Is Air Duct Cleaning Worth It?
Having an acute knowledge of the duct and HVAC system is critical these days. Not only will this make you a more informed homeowner, but it will prevent you from getting ripped off. This is especially true when it comes to duct cleanings.
There is a good chance that you have heard of duct cleanings. In fact, you have probably been getting hounded by numerous duct cleanings ads. So, what’s the real deal? Are duct cleanings really worth the money?
What Do The Studies Say?
The real truth of the matter is that there has never been any actual proof that shows that duct cleanings can prevent health problems. Studies also are not able to demonstrate that dust levels in the home are due to dirty ducts. Yes, ducts will accumulate dust over time, but much of the dirt that lives in the duct system simply just adheres to the duct’s surface and doesn’t necessarily get introduced into the living space.
Why Clean Air Duct System? check it out
Mold Is Always A Factor
From what you read above it probably sounds like duct cleanings are a complete rip off. Well, that is not entirely true. Duct cleanings can be very beneficial in certain situations. First and foremost, you need to understand that ductwork and the HVAC system itself are breeding grounds for mold. Mold is very real and can be extremely dangerous. When mold builds up in the ductwork and HVAC system its spores are being discharged throughout the home every time the unit kicks on. If your system is full of mold them a duct cleaning will certainly be worth the money.
Can Improve Efficiency
You learned above that most of the dust in the duct system just clings to the duct’s surface. Yes, this prevents the dust from entering the living space, but it doesn’t mean that the dust doesn’t restrict the airflow. A duct cleaning can lower the overall cost of your utility bills.

Step By Step Guide To Dryer Lint Cleaning
Not properly taking care of your dryer and vent can cause several unique and dangerous problems.
First, clogged up vents and eventually lead to fires and CO poisoning. This is probably the most obvious problems, but most people don’t know that not properly maintaining the dryer and dryer vent can lead to longer drying times, more wear and tear on the dryer, and even shrunken clothes. In addition to this, it will drive up those utility bills. Sure, no one wants to bear the expense of hiring a professional company to do the job. Well, with the following guide, you won’t have to.
Empty The Lint Screen
You probably already know that you need to empty the lint screen every time you use the dryer. Well, when you are performing a cleaning this is where you will want to start as well. It doesn’t matter if you have recently cleaned the screen or not. You will want to clean it again and well as taking a vacuum cleaner and cleaning inside the dryer as far as possible.
Cleaning The Dryer Vent
Even if you are emptying the lint trap every time you use the dryer it doesn’t mean that some lint won’t escape the trap and get into the duct. Left unchecked, this lint can slowly snowball and pose a real fire hazard. This is why it is crucial to attack the vent at least once every few months. click here for more about How Vent Cleaning for Your Dryer Can Prevent Fires
You can do this by purchasing a vent cleaning kit at your local hardware store. Simply pull the dryer away from the wall and remove the vent from the dryer. Now, take the brush and run in down the vent in a twisting motion. There will be some tough spots because the vent likely snakes around corners and elbows, but with a twisting motion, you should have a problem reaching the entirety of the vent.
Clean The Moisture Sensor
When most people clean their dryer vents they forget about the moisture sensor. This sensor is located just underneath the door and it used to shut off the machine when clothes are dry. Over time the sensor can get covered with film and cause the dryer to not know when the laundry is dry. Cleaning the sensor with a cotton ball and rubbing alcohol will do the trick.
Clean The Exhaust Opening
The exhaust is also another item that is often overlooked. This is where the dryer vent protrudes the home. This is usually located on the side of the home or on the roof. You will want to make sure that it is free of lint or bird’s nests.

Dryer Duct Cleaning Could Prevent Fires
You just learned that not cleaning your dryer vents could be a huge fire hazard. In fact, you might be surprised to learn that nearly 15,000 structural fires occur each year as a result of clogged or dirty dryer vents. This is due to the fact that dryer operates at extremely high temperatures and every time they run they produce lint.
This lint is highly flammable and if it builds up inside the dryer exhaust it can easily catch fire. If there is quite a bit of lint in the exhaust then it won’t take long before the whole home goes up in flames.

Clean Dryer Vents To Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Professional Service Can Prevent Wear And Tear On The Dryer
When you are dealing with a dirty dryer duct or clogged dryer it can take as many as two or three cycles to get the clothes completely dry. This is putting a lot of extra strain on the dryer. Eventually, this will lead to excessive wear and tear that will break down the dryer faster than normal. for more about dryer vent cleaning Houston TX check this link

HVAC Ducts And Vents Definition
If you have a central heating and air system this means that you also have a lot of ducts running through the home. These ducts are oftentimes disregarded by many homeowners, but they are an intricate part of the HVAC system.
Without the ducts, your furnace or air handler simply would not be able to properly discharge the air in the home to keep it temperature cooled or heated. However, this system is much more than a highway for air. In order for air to properly heat and cool the home, it has to be circulated throughout the home. And, proper circulation of this air will require the use of multiple vents like the supply vents and the return vents.
Understanding The Trunk Line
The first thing that you need to know about the duct system is that the main route of travel is the trunk line. This will be the biggest part of the system and this is how the air travels from the furnace or air handler to the ducts and vents. The trunk line will start out with a large duct and decrease down every 15 feet or so. This allows the airflow to gain velocity the further it travels.
Understanding The Ducts
Once the air enters the trunk line it has to get to vents in the home. It does this by traveling through the ducts. These ducts are much smaller than the trunk line. In fact, they are usually only 6 to 8 inches in diameter whereas some trunk lines can start out as large as 16 inches. These ducts will be attached to the side of the trunk line and they are responsible for introducing the air into the home through the vents.

Understanding The Vents
The vents in the home are simply the outlets that are either installed in the floor, wall, or ceiling. Some of these vents will force out air while others suck in air. Forced air vents are known as supply vents and the vents that suck in the air are known as return vents.

Inspect Your Air Ducts
When most people think about their heating and air systems they simply don’t think about the ductwork they only just think about the unit itself. Well, this is a huge mistake because the ductwork is an integral part of your overall central heating and air system. Without the ductwork, the air simply would not be able to get from your unit to your vents and registers. This is why it is important to take the time to inspect your ductwork.
Why Inspection Is Important
Ductwork is just like the unit itself. It will accumulate dirt and debris over time, seals will loosen, and tape will fall off. It is possible that some ducts might even become damaged by animals or other rodents. Whatever the situation is, all of this is going to lead to a loss of efficiency and unpleasant conditions.
When To Inspect Your Ducts
So, how do you know when your ducts need to be inspected. Well, it really doesn’t hurt to inspect them every year, but there are certain conditions that you can keep an eye out for. If you notice rattling and clamoring when the system comes on there is a good chance that this could be a sign of loose ducts. is it worth it?
If you experience uneven airflow from the register, you might be dealing with an air leak or fallen ducts. Uneven temperatures from the vents could mean that some of the insulation has fallen off the ducts. If you notice large amounts of dust and debris begin discharged from the vents when the system comes on, you probably need to inspect the ducts.
When unpleasant and musty odors grow more apparent in the home, you will need to inspect the ducts. And, if you notice a huge increase in your electric bills there is a good chance that you are dealing with leaks, fallen insulation, or an overly dirty duct system.

Just through normal occupation in the home, you can generate a great deal of contaminants and air pollutants. These can be anything from dander to dust, cooking odors, and chemicals. These such contaminants are pulled into the HVAC system and circulated throughout the home every time the HVAC comes on. Over time, the re-circulation of these contaminants are going to cause them to build up in the ductwork.

Improves The Efficiency Of The Unit
When your duct system collects dust and dirt over the years it will cause the system to become inefficient. All systems are going to build up dust and debris it doesn’t matter how clean you keep the home. When such dust and debris accumulate in the system it means that the system has to work harder to force the air through the ducts.
This not on increases the wear and tear of the system, but it is going to raise your utility bills. Duct cleanings can kill both of these birds with one stone.

Ductwork and registers that have a heavy build-up of dust and other debris can restrict air flow. This basically means that your system will have to work harder to produce the proper amount of airflow to lower or raise the temperature in the home.
The system will work harder and run longer, which will hasten the wear and tear on the system as well as raise your energy bills. A duct cleaning will remove such dirt and debris, therefore, increasing the overall efficiency of the system. find more on how to Inspect Your Air Ducts here
Remove Unpleasant Smells And Odors
There are a lot of stale smells in the home. Just think about all the cooking that you do, the cleaning agents that you spray, the pet’s dander circulating through the air, and there might even be tobacco smoke in the home.
When such odors and chemicals are exposed to air in the home they are going to be sucked into the ductwork. And, every time the system comes on it is just going to circulate these odors and chemicals throughout the home again over and over. Duct cleanings can remove such odors and improve the overall quality of life in the home. Read More Here

About The Duct Cleaners Association NADCA
If you have been reading up on duct cleanings and indoor air quality there is a good chance that you have been seeing the name NADCA quite frequently. This is simply nothing more than the National Air Duct Cleaning Association. This is an organization that was formed in 1989.
They were formed as a nonprofit organization as an association of companies that are engaged in duct cleanings. The organization was pretty much developed to establish guidelines from companies that perform duct cleanings. Of course, this doesn’t mean that every duct cleaning company out there is registered with the NADCA, but the ones that are can be trusted.
The NADCA’s Mission Statement
When the organization was first created they simply wanted to define and lay out the standards for any company that performed duct cleanings. Well, since this time they have expanded and grown and so has their mission statement.
They now want to lay out guidelines and standards for companies that inspect, clean, and restore HVAC systems. The organization not only lays out guidelines, but they educate, certify, and even promote companies that are registered with them. The number one goal of the association is to be the number one resource for consumers and other entities that are seeking air duct cleaning and HVAC inspection or restoration.

How To Insulate Ductwork
Most homeowners just don’t realize how important the insulation on the ductwork is. This insulation serves the same purpose at the insulation in your attic or crawlspace. It prevents cool and warm air from escaping the ducts and it also prevents sweating or condensation during the summer months.
If your ductwork is looking rather rough and you are looking to give it an upgrade this is something that you can do on your own. Not only will it improve the overall energy efficiency rating of the system, but it will help lower your utility bills.
Gathering Your Materials
Before you set out on the task of insulating your ductwork there are going to be some items that you will need. First, you are going to need goggles to protect your eyes, you will also need some kind of protective clothing like overhauls, and you will need an approved dust mask. In addition to this, you will need R-6 rated insulation along with foil tape. All of the items are things that can be acquired at your local hardware store.
Insulating The Ductwork
Now that you have gathered your supplies, you are ready to start insulating the ductwork. The process is pretty simple. In fact, the whole process is not unlike wrapping a Christmas present. Just make sure that the surface of the existing duct is free of dust, otherwise, you might have a hard time getting the tape to stick. Also, keep in mind that you can simply just place the new insulation over the old insulation. find more
There really is no sense in tearing the old insulation off unless it is just already falling off. It is best to cut the insulation to the width and length of the duct, tape one side, pull tight, and tape the other side. Once you have done this down the length of the duct, you can use the foil tape to completely seal the seam. hop over to this

How Do You Unclog a Dryer Vent By Yourself?
Owning a home really is a wonderful thing. It is the kind of experience that can offer a feeling of security and value. Of course, this doesn’t mean that owning a home is going to be easy. Not only is it going to be hard to make those mortgage payments, but there are going to be maintenance tasks that you will need to keep up with on a regular schedule.
Taking care of such tasks with your own hands can save your money. Sure, there are professional companies that can clean your gutters and dryer vents, but why hire companies when you can tackle the tasks yourself? Cleaning your dryer ducts is something that you will need to do often and will the following tips, you can make the overall process easier.
Choose The Right Dryer Vent Kit
The first thing that you need to know is that there are a number of dryer vent cleaning kits available. These kits are available in a number of styles, lengths, and prices. They can be purchased at your local hardware store and are pretty affordable. The good thing about these kits is that they can be used over again and again.
Most dryer vents are right around 4 inches in diameter so you don’t have to worry about getting the size wrong. However, the important part will come down to length. Make sure that you choose one that offers the length that you need.
Start With The Lint Trap
When you are cleaning the dryer vent the very first place you will want to tackle is the lint trap. This will either be located inside the dryer or on top of the dyer. Clean the lint trap and then vacuum around the lint trap with a vacuum cleaner. It isn’t even a day idea to stuff your newly purchased lint brush into the lint trap as far as possible. This might take some maneuvering, but will be worth the extra effort.

Tackling The Dryer
Once you have got the trap, you will be ready to move onto the vent itself. Remove the dryer and detach the vent. Now, shove the big lint brush down the vent as far as possible while twisting it. You will want to pull the brush out ever so often to remove the lint from it.
Tackle The Outside Exhaust
Once you have tackled the entirety of the vent do not forget to clean the exhaust as well. This is extremely important as you have probably pushed a bunch of the lint to this point. You might have to remove a screen before being able to access the entirety of the lint.
