in the dark ages of the mid to late 90s, a young brotha who's music taste was developing happened upon the local college station, and heard something pretty cool, but didn't know what it was. he dropped a blank tape into the deck and pressed record. he did this until he graduated high school. Tapes accumulated. There are tons of them, bursting with music that was never quite identified. What to do? Of course, consult the internet.

2025 is completely irredeemable.
but we had Maryland Deathfest.
. . . .I wonder how many videos I'm allowed to post on here.
we'll see.
I only went to Friday and Saturday this year, and I've not been since 2017.
I missed it.
Is it basically tha same just going to the Brooklyn shows on the way? Almost....and I get to sleep in my own bed afterwards. . . .but there's always new people to meet at MDF (even if you keep going every year, unlike me).
The new setup is so perfect, honestly.
It's even better than the old "Sonar with 2 outside stages" setup.
(Sonar is still sitting there for sale to this day, btw. and the diner accross from it is still sitting there empty with the neon sogn lit up).
I saw, in no particular order, Dragged Into Sunlight, Obituary, Arizmenda, Triage, Wormed, 324, Couple Skate, Chepang, Gorgasm, Failure (the powerviolence band from Italy, eh?), Sigh, Razor, Hirax, Father Befouled, Kronos and Asphyx.
shout out Taco Town.
Wormed, Dragged Into Sunlight, 324, Failure, Triage and Gorgasm were my favorite sets.
We'll see if I make it out next year. 🤷🏿
There's only one video allowed each post, and why not a video iI shot of Obituary from the parking lot (where a lot of people were watching). I posted more vids on my instagram (@0vvorldisabombaclaart0)
My bro Corey and I were talking about what it must be like for people on the outside walking around the city and hearing this stuff blasting all day and night, and I said "I guess they know how we feel having to hear shitty EDM everywhere we go".
It's almost like Metalocalypse came true🤣
I'm not sure where else you could do this. It's not happening in NY. Like, the city seems nore behind it than one would expect. It was in the local paper the 4th or 5th year I went.
I dunno what else to say, except, you gotta take your joy when you can because there's less and less opportunity for it.
hopefully everyone made it home safe.
talk to you again.

You ever wonder what would happen if Troops from AFTV started a war metal band????
This is amazing.
I am a metalhead of West Indian descent (St. Lucian father).
I remember finding out Trinidad had a metal scene, and I remember the Jamaican one man black metal project Orisha Shakpana from Soundcloud.
It will never not make me smile to see brothas out here doing HARSH shit. I just needed to talk about it.

This is from the post a couple years ago when i found out Orchid were reuniting, and i was scrollng around looking for a tape i posted and hit this post and i get to this part.
damn.
(I'm 45 now. . . why did i have to make it this long? it's fucking trash.)
damn.
I said that and then Dillinger started playing shows with Dimitri again.
Tumblr media
yeah.
I saw one of 'em.
I wasn't gonna go, and then not one, not two, but THREE friends popped up selling tickets.
it was just meant to be, because you know who opened those shows?
DEADGUY
deadguy, they played a fuckin NEW SONG.
Tim said they have like TEN NEW SONGS.
Tumblr media
...yo, what if Dillinger wrote new songs with Dimitri? what the hell?
The next season of Excized/Anatomized (a podcast i often appear on with the homie Marc from Orion's Sword and the homie Edd from Human Cull) is about Dillinger Escape Plan.
be on the lookout for that.
......and then that part about Mastodon.
Brent just left the band.
Tumblr media
meanwhile, the band I wouldn't have bet 5 cents would ever ever ever come back, is coming back.
ACID BATH
Tumblr media
you mean to tell me they got Dax to be like "yeah, i'll sing those songs again"?
...oh, but you know, Dax said the world is ending (i mean i hope he's right. fuck.)
at this point, it is our duty to somehow manifest an Assuck reunion.
Locust Revival spoke a new Cure album into existence with an album title.
assuck reunion in this bitch.
discordance axis can't happen.

I've been obsessed with the closing track on this album (googander) ever since I saw Thrones open a show at the FU Church (I never remember if it was Atom and His Package or Unwound he played with), went home, looked all over Audiogalaxy and found this 21 minute epic. For a long time it was the only song this long that I liked this much. . . . .I mean I guess it still is. I can't think of a longer one of the top of my head.

time for a new fucking tape . . .but first, a recap of the last three tapes. . .
yeah, now that I'm done with year end lists and for a little while playing shows, let's recap the last couple tapes. . .
the one that sounds like Piebald
the one that sounds like Blonde Redhead
the weird thrashy metal song
and now, a brand new random tape.
this one is sludgy and a bit mathy. It does not seem to have bass, and yet for some reason the only comparison I can think of is Melvins. Weird ass drum beat, skronky guitars, mongo vocals. Who could it be??
. .I had more harsh songs than I thought, kids.
Hopefully post a lot more of these this year. I say that every year. . .but hey. . .

the first great grindcore album of 2025 is here
If you're bummed Jon Chang is officially officially retired (for real this time), have I got something for you.
This sci-fi grindcore band has all the technicality of Gridlink, all the noise and chaos of Discordance Axis and then a little bit of Nasum groove. There's also a sprawling story arc going on with this and all future releases, similar to Wormed.
Read all about it in the link.

I'm over here building a new computer to finish the new 0decathexis0 album on....just so i don't need to try to update windows on the old computer (hint: the old computer CAN'T run 11)
January was a bit barren, except for. . um. . .the continuation of THE METALCORE REVIVAL WE NEED, NOT THE ONE WE DESERVE!
This sorta began last year, honestly.
a few bands dropped some great EPs.
of course they're EPs. This stuff is hard to write. Look how long Architect have been working on a full length.
You see these stupid "djent" bands that drop every other year? That shit is easy to write. Straight up.
You heard that Knocked Loose album?
you know, the one that's like 80% filler?
(they should ONLY do EPs)
...oh, while I'm being controversial, here's a take: EVERYBODY CAN'T BE FROTIERER.
Frontierer, Car Bomb, Sectioned, Fawn Limbs (actually, I haven't seen anyone try to ape them . . because I think most people know they CAN'T) those bands exist. nobody else is gonna pull that off.
you hear all these bands that started doing clean singing one album in? (please don't get me started on the awful precedent Greg Puciato set)
we're not talking about that here.
You saw my ep list for 2024, there were three key releases on there that I am going to speak of right now.
This band are from Jersey. I had mistakenly thought maybe they were from the UK and maybe had members of God Complex, but then about a month after I heard this, God Complex reunited and put out a new song!?!?
This is a throwback for me, a throwback to living in Philly and going to see moshcore bands from that Philly/Jersey vortex. It sounds bleak as fuck too.
you had to know this was gonna come up. total Deadguy worship, the kind nobody even attempts. I couldn't believe this when I heard it. Not even Playing Enemy/Kiss it Goodbye, straight up DEADGUY.
This here takes it back to the days of Tribunal records. You remember Tribunal records?
Scarlet? Killwhitneydead? Prayer for Cleansing? Hyde? From Here On? the only good From Autumn to Ashes release? (ever?)
.... actually, come to find out the label still exists!
This one is slow and bleak and kinda reminds me of the Minor Times and Playing Enemy.
I nearly forgot about this one. They're from Long Island, NY . . .land of Sons of Abraham, VOD, etc. BTW, you're gonna notice a theme here that matches a few bands in this post: CORRECT SNARE
AN AMPWALL LINK! (as many of these as there are, I will post from now on)
another throwback to Tribunal chaotic-core.
lastly, we're dipping into the return of "white belt grind". I have a theory on why this style is coming back. People had to disown Daughters/As the Sun Sets back in like 2021, so they started new bands.
. . .if the young kids are going back in this kind of direction (ie: the hawd shit), mathcore/metalcore will be okay. Even if the_network. don't reunite. . . .
other than that.. . .I don't have a hopeful message for y'all. I"m not the guy for that. Try to breathe. support and enjoy art. g'night.
PS - shoutout Gojira and Kendrick. a glitch in the matrix.

top rekkids of 2024
well now, here it goes.
I always tell people "I'll have my shit in February", and then end up posting at the very end of December or the very beginning of January . . .
so January 11th.
The year is already a lost fucking cause, and I need to distract myself somehow and it just so happens the list is fucking done!!!
first let's do it a little different. here is everything I thought was good last year.
you should be able to click and enlarge like an episode of CSI.
Tumblr media
here go the top 20 EP/demos
Tumblr media
Okay, here we go with the top 40 albums of 2024
2023 was grindcore year, 2024 was probably doom year honestly.
My Dying Bride dropped an album I listened to like twice and forgot it in the avalanche of other stuff that dropped. That wasn't bad at all though. Nor were my people Grey Skies Fallen. Keeping track of things was a bit rough, as I was between streaming services because Spotify changed a bunch of shit and fucked my method up.
These are the 40 I came back to pretty often.
40. Civerous - Maze Envy
39. Twin Tribes - Pendulum
38. Teeth - the Will of Hate
37. Suppression - spiritual sepsis
36. Planes Mistaken for Stars - do you still love me?
35. drive your plow over the bones of the dead - tragedy as catharsis
34. Iniquitous Savagery - Ediface of Vicissitudes
33. Oryx - Primordial Sky
32. Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja
31. Pyrrhon - Exhaust
30. Dreamless Veil - Every Limb of the Flood
29. Prisoner - putrid | obsolete
28. Vulture - sentinels
27. Theurgy - Emanations of Unconscious Luminescence
26. Black Curse - Burning in Celestial Poison
25. Ceremony of SIlence - Hailos
24. Replicant - Infinite Mortality
23. Bloody Knives - Drowning in Light
22. Tzompantli - Beating the Drums of Ancestral Force
21. Shiverboard - Hacksaw Morissette
20. Locust Revival - THE NEW CURE ALBUM
19. Concrete Winds - Concrete Winds
18. Possessive - Rep Ipsa Loquitor
17. Mind Mold - Erosive
16. Shock WIthdrawal - the Dismal Advance
15. VR Sex - Hard Copy
14. Kvadrat - the Horrible Dissonance of Oblivion
13. Dipygus - Dipygus
12. Sick/Tired - Whip Hand Paranoia
11. Ploughshare - Second Wound
10. Chat Pile - Cool World
The only thing this band was missing all this time was a good punchy snare. They got it. You hear some Korn comparisons, because of the big "dumb" catchy riffs. Because their production is still so raw, the "nu" similarities just run right through you. You don't even hear them. You're like "there's no way. come on. don't put that on them.". It's there though . . . more than you realize. More than I realized . . . and they pull it off, so well. No moments like "grimace", but some of us may feel a gut punch from how much they relate to a song like "masc".
09. Theatre's Kiss - Marie/Chronicles of a Needful Being
The best goth/post punk full length release in 2024 if you ask me. It doesn't really sound like any of the other bands in that genre right now. They aren't going for an 80s sound, or any really obvious influence at all. Most importantly, while many of the post punk bands I became obsessed with in 2020 kinda dropped the ball in 2024, Theatre's Kiss did not. Maybe not as metal adjacent as Leidensmelodien, but still amazing.
08. Convulsing - Perdurance
You will find yourself asking "how does he play this stuff?" a few times. Really takes the Virus/Suffering Hour kind of thing and does even more mind blowing shit with it.
07. Spectral Voice - Sparagmos
For those of us who just don't have time for Sunbather 2024 (note how that Blood Incantation album did not make ANY of the lists on this page. . . . ), don't worry, Spectral Voice got you. It was a decent year for doom, but I think SV were always gonna take it with four epic tracks of absolute bleakness and dISEMBOWELMENT post punk leads.
06. Contaminated - Celebratory Beheading
I been waiting a while for the follow up to Final Man, the true classic of the OSDM revival/caveman death metal year. This follow up is more than worthy. Every track is absolutely perfect for when you just want to hit someone with an unprotected chair shot or 6.
05. Cantique Leproux - Le Banissement
I don't even remember how I found this, but we got the best black metal release of 2024 already in March. For an album that isn't super raw, it's so interesting with it's concept and parts that remind me of Memoria Vetusta Blut Aus Nord and that song "rivieres rompues" and THE SOLO in "rivieres rompues". That guitarist just didn't need to go that hard, but he did.
04. Apparition - Disgraced Emanations From a Tranquil State
I can't believe this band has members of Nails in it. This death metal band with a little bit of prog and a LOT of doom . . and all kinds of doom. dISEMBOWELMENT post punk leads, a fucking Katatonia homage part that will have you rewinding like "did y'all mean to do that?".
03. Wormed - Omegon
Don't get me wrong, I love the entire discography of Wormed . . but man . . . it is so good to hear them with a real snare again. So good.
This is the best thing they have released since Quasineutrality. They're back combining that off kilter weirdness and blazing speed and when they get a little experimental on this one the ocuple times they do it that shit is so fucking cool. Literally, Cocteau Twins guitar tone, man. Are you serious? I"m know I'm bias as the guy that has a project combining shoegaze with grindcore but that is a stroke of genius. Also, I hope the new drummer sticks around a long time.
02. Cosmic Putrefaction - Emerald Fires Atop the Farewell Mountains
Simply a beautiful record. A lot of what other bands tried to do this year and failed at, Cosmic Putrefaction succeeded. Of course they succeeded. Cosmic Putrefaction top themselves every record. The right amount of proggy elements, the right amount of experimentation, even the right amount of clean vocals (they sure as hell did better than anyone elses number one album this year. . . ), it doesn't even overstay it's welcome like a few albums did.
01. Knoll - As Spoken
People, this came out in bloody January and was my number one since January.
what?!
I felt like Knoll had begun really combining the Portal sound and vibe with their grind/powerviolence back on Metempiric, but this one it's just become a whole new thing. It feels like something incredibly fucked up is going to happen the whole time you're listening. It fit the mood of the year, honestly and if you've read a lot of my lists you know I'm big on mood. I saw this band at the Subterranean Dissonance Fest in Philly last year, and they got the ONLY mosh pit of the night. The whole night. I'm talking scary violent pit. Car Bomb didn't even get one. It's not even a road rage record like that, but it just kinda captures that power keg vibe where any second something is just gonna burst. At least, that's the feeling it gave me . . . and that brought me back to it the entire year. over and over.
So yes, um. . . . . . . I don't even know how to close it. 2025 is garbage already, and it's even been kinda barren for album announcements.
I don't know how to end this.
so I'm just gonna end it. . . .

This album has been remastered and reuploaded like a DLC.
*sigh* you gotta excuse me
Another tape will be posted this week, dammit.
I was a bit busy with the release of the new -tetsvxshiima- ep "were you denied the concussion blessing"
This is my grindcore tribute to one of the greatest anime series in the history of life, Paranoia Agent.
no getting sucked into a video game
no horny teenagers
no battles won by the power of friendship
just allegory of how badly everyone wants out of this reality.
Satoshi Kon is the king. we pay our homage.

Locust Revival spoke a new Cure album into existence
Of the modern bands I fell for on the great goth deep dive of 2020, this band from Australia have most consistently hit with me.
Plus, depending which album you listen to they have shoegaze tendencies.
The song "civic image" will make you really miss Sonic Youth.
"locust haus" takes me back to hearing Chapterhouse the first time.
and "I.W.T.F.K.Y." reminds me of A Place to Bury Strangers
This is probably the most shoegaze album they've done since the self titled one.
That one.
I should note, Locust Revival was only one member up until a couple years ago. Good Grief was the first full length with the current lineup.
I don't hear enough about this band. They should be bigger.
Granted, i don''t know why they would wanna come out the USA at this point in time, but if they do I'm trying to see 'em.
And yes, they named their album "the new cure album", and then a couple months later, we got a new Cure album.
(which I think is pretty decent, and I'm not even a Cure guy. . . .I'm too aromantic for that band, I think)
so yes, go listen to all of their stuff
(and if you're still on spotify, listen to the playlist the singer made of all Australian post punk bands
. . .i see it's been updated and Publique aren't on it now, since they broke up. so here, listen to them too.

Random Tape #32 repost (oh no, there's a man down)
So, after clearing like 8 songs, I'm feeling froggy.
This was likely posted back when I still had the domain, which means it's gone now.
So here it is again. Back to metal.
This song is fast and thrashy and full of samples. People I've played this for before, said the vocalist sounded like Peter Dolving that used to be in the Haunted.
It's definitely not the Haunted though.
This is another one of those "white whale holy grail" random tapes (sing it everybody!).
Let's see if anyone knows.
