It’s Fine Press Friday!
This Friday we highlight another book by Gaylord Schanilec and Midnight Paper Sales, out of Stockholm, WI. It’s Come to This, by Twin Cities writer Patricia Hampl, was printed in 2023, in a limited edition of 70 copies signed by Hampl, Schanilec, and Lila Shull – who drew and printed the cover lithograph of ginkgo leaves. The wood engravings are by Schanilec – the large river panorama based on a photograph by Hampl. Typefaces used include Oldrich Menhart’s Monotype Menhart,Hermann Zapf’s Michealangelo, and an italic cast by Nick Gill. Molly Brown assisted the printing “in the wilds of Western Wisconsin,” on the Vandercook Universal III. The paper was handmade in the mid-20th century, at the Velke Losiny Paper Mill in what is now the Czech Republic. According to the colophon, this was when the formula included more sizing, and the formidable paper therefore "retains its pleasing 'rattle.'" Matthew Lawler Zimmerman bound the edition at Studio Alcyon.
“Life’s a journey—no wonder it’s our most ancient metaphor. A platitude, but only truth can harden into cliché.” Written during Covid isolation at her home in St. Paul, It’s Come to This explores escape – that “Midwestern birthright, the desire to be somewhere else” – as well as the significance of a long pandemic: “At your age, a year is a serious percentage of what’s left.” With the background of Midwestern summer storms, the George Floyd protests, and menacing Boogaloo Bois, Hampl walks her dog along the Mississippi feeling both isolated from and deeply connected to the events around her. The text first appeared in The American Scholar in October of 2021. “What exactly, has come to what?” Hampl wonders to her dog. “What is this it I sigh into, what is the this I keep falling upon? What distress and what comfort does this muttered mantra express?”
Shull’s rich pattern of ginkgo leaves across the cover speaks to the dog’s favorite spot to stop along their walks. “I get it.” Hampl concludes to her companion. “And now, standing by the side of the moving water, apparently we have achieved our destination, the ghostly This.”

Book 535
Hermann Zapf and His Design Philosophy
Hermann Zapf
Society of Typographic Arts 1987
So, this book carries the unfortunate and unwieldy subtitle: Selected Articles and Lectures on Calligraphy and Contemporary Developments in Type Design, with Illustrations and Bibliographical Notes, and a Complete List of His Typefaces. (And a partridge in a pear tree.) That noted, I think I can skip over what this book is about. The other thing about this book is that whoever owned it before me took exceedingly good care of it. It is pristine, save from some slight shelf wear. And as one would expect from a book published by the Society of Typographic Arts, it is impeccably designed and printed with a full cloth binding and full color throughout on high quality paper. Add in hundreds of stunning typographic samples by the great Hermann Zapf, this book is a designer’s dream.

Frederika is my new 18 inch doll from Zapf Creations brand. I'm so happy to have her. Zapf is an old German brand of dolls that I only learned about this year, and I bought this "Friends of Babycakes" doll not knowing much about them. They're very inexpensive secondhand, and so I felt like it wasn't too much of a risk to see how well this girl worked as a modern character and a friend to my other dolls. I always like being pleasantly surprised by new or unfamiliar brands, and it was definitely a surprise to see how high quality she is. Her skin is a very soft, velvety, and lifelike vinyl that none of my other dolls have. Her eyes open and close. Her joints at the neck, shoulders, and legs are so smooth and hold poses really well. She truly is beautifully made.

Her face mold vaguely reminds me of Gotz dolls, but of course they're not affiliated with each other. It could just be that both brands are based in Germany, and take their inspiration from dolls made there in the 19th and early 20th century.
Frederika's original name was Elisabeth but since I already have an Elizabeth, I picked out a new name for her that would reflect her German heritage.

In her original outfit, minus her little neckerchief. As you can see, Frederika has an all-vinyl body. Her proportions are a bit different than American Girl and other cloth-bodied dolls, but for the most part they can share each others' clothes.

Some of the lovely little details. Her dainty shoes and stockings are my favorite part of her outfit.

Book 482
Manuale Typographicum
Hermann Zapf
Z-Presse/MIT Press 1968
We’re starting to get into a really interesting bunch of books now. The next two books were part of an epic estate sale I handled, and I knew as soon as I saw them that they were coming home with me. I believe they were originally issued with both dust jackets and slipcases, which are now lost, but the interiors are flawless and stunning. From the copyright page, it appears that this book was first printed as an oblong quarto in 1954, and this 1968 edition is the first trade limited edition. As such, it is signed and numbered (#704) by the great Hermann Zapf. Printed on fine heavy rag paper, the print quality of both books is absolutely incredible. With pristine type examples from around the world, printed in two colors, this book is an absolute treasure.
