The scene between Hiccup and Snotlout on the ship in book eleven is one of the best depictions of a person self destructing— and explicitly vocalizing the thought process behind it— that I have ever seen in media. PERIOD. And the fact it comes from a children’s book? And the character is shown getting out of that self destruction through the support of a loved one they had been denying they had? And is followed by reconciliation and a newfound purpose?

Of course it makes what follows absolutely gut wrenching and brutal— like, genuinely difficult to listen to (if you’re like me and read via the audiobooks). But I’ll de damned if Cressida Cowell isn’t a gift to this world for what she puts into it through her stories.

Just relistened to all of the HTTYD audiobooks, and if I had to sum up the thesis of this story, and Hiccup’s character, in one quick observation it would be this:

Hiccup’s opening narration does not end in “this is the story of how I became a king”. It ends in “this is the story of becoming a hero… the hard way.” And that just speaks volumes— about the character of Hiccup himself, about the incredible life lessons Cressida Cowell presents in these books, and to how gosh darn good the adaption is in that it captured that essence and just… bottled it for a movie format.

Remember that one episode where the twins send Snotlout on a wild goose chase obtaining a laundry list of items just to get into their exclusive shelter before the Flightmare comes?

I think about that sometimes. Don’t let people use you when no matter how much you do it’s never enough. Also if I recall correctly at one point they ask for a sturgeon dressed like Stoick, their chief. Don’t remember if Snotlout somehow finds that one but either way, that is hilarious but also kind of concerning.

My favorite part of HTTYD is when Hiccup narrates how on Berk it snows nine months of the year and hails the other three, meanwhile on screen it is a beautiful sunny day.

Hiccup Haddock you are the level of melodramatic I aspire to be.
