4,000-Year-Old Ceramic Drainage System Discovered in China
The people of Pingliangtai built and operated the system without any help from a central state government.
China’s Longshan period which lasted from about 2600 to 2000 BCE is best known for its sophisticated pottery shapes, but their sophisticated plumbing is getting some well-deserved attention. A team of archaeologists found the oldest known ceramic water pipes in China, demonstrating that locals were capable of major feats of engineering without a centralized state government. The findings are described in a study published August 14 in the journal Nature Water.
The newly unearthed network of ceramic water pipes and drainage ditches were found at the ancient walled city of Pingliangtai, located in what is now the Huaiyang District of Zhoukou City in central China. The town was home to roughly 500 people during neolithic times and had protective walls and a surrounding moat. It sits on the Upper Huai River Plain on the vast Huanghuaihai Plain, and the climate 4,000 years ago saw large seasonal climate shifts. Summer monsoons could dump a foot and a half of rain on the region every month.

With all this rain, it was critical for the region to manage floodwaters. The people of Pingliangtai appear to have built and operated a two-tier drainage system to help mitigate the rainy season’s excessive rainfall. Simple but coordinated lines of drainage ditches ran parallel to the rows of houses to divert water from the residential area to a series of ceramic water pipes that carried the water into the surrounding moat, and away from the village.
The team says that this network of pipes shows that the community cooperated with one another to build and maintain this drainage system.
“The discovery of this ceramic water pipe network is remarkable because the people of Pingliangtai were able to build and maintain this advanced water management system with stone age tools and without the organization of a central power structure,” study co-author and University College London archaeologist Yijie Zhuang said in a statement. “This system would have required a significant level of community-wide planning and coordination, and it was all done communally.”
The network is made of interconnecting individual segments which run along roads and walls that divert rainwater. According to the team, it shows an advanced level of central planning and is the oldest complete system discovered in China to date.

The team was also surprised by this find because the Pingliangtai settlement shows little evidence of a social hierarchy. The homes within it were uniformly small and there aren’t any signs of social stratification or significant inequality amongst the population. Digs at the town’s cemetery also didn’t reveal any evidence of a social hierarchy in burials the way excavations at other nearby towns have.
The level of complexity that these pipes demonstrate also undermines some earlier understanding of archaeological finds that believe only a centralized state power could organize and provide the resources for such a complex water management system. Other ancient societies that used advanced water systems tended to have a stronger, more centralized government, but Pingliangtai shows that that centralized power was possibly not always needed.
“Pingliangtai is an extraordinary site. The network of water pipes shows an advanced understanding of engineering and hydrology that was previously only thought possible in more hierarchical societies,” study co-author and Peking University archaeologist Hai Zhang said in a statement.
The ceramic water pipes also show an advanced level of technology for this period in time. Like with Longshan pottery, there was some variety of decoration and styles, but each pipe segment was about 7.8 and 11.8 inches in diameter and about 11.8 to 15.7 inches long. Multiple segments were slotted into one another to transport the water over long distances.
According to the study, the team can’t say specifically how the labor to build this infrastructure was organized and divided. A similar level of communal coordination would also have been necessary to build the earthen walls and moat that surround Pingliangtai.

Willow Song (Yangliu ge 楊柳歌)
The willow tree by the river had boughs of a hundred feet,
its long branches hanging curling to the ground.
The currents rushing and dashing, the roots of the willow in danger,
suddenly it was blown by wind and waves into the river.
How pitiful—the young phoenix in the nest on the willow tree!
Somehow, back then, it was severed from its home.
Once the drifting raft went off, it rose to the Pool of Stars,
and should be taking away the loom-stone of the Weaver.
[Legend has it that as the Han envoy Zhang Qian 張騫 was looking for the source of the Yellow River, his raft arrived at the Heavenly River, and he obtained the stone used by the Weaving Girl, the goddess of weaving to support her loom]
Who would believe that all it needed to shelter several states was only one little southeastern branch?
[In a fragment from Sun Chuo 孙綽's Sunzi 孙子, a man of the mountain tells a man of the sea that a huge tree of the Deng Grove may shelter several states. This couplet refers to the former might of the willow tree and suggests the past power and glory of the Liang.]
The young lord who in the old days made outings at Nanpi,
where can one find him now on the banks of Xuanwu Pond?
A handsome charger galloping toward the northwest,
to left and right the rider arched his bow, shooting at the Yuezhi.
[In these lines Yu Xin alludes to a number of writings by the Cao princes: in one of his letters, Cao Pi 曹丕 (187-226) recalled their outings at Nanpi in the old days; Cao Pi's poem "Written at the Xuanwu Pond" ("Yu Xuanwu pi zuo" 於玄武陂作) begins with the line: "Brothers go on an outing together." Cao Zhi 曹植(192-232)'s "Ballad on the White Horse"("Baima Pian" 白篇) describes the military accomplishments of a chivalrous knight-errant.]
The mudguard patterned with stringed coins got soiled in crossing the brook,
[It was said that the minister Wang Ji 王济's horse had to cross a stream but feared staining the precious mudguard it was wearing.]
and the white jade tablet fell into the mouth of the coiled dragon.
[Emperor Ming of the Jin (r. 322–24), while still a little boy and the crown prince, put his white jade tablet in the open mouth of a bronze coiled dragon; the jade tablet slipped in and could not be recovered. It is likely that the jade tablet powerfully epitomizes the tragic fate of Xiao Gang 萧綱, one of the Liang princes and the poet's "understanding friend"]
New pipes of the phoenix, Xiao Shi had played them;
through the spring window of vermilion bird,
the Jade Maiden was peeping.
[Xiao Shi was the son-in-law of the Duke Mu of Qin. Playing on his panpipes, he summoned a phoenix and rode away with his wife. In Han Wudi gushi 漢武帝故事, Dongfang Shuo 東方朔 was said to have peeped at the Queen Mother of the West through the vermilion bird window.]
The wine goblet containing clouds was made of red agate;
the food vessel of purple glass reflected the sun.
If you think that a man has no ambition,
let me ask you—how did Mount Yan acquire its stone stele?
[The Eastern Han general Dou Xian 窦憲 inscribed his grand victory over the Xiongnu army on a stone stele on the Mount Yanran 燕然]
And yet, what has lasted a hundred years of frost and dew all at once withers,
suddenly one morning, accomplishments and fame are out of reach.
It must be that King Huai had erred in his plan,
recanting for no reason and trusting Zhang Yi.
[King Huai of Chu was duped by the Qin minister Zhang Yi and severed relations with the state of Qi. King Huai later died in Qin.]
Ah, one had better get drunk at the Gaoyang Pond,
coming back at day's end, wearing one's cap upside down.
[Toward the end of the Western Jin, the state was beset with troubles, but Shan Jian 山簡, the governor of Xiangyang, cared only about drinking. He often drank by a scenic local pond, which he referred to as his "Gaoyang Pond," Gaoyang being a reference to the Western Han figure Li Yiji 酈食其, the self-styled "Drunkard of Gaoyang." A song was made about Shan Jian coming home drunk and wearing his cap upside down.]
Who had transplanted the willow from the Wuchang city gate?
[The Eastern Jin general Tao Kan once recognized a willow transplanted from the west city gate of Wuchang.]
How could one still recognize it in front of the Guandu encampment?
[Cao Pi, in the preface to his "Fu on the Willow" ("Liu fu"柳), relates that he had planted a willow at Guandu in 200; now, fifteen years later, the tree had grown a great deal, and "many of my followers had died."]
I alone still remember the days when its catkins were blown around like goose feathers;
today, there are no more silk threads hanging like the green horse-binders.
I would like to leave a song about the willow, a companion piece for "Plum Blossoms,"
[Both "Breaking the Willow Branches"(“Zhe Yangliu” 楊杨柳) and "Plum Blossoms Fall"("Meihua luo" 梅花落) were popular yuefu titles in the Southern Dynasties.]
so as to play the tunes together on a long flute.
Yu Xin(513-581), Chinese poet of the Northern and Southern Dynasties. A friend of the Southern Liang court, he was detained on a mission to the Northern dynasties(Western Wei and Northern Zhou), witnessing the fall of Liang in 557 and never again returned to the South.

The impact of structured light and AI on the future of communication
- By Nuadox Crew -
Structured light, which combines image processing with machine learning, significantly boosts information transmission by increasing data capacity and accuracy.
This method utilizes the spatial dimensions and multiple degrees of freedom of structured light patterns, enabling innovative communication and detection advancements.
The notable features of structured light include its two- and three-dimensional amplitude distribution. This can integrate effectively with image processing technology and achieve cross-medium information transmission through machine learning. Researchers Zilong Zhang and Yijie Shen proposed a method that uses complex mode coherent superposition states and spatial nonlinear conversion to enhance information capacity. By incorporating machine vision and deep learning, they achieved large-angle point-to-multipoint information transmission with a low bit error rate.
In their model, Gaussian beams achieve spatial nonlinear conversion (SNC) via a spatial light modulator, while convolutional neural networks (CNNs) identify the beams' intensity distribution. The study found that the encoding capacity of higher-order Hermite-Gaussian (HG) modes is superior to that of Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) modes, and spatial structured nonlinear conversion significantly improves mode encoding capacity.
To verify encoding and decoding performance, a 50×50-pixel color image was transmitted using 125 HG coherent superposition states, even under phase jitter conditions. Experiments showed that SNC modes can increase data capacity while maintaining low bit error rates, achieving 99.5% data recognition accuracy. Additionally, high-precision decoding was achieved under diffuse reflection conditions using multiple receiving cameras with observation angles up to 70°.

[UNREQUITED LOVE 2021 SPOILERS]
I'm loving it tbh. And I love both the leads. Sheng Huainan is a nerdy cutie pie and Luo Zhi is a nerdy and a confident cutie pie.
These are some of my thoughts up until ep 10.
number 1 being WHY DOES SHE LIE TO HIM ON THEIR DATE WHERE THEY'RE HAVING LUNCH?????? That was so wrong. I can understand that she wanted to lie about the triple chopsticks thing because if she said the reason she would be exposing her crush. BUT she lied to him about her habits as a child? And I know that they were talking about their childhood and it might not be a big thing BUT lying to him just to make him think that she's like her? Or to appease him? Is so wrong. He would definitely like her even if she didn't lie to him about all of this. But I can also understand that she wants to become closer to him. But that's not the right way to do it. I just hope she doesn't do it anymore. I think Huainan would be really sad to know it because all he wants is a person that is in sync with him, but a person that is in sync with him while being themselves, he definitely would not like the fact that she lied. Not to mention that he already was not sure about their relationship because he thought that she did everything on purpose.
2. JUST WHY DOESN'T SHE TELL HIM THAT SHE'S THE GIRL FROM HIS CHILDHOOD MEMORY. I know it means A LOT to her. She has apparently been clinging to the memory for 15 years and it was the start of her crush. But they were children, it is very normal that he forgot most of it. I literally don't remember almost anything of my childhood, except some random moments that make 0 sense *cough*though I don't know if I'm qualified to talk because I can't even remember what I ate this after noon*cough*. Besides, he told her the memory was precious to him and he kept it in his heart. I think that was quite enough to tell him she was the girl from back then. Did she not tell him just to make him think that she also thinks "uncomplete romance is more romantic"? I really hope that wasn't the reason.
3. Why does she feel inferior to him? I don't understand this. She seems to be very confident and her grades are on an equal level as his. She is just as knowledgeable as him, if not more. So why?
4. I know Baili is most probably going to end up with Ge Bi but I really hope she can move on. He doesn't deserve her at all. He's practically been using her all this time. I don't understand why she doesn't want to give up. Maybe it's because their relationship has been like this, has been so one sided since the very beginning. But she really needs to get herself away from him and focus on herself. She just deserves so much better. She can leave a man like Ge Bi to the other girl whose name I don't remember and I don't even care to remember. She compares her relationship with Luo Zhi's crush but they're different. Luo Zhi isn't in a relationship with Huainan. And besides, (I feel a little rude saying this but it has to be said) she should have some dignity and not cling to him when he doesn't care about her at all.
5. I really really dislike that girl with short hair that shout-talks. In the beginning I even found her cute. I didn't dislike her up til she invited Luo Zhi to dinner and made assumptions against her character and talked bad about her. That wasn't alright of her but one could let it pass considering her emotions at the moment. I thought they would end being friends though. My idea died at the end of the ep where she picks up Luo Zhi's diary from the bin (WHY did Luo Zhi even threw it away like that. By the things she had written in it, I would probably burn it before throwing it away or I would hide it somewhere in my room but NEVER throw it in such a public place(maybe I've seen too many dramas lol)) and actually scratched her writing out like that. That's when I realise she is OBSESSED with Huainan. And I know Luo Zhi's crush could be considered as an obsession of some sorts too because she has most probably stalked him around and all. But I REALLY SUPER DUPER UTTERLY EXTREMELY disliked that scene where she purposely throws water on him. Everyone laughs? How could they laugh? It must have been so uncomfortable for Huainan to have a girl sticking to him trying to wipe the water she purposely threw on him. That was soooo not fine of her. I felt uncomfortable through the screen and I cant imagine the character living that multiple times apparently. Also, she's confessed and got rejected if I'm not mistaken? Then girl it's time to back off. He doesn't like you, it's quite simple to understand. Not to talk about that other girl Mingrui has a crush on. She thought Huainan liked her because she thought that he liked her posts on weibo? Is it normal nowadays? Like is a like considered some kind of subtle confession? I really hope not, I really really hope people don't think that irl, just please.
6. I LOOOOOOOOVE Huainan and Mingrui's friendship. They're so cute and understanding of each other and super supportive. By what I'm guessing Mingrui is going to be developed a second lead (there's already some foreshadowing) and that is going to be painful. I really hope I'm guessing utterly wrong here (let me live in an illusion until it doesn't happen). Mingrui is such a good person and he deserves better.
7. I was a little hesitant about all of Huainan behaviour when he found out that Luo Zhi had a crush on him and the way he thought she was lying and all that stuff. He was wrong (until that lunch date at least) because she had never lied to him and a crush is a personal thing, it is Luo Zhi's choice if she wants to reveal it or not. But it was understandable why he was being like that because he had been always approached for various reasons, everyone around him had a motive to be close to him and he was quite tired of being used like that or being liked for his looks. And he thought Luo Zhi was approaching him because of that too.
8. Last thing. WHY, JUST WHY did Luo Zhi not tell him that she was the one who wrote the answer to his question on the wall? Hiding your crush is obviously your choice; hiding the childhood thing, I can understand you to some extent; but this? WHY? why would you hide such a simple thing? I hope the answer to my questions will be revealed slowly.
That's all for now. I really want to make some cutie Huainan gifs but I wanted to use YT because it has high quality but it has not been released there yet so I'm waitiiiiing. As I am waaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiting for the next Eps.
