I really fucking can't with these "Glinda isn't a bimbo" op-eds. This is a character who says "Why can't you teach us history instead of always harping on the past"? The majority of the play's dialogue is a joke at her expense. If your argument is that she only pretends to be shallow to fit in, congratulations, you drank the amnesia water, are conflating her with Fiyero, and ignoring all the times this character really is just plain ignorant. The fact that she falls ass-backwards into a plot conclusion that vindicates her "popularity-first" worldview, is the result of an ending that was - FRANKLY - a little bit sloppy and didn't think through its own implications. The point of "Popular" is NOOOOOOOTTTTTT that Glinda is RIGHT; it's a persuasive but ultimately cynical and misguided thesis statement the same way "Wonderful" is. The audience is supposed to understand that while it's a well-intentioned gesture, a makeover isn't what Elphaba needs and the advice is kind of bad actually. Elphaba doesn't need to change one bit; what she needs is for someone to take her side, and at a critical juncture, Glinda can't be that for her. The first two hours of the play are a total screed against anyone paralyzed by conformity, and the final 45 minutes contradict that in favor of a happy ending.

And it's FINE! And it's cute, and I love it! But "Glinda is correct to call herself shrewd and acshually she was playing 4-D chess when she decided against running away with Elphaba" is an absolutely baffling interpretation of the text. Like what would have happened if the Wizard COULDN'T have been guilt-tripped into stepping down?! You would have sold your soul and ratted your best friend out to the nazis for no good reason, idiot! Just because Glinda is a successful queen bee in college doesn't mean the script intended to portray her as politically savvy; if that was true, Morrible would have had a WAYYYY harder time manipulating her. She's not the sharpest quill in the drawer, and she's doing what she thinks she has to to hold onto life as she knows it.

I am BEGGING the shippers to stop with this shit. By treating Glinda and Elphaba's story as two equally valid diverging paths, you diminish the bravery of Elphaba's choice to become an enemy of the state, and how painful it was to do that alone. You also bastardize GLINDA'S character arc, by ignoring that cowardice and myopia cause her to function as the antagonist for most of the story, and that only at the 11th hour she starts to grow beyond that. Low key? It's a bit grotesque hearing Tumblrinas talk about how "Harry Potter isn't anti-fascist; Wicked is the superior magical boarding school franchise". And then you enter the fandom and it's a bunch of sapphics yammering on about how trying to change the system from the inside ISN'T a terrible plan, actually!

It is a terrible plan. For the first 66% of the runtime, the play says it's a terrible plan. Glinda was written to be a ditz. Get over it.

I know that Bob is a little freak, but let’s imagine he only knows about these things from reading spicy books.

Okay, John and Bob have been sexting, where John admits he wants to be a submissive bottom for Bob. For him, it’s a way to let go of all the stress and just go numb while being dominated.

The problem is that John has a lot of real experience (with Lemar, Olivia, and others), while Bob doesn’t. Bob gets scared when he doesn’t understand some of John’s requests, or even what John is talking about. For example, when John says he wants Bob to give him a girl name, what? Bob is confused. To him, Johnny or babygirl would be enough. Or when John says he wants to cook for him, be a good girl and let bob use him as a table (? That goes way beyond sex. It’s not just in the bedroom, anyone could see John dressed as a slut with short shorts and just a apron doing those things or walking around with a vibrator that only Bob could control the levels (he has to admit that it is a hot request), he completely freaks out.

Bob’s main issue is that he can’t always tell if John is speaking from fantasy or if he actually wants to do those things.

And the other complication is that John acts like nothing ever happened when they see each other face to face. Partly because 1) he’s been away on missions a lot and 2) he doesn’t want to be out with the the rest, at least not yet.

Poor Bobby, that man is struggling. He thought it would be easy to please the U.S. agent, but it turns out JOHN is the real freak. Bob tries his best to be a good Dom for him, but all he really knows how to do is repeat the things he’s read in books and be a little anxious when he thinks of the moment they will make it for real.
