Journal Entry 14 | Meeting Client Brief
Key Criteria
Responds to the Site & Client Brief Questions to consider: My creative concept responds to and activate the site by creating an immersive experience that celebrates the Indigenous, industrial and nautical heritage of Northshore. The concept addressed EDQ’s place product vision - waterfront development as it is located on the Brisbane River which will activate the wharf. It connected local businesses such as Eat Street with Maritime Green and has the potential to become one of the field trip destinations for educational purposes. One of EDQ’s objectives is to increase visit rates on weekdays and weekends during daylight hours. As the concept will provide different experiences between daylight hours and nighttime, it will likely attract return visitors. It also reflects EDQ’s branding positioning statements of immersive riverfront experience. The concept enables engagement, learning and interactions between sites. It addressed the competitive pillars of industrious character. The concept is an innovative, immersive and sustainable infrastructure that connects with historical Northshore heritage to provide the diverse communities with space for leisure and learning. I believe the concept met the criteria defined as successful creative placemaking by Borrup (2018). It is grounded in place, employs authentic and ongoing community engagement, embraces the existing community development system and taking the project in an outward orientation.
Originality Questions to consider: My concept engage and draw attention to Northshore’s distinctive features mainly geographic (waterfront) and historical (indigenous, industrial and nautical heritage). It also provides a learning opportunity for the visitors. The existing creative projects in Northshore mostly ‘renovate’ the surrounded areas by adding artifacts and improving their current practical use. However, it does not directly bring visitors from place to place. For my concept, it encourages interactions between sites such as Eat Street to Maritime Green. From previous posts (journal entries 11-13), my project has shown originality by comparing it with other large and small-scaled bridge designs from overseas and Brisbane. The EDQ does not necessarily need me to produce the concept idea, however, it will involve collaboration with the Indigenous artist and songwriter.
Audience Engagement, Ethics and Diversity Questions to consider:  The demographic at Northshore is the local and international ‘Creative Leaders’ who are “outgoing, social, forward-thinking individuals and organisations who place genuine value on exploring, creating and sharing new experiences that enrich life.” Below are the key stakeholders for this project.
Tumblr media
The main target audience for this concept is Destination Visitors. My project can actively engage, sustain, and grow this audience because the concept can potentially serve itself as a destination and as a learning site. It can satisfy their needs of looking for new places to visit, being able to create contents that are social-media worthy and opportunities to connect and have unique experiences. As the project involves collaborating with the local Indigenous artists, it can communicate effectively and ethically with the local Indigenous and culturally diverse communities. If EDQ wishes to expand on more diverse Indigenous cultures, certain procedures, protocols and consultation must be followed to avoid disrespect and violation of culture. Visitors will want to (re-)visit Northshore to engage with my project as it is immersive through sight (view the beautiful river and timber sculptures), sound (music) and touch (engage with the river and wharf through AR - research suggest it will encourage repeated actions). Also, the AR information can be updated depending on the occasion.
Feasibility, Sustainability & Enduring Significance Questions to consider: The concept will likely fall within the client’s budget and time frame as the project is resourceful and will reuse the shipping containers and timbers available in Northshore. There is no waiting time for imports of materials and the budget will be mainly used on labour, maintenance and constructions etc. However, getting permission for creating Indigenous art and music will likely take time as we must pay respect to Indigenous communtities and their culture (Nursey-Bray, 2019). The current estimated expense is $25,730 which is well under the budget and has space to cover more detailed expenses. As the project is small-scaled, it can be refreshed, adapted and expanded to other areas of Northshore and future site activation. The bridge is designed with reused materials therefore it is sustainable. The project will collaborate with engineers to conduct design adjustments and testing to ensure the bridge can withstand the test of time.

Journal Entry 13 | Originality Comparison 3
Conceptual bridge design linking Kangaroo Point to the Brisbane CBD is a new plan developed by the Brisbane City Council.
The purpose of the design is to create an iconic, green and innovative bridge and connect river cities to drive tourism. Compared to existing bridge design in Brisbane, the new bridge will not only be aesthetically pleasing, practical and serve as a new destination site.
During the research, it was difficult to find any small-scaled, innovative and immersive bridge. Therefore, the project idea can potentially be the first small immersive crossing bridge in Brisbane.

The Hoorn bridge designed by Luc Deleu was a temporary walk-able sculpture built in 1990 in the harbor city of Hoorn in the Netherlands.
This bridge was design mainly for practical reason - a crossing point between two sides of the river. It does not provide much immersive experience compared to the project idea.

Journal Entry 8 | Digital Footprint
AR is used here for educational purposes. It is incorporated into the design to inform the viewers about the Indigenous, industrial and nautical heritage.
The 4 QR codes placed on the timber sculptures is a way to measure digital footprint other than social media (ie. view counts, survey, click rate of links to website etc.). Once the codes are scanned, it will direct the viewers to point their device at a certain area and showcased the history through animated AR videos. Each code will reflect different aspects of history. For example, when facing the Brisbane River, the videos will show how Aborigines make canoes and rafts to travel along the rivers (idea 2 concept); timelapse of how the wharf was developed over time; the use of wharf (legacy industrial maritime use); and yachting and regatta for entertainment purposes in 1865.
Tumblr media
It is noted that safety must be carefully considered for this project as accidents are likely to happen. People can get carried away easily with AR and as the project is located on the river, we should minimise the movement involved with the videos.
To increase return visitors, we can update the videos to fit different occasions. For example, important events/days that are celebrated by Aborigines and how did they celebrate.
AR has proven to create higher satisfaction, enjoyment and repeated engagement. In our project, this means it will create an immersive experience for the visitors, and also likely to receive positive feedback and increase return visitors. However, there is still a lack of empirical research in the area of using it for education. Yet, the results so far were very encouraging. Further researches are required to see how the AR can be developed to make Northshore potentially be a must-visit site for educational purposes (ie. field trips for schools).

Journal Entry 3 | Brainstorming Idea 2
Idea 2 is formed around celebrating the Indigenous heritage using timber as the main material.
Inspirations
Canoes and rafts were the main transport methods for travelling along the river.
Canoes were made with tied bark. Different types of trees were used to make the canoes, such as:
Swamp Mahogany (the common one)
Stringy Bark
Iron Bark
Few types of rafts were made by the Aborigines:
Rafts made with the dead, dry sticks bound together with bark strings and covered with sheets of tea-tree bark.
The raft was a small log used as a swimming aid.
Flat bark sheet with four separately tied up corners.

Journal Entry 2 | Brainstorming Idea 1
Idea 1 is formed around celebrating the Indigenous heritage using timber as the main material.
Inspirations
Similar to the EDQ's goals to activate Northshore, the Quandamooka Project is initiated from 1953 to 2003 to activate Moreton Bay and its islands and increase the visitors' rate. The project helps the viewers to build a greater understanding of the indigenous heritage by telling a story using sculptures and artworks.
One of the sculptures 'Bulka Booangun: Calling the Dolphins', commemorate the original timber jetty built in 1882. It tells a story of the traditional fishing practice practised by the local indigenous peoples from past generations. It is a 5-metre high soaring timber sculpture made with 3 recycled hardwood pylons and placed at the entrance to the jetty at Wynnum Queensland. The design concept was presented through carved and charred texts and ripple-like forms on the timbers.

Idea 1 - Immersive timber sculptures pathway
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Built on Maritime Green
The timber sculptures will be placed along the immersive pathway. (Each sculpture will have different meanings).
Solar panels will be the main source to generate energy for the LED light that will light up the sculptures at night
QR codes will be placed on the sculptures for viewers to scan from their phones. An AR or video will pop up to show further information about the indigenous heritage relevant to the sculptures. This could be a source to measure digital footprint.
Music speakers will be installed under the timber to play songs which will be another immersive feature. We could play songs by Maroochy Barambah who is a performance artist and songwriter from the Turrbal Tribe.

Indigenous art will be painted on timbers. As there are strict rules around Indigenous art in regards to the use of symbols and painting style, certain protocols must be followed. We could collaborate with Kulkarawa Meeanjinu, an indigenous artist from the Daki Yakka clan (a subgroup of the Turrbal Tribe). Her artworks focused around the Brisbane River, Maroochy River, surrounding coastal seas and the native fauna which is highly relevant to Northshore.

Analysis of brand identities of Northshore and surrounding suburbs
The current identities of Northshore seem like a combination of New Farm Park with big outdoor spaces; South Bank celebrating culture and entertainment with creative design and events; Fortitude Valley with its offbeat vibes; and West End with delicious food, music and markets. However, this does not provide an effective competitive advantage for Northshore.

Magic Question Matrix
The Magic Sauce. (2019). Magic Question Matrix. The Magic Sauce. https://www.themagicsauce.com
Context:
Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) is looking for a creative placemaking project to activate the waterfront ‘Maritime Green’ for a diverse audience.
 The challenges include:
Increase residents in the area but the site is not highly activated during daylight hours (between Monday-Thursday and/or Friday to Sunday during the day)
Limited car park spaces where only 20 spaces available for the new activation
Limited public transport (Bus and CityCat).
Why now?
As the residential area is growing, the current site is not being used effectively to attract visitors. Increase visitors to the area would be beneficial to the Northshore communities as it can boost local business sales. Moreover, it can also act as an educational site to provide information on the history and heritage of Northshore.
The consequences of not taking action:
Northshore will not be able to receive the attention it deserves and may be subject to illegal graffiti.
Pic of Success
The goal of the new project will successfully increase visitations to the area and understand the history and heritage of Northshore. It could potentially be one of the main field trips sites for schools to attend to learn about history, heritage and art. In the public eyes, Northshore will be viewed as the must-visit site for an original, creative, immersive and innovative design. This will also contribute to improving the brand awareness of Northshore.
Success can be measured with:
Increase in visitors rates
Positive reviews online and also public’s opinions of the place (word of mouth)
Photo sharing of the place on social media measures engagement which will lead to more foot traffic and increase brand awareness
Constraints
Ideas must be strictly original
A presentable physical and digital prototype
Environmentally and economically sustainable
Ability to create a digital footprint for the project other than social media
Respond directly to at least one of the Northshore pillars
Must emphasise the distinctiveness of the site, its Indigenous and/or industrial port heritage; and its relationship to the Brisbane River and surrounding areas
Ability to be adapted, refreshed, built on and/or expand in future years
Budget is $AUD 40,000 - $70,000.
The project must have enduring significance for at least 10 years and be deliverable in the next 1-3 years.
We have shipping containers, timbers and large areas to work with.
People
During the development of the project, we must take in any complaints or feedback received from the stakeholders and make improvements. It is also important we respect the Indigenous people and culture.
