NO ZONE Chapter 14
Space was the closest thing since No Zone headquarters he felt to home.
Your first time in space you're simply caught with the amazing feeling of how small you are. How vulnerable. How little you matter. You forget about yourself and look at the bigger picture. You want to devote every fiber of your being to a greater cause, which is to some day extend the hand of peace and co-existence to all you meet. To learn evermore about existence itself.
That was perhaps the thing that made No Zoners a different breed of social. Knowing how small they were. Knowing what a miracle, and how fragile, life was. It was easy to tell who got that message and who didn't.
Social life in the ZCC depended on the people you chose to know. If you weren't trustworthy, everyone knew, and the person in question would find their life to be a desolate one, even if they tried to find someone. If you chose to know an untrustworthy person, from merely talking to them at all, up to antagonizing them, life became very difficult for you.
If you were a bully, the first shred of evidence had you dishonorably discharged in an instant. There was no room at all for entitlement, or friction between their own ranks. Not when they had much bigger problems to worry about. A bad person made an even worse cop. Paranoia, fear, no self control, no effort. In other cases, maybe even too loose a hold on things like sentiment, or compassion. There was a fine line that separated good units from bad ones. After all, if you didn't handle the pieces in other zones with extreme care, this happened.
Zonic was watching Shadows unconscious body hang in the cabin of the Orca. With No gravity in space, and no advanced space gear, the ultimate life form was not attached to the ship. The blue elite had his helmet closed, waiting for Shadow to wake up. He had attempted to knock him out with enough force, to where the prime zoner wouldn't remember what he saw a minuet before. However, Zonic knew he couldn't let him go until he was sure.
In the mean time, he was doing a checkup on his own sanity. Afraid? Understandable. Guilty? You should be. Suicidal? Who wasn't? Pain? Nothing you can't walk off. Emotional pain? Maybe just a little. But he was more concerned about where that pain was coming from.
Was it from failure? Most likely not... Zonic knew there was no point in feeling loss over failure. It didn't change anything. All you had to do was fix your present. Then... was it knowing he might be dying alone? Well... he was surprised he hadn't been killed in battle, or by a massive outbreak of space spores that often plagued zone cops. Sentiment hadn't ever been on the top of his priorities. But granted... he did feel loss. Not like they had been wiped from existence, but like they had died. He'd seen death, and it was a whole lot worse than just... vanishing. Being Thanos snapped from existence wasn't death. It was just, not being there anymore. At all. Not physically or even spiritually. Death, was like their presence still hung over you, yet you knew you could never see them again. In some way shape or form, their atoms existed somewhere.
Zonic felt that presence since the moment he woke up in this ship. Which was perhaps the reason he was preparing to find out, that there were survivors trapped in a lucid sleep, as Zails theorized. He had to admit, despite the danger of disappointment, he did not expect that he would be the last of his kind forever. Or at least, until he disposed of himself if that were the case.
Or hell, probably work for GUN and set mobius straight until he felt like crawling between the walls.
A groan brought his attention back to the large black and red striped hedgehog in his midst.
Shadow couldn't find where the floor made contact with his body. Opening his eyes, he saw metal a foot or two below, and suddenly, his entire form jerked with shock as he screamed. Scrambling to put his feet under him and tuck and roll upon impact.
There was none.
There was no wind either. He was floating. No... wait a minute...
Uncurling and looking up, the black hedgehog was shocked yet again as he caught sight of the mystery mobian dressed in a red suit. His green vest rimmed with yellow straps. His golden pauldrons and yellow utility belt. His violet black laser gauntlets that cupped his elbows. Yellow cuffs that protected his thighs, and boots of the same violet black colour. Their souls more like metal hooves that looked similar to his own skates, with a stripe that ran up his shin and encircled where the boot met his knees in another sharp point. There was blood lining the tip to his right knee...
But the mobian now had his helmet on. It's black beak like visor was staring at him, devoid of motion or emotion. It's red fin like antenna atop the two golden disks on either side, were erect. They had two golden bands maybe an inch or two from their top. The disks themselves were no longer flickering with the strange blue light.
"H-.. hello?" Shadow asked quietly, trying to see of it was awake at all, or if this was still just a dream...
"What's the last thing you remember?" The dim and static voice asked him immediately.
The black hedgehog swallowed hard, and began to perspire just the slightest bit. "Y-you're Sonic..." his own voice wavered.
The mobian gave a disappointed and solemn sigh, before once again there was a click, and the visor and jaw guard of the helmet separated and retracted to reveal the hedgehog behind them.
He was staring at emerald heart shaped eyes, rimmed with blue fur, and the beige of a furless muzzle.
"Who-... who are you?..." Shadow asked first, aghast.
The look alike, put down his helmet, gesturing at himself. "Hello Shadow the Hedgehog. I come from an alternate universe, or 'zone' called the No Zone. It once ran perpendicular through space time, until recently Sonics last stand with Megaman, separating their universes. It evaporated your own multiverse in the process, and as far as I can tell, I'm the only survivor. My name is Zonic, an alternate version of your Sonic. Otherwise known as a doppelgänger. I am a zone cop, one of the once millions that maintained the balance between zones. We kept the multiverse stable." The hedgehog finished, speaking slowly enough to where Shadow could sortof piece things together.
Sonic... alternate universes... zones... the no zone...
Wait a minuet...
Suddenly, Shadows eyes widened as a memory came back to him all so suddenly, though he did not believe it had existed before.
He had a fight with a green hedgehog that looked like Sonic. He was pathetic... called himself Scourge and wore a leather jacket. Shoved his face in the ground. After they had beaten him up, Sonic told him he was going to turn him in to the zone cops, and upon asking later who they were, the hero of mobius explained to them his adventures across the multiverse accompanied by his doppelgänger. Zonic.
"I've... I've heard of you!" Shadow eventually gasped, and stared at him wide eyed. "Wait- the multiverse! You're telling me-?!"
"Dead." Zonic replied curtly. "Doesn't exist anymore."
The ultimate life form was stunned. "What about the sol dimension?"
"Also dead. However, Blaze has spent enough time here to become imbedded in the prime zones nature, otherwise known as a 'loop'. She has no memory of her past home, if anything believes it had all happened here." The zone cop explained, then gave a dark smirk. "Yeah don't worry, your girlfriend still remembers you." He added malevolently.
Shadow blushed slightly, and growled. "Is there anything you Don't know about me?" He asked spitefully. This doppelgänger's attitude was allot more abrasive than Sonics mere button pushing...
Zonic shrugged. "When you're going to get off my ship." He responded, casually.
Oh yeah... a real piece of work this guy must be.
But there was something else... he was trying to put together how this Sonic doppelgänger had behaved when pretending to be an alien. He hadn't seemed so strong then... There were things that weren't adding up.
How had he survived? How had he gotten this ship? How had he gotten robotic implants, especially as a Sonic? There was something this guy was hiding... But as long as Shadow could ground him, he supposed he had the upper hand here. He could ask whatever he wanted.
"How did you survive if the multiverse was destroyed?" The black hedgehog asked first.
"We set up a web to nullify the chaos energy traveling between zones. I was in charge of coordinating the points, and as a result I, and many others, were trapped between a field, putting our atoms in a sort of half life. Someone then took me, tossed me in this ship, sent me here, and now I have to pull any other survivors from a void of dark matter." Zonic replied flatly.
Shadow winced slightly... well... those were two of his questions answered and a third just coming to mind. But that unsettling feeling he was picking up from the Sonic doppelgänger, had just been reinforced.
"How did you get those?" Shadow then asked, keeping his staid demeanor, as he gestured to the metal that was apart of the zone cops head.
"It was purely an experiment our kind felt like trying. I let them." Zonic answered.
Red flag number one... Zonic knew what he was looking for and answered the question he had subliminally asked, while avoiding any other detail.
He knew exactly what this was, as he used the same trick himself...
"You didn't include your opinion on the matter..." Shadow remarked skeptically. Zonic didn't seem surprised.
"Well, Ive got better things to do than worry about that." He returned, a bit annoyed as he rolled his eyes.
"Like what?!" Shadow jabbed, making an effort to appear lethal. "You just told me you're alone!"
The last zone cop looked at him with a degrading raised brow. "Well I was gonna find out, until you decided to hop on for a ride." Zonic replied lightly.
The black hedgehog stopped. He stared at the Sonic doppelgänger for a moment longer, and it stared right back. Shadow then narrowed his eyes, trying to envision the alien that had sulked about the day before, and had some how beat up The Sonic, hero of mobius. Finally, he shook his head, rubbing it firmly.
"Wait-... wait, I'm trying to figure this out..." the lifeform said, clenching his jaw, and then re-arranging himself in zero gravity.
"Your name is Zonic."
"Correct."
"You are a version of Sonic from a different universe."
"Yes."
"Which doesn't exist anymore."
"Mhm."
"Oh..." Shadow trailed off, suddenly understanding what that meant...
If that were the case, and this Zonic person had explained at the beginning of their conversation just why that had happened...
"That means... you don't have a home." Shadow finished, with more empathy than before. Well... now he didn't have to worry about alien invasions...
"I never needed one." Zonic the zone cop replied, the ultimate life form feeling as if he was now seeing him, and not experiencing some kind of fever dream.
Shadow was soaking in the gravity of the situation. So, Zonic wasn't an alien. This technology didn't come from another world, it was still mobian. Just, really advanced. The black hedgehog then looked back at the other, who was still staring at him blankly with dark jade eyes. It was like he was watching him think... the intent in his focused leer suggested he knew Shadow was thinking, and was merely waiting for another question.
In fact, the more he watched Zonic, the more differences he could pick out between this doppelgänger and the true blue hero. The first thing being this doppelgängers fur wasn't a true vibrant cobalt blue. It was a lighter shade, and rather unkempt. His quills were a complete disaster... not only tangled but splintered as well. Perhaps they were cut so that they fit in that helmet...
"So..." Shadow continued, bending his legs in a sitting position though it didn't really matter. "Remind me what you're doing here?" He asked.
Zonic gave a tired sigh. "I was sent here after we had ensured your zone retained its molecules. The greatest scientist of our time has a theory that our personnel might've been caught in a null field, so that their atoms resisted complete reincarnation into your zone, but were torn apart across space. My ACA was damaged so first I needed to be repaired by Tails, before preforming a max range scan that would receive the individual radio frequencies from the microchips laced in every unit." The blue elite explained, but Shadow had caught a more interesting subject in the first half of that response.
"The greatest scientist of your time? Who would that be?" The ultimate life form inquired.
Shadow noticed instantly Zonic became tense. His subconscious fidgeting had stopped, and he broke eye contact, even if it was only slight. The zone cop seemed to be looking at the dashboard of the ship... Shadow turned around. There was nothing there... The black hedgehog looked at the doppelgänger again expectantly.
"The Who doesn't matter." Zonic finally replied. The GUN agent noted red flag number two. He didn't want to give names... perhaps the result of either incredible sources, or maybe a personal connection...
"I just need maybe five minuets to see if they were right, and if they weren't, then I'll be out of your quills." The zone cop finished, the tone in his voice too casual compared to his initial start. Shadow could sense he was starting to loose a bit of his resolve...
"What's that supposed to mean?" Shadow pressed, sensing he was on the verge of the answer that he really wanted.
Zonic seemed to know that too, as his distant and staid expression became tense with spite and reluctance. "Means you don't have to worry about me." He said, with an aggressive edge.
Shadow remained calm. Oh yeah... he had seen this all before... in a mirror actually... trying to act tough. Like you had things under control. Like it didn't even bother you...
"What are you gonna do? If you find there were no survivors?" The black hedgehog asked, his interrogation holding a silver lining of both understanding yet concern.
Shadow was adding all the pieces together, about this doppelgänger. The reason he was getting such an odd feeling from him. Zonic was not acting one bit like the Sonic he knew. He radiated with experience and unspoken context. He was a teenager, who as a zone cop allegedly managed the very elements of life itself. He was a lone survivor, after failing at the one job they had which was keeping the multiverse from collapsing. He was alone and ill-prepared in a world he'd always seen, but never truly experienced.
Shadow didn't expect anything like Sonic, but it almost seemed like Zonic wasn't even acting like how he should be, given the situation.
"Answer me." Shadow the hedgehog demanded, his tone firm if not bordering on anger.
Zonic was still staring at him with resentment, his body language calm and confident but his eyes glimmering, as if he knew exactly how his response would change the shape of this conversation.
"Well then my job will be done." The blue elite replied. Still! He was trying to put up a wall! Cut him off from the real answers! Shadow felt a growl creep across the bridge of his muzzle.
Zonic stood up, a faint snarl of his own he seemed to suppress. "I don't need your help, if that's what you're getting at! And even if I do, I don't want it. You can help me by devoting yourself to completely forgetting you ever saw anything! I know what I'm doing, and what I'm doing constitutes no strings attached! Got that?" The blue elite finished with a harsh bite.
Shadow uncrossed his legs, and extended his arms a little below him, his hands glowing with red energy. "Listen kid, special agent to space cop? I don't appreciate your tone." The ultimate life form started. "You're going to tell me everything now, or spill it in front of human intelligence back on mobius. Take your pick." He ended with a foreboding growl, his fingers curling as he glared at the blue zone cop who merely gave an incredulous fake laugh.
It's theatric chuff alone was an insult...
"Oh, you wanna start playing cards? Alright!" Zonic replied with sarcastic vibrancy, reaching up to his vest without breaking eye contact and unlatching a clasp at its center before shrugging it off.
"Catch!" The blue elite said, tossing the armor to him.
Shadow didn't have time to take In the fact when Zonic threw the article, it seemed to fall as if it had proper gravity to it. By the time he had the thing in his hands it was already too late, and the black hedgehog was yanked by his arms to the floor; his expression of shock short lived as he felt metal pin him down from his back.
The zone cop had him flattened underneath a leg, but before Shadow could struggle, there was the unmistakable quiet sound, of an unbuttoning to a holster. The black hedgehog felt something cold press against the back of his neck, as the upper half of his body pressed even tighter against the floor, when the blue elite gripped him behind the shoulders. Zonic knelt down from behind to murmur in his ear.
"Gullible as always... the freedom fighters biggest weakness albeit rare but easy to exploit. What I have here is something like a staple gun, accept it shoots a chip in you, that hinders your chaos powers completely. Useful when dealing with stronger doppelgängers. The only way to de-activate it is to surgically remove it. Think your commander would bother to expend the recourses? Or maybe He'd make use of a tighter leash..." Zonic teased, Shadow at first craving to kill this goon, but any though of revenge replaced with awkward fear.
Considering the fact he had used his powers to walk out on his commander just last night, the zone cop had just put down his ace in this little card game. Commander Tower wouldn't grant Shadow his freedom willingly... if anything, tell him it served as a suitable punishment for getting pinned down in the first place...
Shadow was snarling with a savage anger, but then again, perhaps this guy wasn't worth the trouble after all... He had tried extending an olive branch, but the message was quite clear. Teamwork was not an option. "Fine." The ultimate lifeform replied curtly. "I give."
Zonic let him go, and Shadow immediately shoved the vest away from him, turning around to see if the Sonic doppelgänger would keep to his word.
Instead, he was face to face with utter humiliation...
The zone cop was not holding some weird gadget, or anything that even resembled the iconic handgun of law enforcement.
Instead, what Zonic had pressed against the back of his neck, was the clip of a pen. He was grinning at him with a broken smile, apparently both thoroughly amused and proud of himself.
Shadow couldn't help but smile back in disbelief. Oh was he furious...
"Well mister funny man..." the ultimate life form sneered, a dangerous and deranged sternness in his garnet eyes. "Is this how you get your sick kicks?"
Zonic knew perfectly well he had gone a bit over the edge with the level of disrespect, he had just shown Shadow The Hedgehog prime. Still, no matter how much he loved to play with fire, it was smart if he submit now so that no collateral damage was necessary...
"Sorry," the blue elite started casually, raising his hands in surrender. "You know how Sonic's do. We take out our frustration by antagonizing other people."
That last remark snapped Shadow from the edge of a chaos fueled rampage, suitable as payback for this little elf's antics. That was.... oddly way too true... When Sonic was annoyed he started throwing shots at people, or even his own teammates out of the blue. But that hadn't been Sonics heartfelt sarcasm or an insensitive comment. Zonic had straight up manipulated him with not just his fears, but personal ones at that, for the sake of entertaining himself.
That was straight sociopathy! But as Shadow considered more deeply the situation, he supposed he had tried asserting himself over the zone cop in the first place. It wasn't just as simple as a mind game. It was a demonstration. A warning... What Shadow threw at him, Zonic could throw right back.
The ultimate life form stared at the Sonic doppelgänger with new interest, nodding his head slightly. "Clever... I'll give you that." Shadow finally said, agreeing to the unspoken message he should give respect if he wanted respect...
Zonic's shaky amusement relaxed a bit, as if he had actually been nervous of what he almost gotten himself into. His awkward smile became one of a more natural pain. Almost bittersweet.
Now that Shadow had tolerated Zonics little game, the zone cop didn't seem so scary and comatose anymore...
"Seems like you know how to work the rails of my train of thought then huh?..." the GUN agent continued, reaching down to pick up the vest yet again, but this time to put it on himself to rid of this rather embarrassing zero gravity.
"It was my job..." The doppelgänger began, walking forward as the black hedgehog slipped his arms through the rather tight straps, not bothering to even attempt to latch it together again. The lock looked complicated already, but he didn't want to be faced with the embarrassment of struggling and failing.
Zonic walked past the black hedgehog, still uneasy in his company but knowing hard feelings wouldn't get them anywhere. He rested against the dashboard of the Orca, taking a deep breath and gazing down at the blue planet below.
"You understand right? Why it's important you can't tell anyone of our existence?" The blue elite asked, now in all earnesty.
Shadow looked around at him once he felt his feet touch the ground, and stay there. "Of course," he started, first noting that Zonics bones were visible from underneath his suit. The juts of his spine, and steep shoulder bones. Then, how the suit otherwise rested flat against his back. The black hedgehog thought all male hedgehogs had the two distinguished fins just beside their shoulders...
"I want you to explain to me why, you know it's important." Zonic clarified, glancing over his shoulder and then realizing he was being stared at. He turned around and leaned back against the dashboard to face him.
Shadow blinked, and looked anywhere else besides him. "Well... I'm pretty sure the others would be upset, knowing it was their fault-"
"No." The blue elite interrupted him sharply. "This isn't a matter of fault. What happened was just nature. The reason why no one can know of the past multiverses existence, especially the No Zone in particular, is because your society isn't ready. People loose their minds over the existentialism for starters; but if people like GUN, Robotnick, or even The Freedom Fighters got hands on our technology, it could mean death for your planet and others. It's like giving a toddler a grenade. Sure the idea sounds cool, but if you don't understand the damage you can do, it's unthinkable." Zonic explained, Shadow nodding in understanding.
He definitely didn't want The Doctor getting his hands on any more advanced inhibition technology... and even if Sonic and his friends got it, Eggman could study it. If anyone got anything, another party could study it... that was just how mobius worked.
The zone cop had turned around after he had finished his reasoning, and crouched down, the sound of metal scratching could be heard in the cabin.
"What are you doing?" Shadow asked, staying where he was, noticing that the elite seemed to be a fan of personal space.
"I would've dropped you off first but I can't wait... I need to scan for my friends microchips." Zonic replied, unscrewing one of the panels underneath the dashboard, and whittling through the tangle of cables.
He sounded anxious, and the ultimate life form found himself almost equally as curious, deciding not to ask anything more so that he wouldn't delay the other. Still, it bothered him Zonic was clearly intent on committing suicide if he found he was alone.
'The existentialism'... interesting...
Shadow understood that if there was no multiverse to protect, the zone cops existence was obsolete. It wasn't like Zonic could walk freely on mobius either... when Sonic had come back from his visit to the No Zone, he had eavesdropped him talking about how his doppelgänger seemed short of temper. He could guess that given time Sonic and Zonic would get on eachothers nerves. Just like how he and Sonic were... Unable to feel at home with your own kind... needing a constant purpose. A distraction...
Shadow understood all too well how that felt...

NO ZONE Chapter 7
"Hey Zonic!"
"Go away."
"Rude..."
"How did you get in here?"
"Y'all don't have allot of security at 3am..."
"You need to leave."
"Can't. got a leftover box from Carrabas I don't feel like carrying."
"You carried it here, you can carry it back."
"I don't feel like it though." Zhadow met him with a mischievous smirk, holding out the black plastic takeout box, the blue elite finally glancing over his shoulder from the dashboard of the monitors, with an annoyed frown.
Zonic then left his adjustments, and turned around completely, leaning back against the edge of the panels careful not to hit any of the controls. He flipped up his visor, the tint protective against the blue light of the screens, but hard to see in the otherwise pitch black room. There were no lights, aside from the glow of the thousands of screens that coated every wall, smaller ones on cabinets of their own, and even around a support column at the back of the room.
Zhadow was standing a meter or two in front of him, his long brown trench coat unzipped, his grey dress shirt unbuttoned at the top to let free the tuft of white fur on his chest. His baggy blue jeans were worn at the knees, and were held up by a black box buckled belt. Have fun saying that three times fast
The bottoms of his jeans were tucked into brown ankle boots, strapped around the ankles and at the top of the boot with grey fastens. A golden iPod nano was clipped to the shoulder board of his coat. His suave smirk seemed permanently etched into his tan muzzle, his red striped quills arched up in pristine condition. His eyes were such a vibrant red, almost brighter than his genesis's. But Zonic didn't remember them always being like that... More often in the past those eyes had shot him down with dark and disturbed fury...
"I suppose I should applaud you for making an effort to apologize." He said flatly, crossing his arms.
This was Zhadows third break-in on monitor room seven, to bring him food.
Zhadow shrugged casually. "I mean if you want, I could re-introduce myself. Say, aren't you guys working on an amnesia ray?" The agent of Zone Unit Neutral added, walking forward once he was certain he wouldn't be decked.
Zonic sighed and shook his head.
"I don't expect it will be functional for another few years. There's just not enough research on that area of neurology." He started, accepting Zhadows company beside him as he dragged out a foldable metal chair from underneath the dashboard.
The agent sat down, placing the box on the controls much to Zonics disapproval but at least his partner seemed kind enough to do it gently.
"Right right... well, if it's any consultation everyone in the ZCC hates me, so if you have any doubts then I'm sure you'll b-"
"What do you mean?" The blue elite asked with slightly shocked curiosity.
There were not nearly as many ZUN agents as ZCC officers. The administration was very selective about partners, and so gossip between the two cores didn't get around very well. However, Zhadow only met him with a satirical grin, and a gleam in his eyes.
"Zon-zon, you're literally the poster kid of the No Zone. I think people are being a little judgey about the fact I still have my job, and we still hang out..." the striped agent finished, his tone carefree, but holding a bit of awkward weight at the end..
Dawn finally enlightened Zonics memory, after he had been spotted in the shower with bruises since returning from the ZUN agents 'care'.
There had been a huge riot... not a literal one, but everyone he had run into for the next month always asked him about Zhadow. They were up in arms about it! Still... that had been a year ago. The pressure had been a huge distraction from his work, especially after Zails had threatened to disown him if he couldn't keep it together...
Which of course only made things a whole lot worse.
Funnily enough, Zhadow in the midst of rehab, shifted his anger towards the ZCC for being unjust. A huge comfort to Zonic, who was still new to social life, while it attacked him like a swarm of space wasps. Last year had been horrendous...
But this year thankfully, they had started making the slow but steady progress in healing Zhadows name, and Zonics sanity. These late night visits had allowed them to 'talk things out' in a secure environment.
Secure in the sense any other nearby staff would rush to the scene if the two hedgehogs started fighting again.
Zonic shook his head with a disappointed sigh.
"fucking idiots..." he muttered, striped agent raising his brows with jaunty surprise.
"Woah there space ranger! That's not nice!" Zhadow remarked with a sarcastically offended shout, the blue elite rolling his eyes as he took the takeout box.
"I just think they have no room to talk when I've seen people here who I wonder ever got through basic training." Zonic continued with spite, opening the box and taking the plastic fork his partner handed him.
"They're so dramatic! And it's so annoying because then they do stupid shit, because they don't have any self control, and then I have to sort them out and it's- Ugh!" He growled, gripping the fork hard enough in a pent up fury, to where it snapped in his fist.
Zonic unfolded his palm, looking down with wide eyes at the broken utensil, before sighing hopelessly.
"I just don't think they have any room to stick their nose in our business..." he finished, stabbing the remaining half down into the ravioli.
"That's right ol' buddy ol' pal, let it all out." Zhadow returned with such theatric disinterest, it earned a short but legitimate laugh from the blue elite.
Still, the agent shifted from his layback position with his hand on his head, to sit foreword on the chair, looking up at him.
"But seriously, I think you can trust me on this when I say you hit em' with that Dilligaf." He said, and when Zonic met his eyes with narrowed confusion, Zhadow elaborated.
"Does-It-Look-Like-I-Give-A-Fuck. Dilligaf."
"It says it's an explorer looking for this girl... apparently he got attacked by.. space pirates?"
"Oh- yeah those exist. People attack other people for their ships or stuff."
"Ah, ok. Well, there you have it! If I don't fix it, it can't leave. It looks like it's biomechanics can help it do all sorts of stuff, but maybe the output required to control its ship is too much for it to handle like this." Tails finished, sliding his tablet across the kitchen island, in front of Team Dark with Zonics improvised story on the screen.
Shadow leaned in, read it, narrowed his eyes, then stood up with menacing intent.
"I don't believe it. How is that translating in English when that thing shouldn't know anything about this planet?" The black hedgehog asked with a growl, stalking foreword towards Zonic who raised one of his lasers, ready to fry and run.
Sonic quickly stood between them, his own expression finally angry.
"Cool it Shadow! If you're worried about invasions, things are gonna get real nasty if you attack it!" He barked, with his quills bristled.
Tails joined his brother, standing next to Sonic with an equally frustrated snarl.
"Sonics right! Radio waves have frequencies! They're not separated by languages! They're the same universally! The Electric has been repurposed as a translator, so if anything this alien is probably able to decode its own language into ours with the cache data!"
Despite the fact Sonic and Tails were defending him, Zonic felt his temper edging even closer to its breaking point. And if Rouge hadn't joined in beside Shadow, he was sure he would've taken matters into his own hands, very quickly.
The spy rested a hand on the black hedgehogs shoulder, pulling him back sharply.
"Come on Shadow! We all know you got a grudge but you're not using common sense!" Rouge reprimanded sharply, glaring him down with fierce sapphire eyes and bared fangs.
"We came here to gather information so a bunch of humans with guns wouldn't have to show their faces around here! But with the way your acting you just might cause a political crisis all on your own!" She finished firmly, and Shadow who suddenly found himself in the middle of a grilling, took a reluctant but still guilty step away.
"Fine." He said, turning his back on the team and crossing his arms.
"But if that thing starts causing a ruckus, I'm sure In the future you can promise team dark will no longer be mobian exclusive." He finished.
That sentence struck Zonic with an intriguing thought, although to everyone else they seemed standoffish. Still however, the elite had seen enough of their dramatics. His mental timer on 'just not thinking about the situation' had finally run out, and with everyone shouting and the sterile lights of the room, it was really not helping his headache.
Grabbing a box of orange chicken, and the cover to his right disk, Zonic slipped past Tails and Sonic, easily dodged Rouge trying to grab him, and walked quickly back down the corridor leading to the den space. He'd spotted a door around the middle of the hallway earlier, and before Sonic made the decision to chase after him, opened it without second thought.
It was a bathroom, the lights already out and no windows. The small space would've been pitch black, if not for the crack at the bottom of the door. Like the outside, everything in this room was either white or grey, a shower space at the end of the with no curtain or glass wall. Just blackness, and grayness. Only the quiet ambient static of silence, and the room enclosed on all sides to where the voices debating down the hall were faint and muffled.
Perfect...
The blue elite sighed, and rested his back against the wall, locking the door behind him.
Ah well... he supposed whenever Sonic and Shadow were in the same room things were bound to get ugly... and for a brief moment, a smile flitted against the corner of his lip, but no further. Really it was just Shadows problem but... again Zonic found he could understand where he was coming from. His point hadn't been wrong, but Sonics was more valid. Attacking something before you observed its full capability, meant death in his case...
He remembered times where things wound up on the cosmic intersection by accident. Which was what most of their calls were. Rifts opening by themselves, a magic spell gone wrong, maybe they explored a little too far. Occasionally, a few of these lost Zoners were allot bigger, and plenty more dangerous than any zone cop. As long as you respected everyone first, then there was no trouble. An evil warlord could be simply confused and rather helpless, and despite the fact they could be belittling, you were the only person that could guide them back home.
'Welcome to the cosmic intersection!'
A phrase that lived in every protein of his DNA.
After all, it was an age old idea... space was no place for war... you could not own space. You should not fight in space. Space, could be explored, but was never meant to be controlled or categorized. You were merely a visitor, and were bound by nature to respect its rules. Zonic had seen more of space than he had of forests or any earthbound territory. Apart from the reinforced but expressive cityscape of the ZCC headquarters.
Tugging his gloves loose by their wrists, and then pulling off the rest of his gauntlets, Zonic unscrewed the other cap of his ACA, before pulling free the top and bottom halves of his helmet from their inserts.
He took a deep breath of free air, no longer restricted by the filters of his jaw guard.
That felt better... normally he never had a problem feeling short of breath but apparently this was a special occasion..
setting down the pieces on top of his gauntlets, he then unlatched the metal hook of his vest, where the crisscross yellow bands twisted in the middle. Then, propping himself up onto the counter of the sink, kicked his boots loose before maneuvering his ankles free from the tight space that kept them almost latched against his body.
In the event you ever had to go underwater, you didn't loose your shoes.
With nearly 70 pounds of armor off his body, Zonic let himself slip sideways off the counter, and fall flat on his back onto the tile floor, his splintered and dulled quills saving his head from any serious impact. Still, his spine had arched a little too far in the descent, and stung around its middle as he smacked against the stone. Not bad though, if you knew how to fall properly.
He'd let himself rest against the ice cold floor, before he tried running some water over his head in an attempt to soothe the 'fever dream', as Sonic had put it, this all was...
Grabbing the box of orange chicken and rice that was by his armor, in a careless pile that would've normally been neatly folded, Zonic gave a relieved sigh as he was finally about to strike one thing off his list of 'things to take care of before you have to off yourself'.
Right... about that... his mind had been yearning to dive into its maverick thoughts for a while now. And since it seemed like getting repaired was going to take just a little while longer, he finally decided to give in. He knew good and well they were dangerous, and had the potential to make one unstable and delirious, but he trusted himself enough to snag his own mentality from diving too deep or changing its attitude.
If anything, he felt it kept him sharp. Able to answer questions on the spot, and explore all options. Map out the paths he had before choosing one.
There was a knock at the door, and Tails's voice, however Zonic merely responded with a feral hiss, something he could probably get away with as a supposedly semi-aquatic creature. Tails seemed to leave after that, allowing the blue elite to begin his thought experiments in peace.
Biting into the hot, spongey chicken, relishing the sweet tang in his mouth, the first person he wandered to was Zails...
His last words to him... at least, in person.
'Be brave. Explore to your hearts content.'
It almost sounded like the head doctor expected him to live on... sure his childhood consisted of rigorous education and constant tests of problem solving skills. But honestly?... there wasn't much left in this world he felt the need to explore... not with no
Zone to share it with. He'd seen almost everything... life in the prime zone, or at least on mobius was way too easy. Predictable.
He supposed if he ventured out into space, there may be more, but...
In all reality the truth was evident to himself, as much as he was surprised to think it.
If Zails did will he live,
He just didn't want to be alone...
In the No Zone he tended to avoid people to stay out of trouble, and keep focused on his goal. As that was how he felt he'd achieve a fulfilling life. Even when Zhadow had introduced him to public social life, he felt as if people were more afraid of him than he was of them.
Then again, zone cops did tend to carry dormant space viruses...
Anyways, that didn't mean he regretted anything, but now the circumstances had changed completely. If there were survivors... and Zonic had the ever so suspicious feeling there was, how would they live?
He wasn't worried so much of where, than he as of how. Would they merely live on to experience the things they couldn't have before? What was the point in that? It's not like you'd care about what didn't happen, when you were dead.
Ah, but what sense would that make? If that were the case, then why not just end it where you stood? If it meant so little.
Things like love, family. Wonder. Adrenaline. The spices of life.
If others wanted to live to experience them, or at least be truly dead, Zonic had to do this.
Even though it felt like he tasted these spices with every morning or night he was served...
Mm. this orange chicken was good though.
