German phrases and idioms.

A big marker of multilingual people are often the direct translations of idioms and phrases that cannot be literally translated into English. As such, this may be helpful for anyone roleplaying Nevarran / Anderfels muses (or German-speaking muses, idc)

You're free to like and reblog, but please do not add to it—especially in other languages. I will make separate posts on this and might follow up on this one. The following are in no particular order and are from several German-speaking countries.

"The last shirt has no pockets". (Das letzte Hemd hat keine Taschen.) The last shirt is the shroud, as the shroud is literally a "dead man's shirt", meaning you won't be able to take anything with you once you die.

"You're shaking the slapping tree" (Du rüttelst am Ohrfeigenbaum) You're about to get slapped if you go on like this.

"The music is playing here!" (Hier spielt die Musik!) Pay attention (to me)

"No dick is as hard as life" (Kein Schwanz ist so hart wie das Leben) You get the meaning.

"(I) Have the honour!" (Hab' die Ehre) / "Ich empfehle mich" (I recommend myself) Something you'd say when you're saying goodbye

"talking around the hot porridge" (Um den heißen Brei reden) Talking about an issue without naming it directly, avoiding the subject.

"This does not fit a cow's skin" (Dat geet op keng Kouhaut) This is outrageous.

"You have no idea about tooting and blowing!" (Du hast von Tuten und Blasen keine Ahnung) You don't know anything.

"I'll lie on my innards / tripes for a bit" (Ech léeë mech op d'Träip) I'll have a little nap

"Beautiful feathers make beautiful birds" (Schéi Fiedere maache schéi Vullen) Nice clothing makes you look pretty

"washed with every water" (Mit allen Wassern gewaschen) Been through / seen it all

"What I don't know doesn't make me hot" (Was ich nicht weiß, macht mich nicht heiß) I don't care about what I don't know

"cold coffee" (Kale Kaffi) Old news

"Everything has an end, only the sausage has two" (Alles hat in Ende, nur die Wurst hat zwei) Nothing lasts forever.

"wanting an extra/special sausage" (Eine Extrawurst verlangen) wanting special treatment

"Everything's in butter" (Alles in Butter) All's good.

"Butter with the fish" (Butter bei die Fische) Cut to the chase, be honest.

"It's jacket like trousers" (Es ist Jacke wie Hose) It doesn't matter.

"You already saw horses throwing up" (Man hat schon Pferde kotzen sehen) Crazier/worse things have happened.

"It's the yolk (literally: the yellow) from the egg." (Es ist das Gelbe vom Ei) It's the absolute best - the bee's knees. Coincidentally, "this is not the yellow from the egg" is a big meme in Germany.

It was quite hard to shift from being quite giggly and laughing a lot towards a face that showed no emotion; Alys had always been a fairly happy and sociable girl, but having her whole family in one fell swoop was enough to eradicate every desire to be human again for a long time. 

Alys disconnected herself from every emotion and interpersonal relationship because she, on one hand, only wanted to become and remain a vessel for vengeance and victory. She had been recruited into the Grey Wardens because of the looming Blight, but a focus for her always remained vengeance. She wanted to see Howe dead, deal with the Blight in whatever way, and then just wanted it to be over. I wouldn’t say per se that she was suicidal, at least not actively. She suffered (and suffers) from Survivor’s Guilt a lot, and this shifts her entire personality. She wouldn’t know what was to happen after the Blight if she survived; she always held the hope that Fergus was alive and he would be the Teyrn. She didn’t... expect life to continue after the Blight.

Enter the companions. Alys tried to be detached from them, merely be the Warden they expected of her, and at the beginning, aside from general questions about logistics, the Wardens, the treaties, and opinions on how they should continue. She was even standoffish at first; she didn’t want to consider that there could be a friendship that developed or more. - because it would make her vulnerable again, it would make her lose focus, and fully expecting that they would die before her - as the Maker seemed to be cruel like that - she didn’t want her heart to be broken again. She often returned to her tent quickly and didn’t spend much time socialising - aside from her Mabari, who had to accept her frequent hugs. 

She only very slowly showed affection for her companions afterwards, mostly with little gifts and trinkets she found in chests or during markets, saying those reminded her of them, but never stayed for more than a Thank you. She was accepted to be this weird little thing who seemed to be a great leader and impeccable fighter, but not more. The first person she told about the death of her family was Wynne - more because it was a mention and the mage put two and two together. And when they ascended the Temple, well - not much hiding there anymore. 

Alys wasn’t to break at any moment - but when she did, the flood came.
