Sonic Mania Review – A Special Zone
Game Review
For people who grew up with the Sega Genesis, hearing the old-timey “SEEEGAAAA” crackle through my speakers as I launched Sonic Mania was enough to put a smile on my face. Developed by Headcannon and PagodaWest Games, Sonic Mania is only licensed and published by Sonic Team; effectively rendering it as a title made by the fans.
Like many hit-or-miss spiritual successors of classic gaming properties such as Sonic 4, it can prove harder than you’d imagine to faithfully capture that childlike zeal and still create new gameplay concepts throughout the entire duration. At this, Sonic Mania deftly succeeds by using the years of classic gameplay as a foundation, building and soaring even higher than before.

n3rdabl3’s Evo 2017 Wrap Up – Part 1: The Floor
Article
The Evolution Championship Series (hereby referred to as Evo) is the largest, most prestigious fighting game tournament in the world, as the commercials would tell you. So would the stream overlays of any of the official broadcasts, the event website, passersby at the venue, and so much more. Having been running under the Evo banner for over a decade, and at its core been operating for twice that period of time, Evo is a view into the most core aspect of competitive gaming. The knowledge that anyone can sign up, anyone can pick up a fightstick, and anyone can take a game off the pros; if they’re good enough, is what has elevated Evo to where it is today.
But this is 2017 now. The era of Eleague pulling over one million concurrent viewers to a CS:GO stream, the era of Dota 2’s The International 6 touted a prize pool of $20 million, and as many would put it more colloquially, the era of esports. How has the Olympics of the FGC grown, and how does it stack up the modern age of events? Is Evo the last of a dying breed, or is it stronger than ever?

Dead Cells Preview – Roguelite done Right
Game Preview
Roguelikes (or what is more common nowadays, the Roguelite) can be a difficult game to balance player enjoyment around. Giving players some tangible, long-lasting feedback and feel like they are truly progressing sounds next to impossible in a game which erases your progress the instant your HP hits zero.
Titles such as Rogue Legacy have attempted to do such by accumulating money during runs to buy upgrades to increase your chances each run, but the dilemma here is the game becoming too much of a grind and less a test of your game knowledge. If you do pathetic damage to every late-game enemy unless it is your 100th run, why bother making a serious attempt any sooner?

Baby Driver Review – Time to Face the Music
Movie Review
You can tell a lot about a film from its opening shot. What it chooses to show, what it leaves out, and more. We see an average day, a street corner, a bank. Then the wheels roll up and fill the screen as the opening notes of Bellbottoms by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion starts to play. This is a film not so much about the job, about the heist, as it is about the momentum, and the groove. As our mobster bank-robbers roll out of the vehicle, rifles and shotguns in tow, as the action starts, we don’t watch the stakes at play, we don’t watch them make off with the perfect crime, instead we sit in the car and jam away with our protagonist, Baby (Ansel Elgort).
Baby Driver is a crime thriller with a heart of gold, this heart belonging to the titular driver himself. Since an accident as a child left Baby with tinnitus, and some serious scars both physically and emotionally. To remedy this, he is perpetually listening to a wide pantheon of playlists and songs (he has a different iPod for different moods) and we see the world from his view in every meaning. The entire film is on rhythm, every footstep, every pencil tap, every interjection, follows the beat of the songs playing in Baby’s ears. What follows is in effect a one hour and 53 minute long music video, and it is captivating from start to finish purely from a film-making standpoint, let alone the plot, characters, action, and oh so much more.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: The Master Trials Review
Game Expansion Review
This week saw the first release of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild‘s Expansion Pass: The Master Trials. This first content pack besets us upon Hyrule once again in search of several interesting new items, a hefty helping of cosmetic attire, and the main attractions: Trial of the Sword, which sees you delving deep into a sequence of challenges testing your mettle, and Master Mode, for the inner sadomasochist adventurer. All of this is well and good, but is it worth the asking price for the Expansion Pass?
Right off the bat: it becomes immediately clear that everything that is NOT The Trial of the Sword and Master Mode is but icing on the cake; little shiny collectibles to bide your time. The Korok Mask is a godsend if you have any dream of collection all 900 of the Korok Seeds, and the Travel Medallion has some use if you want to revisit your favorite woodland camping spot, but that’s about it. Dressing up as Tingle or wearing Midna’s helmet is cute and all until you start taking fatty damage from everything looking at you sideways and go back to wearing your powered up gear because you’re not suicidal. This is especially true when playing on the brutal Master Mode.

Skeleton Boomerang is Frenetic, Old-School, Side-Scrolling Action
News Piece
If you’re one of the many souls pining for more tight, mechanical, and difficult games from the days when you strained your eyes staring at that CRT in the dead of the night, you might want to keep your eyes on Skeleton Warrior from ANIM●ACE.
The premise is as eccentric as the chiptune soundtrack and wack visuals might lead you to believe: you arrive on an island on the quest to lay the smackdown on an evil voodoo lord and his army of skeletons. Your quest leads to you jumping across rooftops, riding snowmobiles, tearing apart skeleton foes, engaging with exhumed jurassic beasts, and sailing the depths of space because I’ll be damned if I let those skeletons lay claim to the stars. You are one man with one mission and one boomerang.
