WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL PEACHES AND PLUMS BIG BANG EVENT!

What does that mean?  Well, the short answer is a Magician’s Big Bang.  The longer answer is probably best answered in our Rules and FAQ page.  That’s where you’ll find all the details on what a Big Bang means, at least in this context.  Other fandoms and events may have different interpretations, so please, really, check out the FAQ.

There, now that you’ve done that and have some idea what THIS Big Bang is about, in general terms, we can get into the smaller details.

For our opening we’ve decided to run a Reverse Bang.  There are several reasons for that, most of which fall on the modding side of things, but also because it’s a smaller commitment which makes it great for a starter.  What that actually means is that artists will sign up first.  They will submit between one and two new original works.  Each work will go into a list of works for the event, and then writers will sign up and submit a list of which works they would like to write a 10k+ work inspired by.  Artists and writers will then be paired up based on those selections.  Now, Artists, this doesn’t mean that you can’t submit more art for your writer's work, if you so choose, but it isn’t required.  Just the original work, which can be tweaked with the writer's work if so desired, but again, isn’t required.  You could technically be done once your art is submitted to the selection pool.  It is lovely community, though, to be around for your writer to at the very least toss some ideas at, or pick your brain about your artwork.  And just to chat with other creators in general.

Writers, your job, once you’ve been given a partner, is to create a fic inspired by that piece of art.  For a Reverse Bang we’ve lowered the required word count to a 10k minimum, which is a large part of why we decided to start with a Reverse Bang.  Something a little smaller to let everyone get the feel for the event.

We will set up lines of communication between each set of partners for this event, be that email or discord.  So please be prepared to offer up one if not both of those methods of communication for your partner.

Magicians Fanworks Event, Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025

Welcome Home!

We’re welcoming fanworks of all types celebrating The Magicians (Lev Grossman/SyFy). This low-key challenge focuses on a series of weekly entries, open to both new works and additional chapters to existing WIPs, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9, 2025, Eastern time.

The overall theme for the entire event is Welcome Home!

If you would like to create something for the general “Welcome Home!” theme, these are welcome anytime while the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9!

In addition, here are the weekly themes. If you miss your week, you’ve got a second chance during Week 6, our Free Space/Catch-Up week!

Want to continue an existing WIP but it doesn’t match any of our themes? Send it during Week 6!

All types of fanworks are welcome! Yes, yes, yes to fic, art, edits, vids, cosplay, crafting, podfic, fanmixes, pinboards, moodboards, and more! Any number of submissions you like. You can even send us multiple chapters of the same work as separate entries, for different themes or the same theme! Please let us know which theme you chose, and make sure your work either:

1. Fits the overall event theme (send anytime Jan. 27-Mar. 9), or:

2. Fits a specific week’s theme (send during that week, or in Week 6)

Exception: New additions to existing WIPs that don’t match a themeare welcome in Week 6.

WEEK 1: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, Home—What constitutes “home” to the characters? What do they think of “home,” good or bad?

WEEK 2: Feb. 3-9, "It's been a long time"—It could be a long time since characters saw each other, or a long time engaged on a task like the mosaic. Special note: The 7th anniversary of The Magicians 3x05, “A Life in the Day,” is Feb. 7. We’d love to see Mosaic Fic.

WEEK 3: Feb. 10-16, Seasonal/holiday—Whether or not it’s the current season/holiday right now (any are welcome). This could include “vibes” or “ambiance” for the readers to enjoy in connection with a particular holiday (haunted house for Halloween; romance for Valentine’s Day—which falls this week). If the season or holiday is not specifically referenced in the content, please let us know which one it is.

WEEK 4: Feb. 17-23, Magical creature—A being from the show or books, or from mythology/folklore, or one you make up.

WEEK 5: Feb. 24-Mar. 2, Returning after absence (or returning to being themselves).

WEEK 6: Mar. 3-9, Free space/catch-up week! If you are catching up for a prior week, please let us know which one. If you’re adding to an existing WIP that doesn’t match any theme, it belongs here.

Remember—any works for the general “Welcome Home” theme may be sent any time the event is open, from Jan. 27-Mar. 9. However, please let us know if you are following the overall event theme rather than that week’s theme.

The last day for challenge entries on Tumblr and/or AO3 will be March 9 at 11:59 PM Eastern.

i love how there's the genre of fix-it fic where the author goes into great granular detail of how our heroes manage to avoid or undo whatever character death or other unpopular choice occurred, in a way that abides by the laws of the fictional universe and definitely required a substantial plot outline, and then there are fix-it fics where the author just went "that's bullshit and didn't happen," and we as readers all go "agreed. carry on."

when u spent years and years listening to ur husband’s gentle voice as he read children’s stories to ur son and u were always a better more dramatic reader plus he never did the voices but u loved listening to him anyway and then ur son grew up and ur husband read to ur grandkids, same favorite books, same gentle practiced cadence, and then u both got super old and then u DIED!!!!!, and then it turned out it was all in an alternate reality but u still remember it and it haunts u every day and now for the first time since that distant other life ur husband is reading a children’s story aloud in his careful middle-school-play voice and u wanna cry but ur best friend keeps interrRUPTING

Lol awkward queliot hug pic makes me want more mosaic stories that really hammer in that the kiss didn't happen until a year in, that the two of them spent a whole year together in a shack in the woods, trying to solve a really frustrating puzzle, in each other's faces every day, (not fucking!), and probably irritating the shit out of each other in the way you only can when you see someone all day every day, I wanna hear about the stupid annoying habits, like Quentin grinds his teeth when he sleeps and always forgets to clean up the kitchen when it's his turn to cook and leaves flour everywhere, and Eliot takes stupidly long baths even when they've got stuff to do later and makes a weird dying goose noise whenever he blows his nose, and the fact that they were still hot for each other after a year of that is the actual proof that love is real
