Cantopop star, 1970s idol in Japan and writer Agnes Meiling Kaneko Chan (陳美齡) spoke about the need to overcome societal conflicts and clear up misunderstanding to recreate the kind of good neighbourliness demonstrated in the 2015 Japan-Turkish coproduction “125 Years Memory”, which was screened prior to her talk at the Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium of the Open University of Hong Kong’s Hong Kong Jockey Club Campus. 125 Years Memory, released in December 2015, is a dramatic depiction of two historical incidents that deepened the friendship between Japan and Turkey: The sinking of the Turkish frigate Ertuğrul off the Japanese coast in 1890, and the evacuation of Japanese nationals from Tehran in 1985. Directed by Mitsutoshi Tanaka and written by Eriko Komatsu, the film was given institutional support by Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the screening at OUHK was organised by the Japanese Consulate General in Hong Kong. Chan rose to fame as a "foreign television personality" (gaijin tarento) in the 1970s before taking up studies in psychology in the Jesuit-run Sophia University in Tokyo and earning a Doctor of Philosophy in Stanford University. She is also known to have been a professor at Japanese universities, an essayist and a novelist. Last night I went to see stand-up comedy live for the first time in my life, where nine comedians out of 13 entries from around the world performed at best of the Hong Kong International Comedy Festival at Cyberport 3. Opening night of Puccini’s Turandot staged tonight by Opera Hong Kong (OHK) and the New York City Opera at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Hall, with the role of the eponymous Princess of China sung by Ukrainian soprano Oksana Dyka, Korean tenor Alfred Kim as Prince Calàf and Italian soprano Valeria Sepe as the slave girl Liù. The grotty, run-down Seaside Mansion that follows the curved Pan Hoi Street (濱海街) near Quarry Bay MTR contrasts with the postmodern steel-and-glass skyscraper One Island East in neighboring Tai Koo Shing, a newish district that Swire is trying to establish as SoHo/Lan Kwai Fung East on the eastern part of Hong Kong Island’s northern coast. There’s very little sign of gentrification and this contrasting scene along this narrow street provide a perfect example of typical Blade Runner-style Hong Kong flavour that retains a certain local authenticity despite rapid development.
