I’m Your Hucklberry
Val Kilmer, star of Batman, The Doors, Top Gun, Tombstone and more, has died. The family said it was from complications related to pneumonia. He was previously diagnosed with throat cancer. I first remember him from the hilarious 80s flick, “Top Secret!” He was often spotted out and about and on social media with his various dogs, including his Frenchie, Penny. Val Kilmer 1959-2025

Most Pup-ular
You probably know the the German Shepherd holds wins place in our heart here, but AKC says another breed holds the title of most popular dog breed in America. In recent years, the feisty French Bulldog has climbed from near obscurity to capture the top spot. Photo by Pixabay on Pexels.com Golden Retrievers hold the top spot regionally for us here in the PNW, according to the stats. If you’re…

Poison Purina?
We’ve all seen the load of BS that streams out into the world from social media. From ice bucket challenges that purport to raise money for charity to ridiculously dangerous things like tide pod eating and the choking game, these quick hits spread through our pop culture like wildfire through an unswept forest floor. A current fire spreading mostly from one facebook group is about pets dying due…

Losing a Friend
Tragic news. Matthew Perry, most famously known for his role of Chandler Bing in “Friends,” has died. Initial reports say it appears he drowned. He was frequently spotted with his pup, Alfred. The actor recently released and toured for his autobiography. In it, he spoke about his battles with addiction and his efforts at recovery. Matthew Perry 1969-2023

Buyer Beware
Dogs can provide invaluable services to people with a vast array of issues, from physical disabilities to PTSD to emotional insecurities. Many of these dogs are highly trained and specially bred to help in their specialized field of support. It can take from several months to years to properly train a service dog. This leads to many disreputable “trainers” taking advantage of people looking for…

Summer Reading
Summer is right around the corner. Hopefully, you have some beach time (or mountain time, or camping time) penciled in somewhere. While swimming, boating, and hiking are all good ways to spend your summer break, so is reading, and I have a recommendation for you. One of my favorite authors, Stephen King, has a new book on the shelves, titled “Fairy Tale.” Take a look at that cover. It is a…

K9 Ban Bill
A proposed bill making its way through the California Assembly would ban the use of police k9s for arrests and crowd control in the Golden State. Two lawmakers introduced the measure which they say will “end a deeply racialized and harmful practice that has been a mainstay in America’s history of racial bias and violence against Black Americans and people of color.” You can read more about…

The Power of Positive
So, I have been a bit behind in some of my blog reading and just got around to a wonderful column by dog aggression expert, Jim Crosby.  For those of you not familiar with Mr. Crosby, he is one of the leading experts in dog bite and aggression, serving as an expert witness in numerous cases. He also has a background in training and working with police k9s, which makes his whole-hearted support of…

Unsung Hero
About a decade ago, as a fledgling professional trainer, I went to a training seminar that forever altered the way I thought about dogs. After that weekend of listening to John Rogerson talk not about training dogs, but communicating with dogs, and maybe more importantly letting them communicate with us, I began to rethink my training style and it has been a linchpin in my approach ever…

This Stinks
This weekend Bacchus and I took part in our first NW1 trial competing in the sport of nosework. For those unfamiliar, nosework is a sport where a dog goes through certain scenarios in an effort to find a target odor. NACSW (National Association of Canine Scent Work) is one of several organizations that offer titles in this exciting sport.  In the NW1, a dog must find a hidden odor in all four…

The Important Questions
Tyler Childers has a new album out and I am glad it tackles the kind of tough theological questions that I ponder regularly.
