         “  that’s  what  my  other  bike  is  for  ,  ”  she  comments  offhandedly  as  if  this  is  a  topic  she’s  spoken  in  length  about  .  but  the  reality  is  ,  lari  hardly  talks  about  herself  .  not  enough  where  the  prowlers  know  every  facet  about  her  life  .  “  track  racing  only  though  .  it’s  too  fucking  dangerous  to  race  those  in  the  street  .  ”  she  finally  looks  up  to  meet  plum’s  gaze  .  “  glad  you  think  so  .  ”  lips  tug  up  into  a  small  smirk  .  “  why  the  sudden  interest  in  my  bike  anyway  ?  you  thinkin’  of  adding  motorcycles  to  the  list  of  things  you’ll  pose  with  ?  ”

"    have    you    ever    thought    of    racing    that    thing?    "      she    points    a    long,    intricately    designed    acrylic    nail    at    the    sleek    motorcycle    maestro    rode    in    on while the other lazily spiraled around her hair.      it was something    that    giselle    noted    the    mechanic    appeared    with    more    often    than    any    four    wheeled    vehicle    like    the    rest    of    them, and god was she nosy.      she    observes    them with    a    squint,    a    look    that    comes    across    far    different    than    her    next    words    convey—     call    it    a    symptom    of    resting    bitch    face.      "    looks    hot.    "

          “  is  that  any  way  to  talk  to  someone  who  wants  to  help  you  solve  your  problem  ?  ”  lari  asks  in  an  almost  bored  tone  .  they  hate  that  the  prowlers  are  on  a  losing  streak  .  it  damn  sure  isn’t  any  of  the  mechanics’  faults  they  can  tell  you  that  much  .  and  yet  ,  part  of  them  feels  like  there’s  an  unspoken  blame  to  be  placed  on  the  mechanics  purely  because  the  racers  aren’t  winning  races  .  and  it’s  not  a  pride  thing  for  lari  .  okay  well  ,  it  kind  of  is  .  a  fucking  degree  in  mechanical  engineering  and  they’re  here  as  a  mechanic  for  a  street  racing  crew  ?  they’re  here  to  do  their  best  regardless  .  but  that’s  besides  the  point  .  the  point  is  ,  each  race  the  prowlers  lose  is  money  walking  out  the  window  .  and  they’ll  be  damned  if  they  let  that  happen  .  besides  ,  jet’s  current  extended  losing  streak  ?  it  compels  them  like  an  unsolvable  puzzle  .

open   to   anyone,   set   at   track   -   one   after   monday’s   race   …

if   there’s   any   feeling   jet   wears   on   his   face   openly   and   without   shame,   it   is   anger.   often   directed   at   himself   –   a   thirteenth   place   finish   from   a   second   place   start   is   reason   enough   to   express   without   guilt,   he   thinks.   his   car   door   slams   behind   him   as   he   finally   gets   out   from   the   driver’s   seat,   minutes   after   the   race   had   been   called.   as   he   walks   away   from   the   track,   no   destination   in   mind,   the   desperation   makes   his   hands   shake   and   his   skin   crawl.   he   needs   an   answer   for   why   this   is   happening   –   what   he   is   doing   wrong.   his   mind   replays   the   race   already;   every   turn,   straightaway,   and   overtake   burned   into   his   memory   to   be   reviewed   over   and   over   again   ad   nauseum.   he   has   to   get   it   right.   the   sound   of   footsteps   behind   him   isn’t   enough   to   make   him   stop   or   turn,   instead   over   his   shoulder   goes   a   clear:   “   fuck   off.   ”

         the  feeling  is  indescribable  .  as  it  always  is  whenever  she  secures  herself  a  victory  .  it’s  electrifying  ,  all  encompassing  .  even  something  as  small  as  crossing  the  finish  line  of  a  practice  race  at  track-one  ,  a  victory  is  a  victory  .  she  steps  out  of  her  car  and  shuts  the  door  ,  a  gleeful  grin  encompassing  her  features  .  and  the  sight  of  a  prowler  does  little  to  dampen  it  .  however  ,  it  does  help  that  it’s  phantom  .  a  racer  that  came  up  with  her  in  the  scene  but  ultimately  joined  a  rival  crew  .  they  probably  should  be  a  little  more  …  hostile  given  tensions  .  but  juno  wouldn’t  go  as  far  as  to  call  phantom  an  enemy  .  a  rival  ?  absolutely  .  but  not  quite  an  enemy  .  “  how  about  executing  that  drift  perfectly  ?  ”  she’ll  jest  ,  strolling  over  to  them  .  “  i’m  always  here  .  at  this  point  ,  i  could  spend  the  night  here  and  the  owners  won’t  even  bat  an  eye  .  what  about  you  ?  burning  rubber  or  just  here  to  watch  ?  ”

setting  .  as  the  sun  is  setting  around  track  -  one  ;  tania  stands  just  outside  of  the  finish  line.

nothing  happens  here  until  the  world  goes  dark  and  the  lights  turn  bright,  except  when  it  does.  the  sky  is  still  a  bright  orange  when  viper  crosses  over  the  finish  line,  and  tania  leans  in.  close  enough  to  touch  —  or  for  some  passing  car  zooming  past  to  nick  the  ends  of  their  hair.  there's  a  rare  smirk  tugging  on  their  lips.  with  the  night  still  this  young,  viper  is  yet  to  be  an  enemy.  they  saunter  over.  "anything  i  should  be  congratulating  you  for  yet?"  tania  starts,  hands  shoved  into  their  jacket  pockets.  "was  wondering  if  i  was  gonna  see  you  on  track  tonight."

         “  oh  get  over  it  ,  ”  she  sticks  her  tongue  out  at  him  .  “  i’ll  literally  buy  us  the  next  round  of  fries  .  would  that  make  you  feel  better  ?  i’ll  even  throw  in  another  round  of  drinks  .  happy  ?  ”

         after  speaking  to  the  photographer  about  some  of  the  best  angles  to  capture  her  car  ,  juno  saunters  over  to  the  model  and  stops  right  next  to  her  .  curious  eyes  peer  over  horizon’s  shoulder  to  see  the  selection  of  cars  in  question  .  “  well  that  depends  …  ”  she  starts  ,  lips  twisting  up  in  thought  .  “  according  to  the  market  ,  it  is  a  good  year  for  cars  .  but  again  ,  it  depends  .  what  kind  of  car  are  you  looking  for  ?  euro  ?  japanese  ?  domestic  ?  ”

         she’s  not  even  sure  why  she  continues  to  show  up  to  these  meets  .  but  lari  supposes  that  it  has  to  do  with  her  innate  fascination  with  the  cars  that  just  can’t  keep  her  away  .  she  spots  tania  not  too  far  off  and  makes  her  way  over  to  them  .  “  nice  ride  ,  ”  she  comments  ,  a  playful  smile  gracing  the  mechanic’s  lips  .  “  is  it  me  or  is  today  the  day  that  everyone  decided  to  get  into  a  fight  ?  ”  guess  those  hands  are  rated  e  for  everyone  .

         despite  working  with  the  nariza  mechanics  ,  juno  likes  taking  a  hands  on  approach  with  her  car  .  it’s  the  years  spent  working  at  her  uncle’s  shop  that  really  forced  her  to  learn  and  get  to  where  she  is  now  .  “  so  this  is  my  daily  and  not  what  i  race  with  ,  ”  she  starts  ,  hand  patting  the  roof  of  her  white  honda  nsx  .  “  it’s  nothing  too  crazy  .  marga  hills  aero  kit  .  ”  she’ll  point  to  the  changes  on  her  front  bumper  ,  side  skirts  ,  front  and  rear  fenders  .  “  added  a  carbon  wing  ––  slightly  modified  .  swapped  out  the  rear  lights  ,  ”  she’ll  point  to  the  heart  taillights  .  “  upgraded  the  chassis  so  it’s  more  stable  .  i  got  some  help  there  with  the  coilovers  .  and  the  piece  de  resistance  ,  ”  she  pauses  to  pop  the  hood  of  her  car  .  “  three  liter  engine  with  vtec  .  truly  a  thing  of  beauty  .  mostly  stock  .  but  a  couple  changes  were  made  to  give  it  a  bit  of  oomf  .  i  won’t  go  into  too  much  detail  but  let’s  just  say  the  changes  were  so  worth  it  because  the  car  sounds  so  sexy  and  satisfying  .  ”  she  can  yap  about  this  all  day  .  and  truthfully  ,  if  it  weren’t  for  the  fact  that  she  LOVES  driving  ,  she  really  could’ve  become  a  mechanic  !  “  and  of  course  ,  it  wouldn’t  have  the  viper  touch  without  it’s  signature  hot  pink  underglow  .  ”

“again.”  jaeha  doesn’t  make  a  habit  of  making  demands,  —  not  here,  at  least  —  but  if  there’s  anyone  who  can  handle  it,  it’s  juno.  hence  the  one-word  request,  said  from  his  perch;  leaned  up  against  the  trunk  of  juno’s  car.  there’s  something  about  this  one  —  the  ride  as  much  as  its  owner.  “lay  it  out  for  me  again,  how  you  fixed  this  one  up.  which  one  of  her  is  from  the  original  model,  and  which  is  the  viper  touch?”

         “  i  mean  ,  you  voluntarily  drove  into  a  wall  .  can’t  really  blame  her  there  !  ”  lari  shakes  their  head  .  bowie  is  certainly  …  something  .  for  lack  of  a  better  word  .  “  oh  i  can  drive  .  i  just  don’t  like  driving  .  personal  preference  .  ”  and  it  gives  them  an  excuse  to  not  have  to  drive  anyone  .  they  prefer  their  solitude  !  and  riding  their  motorcycle  everywhere  gives  them  that  .  they  give  the  wrench  one  last  crank  before  nodding  in  approval  to  themselves  .  “  why  do  you  wanna  drive  anyway  ?  it’s  not  all  that  cut  out  to  be  .  all  that  traffic  .  then  there’s  the  whole  parking  situation  .  ”
