grading fanfic tropes: only one bed or found family ensemble vibes
Only one bed: A — LOVE IT
I simply love the predictability of Only One Bed - it can drive up the anticipation because you, the reader, know what’s coming! The character thinks that they’ll be fine but we know they won’t be! Chefs kiss each time
Found family ensemble vibes: B — LIKE IT
Ensemble can be hard to pull off without reducing the cast to singular traits, but when it’s done well it’s excellent.

yeah I think it's a skillset like any other! the writer has to be able to set up a believable context in which this conversation could be carried out entirely by chat, and the weight of what we know about the characters has to be carry the spaces in between. It can be done but it has to be done skillfully to be pulled off imo
Hey, you write fanfic!

For the above ask game: Chatfic
I admit I'm not super familiar with this one, so I'm not sure if it means:
fic as told through the medium of chat conversations, the modern version of epistolary
or fic that you've plotted out with a pal in chat but never fully fleshed out into a "full" fic
And honestly I'm down for either! Epistolary fic, when down well, is extremely good — although I'll admit the barrier to entry for me on most socmed aus is generally too high. I don't have the energy to follow a single thread that updates over several days/weeks. :(
On the other hand, chatfic as in something that you plot out in chat is generally its own beast — you don't have to do the hard work of show don't tell, you can just SAY what's happening and the reader imagines the rest for themselves. In this way chatfic is imo incredibly viscerally satisfying because the edge details are all automatically filled in. Taking chatfic and turning it into a full fic can be challenging but ultimately rewarding because you're shoring up all those bits that you handwave away in chatfic.
...if neither of those were what you were talking about, I'm afraid I'm going to need more clarification 😅
#as always a skillful author can make or break this trope#i realize now that i completely forgot to assign a letter grade to this trope#so for me it's solidly a: depends on the author but I'll go with you to see what you've got

Give me a fanfiction trope and I’ll grade it:
A: Love it. Spend my time combing AO3 for it.
B: Like it. Not one of my bigger cravings, but it can scratch a certain itch if I’m in the right mood.
C: Neutral. A good author might be able to sell it, but a bad one will kill it deader than dead.
D: Not my favorite. I avoid it if I can, but it won’t necessarily put me off reading something.
F: Hate it. Will immediately make me nope out of a fic.

variations on a theme | 2k | T | Arcane
Pairing: Jayce/Viktor
Tags: No Archive Warnings Apply, Teen, slow dancing, lab era
Summary: Viktor prefers the lab to the socializing that Jayce takes so well to. He does not begrudge Jayce the spotlight; there is always more to discover, and at the lab no one will ask him to dance.

This Better Not Awaken Anything In Me™
I fear we are sliding past that point extremely rapidly
#entropical87#full disclosure i was never in bandom#but I did open unholyverse last night#and while I did say to myself that I could not inflict an 187k wordcount on myself that night#I do have the sensation that the event horizon is closing in on me
