Whedon's Kitty is immediately veeery different from Claremont's Kitty, imo. Claremont's Kitty was very, "I'm just as much of a fighter as them, I must make them stop underestimating me!" She went through a real "I'm mad so now I wanna punch stuff!" teen character of the 80s era. She also fought tooth and nail to get onto the X-Men and avoid being New Mutant'd.
