3D model of the A11 Bionic Neural Engine chip to be found in the latest iPhone. It is especially engineerd to hold and train neural networks.

BIONIC NEURAL ENGINE Machine learning is becoming ever more present in our networked presence. Many of these processes are happening on completely abstract levels — even the experts of the field struggle to understand what is actually happening when a machine starts to learn on it’s own. This is where I think artists and designers have a role in using visuals/speculations to expose possible narratives. In my work I have modelled a 3D character called Bob. His parameters are set to be recognised as a criminal gay male by algorithms trained to look for these traits, a process revealed during the film. I want to ask what the traces of a recognition could be, and show the viewer snippets of training processes and recognition interfaces, using the character as a test subject. The layers of the video serve as narrative elements. There is the interface of recognition processes, instructions being given at high rapidity, and the character's own response through subtitles, taken from Facebook's infamous chatbot that generated it’s own cryptic language. Through these I hope to activate the viewer, calibrate their gaze and become part of the looking machine.

x character adjusting his gaze. it is not clear why. he speaks oddly of features and curve formula x a formula is the title of each sequence. this executes deep dreams that outputs adjustments on ears and eyebrows. x the formula is run repeatedly throughout the film and outputs different results based on the current state of the face, which is continuously adjusted. x the spoken words are taken from the google bots that started to create their own language (and was shut down because of this). x the script is created by a new bot trained on my research.

x character is dancing gender fluid dance. machine vision cannot recognise or detect because of duality and movement. this makes him happy. x the dance is an act of protest. It makes him non-detectable. a form of camouflage. character has trained on this based on training sets and lots of practice. x the training sets informs the character how not to be seen. this involves adjusting his face shapes and general gestures. x the training sets drives character to adjust to the standard of the gay face. he asks a lot of questions. x i adjust my character to the standards of the research and enter the machinic gaze to investigate how it recognises him. we see the abstractions of features and gestures. x the character is gaining knowledge as he adjust within the parameters. this is noticeable also in his ability to move. from crawling to dancing. x the character is learning to move. crawling, walking, falling, walking, dancing. like a baby. a lot of questions and you have to push it. x narrative plays out in the black box. hallucinating of eyebrows, grooming styles. while tripping it’s enjoyable to dance. x how is the algorithm actually learning? how does it break up the images and learn to walk? what is the algorithm saying when he’s failing? x the character learns about the world through imagery taken by individuals. how does he experience them? what does the image say about the person and what does he take from it? what would be he’s comments? x what is the story behind that specific angle of eyebrow? Where has it seen that before? What else what in those photos? x as he learns he becomes more human like. How can a machine then spot his nature? touring test? x a touring test done by the character to the viewer. x captcha like touring test. abstract shapes. point at the images containing eyebrows. x what does he like to talk about? how does he describe these abstract shapes he is seeing and hallucinating? he sees eyebrows everywhere. x does he live inside the computer or is he the computer? we enter his eyes as we see the abstraction interface. x he wants to become one that would pass the algorithm detecting gay face?  What does he see in the eigenface (the stereotype) x the hidden layers of the black box contains the secrets of the moves he’s making. he just cannot stop. x the sound os roomstering of a server farm

how to forensically re-present the hidden layers of the black box?
