Badeshi: Only three people speak this 'extinct' language

Would you like to learn a few words of a language only three people in the world speak?

Badeshi used to be spoken widely in a remote snow-clad valley, deep in the mountains of northern Pakistan.

But it is now considered extinct.

Ethnologue, which lists all of the world's languages, says it has had no known speakers for three or more generations.

But in the Bishigram Valley, we found three old men who can still speak in Badeshi (you can hear them in the video at the link).

"A generation ago, Badeshi was spoken in the entire village", says Rahim Gul. He doesn't know how old he is, but looks over 70.

"But then we brought women from other villages [for marriage] who spoke Torwali language. Their children spoke in their mother tongue, so our language started dying out."

Torwali is the dominant language in the area, which is itself under pressure from Pashto, but has pushed Badeshi to the brink in this valley.

"Now our children and their children speak Torwali," said Said Gul, Rahim Gul's first cousin. "So who should we speak our own language with?"

Said Gul also doesn't know his own age. When he said he was 40, somebody corrected him. "It's more like 80!" Said Gul quickly shot back, "No, may be 50, but not 80!"

There are no job opportunities in the area, so these men have spent a lot of time in touristy Swat District, where they have picked up the Pashto language, and that is mainly how they communicate.

Because of a lack of opportunities to use Badeshi, over the decades even these three men have started forgetting the language.

While they were talking in Badeshi, Rahim Gul and Said Gul regularly forgot a word or two, and could only remember after prodding from the others.

Rahim Gul has a son, who has five children of his own, but all of them speak Torwali.

"My mother was a Torwali speaker, so my parents didn't speak any Badeshi in the house. I didn't get a chance to pick it up in childhood. I know a few words, but don't know the language. All my children speak Torwali.

"I do regret it, but now that I'm 32 there is no chance I can learn Badeshi. I'm very sad at the prospect that this language will die out with my father."

Sagar Zaman is a linguist affiliated with the Forum for Language Initiative, a non-governmental organisation dedicated to the promotion and preservation of endangered languages of Pakistan.

"I travelled to this valley three times, but the inhabitants were reluctant to speak this language in front of me," he says.

"Other linguists and I were able to collect a hundred or so words which suggested that this language belongs to Indo-Aryan sub family of languages."

Zaman Sagar says Torwali and Pashto speakers look down upon Badeshi, so there is a stigma attached to speaking it.

Perhaps it's too late to save Badeshi, but at the very least, you can learn a few words to keep the memory of the language alive:

In a retaliatory military operation after weeks of strategic restraint, Iran launched a symphonic barrage of long-range ballistic missiles at key Israeli military installations in and around Tel Aviv on October 1.

Each missile with a heavy warhead found its mark, slipping past multiple layers of air defense as if they were mildly inconvenient clouds, leaving Israel’s much-hyped military infrastructure reeling.

As the dust settled and uncomfortable truths began to emerge, the Israeli regime swiftly enacted a media blackout, banning any discussion of the number of casualties or the extent of damage.

After all, invincibility is easier to claim when nobody sees the broken glass. The regime brags about its military invincibility and impenetrable radar systems. Iranian missiles made mincemeat of them.

Among the key targets were the “Tel Nof” airbase near Tel Aviv, the “Nevatim” airbase that houses F-35 warplanes, the “Ramon” airbase, and the “Hatzerim” airbase, among others.

For the few journalists audacious enough to report on “Operation True Promise II,” and the damage it caused, like Jeremy Loffredo of Grayzone website, daring came with a price: quick detainment and trumped-up charges—a modern “reward” for seeking the truth.

But information has a habit of leaking out, and so it did: reports of massive damage inflicted by Iranian missiles like the Ghadr, Emad, and the hypersonic Fattah-1—a reminder that not all high-tech military systems can withstand the power of Iranian missiles.

It’s not for nothing that Iran is today known as a missile and drone power in the world.

CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif Chairs 16th Cabinet Meeting to Approve Major Projects Including Recruitment of 7354 College Teaching Interns (CTIs) Across Punjab

Lahore, 24 September 2024:

Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif presided over 16th provincial cabinet in which the recruitment of 7354 College Teaching Interns (CTIs) was approved across Punjab. CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif sought a comprehensive and uniform housing policy across Punjab. The cabinet paid tribute to the police personnel on performing duty in Rahim Yar Khan and Katcha area. The cabinet approved special allowance for police personnel on performing duty in the Katcha area.

The Chief Minister stopped increasing hostel charges for working women across Punjab. The CM commended Irrigation Minister Kazim Pirzada and the Irrigation Department for no loss of life being caused due to the recent floods. The cabinet approved the issuance of Rs. 50 crore ‘Endowment Fund for Writers Welfare’ under the auspices of the Information and Culture Department. The cabinet, appreciated the peaceful conduct of MDCAT examination in Punjab. It was apprised in the meeting that controversial questions are being raised on the conduct of MDCAT examination in other provinces besides Punjab.

The Chief Minister sought a monthly package plan for the differently-abled visually impaired persons. The cabinet approved a special court for persons with disabilities under the Punjab Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities Act. Conditional approval was given to delegate the powers of Sub-Registrar to the Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar. CM Punjab directed the Board of Revenue to submit a five-year comprehensive housing policy to the Cabinet. The Cabinet rejected the Working Women's Hostels policy for increasing charges by the Women Development Department.

An approval was given to sign an MoU between the Government of Punjab and the United National Office for Project Services (UNOPS) during the meeting. An approval was granted to include Lahore Knowledge Park (Nawaz Sharif Limited City) Bedian Road under the scope of Punjab Central Business District Development Authority. The Cabinet approved the nomination of Member of Gujranwala Development Authority and Vice Chairman of WASA Gujranwala.

An approval was granted to delegate the powers of Sub-Registrar to the transferee of land of legally recognized authority. The amendment of the exchange policy with government land and housing schemes and the reissuance of funds for the upgradation and construction as well as rehabilitation of tertiary care hospitals of specialized healthcare and medical education were approved during the meeting.

The Cabinet approved the request to provide financial assistance for the treatment of Syeda Sara D/O Syed Mian Abu Bakar Kaka Khel. Under the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961, an approval was granted to amend the notification to allow Assistant Director Local Government to perform duties as Chairman of the Conciliation Council. It was informed during the meeting that a ‘Central Portal’ will be set up for transparent recruitment of College Teaching Interns (CTIs) in the government colleges. An approval was granted to make amendment in the Punjab Infrastructure Development Cess Act 2015.

The cabinet approved to delegate leave and pension powers to CEO Health and Education in the districts. The Cabinet approved the appointment of Government Analyst and Provincial Drug Inspector, lection Commission Annual Report 2023 and the appointment of Caretaker Ombudsman Punjab. Provincial Ministers, Chief Secretary, IG Police, Secretaries and other relevant officials attended the meeting.

According to UN convention, the government should allocate 9% of GDP for health and education and 3% for social protection, he said. He demanded removal of impediments to registration of trade unions.Syeda Ghulam Fatima requested the Supreme Court to implement its own decisions for the elimination of bonded and child labour. Regarding 56% unemployment in Pakistan, she said that such huge decrease in employment would lead towards forced and bonded labour.M Shahid emphasised the need to form special task force for implementation of minimum wages award 2023. At the end of the seminar, the workers rallied before Alhamra, The Mall demanding govt to include workers in all welfare schemes. The participants of the rally demanded that the government should allocate 9% of GDP for health and education and 3% for social protection for eradication of child labour.They demanded to issue social security card, housing, water and sanitation facilities to brick kiln workers. Chief minister must probe into the registration of fake criminal cases against brick kiln workers and take action against responsible police officers.
