I don't believe I always read to escape the situation I was trapped in. The life I was living. The horrid reality.  I believe the books offered me hope, and a glimpse of normality. That my own life was much more of a bizarre fiction than what any of the protagonists encountered.

shoutout to people who cant/wont turn in their abusers because
they dont have proof of abuse
abusers were upstanding members of society
their abuse was legal
no one believes them
their abusers are old, dead, disabled, ill, or on their deathbed
their abusers are family members
they cant remember details of abuse
they didnt uncover abuse until later in life
they were abused by organizations
they dont know the names of thier abusers
theyve been threatened into staying quiet
they arent mentally stable enough to endure the investigation
and whatever other reason. people dont have to turn in their abusers for their abuse to be legitimate. so many of us cant prove what happened to us and are only left with the disorders that came with the horror we dealt with growing up.
it makes me sad that im seeing so many trauma survivors feel that they have to justify not taking abusers to court. some of us cant, some of us shouldnt, and some of us wont. please respect all survivors regardless of how they approach legal justice over abuse.

You can recognize abusers simply by the fact that they will always demand their feelings to be in the center of everything. Every event, action and word is relevant only by how it made them feel. What they’re doing to you is defined by how they felt while they were doing it, even how you should react becomes defined by how they feel you should.
Being around abusers will make you feel small, your feelings irrelevant, silly, not worth mentioning, even stupid and wrong, because how could you feel something that isn’t convenient to the abuser? How could you stupidly develop your whole inner world of thoughts and emotions when the abuser doesn’t even care that you’re a person? For them it’s almost like you don’t exist, except in the narrow frame of what they want from you.
If you start feeling like you don’t matter, like your thoughts and feelings are out of place, wrong, forbidden to express, that you would only humiliate yourself by speaking your mind, know that this is not normal. No human should make you feel this way. You are equally important as every single human being on this planet, and nobody’s feelings should take up so much space or importance that yours should shrink to make space.

Many survivors struggle to believe the abuse happened. They don’t want to believe it. It’s too painful to think about. They don’t want to accuse…or face the terrible loss involved in realizing “a loved one” hurt them; they don’t want to rock the boat.
