I was feeling creative today so I came up with concept.  Mashing up celebrity portraits with the patterns and paintings of renowned painters.  Might turn it into a full series...   This pattern is from famed Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.

How To Focus and Work Smarter & How Multitasking Can Make You Dumb
Tumblr media
In this day and age we all have a lot on our mind.  Some of the things occupying space in our brains are important and must of them aren’t.  There are so many distractions that we deal with in our everyday life that hinder our ability to stay focused.  We are being advertised to nonstop and we are hyper connected through devices and social media.  We receive bite-sized portions of information and have abbreviated conversations.  Everything is fast and fragmented and we rarely completely finish a thought before we are moving on to the next thing.  Think about it -  How many phone numbers do you know by heart?  There was a time when we either had to write phone numbers down in a phone book or commit it to memory.  We didn’t realize it at the time, but these things kept our brains sharp and focused.  Today, you can’t dial your mothers phone number without the help of a cell phone.  That’s bad!

Studies have shown that the technology has enabled us to multitask but it also reduces your intelligence.  You’re IQ literally drops because you don’t use brain to figure things out as much. It’s the reason why we make more mistakes and misspell words more often.  And with the invention of text message languages (i.e.  “LOL, OMW” etc) constantly being used all the time, we might lose our ability to spell all together!  I’m being dramatic but you see where I’m going with this. (If you find a misspelling of this post it’ll be proof of this theory.)
If you ask people from generations past what’s one of the main problems with today’s generation, they’d probably say “They are lazy” and then they would probably say, “They have no focus.”  For those brought up in the digital and instant gratification days, its not entirely your fault.  This is the era you came up in so it’s all you know.  But, you should still learn how to focus.  One of trait that almost every success person has is focus.  They see one goal and everything they do or think is in line with accomplishing that goal.

How do you focus?  Like many things in life, it’s the little things that make all the difference.
Don’t check your email so much:
Checking your email or text message every time your phone buzzes can make you dumber.  A psychiatrist at Kings’ College London University found that checking your emails all the time can cause a functional 10 point drop in your IQ points, more than smoking weed!
Take a break from multitasking:
In today’s world, knowing how to multitask is crucial.  The world is shrinking through automation so people have the ability to do more at once.  When multitasking is your brain’s default way of working, you lose the ability to focus and distraction becomes a habit.  You’re basically training your brain to be unfocused.  Turn your attention to one project and submerge yourself in it completely.  Train your brain to start and finish thoughts and projects without any distractions.

Use your time deliberately:
Through the study of thousands of people, David Rock, co-founder of the NeuroLeadership Institute and author of Your Brain at Work , rock discovered that most people are only focused 6 hours a week.  That’s less time than an average work day.  Notice what times of the days you are most focused and take care of your most important business at those times.
 Disconnect:
The thought of being without a phone or some kind of device with connectivity terrifies most people but this can be the best thing for you focus.  Even if its for a few hours a day.  This will allow your brain slow down and recalibrate.  Go for a walk, meditate, exercise.  Anything that will pull you mind out of the vortex of work and put it into the present moment.  When you return to work your mind will be refreshed and sharper.
