Here’s something I’m curious about.

Picture this. You’re reading a book, a standard book divided into chapters. Let’s say it’s fiction (don’t know if nonfiction would get different results). You’ve been reading for a while and you want to stop for now. Assume you are not literally falling asleep, you’re still awake and lucid.

You are in the middle of a paragraph, in the middle of a page, somewhere in the middle of a chapter in the middle of the book.

“Power through and finish the book” is not an option, but if you really do that you have my sympathies.

In my mind it takes quite a bit of getting used to before Anya is completely comfortable with Amity. Despite his reclusive nature, Curly is really good with babies, though.

i'm sorry to say but they're both pretty bad at this at first! neither of them has the first clue what to do with babies. anya is, in a way, in a worse position because she can't help comparing minty to her memories of her own early days, and it's hard for her to reconcile why minty can't be reasoned with -- though she does commiserate on the whole 'being in distress and unable to express oneself' thing

one advantage that anya gets over curly is that she is able to spend a lot of time with minty's mother in the weeks/days leading up to her death, and she teaches anya as much as she can

overall, they are both much more inclined to treat children like small adults (for better or for worse, but mostly for better) and are on a much surer footing with minty once she enters toddler stage. while she was still a baby though? only a wet nurse and the eventual communal help saved their asses
