ATTENTION FOR ARTISTS !!! DID THIS HAPPEN TO YOU?

⚠️ I need to talk about the art scam I encountered here on Tumblr⚠️.

On the bottom I explained how I recognize them.

So as you people know I am a small artist here and I didn't think much about my art when a profile got in my comments asking me to dm it for commission.

I did it and they wanted a portrait and said they will pay a large sum of money "(300$ to be exact) . I said yes of course but it was suspicious that it only asked for the payment and for my PayPal address without even saying anything about the artwork and money payment. I of course didn't want to give anything until they explained details about the artwork and then only said medium canvas all in my style (Which was weird because before they said they wanted it in realistic style). I decided to send my Paypal because why not and they did send the money but my account wasn't a business account and I needed more money which they sent and asked me to pay them back later. I became suspicious and said that I don't have that money and that I won't pay them back, (I didn't receive money and PayPal "took it" plus I was even more suspicious that someone just sent that money like that). They claimed they couldn't get a refund and that they were worried but at that moment I realized that they were lying because they sent me a screenshot of the payment which you couldn't get in the app because Paypal doesn't allow screenshots and the website is different. They also sent a link to the store for some gaming cards to buy and sent the receipt to Paypal to claim my money which was also weird because why would I do that. I messaged them that they can get a refund and if they don't do that app will do that automatically. They didn't respond and I decided to wait a few days to see what will happen and now I saw that chat, comment and account got deleted which confirmed it was a scam.

These profiles are looking like an ordinary Tumblr profile that has only Tumblr pictures as profile. picture and basically Tumblr gallery profile pictures (like pyramid, cube circle) and just a few posts with basic hashtags so they look like someone that just logged on the app. They also have common Tumblr names like "crissalinepanda" that try to be quirky but sound generic which also doesn't make sense.

So in conclusion if someone messages you a comment for commissions be careful and if they are just asking for Paypal info and not discuss artwork or anything that's a red flag. If they immediately say that they have a huge budget and immediately want to send money that's also a red flag. If they say to choose "family and friends" don't because that option makes refund impossible. If they already sent you money don't worry because Paypal has a policy if money was unclaimed they won't charge you and they will refund the person.

I just wanted to see how far this will go and I didn't lose any money but I wanted to share the experience with other people so they don't fall for it. By my conclusion they target small artists that are inexperienced and who doesn't know how Paypal works so stay safe my dear.
