Today, I release a directory of directories 🥳

This is a one of a kind project and I want to share with you my thought process, why I decided to create it and how it’s different than anything on the market (that I’ve been able to find).

Why would people use it, and what problem does it solve?

Directories are a boring form of business and, by all means, nothing new on the internet.

I remember, and let me age myself now, the hype around Dmoz Directory or the importance of being listed on Yahoo Directory, for a “small” fee of $299 per year!!! Oh, the good ol’ days 😎

Back to current times, I strongly believe we are at the first innings of a comeback of directories.

With the explosions of startups and tools, directories can become a way to navigate the offers and find what you need.

At the same time, a directory it’s useful for startup founders, local and small business owners who need marketing and SEO.

A listing in a directory can be better than a paid article because, besides a backlink from a high authority website, you can benefit from the community a directory has (Hacker News, Product Hunt or Crunchbase come to mind). This comes with users and even customers for your product, while a paid article, while more expensive, lacks the network effect.

I see way too many businesses that could use a boost in their online growth strategy, and listing your business to relevant directories is a cheap (sometimes even free) and efficient way to do that.

The directory I'm launching is businessdirectorysites .com and it lists other directories.

You can browse the directories, select the ones you want, visit them, submit your business listing, and see your SEO improve.

What makes this directory one of a kind, as I said earlier with zero modesty?

You can browse the directories listed on my directory for free without giving your email or registering.

You have full access to over 100 directories now, as MVP (note that not everything works on the website, I'm working on it, but you already have access to the directories)

In 2 weeks, there will be 200 directories listed, and my target is to have 300 directories by the end of September, all curated and with good metrics.

Speaking of metrics, each directory listed in my directory has a page where you can get different info, like website metrics, what is that directory about, what kind of backlink it provides, how to get listed, where will the backlink appear after you submit your information. Preety cool, huh?

In my research before the launch, I was unable to find a product like this, a directory where hundreds of other directories are listed, all accesible without giving your email or paying, all with listed metrics (DA, spamscore) and information about your listing.

If you know a place like that, please share. If not, I think I might have hit the jackpot here 🚀

I don’t want to belittle similar services that ask for your email or your money to give you access to 50 or 100 directories.

My directory will also have paid services. For example, if you want all 300 directories in a CSV file for easier use.

What I wanted to underline is the value that this directory brings, with hundreds of directories listed, with metrics and information available for free.

What’s next?

1️⃣ Will add more directories, as I said my target is 300

2️⃣ Will add more metrics, I'm thinking of having a pdf with each domain, like a domain profile with metrics for each entry.

3️⃣ In the next days, a limited number of users (10) will be able to get early bird offers (>50% off) for related services / products

(like a csv file with all the directories or a featured listing for your own directory if you have one)

People come, you make them a coffee and you tell them, check my directory, we have some cool cupping event next week.

Coffee addicts search your directory to find other cafes they don't know about, the hidden gems because you listed all cafes in all Germany.

Coffee roasters want acces to the events you create and promote in your directory mailing list.

Other coffee shops who are listed want to update their information and contact you.

You contact or get a call from an coffee shop equipment provider (expensive stuff) and they agree to pay you a sponsorship to promote their products.

You now created a community around a directory and are no longer a random barista, you're the man!

Just because you created something as a side hustle.

Think about it:

Don’t miss a thing! New unread activity notifications

We’re making some changes to the activity view on web — starting with unread notifications that will be highlighted blue, as well as multi-colored labels to identify those who you’re closest with.

Why are we doing this?

You may have previously noticed that some activity items were highlighted, and some weren’t. What you may not know is why this was, and you’re not alone.

The previous, light blue highlighting indicated items that were from people you follow. Obvious, right? Well, no, not really. There are design patterns in interfaces that have become standardized from widespread usage to mean a certain thing. Highlighting notifications light blue is one of those that have come to mean “unseen” or “unread.” Which is what it will now mean here, too.

How do I know which are from people I follow?

Good news! We now have colorful labels to identify activity from people you follow. On top of that, we’ve created a new label called “Mutuals” to show people you follow and who follow you back so that you can keep track of those closest to you.
