Cityplace, Taikoo Shing

I rarely go past the “Tin Hau” stop on the MTR but the price was right for a showing of Black Panther at the Broadway “Movie Movie” Cinema in Taikoo Shing so off I went.

According to Wikipedia, Taikoo Shing is a residential and retail area in Quarry Bay. To be honest, I didn’t really need Wikipedia to tell me that—from the MTR, it seems like all the exits point to a mall or an apartment building (one of which was amusingly named “The Floridian.” I wondered how much a room in that Floridian costs to rent compared to the actual Floridian apartments I’d once had to rent in college…). I went into CityPlace which was exit E.

This mall is enormous! It took me a few minutes to feel situated and figure out the cinema was on the fifth floor…and to figure out which escalators actually went up there. [Side-note- the theater was really nice! Very large, comfy chairs. Would definitely recommend were this a movie theater reviewing blog.]

After my movie was done, I wanted a snack. I was going to head down into the basement where there was a food court, but on the third floor, I was sidetracked by a cafe called Passion which had tasty-looking salads for a surprisingly reasonable price. Tack on the fact that it had a sort of comfy couch and the whole mall had unlimited wifi in exchange for an email address, and I plopped right down and my myself at home for the afternoon.

As luck would have it, I looked to my left from the sofa, and there was the bathroom! So here’s my review:

Accessibility:

Everything in this mall seems sort of hard to find since it’s so big and the escalators aren’t really lined up all in the same place. In addition, like in a lot of malls, it’s down a long-ish corridor that’s sometimes disorienting when you want to make your way back to the mall. But, the bathroom I’m reviewing has a pretty good location so that all the restaurants that are around it can access it pretty easily. Plus, the mens’ and womens’ rooms are both together so that’s like an extra little bump in my book. I give it. 3/5

Approachability:

The bathroom is really nice-looking. It has light brown faux-wood stall doors and a cool brownish metal tiling. Everything is clean and there was a bathroom attendant when I was in there. The only downside is that the space is a little tight and the layout was awkward. There was a storage closet stuck in between the stalls which was was weird. 4/5

Availability:

Like I mentioned, it was a tight space so there were only three stalls. Not great availability in a mall this big, especially considering that it’s meant to serve patrons from four somewhat large restaurants. 2/5

Appliances:

The toilets were pretty typical but they had a cool automatic flushing mechanism I’d never seen before. The sensor was off to the side and you waved at it to make it flush so there was no accidental flushing. The toilets also had sanitizer spray which I always like to use. The sinks were fine but they had the annoying “under the mirror” soap which is pretty popular in bathrooms here. It’s nice aesthetically but always feels like a gamble when I stick my hand under because I don’t know where the dispenser actually is or if the automatic sensor has recognized my hand. There were paper towels and a hand drier that you can stick your hands into rather than under. 4/5

Overall

Overall, I would probably recommend this bathroom even though the score does seem a little low. Even though I had a pleasant experience, I visited in the early afternoon in the middle of the week. I think that if the mall were any more crowded, the quality of this bathroom will fall exponentially.

6/15/17 in Hong Kong:

Yesterday was incredibly lazy. I woke up late and literally just existed for a couple of hours and then took a nap. After three weeks of constant travel, friends, interacting with new/old people and places I told myself that I deserved a day to sloth. And maybe it’s what I needed and I framed it as rest but I think it was maybe the pinnacle of just being bleh and not doing anything to fix it. Feeding my brain with mindless Youtube videos of James Corden Carpool Karaoke and downloading Piano Tiles was the ultimate avoidance of anything productive. Not that those things are bad, just probably not good for me in the right now. Not my favorite kind of day.

Today was a little different. Not a 180, but different from yesterday is an improvement. Walked around Taikooshing, bought some gifts for friends, listened to the entire You Make Me Brave album, and bought egg waffle on the way back home. What makes this simple day good:

1. I’m not great at gift-giving and it’s hard to appreciate physical things as an expression of love but gifts are important to some people and therefore, it should be a discipline that I moderately exercise. 2. Even without band and a congregation, worship through music is something that I enjoy and I’m thankful that the Bethel women led me worship in the quietness of my own heart. 3. The everything-is-meaningless mindset has led me to deny the simplest pleasures because life feels like trash. If buying fresh egg waffle from the little store under the bridge for $15HKD is going to the make the human experience a little bit more pleasurable, just buy the freakin’ egg waffle.

This list of three is so small but I take great victory. I scrolled through old posts and saw that i wrote oftentimes when I was on a peak, when life felt wrapped up nicely. I don’t feel like that. Not at all. In fact, the complete opposite. So let’s write during these times too.

Today my aunt got a haircut. After coming back from Taikooshing, it was the first thing I commented on. “You got a haircut! It looks nice!” My uncle comes home and we have dinner. As my aunt is cleaning up and he’s sitting on the couch relaxing after a long work day, I realize that he didn’t say a word about it. Did he not notice it? It’s a pretty noticeable haircut. Like, three inches off. Is there a point in marriage where even noticing the little things becomes obsolete? I also realize that even when we eat together, my aunt, my uncle, and myself, we pray separately before our meal. The television is on in the background and in total, about 7 sentences were exchanged as we ate.

I don’t want that. I’m not sure what marriage or companionship realistically looks like and even in the short time since March 26th, my romanticized misconceptions are cracking one by one but I don’t want this. When the obvious goes unsaid that even a simple, “your haircut looks nice” is forgotten. Before long, it’s not just “your haircut looks nice” that are gone but the “i love yous” too. I don’t want us just to exist in the same space together but I want you to know that I choose to be with you. Let’s just remind each other how we feel about one another more often. In other news, I opened my Bible today for the first time in a while. Paul’s having a hard time in Acts. It’s hard to stay focused. I miss praying. I miss the labor of praying. Going to try some extended prayer tonight before I sleep.
