the series, but for now, I’ll just keep the original close to my heart.

This series is ridiculous, amazing, and I love it.

my friend and i have an incredibly stupid but good joke that if kaiba were ever kidnapped in a normal way - one that didn’t involve virtual worlds or whatever, and the kidnappers decided mokuba would be more willing to give in to their demands in exchange for getting his brother back - he would be a huge brat. he would be like caesar when he was kidnapped by pirates. the ransom is so low it’s an insult, they should be demanding MORE, and also he refuses to cooperate unless they get him a specific flavor of lacroix (one he invents on the spot) and turns them all against each other with a skillful combination of psychological warfare and pure bullshit. there’s a lot of fun authors out there who could pull off a goofy one-shot
